GEORGE HARRISON MBE – It is with great sadness that I advise you of the death of GEORGE last Sunday. NADEEM SHAIKH had spoken to GEORGE last week, and said he was struggling with a cough and chest infection. Our sincere thoughts and condolences are with GEORGE’S wife SHEILA and his family at this sad time.
GEORGE was 90 on 11 December last year, and at the SBH Special Awards Dinner the following Saturday, there was a special silver salver presented to GEORGE, with the accolade led by NADEEM SHAIKH and STEPHANIE PAPARIZOS. It recognised his coaching achievements and the contribution to the development of many SBH athletes. The award was collected, on his behalf, by Olympic bronze medallist, MARILYN OKORO. The presentation also included a commemorative book of photographs featuring GEORGE and many of his athletes. The highlight was a video presentation from LIZZIE BIRD on the big screen, being a former GEORGE HARRISON athlete now studying and training in the USA. LIZZIE is the UK number one 3000m steeplechaser and British record holder. 90 years young and coaching for over 50 years. GEORGE has helped, supported, trained, mentored and inspired so many athletes and coaches along the way. He has trained over 100 athletes to National and International success.
GEORGE served as President of Shaftesbury from 2011 to 2014, and supported numerous events and meetings throughout his term. He handed over the Presidency at the 2014 AGM to DAVE BEDFORD. The following day, 26 November, GEORGE told me he was visiting Buckingham Palace, in which he received his MBE from PRINCE WILLIAM. GEORGE was wearing his ‘Muckle Flugga’ tie (which is a small rocky island north of Unst in the Shetland Islands) which has an athlete on it. PRINCE WILLIAM knew of this and commented on it, GEORGE then explained the history.
I am sure many of you have your own memories and/or photographs of GEORGE, therefore if you send them to me I will put together a SBH memorial document, and will publish it in a few weeks’ time.

SEB COE DOES NOT RULE OUT IOC PRESIDENCY BID – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
Could SEB COE become the first British president of the International Olympic Committee? The 66-year-old double Olympic champion certainly did not rule out the idea during an interview with The Times recently.
“I’m not ruling it in and I’m certainly not ruling it out,” he told the newspaper. Current president THOMAS BACH has a couple of years left in his term and an election is due in 2025. COE is already an IOC member and wants to stand for re-election as president of World Athletics later this year after having taken over the role from LAMINE DIACK in 2015. “I genuinely feel that the job I’m doing now represents the ultimate for me,” he said. “You join an athletics club at 11 and one day have the opportunity to grab leadership of the sport and shape it. This has never been a stepping stone to something else. “Anybody who takes that role [IOC presidency] in 2025 needs to be asking some important questions,” COE added. “Does sport really, genuinely, understand the challenge before it — its relevance, its salience, navigating the most complicated political landscape while holding on to its moral compass?”
Since the creation of the IOC in 1894 there have only been nine presidents. They are:
1894: Demetrius Vikelas
1896: Pierre de Coubertin
1925: Henri de Baillet-Latour
1946: J.Sigfrid Edstrom
1952: Avery Brundage
1972: Lord Killanin
1980: Juan Antonio Samaranch
2001: Jacques Rogge
2013: Thomas Bach
WORLD ATHLETICS PLANS RESTRICTIONS BUT NO OUTRIGHT BAN ON TRANSGENDER ATHLETES – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
World Athletics is consulting its member federations with a preferred option to tighten rules around transgender athletes but not ban them entirely from competing in the female category. The proposals would see the maximum plasma testosterone level allowed in transgender women athletes and those with differences in sex development (DSD) reduced to half from 5 nanomoles per litre to 2.5 nmol/L. In addition, the athletes would have to stay below the permitted level for two years rather than one year. World Athletics said that putting forward a preferred option was “the best way to gather constructive feedback, but this does not mean this is the option that will be presented to council or indeed adopted” and they plan to consult more widely in the coming weeks. “In terms of our female eligibility regulations, we will follow the science and the decade and more of the research we have in this area in order to protect the female category, maintain fairness in our competitions and remain as inclusive as possible,” the governing body added.
Few female athletes have spoken out, presumably due to fear of being lambasted on social media, but British shot putter AMELIA STRICKLER told the Telegraph: “I mean, the women’s shot is half the weight (of the men’s). Apart from all the strength they’ve gained over the years, there is the height advantage, the wingspan, all the things hormones can’t replace… hip angles, lung capacity etc. Training would be easier for them. That’s just a fact. “I am genuinely worried. This is my career. If it comes into effect in March, then by March 2025 that could be me retiring,” said STRICKLER. “The fact that World Athletics, one of the biggest, has not [put] its foot down, I think it is really, really upsetting. I think these rules really could open the floodgates,” she added. “If I get social media backlash I don’t really care. If no one says anything, we’re all screwed.”
The proposals are set to be voted on in March.

PHOTOGRAPH’S – From time to time we have photographs of our members taken at meetings or presentations which we would like to use both on the website or incorporated within our report to our local newspaper. Can you please let me know if you do NOT want your photograph to be published. Also, I would appreciate if you could send me any photographs, which I can then publish on the website and newsletter.
FACEBOOK – Photographs can be found on the SBH page.
CAN YOU HELP PLEASE– I would welcome any contributions From Yourselves, any impending marriages, or additions to the family, any running or competing incidents, also past warm weather training/holidays (No Club 24 please). Currently the response has been excellent, but if you have anything that could make it into next week’s Newsletter – please email me.
CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION – Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.
On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.
