HELP WANTED – PARENTS – We need your help to ensure your child can compete at all their events this season!
Volunteering to help on the track or field at just a couple of our home and away fixtures in 2025, will give us certainty early on that the meetings can go ahead. It’s a fun way to be involved on the day, you will still be free to watch your child’s events, lunches and refreshments are always provided at our home fixtures and at most away ones too.
Please contact either GERALD ALTERMAN or ROSALIND ZEFFERTT for further information or complete this form SBH 2025 Summer Availability.

RECENT NEW MEMBER – We wish you a very warm welcome, and a happy, healthy and successful time with Shaftesbury to ZACHARY BINDON-GOSS, DOV GOTKINE and XAVIER WILKINS
NEW CLUB RECORD – Congratulations to RENEE REGIS who broke the Women’s Under 23 200m record with a time of (22.83 w0.0) at the Reunion Internacional Ciudad De Guadalajara at Guadalajara, Spain on 18 June. The previous Club Record was (23.32 w1.4) by ALANNAH FASHANU set at Dagenham on 20 July 2022
NEW CLUB RECORD – Congratulations to EMILY NEWNHAM who broke her own Women’s Under 23 400m Hurdles record with a time of (54.49) at the Atletcageneve meeting at Geneva, Switzerland on 21 June. Her previous Club Record was (55.20) set at Brussels, Belgium on 25 May 2025.
NEW CLUB RECORD – Congratulations to STACEY GONZALEZ who broke her own Women’s V50 4kg Hammer record with a throw of (32.38m) at the Southern Athletics League Division 1 at Kingston on 22 June. Her previous Club Record was (31.95m) set at Lee Valley on 11 May 2025.
REQUEST FROM TEAM MANAGERS – We are asking that you reply to team managers when they contact you? It’s very difficult to select a team if the athletes don’t reply especially when we can see that they have read the text. Even if they are unavailable the team managers need to know!
SBH CLUB RECORDS – I have carried out a review of athletes performances on the PO10, Following this I have found the odd record that had not been picked up, also events that not included in the club record list (mainly U9/U11 and veteran athletes). Another reason is some results can be posted on the PO10 a week or so late, and it is almost impossible to no they have been included on the PO10.
To help in identifying a club record, I have produced a single document, for example ‘Men’s Club Track and Road Records Outdoors’ and all events from Under 9 up to Masters 70+ are shown on one page. Also probably fortnightly is to review the clubs section on the PO10, this identifies every performance for every age-group, based on all results published on the PO10.
These are those documents – A Club Outdoor Track And Road Records For All Men Age Groups Updated 14-06-25 B Club Outdoor Field Records For All Men Age Groups Updated 14-06-25 C Club Indoor Track Records For All Men Age Groups Updated 14-06-25 D Club Indoor Field Records For All Men Age-Groups Updated 14-06-25 E Club Outdoor Track And Road Records For All Women Age Groups Updated 14-06-25 F Club Outdoor Field Records For All Women Age Groups Updated 14-06-25 G Club Indoor Track And Field Records For All Women Age Groups Updated 14-06-25

RESULTS
Just to clarify, that the results I publish can be different to those that are shown on the Power of 10. The differences relate to seasons and personal best performances. For example in the recent EYAL results, an athlete in the 200m ran (24.1), and on his profile his season’s best was shown as (23.88) indoors. As the 200m indoors and outdoors are totally different type of events, I had shown the (24.1) as a season’s best. Regarding Master athletes any personal best performances relate to their current age-groups, as Club Records for Masters age-groups are in 5 year periods.

DISCUS GIANTS CLASH AT LONDON DIAMOND LEAGUE – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
Olympic champion, world record-holder, world champion and British record-holder go head to head on July 19. Olympic champion ROJE STONA of Jamaica, world champion DANIEL STAHL of Sweden, world record holder MYKOLAS ALEKNA of Lithuania, British record-holder LAWRENCE OKOYE, plus European champion KRISTJAN CEH of Slovenia will clash in one of the best discus fields ever assembled at the London Athletics Meet on Saturday July 19.
STONA was a surprise gold medallist in Paris. The 26-year-old – who finished sixth in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham – broke the Olympic record with a personal best throw of (70.00m) to take victory and in doing so, became the first Jamaican to earn the title of Olympic champion in a throwing event. STAHL, Olympic gold medallist in Tokyo 2021, finished seventh in Paris. He is a two-time world champion (2019 and 2023) and his national record of (71.86m) is the equal-seventh best of all time. He has finished runner-up in his two Diamond League outings this season to date, Doha (67.06m) and Stockholm (69.53m).
World record-holder and Olympic silver medallist ALEKNA owns three of the top five throws in history. His (75.56m) best came at the famous Oklahoma Throws Series World Invitational at Millican Field in Ramona on April 13, making him the first athlete to surpass 75m. The 22-year-old – who was World Championships silver medallist in 2022 and bronze medallist in 2023 – has yet to compete outside of the USA this year and most recently finished runner-up at the NCAA Championships (66.77m). OKOYE – alongside Scottish record holder Nick Percy (67.86m) – adds British interest. The three-time Olympian, Commonwealth Games silver medallist and European Championships bronze medallist in 2022, threw an impressive (70.76m) in Ramona in April, the first British athlete to exceed the 70m mark.
“The men’s discus is very competitive right now and I’m grateful to be part of that,” said the Croydon Harrier. “I had a great few months in Australia at the start of this year and that’s set me up well for this summer. My new PB and British record in Ramona was a long time coming. I love throwing, but I’m continually looking to progress and that performance really gave me belief in terms of what’s possible. “London is an important part of my preparation for this year’s World Championships in Tokyo. I’ve always said that being selected for a major champs doesn’t mean much on its own, it’s about what you do when you get there, so I need to build consistency and confidence to hit my targets. I’m looking forward to returning to the Olympic Stadium where I have the perfect opportunity to throw far and to be competitive with the backing of a home support.”
CEH, ranked sixth on the global all-time list with a best of (72.36m) (May 2025), won the 2022 world title and was the world silver medallist in 2023 before finishing fourth in the Olympics. Since finishing third in his Diamond League opener in Doha he’s unbeaten in 2025 to date, his most recent victories including the Diamond League meeting in Stockholm (69.73m) and at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku (70.61m). Undoubtedly the form athlete, his three best ever throws have come in the last month.
WHY NOVELTY EVENTS ARE CONTRIVED YET COMPELLING – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph taken by London Marathon Events.
While purists insist FAITH KIPYEGON’S breaking four attempt or ELIUD KIPCHOGE’S sub-two-hour marathon mean little, BEN BLOOM argues that such showcases are the perfect way for athletics to build attention. I’ve had a vision – quite a specific one – for a few years now and I think I need to speak to BARRY HEARN about it. For anyone unfamiliar, HEARN is the sports promoting maestro who guided snooker through its 1980s heyday (and beyond) and has recently turned darts into Britain’s biggest sporting party, generating an enormous £1 million prize fund for next year’s world champion. HEARN has made a career out of thinking outside of the box. Which brings me to my vision. It isn’t about athletics, but you’ll get the gist.
The headline acts: TOM DALEY, JACK LAUGHER, ANDREA SPENDOLINI-SIRIEUX and the rest of Britain’s current diving stars. The task: See how many somersaults and twists they can perform while flinging themselves off the iconic London landmark and into the River Thames.
Before anyone writes in to point out the numerous impracticalities of such an idea, I do not have the faintest clue about logistics. I’ll leave those matters to HEARN. But imagine it. The images would be spectacular, blasted across social and traditional media, and catapulting diving into the public realm like never before. What would it prove? Absolutely nothing. But it would showcase the superhuman abilities of sportsmen and women who struggle for airtime from one Olympic Games to the next. That, surely, has to be a positive thing.
Now, many devoted athletics followers are not fully onboard with MICHAEL JOHNSON’S Grand Slam Track – the new series that ignores the field element of the sport entirely, not to mention a whole host of track events. But JOHNSON, unashamedly, does not care because those people are not his target audience. He wants to extend the reach of athletics (or certain track parts of it) beyond those who already love it, and take it to the masses. It is a bold plan and the jury remains out on his ability to achieve it (this article was written before GST in LA was cancelled), but at its core is a simple, commendable, aspiration to get more people watching some semblance of the sport. Good on him.
It is for the same reason that I am such a big fan of FAITH KIPYEGON’S attempt to become the first woman to run a mile in less than four minutes. There will be many athletics purists out there who could not care less about the event, which will take place in Paris in late June, or perhaps even think it might denigrate the sport in some way. While we do not yet know the intricacies of the support she will be given to aid her cause, we do know it will render whatever time she runs unratifiable under World Athletics regulations. So be it. Tell that to the millions – if not billions – of people who will read about it or watch it if she achieves her enormously ambitious goal.
Speaking to GEOFF WIGHTMAN recently, he recalled interviewing ELIUD KIPCHOGE prior to this year’s London Marathon and asking the great Kenyan what one running memory he would keep if forced to whittle it down. The answer was not his Olympic titles, nor his various marathon triumphs or world records, but becoming the first human to run 26.2 miles in under two hours. There was a sizeable athletics following who could not stomach the manner in which KIPCHOGE broke that mark, given the contrived nature of the event. Indeed, the revered former AW photographer MARK SHEARMAN chose to attend the annual England Athletics Awards instead of travelling to Vienna. “Not a pacemaker in sight,” he quipped of the awards ceremony. “Well, maybe one or two with the more elderly of the attendees.”
Mark may well challenge my view of things, and I humbly defer to a man who has attended more athletics meetings than I ever will. But I will respectfully disagree with anyone who suggests that these manufactured events are not beneficial for athletics. Like almost every sport (football the notable outlier), athletics needs exposure. In this era of sports entertainment, it is no longer sufficient to stick with the status quo and hope everything will endure in perpetuity. Kipchoge’s KIPCHOGE’S sub two-hour marathon feat created headlines globally in a way that no traditional athletics competition – even the Olympics – ever could.
On a smaller scale, I was a keen supporter of the MONDO DUPLANTIS vs KARSTEN WARHOLM 100m showdown in Zurich last year. A man clocking (10.37) to beat another in (10.47) is incomparable even to national-standard sprinting, but the narrative around it was compelling and, crucially, it was great publicity for the sport.
In a desperate quest for more eyeballs, the seemingly alternative option – which increasing numbers of sports are choosing – is to open the doors to social media influencers with huge online followings. No thank you. If the choice is watching a sporting great try something a bit different or a YouTuber not fit to lace their spikes, then I know which one I would advocate athletics choosing. KIPCHOGE, KIPYEGON, DUPLANTIS and WARHOLM are wonderful freaks of nature. They deserve the world to know about them, and if it takes a superficial event to capture attention then that is fine by me. What else could we try? How about putting a springy take-off board down and seeing what distance
These ideas are semi-serious at best (although I remain adamant that the Tower Bridge diving one has legs!) and I know perfectly well there will be all manner of reasons why they cannot ever be realised, but the value of novel thinking in sport should never be underestimated. Unlike some of his predecessors, World Athletics president SEB COE has shown himself to be firmly on board with evolution. When asked in 2019 about KIPCHOGE’S sub two-hour marathon, he offered a pragmatic view. “I have encouraged organisations who want to promote our sport to be creative and sometimes think outside of the box,” he said. “If people are going to get excited and a few young people might decide that marathon running or road running is for them, or frankly just want to do something for their health and wellbeing through running, then I can be pretty catholic about it.” Contrast that with PRIMO NEBIOLO, who ran the governing body for almost the entirety of the 1980s and 1990s, and was wholly dismissive of the 1997 multi-million-dollar 150m showdown between Johnson and Donovan Bailey to decide the “world’s fastest man”. After a race that ultimately underwhelmed when Johnson pulled up injured, NEBIOLO said: “This is not sports as entertainment, but more like something out of a circus. And we’re not interested in it.”
Such an attitude would not cut it in the present day. Why would anyone who loves sport not support any event that showcases the brilliance of the superstars who do it better than anyone else on the planet? There is little point in preserving sport’s sanctity if no one is around to watch it. When KIPYEGON sets off in Paris there is every chance she will not succeed – remember, KIPCHOGE only broke the marathon’s two-hour mark at his second attempt under manufactured conditions. Cutting nearly eight seconds off her already extraordinary world record will be incredibly difficult regardless of additional, illegal, help. If she does manage it, expect the fanfare to be enormous. The mile transcends sport, and people who know nothing about athletics are familiar with the name ROGER BANNISTER more than 70 years after he became the first man to run a sub four-minute mile. “We’ll still be talking about KIPYEGON in 150 years’ time if she does this,” says WIGHTMAN. It is difficult to see how anyone can consider that a bad thing.

PHOTOGRAPH’S – From time to time we have photographs of our members taken at meetings or presentations which we would like to use both on the website or incorporated within our report to our local newspaper. Can you please let me know if you do NOT want your photograph to be published. Also, I would appreciate if you could send me any photographs, which I can then publish on the website and newsletter.
FACEBOOK – Photographs can be found on the SBH page.
CAN YOU HELP PLEASE – I would welcome any contributions From Yourselves, any impending marriages, or additions to the family, any running or competing incidents, also past warm weather training/holidays (No Club 24 please). Currently the response has been excellent, but if you have anything that could make it into next week’s Newsletter – please email me.
CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION – Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.
On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.
