ZHARNEL HUGHES SMASHES LINFORD CHRISTIE’S UK 100m RECORD  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

The 27-year-old is now the fastest British runner in history after taking down 30-year-old national mark in New York. ZHARNEL HUGHES has created history by breaking LINFORD CHRISTIE’S long-standing UK 100m of (9.87) with a blistering  (9.83 w1.3) at the USATF NYC Grand Prix on Saturday (June 24). Outside athletics, HUGHES is a qualified pilot and here in New York he flew down the track and then really took off in the final stages as he drew away from a world-class field. Racing in the same Icahn Stadium in Manhattan where USAIN BOLT set his first world 100m record of (9.72) a few weeks before the 2008 Beijing Olympics, HUGHES charged out of the blocks from lane six but found himself behind ACKEEM BLAKE of Jamaica, plus CHRISTIAN COLEMAN and BRANDON CARNES of the United States at 30m although he drew level with BLAKE and COLEMAN at 60m. At that point HUGHES sprouted wings and surged clear to win by a tenth of a second from BLAKE with COLEMAN, the 2019 world champion, fading to third in (10.02). HUGHES time initially flashed up as (9.84) but was quickly corrected to (9.83) as he continued running around the bend celebrating and pointing his finger to the air triumphantly before turning around to look at the clock. The joy of victory was then overtaken by a look of astonishment as he realised he’d improved his PB from (9.91) and set a British record to boot.

In a brilliant few days for British sprinting, HUGHES run came at the end of a week that saw EUGENE ARNO-DADZIE enjoy a breakthrough run of (9.93) in Austria, whereas 16-year-old TEDDY WILSON broke MARK LEWIS-FRANCIS’S long-standing UK under-17 record with (10.26) in Germany. “I’m not sure many people expected this, but patience is the word,” HUGHES said. “It’s amazing and something I’ve been working toward for a while.” After what he felt were some underpar results in recent seasons, he said: “I dug deep and I pulled myself out of a dark space. I relaxed more, put the work in, trusted myself and trusted my speed.” CHRISTIE’S British record was set in August 1993 – a couple of years before HUGHES was even born – when he won the world title in Stuttgart ahead of Americans ANDRE CARSON, DENNIS MITCHELL and CARL LEWIS. His( 9.87) was a European record at the time and, aged 33, it came one year after he won the Olympic 100m title in Barcelona.

HUGHES was born in Anguilla but has competed for Britain for a number of years and his career highlights include winning European 100m gold in 2018 and 200m gold in 2022. Coached by GLEN MILLS in Jamaica – the same man who guided BOLT – he is also a regular in the GB sprint relay team and a member of Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers in the UK. “Coach MILLS is a great coach,” says HUGHES. “He coached the fastest man in the world and he has an eye for error and will critique everything he sees.” Slightly better known as a 200m runner, in this kind of form he surely has a good chance this summer of breaking another long-time British record – the (19.94) mark set by JOHN REGIS, also at the 1993 World Championships in Stuttgart.

The European 100m record of 9.80 held by Olympic champion Marcel Jacobs of Italy is also potentially within reach. Find out more about Hughes in our ‘Ask the Athlete‘ interview from 2021 here.

BETH POTTER WINS MONTREAL TRIATHLON  The following article was published on the Tri247 website recently.

BETH POTTER notched her second WTCS win of the season – and her career – when powering clear late on the run to take the victory in Montreal. The Scot, who was extending Britain’s perfect start to the WTCS season with a fourth straight success, recovered from a 34-seconds deficit after the swim to work her away into a lead group of three on the run alongside LEONIE PERIAULT (FRA) and SUMMER RAPPAPORT (USA). That trio had it between them heading into the last 400 metres but it was POTTER, who landed the season-opener in Abu Dhabi, who found the decisive kick to win by two seconds from PERIAULT, with a further seven seconds back to RAPPAPORT. JEANNE LEHAIR (LUX), who briefly led on the last lap, had to settle for fourth. And there were some significant big names just behind – Katie Zaferes (USA) boosted her Olympic qualifying hopes with fifth, Taylor Knibb (USA) produced a superb display against the odds for sixth, with Cagliari winner Georgia Taylor-Brown (GBR) seventh.

SWIM – Just two days before KNIBB was an impressive fourth in the US National Time Trial Championship but she collected a 10-second penalty before this event even started after she missed the race briefing as she was flying in from Tennessee. But she reacted in the best way possible, out of the water in third just fractions behind VITTORIA LOPES (BRA) and LENA MEISNER (GER). She had to serve the penalty before the bike leg but a sprint to the transition area meant she was still able to exit in the front group. Most of the main contenders were in there, but not POTTER who had those 34 seconds to make up.

BIKE– The bike leg too was all about KNIBB. She led the 21-strong group at the end of the first of six laps and then produced her customary power-packed burst to surge clear, with RAPPAPORT the only one able to go with her. They’d opened up a 10-seconds gap at the end of lap two and though it held fairly steady, their advantage was 15 seconds at the bell. By the time they reached T2 they had 13 seconds to play with on the run, with ZSANETT BRAGMAYER (HUN) leading the big chase pack.

RUN – It was RAPPAPORT who was out of T2 first and she quickly put a gap between herself and the rest. At the same time BRAGMAYER had moved onto the shoulder of KRIBB and in behind things were starting to close up. LEHAIR was the big mover, so much so that she cut through the field and past RAPPAPORT but her lead didn’t last long and for most of the second and last lap it was PERIAULT, POTTER and RAPPAPORT who had it between them, with the Scot in front where it really mattered. Afterwards she said: “I didn’t have a great swim today but I made sure I stayed really cool and calm – and then worked really hard on the first two laps on the bike. “I had a bit of a niggle going into Cagliari last time so I think that’s why I was a little bit off there so to come here and do that makes me really happy. It’s given me a confidence boost going into the next one.”

OLYMPIC SPRINTER DELLA PASCOE DIES AGED 74  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph taken by MARK SHEARMAN in 1968, DELLA 2nd from left.

Two-time Olympian and former British 100m record-holder was one of Britain’s finest female sprinters in the late 1960s and early 1970s. DELLA PASCOE, who competed in the sprints at the 1968 and 1972 Olympics for Britain, has died aged 74. The former British 100m record-holder, who was married to fellow Olympian ALAN PASCOE, passed away peacefully on Thursday (June 22) after suffering from Parkinson’s Disease in recent years. Born in Southsea on March 28, 1949, as DELLA JAMES, she enjoyed great success as a teenage athlete, winning AAA under-17 titles at 100 and 220 yards in 1965, whereas at the English Schools Championships she took 150 yards gold at Watford in 1965, 100 yards gold in Blackburn in 1966 and English Schools 220 yards gold in Peterborough in 1967. Aged just 19 and competing for London Olympiades, she went to the Mexico Olympics in 1968 where she reached the semi-finals in the 100m. In the quarter-final, though, she tied Dorothy Hyman’s hand-timed UK 100m record of 11.3. In the same year she was also part of a world record-breaking squad in the 4x200m when she combined with MAUREEN TRANTER, JANET SIMPSON and VAL PEAT to clock (1:33.8) at Crystal Palace – a mark that took the mighty East Germans several years to beat.

With PBs of (11.36) for 100m and (23.5) for 200m, she was one of Britain’s best sprinters of the era and went on to represent England in the 100m and 200m at the Commonwealth Games in 1970 in Edinburgh. When it came to national titles she was crowned Women’s AAA indoor 60m champion in 1967 and took indoor 200m gold in 1969, whereas outdoors she won the Women’s AAA 100m title in 1972 in (11.86). In all she won 12 medals at the Women’s AAA Championships. At the 1972 Munich Olympics she was knocked out in the quarter-finals of the 200m but teamed up with ANDREA LYNCH, JUDY VERNON and ANITA NEIL to finish seventh in the 4x100m final in a UK record of (43.71). There was disappointment in 1973, though, when she was controversially overlooked for the 1974. Commonwealth Games team despite finishing top three in the 100m and 200m at the trials. Amid suspicions that she was penalised for being married to ALAN PASCOE, who was building a reputation as an outspoken voice of the athletes, she wasn’t even picked for the relay and decided to retire from the sport.

The PASCOES met as teenagers when ALAN joined the coaching group of DELLA’S father, DOUG JAMES. “ALAN and I met at the running track in Portsmouth,” she told AW in 2017. “I had to slow down for him to catch me.” On her father’s coaching, she added: “When I look back now I think we couldn’t have been fitter. He used to have us jumping over walls and in the stadium we’d go running up the steps, jumping over the barriers. It was very hard but we all used to do it all, and we were all really fit. That was the ground rules of his training – the fitness aspect.”

She worked as a creative arts teacher and later became heavily involved in charity work raising hundreds of thousands of pounds, partly through popular garden parties and quiz nights, in addition to having two children, LUCY and DANIEL.

ANDY BUCHART RUNS ‘PARKRUN’ WORLD RECORD OF (13.45)  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Scottish runner takes down ANDY BADDELEY’S long-standing mark at the Silverknowes event in Edinburgh ANDY BADDELEY’S reign as “parkrun world record-holder” came to an end on Saturday (June 24) when ANDY BUCHART improved his mark by three seconds to (13:45) at the Silverknowes parkrun in north-west Edinburgh. Baddeley ran (13:48) at the Bushy Park event in London in August 2012 and it has stood the test of time since. But BUCHART stormed around the Silverknowes course to claim the record. It is a performance that is sure to get more attention than the 5000m at this weekend’s European Team Championships in Poland, where in-form JONNY DAVIES races for Britain. Judging by the huge amount of attention that parkrun performances attract, it could even overshadow BUCHART’S previous achievements on the track.

BADDELEY once won the Dream Mile in Oslo with (3:49.38), but he later became arguably better known for being the long-time parkrun record-holder. World 1500m champion JAKE WIGHTMAN has also joked in the past that people can relate to his parkrun results moreso than his track times. BUCHART has also enjoyed success on the track and among other things was sixth in the Rio Olympic 5000m final in 2016 in (13:08.61). More recently he has stepped up to 10,000m with a Scottish record of (27:36.77) and Silverknowes was his first “race” since finishing first Brit, in 10th, at the Night of the 10,000m PBs in London in (27:47.43).

Parkrun, of course, famously describe their events as a “run” and not a “race” and the distances of parkrun courses are not always exactly 5km and the ground underfoot varies a lot from event to event.

Organisers describe the Silverknowes course as “scenic, flat and run on generally wide footpaths”, adding “as it borders the Firth of Forth, you can be exposed to the elements. The course is designed to be enjoyable, rather than for pure ‘PB’ speed.”

The 31-year-old Central AC athlete, who is married to 800m international LYNSEY SHARP, has also run (62:58) for the half-marathon and has ambitions of moving up to the marathon in coming years.

The fastest parkrun by a woman in the UK is 15:31 by Melissa Courtney-Bryant set last Christmas in Poole.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.
