CONGRATULATIONS TO ROBERT RIGBY  ROBERT following a vote on May 15, was elected the new Lord Mayor of Westminster.

ROBERT has been a member of Shaftesbury since 2012, and competes on a regular basis in cross country in the Metropolitan League, and was the Shaftesbury 60-64 points winner for the 2023-2024 season. ROBERT in the 3 seasons since turning 60, has finished either 1st of 2nd in all his Metropolitan League races.
On the road ROBERT currently competes in the 60-64 age-group, and concentrates on 10K and 10 Mile distances, and since 2022 has run 9 races finishing first 3 times in the 60-64 age-group, 2nd on 3 occasions also 3rd on 3 occasions.

I contacted ROBERT and this was his comments – During my year I will be championing ‘inspiring activity’ with a focus on children promoting exercise and the power of sport especially running and cricket. Sport of any sort can and does make a real difference, it inspires us as well as unites people and communities. I aim to visit primary schools within the City of Westminster talking about the importance of exercise, and promoting the Daily Mile, with the aim for them to then participate in the Westminster Mile in September.  I plan to run several half marathons during the year for both charities selected MCC Foundation and Cardinal Hume Centre including The Big Half in September & The Royal Parks Half Marathon in October, hopefully raising much needed funds.

During my mayor making service on 15th May I spoke about my running and membership of Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers!  I also talked about running competitively which reminded me of the time I ran the Great North Run, some years ago, an iconic half marathon in the City of Newcastle. The running slip for Shaftesbury is a distinctive black and white not too dissimilar to Newcastle United’s colours. So, while running and wearing this slip, I noticed I was getting a lot of support. It was only later, that I realised the locals thought I was a Geordie, given the black and white slip I was wearing, little did they know I was a Londoner and Spurs supporter; if they had known that fact, they may have been less supportive!

RESULTS
Just to clarify, that the results I publish can be different to those that are shown on the Power of 10. The differences relate to seasons and personal best performances. For example in the recent EYAL results, an athlete in the 200m ran (24.1), and on his profile his season’s best was shown as (23.88) indoors. As the 200m indoors and outdoors are totally different type of events, I had shown the (24.1) as a season’s best.
The Power of 10 publishes separate UK rankings for indoor and outdoor performances.

UK ATHLETICS YOUTH DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE, SOUTHERN PREMIER UPPER – The second of three fixtures took place at Hemel Hempstead on 26 May.

ROBERT RIGBY ELECTED LORD MAYOR OF WESTMINSTER  The following article was published in the Hampstead and Highgate News recently.

Councillor ROBERT RIGBY has been elected the new Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Westminster following a vote on May 15. Councillor RIGBY, whose late father was elected Mayor of Hornsey – later to become Haringey – in May 1963, has represented Regent’s Park ward on Westminster City Council since 2010. The 63-year-old has lived in St John’s Wood for more than 35 years and has previously served as chair of the planning committee and deputy cabinet member for finance and regeneration.

Councillor RIGBY said: “It is a huge honour and an enormous privilege to accept this role. “Westminster is truly an international and multicultural city, and our diverse and vibrant communities make it special and different from other London local authorities. “I very much look forward to meeting and supporting our many communities across the city during my year of office.” Championing two charities, the Cardinal Hume Centre and the MCC Foundation during his year in office, Councillor RIGBY aims to improve the lives of homeless young people and use cricket to connect different communities. Councillor RIGBY said: “One of my key themes for the mayoral year will be getting our young people fit and engaged with sport. “I can think of no better partner than the Marylebone Cricket Club Foundation, which does an amazing job introducing children and teens to the game. “Cricket is for everyone, and the MCC Foundation works in communities where young people might not perhaps have thought of trying it.”

His proposed agenda also includes school visits and promoting the Daily Mile project, which encourages children to run, jog or wheel for 15 minutes a day. Councillor RIGBY regularly runs 10k and cross-country races as a member of the Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers, and is involved with the London Marathon Foundation.

He has spent his working life in sales and marketing within the travel industry, including 20 years with Japan Airlines during which time he met his wife Emiko. Councillor RIGBY said: “As Lord Mayor it will be a year of firsts – the first time Westminster has had a Japanese Lady Mayoress, and I’m pretty sure it will be the first time for a Lord Mayor to run a 10k race in under 40 minutes!!” The Lord Mayor’s chaplain will be Father CHRISTOPHER COLVEN, past Rector of St James’s Church, Spanish Place, in Marylebone.

BEATRICE CHEBET SMASHES WORLD 10,000M RECORD  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently..

Kenyan clocks( 28:54.14) at the Pre Classic in Eugene to break LETESENBET GIDEY’S (29:01.03). Seventy years ago EMIL ZATOPEK ran (28:54.2) to set a men’s world 10,000m record in Brussels. At the time it seemed  impossible for women to get anywhere close to a mark like this and it would be more than 30 years before women could run the distance at major championships. In the early years of women’s 10,000m records being recognised by World Athletics, MARY DECKER ran (31:35.3) in Eugene, Oregon, in 1982. Such are the advances in female distance running, though, BEATRICE CHEBET became the first woman to break the 29-minute barrier on Saturday (May 25) in the same Oregon town as she ran (28:54.14) – more or less the same time ZATOPEK achieved 70 years earlier. The 24-year-old from Kenya ran seven seconds faster than Ethiopia’s LETESENBET GIDEY’S previous world record of (29:01.03), which was set in 2021. The race was billed as a world record attempt by GUDAF TSEGAY although the Ethiopian finished runner-up in (29:05.92) to go No.3 on the world all-time rankings.

TSEGAY and CHEBET stayed within a stride of the Wavelight Technology marking world record pace throughout the race – with TSEGAY doing most of the work and leading through halfway in (14:31.08) – until CHEBET, the two-time world cross-country champion, surged clear with three laps remaining. With two laps to go CHEBET pulled slightly ahead of the lights and finished strongly to enter the history books. With the event also doubling as the Kenyan trials for the Olympics, LILIAN RENGERUK was third in (29:26.89) and MARGARET KIPKEMBOI fourth in (29:27.59). “For Paris, I’m going to double,” said CHEBET. “But my target is to run 5000m first, then 10,000m comes second. Because this is my first 10,000m outside the country to run, and I’m so happy to run 28 minutes and a world record.

“The last lap just motivated me, especially when GUDAF dropped. Then I realised ‘Oh, I am the best, so I can go’. I just want to thank my management, my coach and everyone at home for their great support. I did very well because I see my body was responding good. “I say because GUDAF requested a world record, let me go with her and see how my body responded, and the body responded well then I decided to go.” In the men’s 10,000m, which was also the Kenyan Olympic trial, DANIEL MATEIKO won in (26:50.81) ahead of NICHOLAS KIPKORIR, who ran (26:50.94).

RIETI IN THE SPOTLIGHT DURING SUMMER OF 2024  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. The photograph is from the Rieti website.

Top athletes such as MARCELL JACOBS will use the Guidobaldi Stadium ahead of major championships in Rome and Paris thanks largely to its brilliant new CONICA surface. Nestled in the hills of Italy about an hour north-east of Rome, the small town of Rieti is a special place in the world of athletics. SEB COE and STEVE OVETT ran their fastest 1500m times in Rieti, with the latter’s (3:30.77) in 1983 being one of eight world records staged there. Indeed, such is the reputation of the town’s Guidobaldi Stadium when it comes to fast times, it has earned a reputation as “the Italian temple of running”.

Other world records set in Rieti include ASAFA POWELL’S (9.74) for 100m in 2007, DAVID RUDISHA’S (1:41.01) for 800m in 2010, NOAH NGENY’S 1000m mark of (2:11.96) in 1999, MARICICA PUICA’S mile of (4:17.44) in 1982 and DANIEL KOMEN’S (7:20.67) for 3000m in 1996, whereas NOUREDDINE MORCELI set world records for 1500m (3:28.86) and the mile (3:44.39) in 1992-93. NGENY’S and KOMEN’S records still stand today, too.

As well as its long-running end-of-season grand prix meeting, Rieti staged the 2013 European Under-20 Championships where winners included Britain’s DINA ASHERr-SMITH and JAKE WIGHTMAN, plus Belgian heptathlete NAFI THIAM, all of whom went on to win global titles. With the track located at 1300ft of mild altitude, it has an almost mystical reputation for producing great performances. Athletics aside, the NBA legend KOBE BRYANT grew up in Rieti as a child. There are even rumours the Guidobaldi Stadium will feature in the docu-series, Sprint, which is due to hit Netflix in July.

More immediately, the track is being used by athletes as a base ahead of the European Athletics Championships in Rome on June 7-12 and the Olympic Games in Paris later this summer. Italians such as MARCELL JACOBS, the Olympic 100m gold medallist, are basing themselves there, in addition to international athletes like ANDRE DE GRASSE, the reigning Olympic 200m champion from Canada.

Part of the reason for this is that the track has recently enjoyed an upgrade with the installation of a new CONIPUR Vmax surface from CONICA last year. This is the same track system that is installed at the Letzigrund Stadium in Zürich, Olympic Stadium in Stockholm and the Stade Louis-II in Monaco, all of which are stops on the Diamond League circuit and also renowned for producing fast times. The CONIPUR Vmax track was developed in cooperation with the Sports University of Cologne and is known for its top speed, reduced energy consumption during take-off and sprinting, and excellent energy recovery. Given this it is designed to be safe for athletes, preventing injuries. In addition, the CONIPUR Vmax track has a combination of an energy-reflecting base layer paired with a force-stabilizing top layer ensures a revolutionary running performance. Thanks to its exceptionally high mechanical properties, the track guarantees maximum resilience and durability.

Beyond this summer, Rieti is gearing up to host the European Under-18 Championships in 2026 where a new generation of athletes will be able to enjoy its magical qualities.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.
