CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November last year “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

SOUTHERN UNDER-13’S CHAMPIONSHIPS The South of England AA has introduced a new championship for the Under-13s this summer, which will be held on 11-12 August at Lee Valley alongside the Under-15, Under-17 and race walks championships.

COMMONWEALTH GAMES  Thursday 12 April – The first event of the morning session ZANE DUQUEMIN (Jersey) was competing in Pool A of the Discus, and this year he has been managing his injured shoulder. ZANE with his 2nd throw recorded a seasons best (57.66m) placing him in 4th place, qualifying for the Final. In the Triple Jump qualifying NATHAN FOX (England) did not start. The evening session opened with JADE LALLY (England) in the Discus, and she also has been nursing her shoulder, her series was below par and her best throw was (53.97m) which was her 3rd throw to finish in 7th place.
The final two races of the evening proved to be dramatic, firstly the 200m in which from the gun ZHARNEL HUGHES (England) was always in control and came into the home straight with a clear gap on his rivals. JEREEM RICHARDS however, began to run ZHARNEL down and in the final metres his right arm clashed with the left arm of the leader. ZHARNEL was knocked off balance and he staggered over the line in a time of (20.12 w0.9) with JEREEM also awarded the same time, but ZHARNEL was given the verdict on the photo finish and he set off on a victory lap.
But while he was celebrating, judges were analysing the race and they ruled that ZHARNEL was guilty of a lane infringement. Certainly, in the final few metres, it was clear he had stepped on the white line that separated him from JEREEM and it may have contributed to the clash of arms. Photograph’s of ZHARNEL at the start and finish.

The 800m race proved to be just as exciting with KYLE LANGFORD (England) looking very relaxed. The race unfolded as reigning champion NIJEL AMOS of Botswana led the field through 400m in 52 seconds, WYCLIFFE KINYAMAL surged to the front with 250m to go and looked the likely winner coming into the home straight. KYLE, meanwhile, had a lot of work to do as he was only in sixth place and well adrift with 100m to go. But, similar to the London 2017 final where he finished strongly for fourth, KYLE uncorked his big kick and almost caught the Kenyan in a thrilling finish as he ran a personal best (1:45.16) to miss out on victory by a fraction. He took .09 of a second off his world championships time, and is ranked UK No.1 . Photograph’s of KYLE with 200m to go, and celebrating in style.

Friday 13 April – As they say the last individual man standing was ZANE DUQUEMIN (Jersey) in the final of the Discus, ZANE just missed out qualifying for the last 8 finishing in 9th place (55.64m).

The first round of the 4x100m relay took place, with England in Heat 2 and it was good to see ZHARNEL HUGHES on Leg 2. England won the race in a time of (38.15) the fastest time of the Heats.

Saturday 14 April – What a fantastic result for ZHARNEL HUGHES and ENGLAND  winning the 4x100m relay Gold Medal in a seasons best (38.13). The team was REUBEN ARTHUR, ZHARNEL, RICHARD KILTY and HARRY AIKINES-ARYEETEY.

Well the 7 days of Athletics at Carrara Stadium have now come to a close, it has been very enjoyable experience, well organised with the weather being around 27-28 degrees every day.  The access to the stadium is superb with some 70 rows of x-ray equipment. Photograph’s some me signing off plus the security tents.

ALEXANDER STADIUM SET FOR £70 MILLION REVAMP Prime Minister announces investment which will increase capacity of UK Athletics’ home from 12,500 to 40,000 in time for Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Prime Minister Theresa May confirmed on Wednesday that Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium is to benefit from a substantial investment of £70million, and a major overhaul, ahead of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in the West Midlands city.
The changes to the 40-year-old stadium, which currently hosts the British Championships and Diamond League events annually, will bring an increase in capacity from the current 12,500 up to 40,000 in time for the Games, with 20,000 permanent seats to be retained following the showpiece.
There will also be the introduction of new community sports facilities within the new stand, a permanent warm-up track and a new conference meeting space.
Speaking during a visit to the home of UK Athletics, which will host the opening and closing ceremonies in addition to the track and field action at the Games in four years’ time, Mrs May said: “Birmingham’s dynamism, diversity and ambition capture exactly what it is to be part of the Commonwealth and I’m sure that, in four years’ time, the people of this city will host an incredible event which showcases the very best of Britain to the world.“The investment I am announcing today will transform the stadium into a state-of-the-art facility benefitting the local community and the region well beyond 2022.”

2018 LONDON MINI MARATHON – NATASHA TANNER U15 has been selected to run for for the Borough of Enfield and LUISA STAAB U13 for the Borough of Camden.

COMMONWEALTH GAMES PREVIEW – I watched the opening ceremony on a huge screen on Broadbeach beach, and as they say it was a ripper. The following day Thursday 5 April featured the Triathlon, which meant leaving the Hotel at 7.15am, getting the local bus to Broadbeach South, then a tram to Southport.  The Women’s race featured BETH POTTER (Scotland) and started at 9.30am with the 750m swim in calm waters, England’s JESSICA LEARMOUTH exiting the water first in (9.04 minutes) followed by the eventual winner FLORA DUFFY of Bermuda, BETH time was (9.50) and there were 8 athletes within 3 seconds of her. On the 20k bike leg BETH got detached from the group and finished in 12th place (31.28), there was quit a gap in front BETH as she set of on the 5k run, and she ran the 6th fastest time (17.24) to finish in 12th place (59.50). Apologies as the photo of BETH is a bit far away, everyone thought they would go out on one side of the road, and back on the other side. Nope the bikes went out and back this side, and the run on the other side.

The return journey featured a massive queue at the Tram station, but everybody was happy and in no time, we boarded the tram. The tram system was built 2 years and most of the tracks run parallel with the cars and as you can see by the photo they are very smooth and comfortable with a rather smart paint job.

Friday 6 April was a rest day and relaxed at Surfers Paradise, which is aptly named, this is also where the Games free events take place on the beach stage. Photo’s speak for themselves.

Saturday 7 April was slightly more hectic as we visited Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. I actually signed up to new SBH members, the first guy could be an offial and the second would probably challen ge DAN BRAMBLE’S club long jump record. Also as Southport was the Triathlon Relays for Mixed Teams, with BETH POTTER on Leg 1 for (Scotland) and this time the swim was 250m and BETH came out 7th (3.25), the bike Leg was 7km (11.13) and the run was 1500m (5.08) with BETH handing over in 7th place, which was their final placing.

When we got back JADE LALLY had sent some photograph’s. JADE told me he preparations have been OK, back injury has not gone away, just hope for the best in a few days time.

Photographs show JADE at home in the village, next a perspective JADE will see when she steps into the circle on Tuesday, finally that good old Aussie greeting.

Sunday 8 April Started as 10am with the Hammer Final with DEMPSEY MCGUIGAN (Northern Ireland) having one of his best competition series to finish in 6th place (SB 70.24m), his second best throw ever, his other 5 throws were between 67m to 68m, and is ranked UK No.7 in 2018. CHRIS BENNETT (Scotland)  was a shade under par, threw (65.22m) with his opening throw and with his 3rd attempt he put in an impressive threw only to have fouled to finish in 10th place.
Later in the afternoon SAM DAWKINS (Jersey) in his first major championships was drawn in Heat 1, the race started very quickly and in the final 100m SAM gritted his teeth fo finish 6th in a personal best (47.23) taking .08 of a second off his 2017 time, and ranks him UK N0.8 in 2018.

Monday 9 April – The morning session opened with the High Jump, Pool A featured DAVID SMITH (Scotland) who was had a near perfect qualification and cleared a seasons best (2.21m) qualifying for the final, which ranks him UK No.3 in 2008. In Pool B ALLAN SMITH (Scotland) also qualified for the final with a seasons best (2.21m) although he gave me the shivers at (2.18m) when he cleared the height impressively at his third attempt. He is also ranked UK No.3 in 2008.
The evening session had BETH POTTER(Scotland)  in the 10000m, and was sitting at the back of the pack, with 11 laps to go BETH got detached and eventually finished 18th (33:26.78). The exertions of completing 2 Triathlons in the previous 4 days must have taken its toll. Picture of BETH is a bit far away (sorry).

Tuesday 10 April – The morning session included 3 of our Stripes, firstly in the 800m KYLE LANGFORD (England) was drawn in Heat 1 Lane 8, and at the 100m break KYLE took up his customary position towards the back of the pack. with 300m to go moved up to 4th position, then in the home straight produced that customary burst of speed to ease past the line in 2nd place in a seasons best (1:45.61) his 3rd fastest time ever, ranking him UK no.2 in 2018. Next SAM DAWKINS (Jersey) following his excellent 400m run took on the 200m, drawn in Heat 3 Lane 6 SAM produced in what was a close finish a personal best (21.91 w-1.4) for 6th place, which is a Jersey National Record. In the final Heat 9 ZHARNEL HUGHES U23 came out looking extremely relaxed, and from his excellent start hit the home straight with a 5m lead, and won the race in a quick (20.34 w-0.4). Finally DAN BRAMBLE opened his qualifying round in Pool A of the Long Jump, and his session was over before it had hardly started, achieving the qualifying mark of 8m with his 2nd jump. Jumping a seasons best (8.02m w1.3) ranking him UK No.2 in 2018. Photographs of KYLE LANGFORD (4th place), SAM DAWKINS (all red) and ZHARNEL HUGHES (Lane 1), sorry DAN but on both of your jumps someone stood up at that precise moment, will get you in the Final.

Wednesday 11 April – Was jan evening session only and first up was the High Jump. ALLAN SMITH had an excellent competition to finish in fifth place with a seasons best (2.27m), which was his best since 2015 ranking him UK No.2, he cleared (2.21m) at his 3rd attempt and had 3 good attempts at (2.30m). DAVID SMITH finished in 10th place with (2.18m) just failing to clear his qualification height of (2.21m). Next in the Long Jump DAN BRAMBLE finished in 5th place with (7.94m w0.1) and would have needed a personal best to get a medal. Finally ZHARNEL HUGHES produce another dominating run to win Heat 2 of the 200m Semi-Final (20.37), from the gun ZHARNEL led the field, then in the home straight had a comfortable lead to cross the line easy up. It is looking promising for tomorrow’s nights Final.

NORTH LONDON AQUATICS CENTRE – Dear Lovely Supporters – We are so sorry that we’ve not been in touch. Our exciting project of building a new deep water pool takes up all of our spare time and we are just slowing down to take a little break this weekend and so a chance to fill you in.
There is so much to tell you, but we’ll try to keep it brief!

We have a new Patron – the very lovely Maddy Hopson. Maddy is a disabled diver and coach and shares our vision of getting divers into the Paralympics.
The plans for the Pool continue to evolve. We aim to make this a centre for fully inclusive disability water sport. As well as this we will be adding in new exciting sports such as underwater rugby and hockey. We are learning all the time and are also interested in deptherapy which is rehabilitation through scuba diving (see our Facebook post today)
In the month of April we are the community matters green token scheme in Waitrose, Mill Hill. Do pop in and select us if you can!

JAZZ SEARS MAKING GREAT STRIDESThe following was published in Athletics Weekly recently.
JAZZ and her coach CRAIG ANDREW. Are they a match made in heaven? In the athletics sense, the answer is yes, definitely!

During a relatively short time – since the summer of 2016 – JAZZ has made herself one of Britain’s best young triple jumpers and CRAIG has coached her every step of the way.
JAZZ was previously successful in other events and indeed has won numerous county championships in Bedfordshire at long jump, high jump and sprinting. She switched to triple jumping after terming up with CRAIG. “It was his idea,” she recalls.
CRAIG recognised his new athlete’s potential in simple terms. “I could see how she could bound” says the sports rehabilitation graduate.
Clearly CRAIG had foresight – in only her third triple jump contest JAZZ won the 2016 England under-15 title with the best UK performance in the age-group for that year. Subsequent victories include the 2017 SIAB international. “It was my first time going off the 11 metres board,” she remembers – and, this year the England indoor championships with a PB, at the time, of 12.34m which improved (from 12.23m) the under-17 UK indoor all-time record JAZZ had herself set in January.
Even then JAZZ wasn’t finished, for in early March she beat her record once more with a 12.37m in a Windsor open meeting. To reach such heights obviously requires committed training and workload reflects this, with plyometrics, sprints and gym work among the sessions. There is also hill running, although more than one member of the training squad wryly refers to this as a death session!
Nevertheless, says JAZZ, most of the sessions are fun. “And CRAIG is an easy guy to get on with,” she insists.
A decent gymnast before she switched to athletics, JAZZ has high hopes of qualifying for the European Under-18 Championships this year and again being a regular in domestic circles, but what improvements does she need to make? “My leg shoot is perhaps the weakest phase of my jumping,” the 16 year-old says. “So I have to think of improving on that by bettering my flexibility.”
Quick sprinting times could help, too, though her coach doesn’t see a lack of speed as an obvious weakness. “Her 60m and 100m times don’t reflect just how quickly JAZZ moves on the runway,” says CRAIG.
Besides that, JAZZ has some fast training partners to help her in that direction. Among them is KIERRA GRANT, a 60m winner at the London Indoor Games this winter as well as being the Bedfordshire Under-17 long jump champion. She and JAZZ are childhood friends and both, previous with Luton AC, are now members of Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers.
Finally, the affable JAZZ has a message for other hopeful young athletes. “Trust the process and your ability to succeed,” she says. “With patience and determination you will achieve what you set out to do. You may encounter hurdles on the way, but they only make you a better athlete for it.”
