NEW CLUB RECORD – Congratulations to NAOMI PALMER, ESTHER FATUADE, JAZZ SEARS and HANNAH FOSTER who broke the club 4x300m U17 Women relay record with a time of (2:47.43) at Bromley last Sunday, which ranks them UK No.1 team in 2018. The previous record was (2:55.44) by RACHEL CARTERBLESSING ADJEI-OKWABISOPHIE MADDOCKHANNAH FOSTER at Norwich on 30 April 2017.

MANY THANKS TO OUR SHAFTESBURY VOLUNTERRS – Last week-end we organised the start area at the Vitality 10K and Westminster Mile events.  The photograph is the team following the Westminster Mile, well done.

MIDDLESEX YOUNG ATHLETES LEAGUE – Took place last Saturday 26 May at Perivale, still awaiting results to be published.

UK YOUTH DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE UAG PREMIER – Took place on Sunday 27 May at Bromley.
We had good day at the office with lots of PBs and SBs, the highlights were the relays and lowlights were the number of events where our members failed to register a performance for a variety of reasons eg running out of lane, so it’s all about discipline in the throws and jumps but it’s early season, so these errors will be eliminated as the season progresses.

Particular thanks to the following who stepped up at short notice to cover late withdrawals, CHINWE IWUNZE competed in her 4th event, the 4 x 400m relay in addition to 100m 200m and 4 x 100m, JAMIE HARPER who ran the 3000m as well as the high Jump where he had a massive PB of 1.80m and the 800m and KRISTIAN IMROTH who won the 3000m and came back to win the 1500m steeplechase. There were many more athletes making impressive debuts.

We’re now half way through the YDL season and our 2nd place at Bromley all but secures our place in the final. Of course we must keep getting out our best team possible particularly as the next match is at Eton on Sunday 1 July, the home of the 3th placed team Windsor.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November last year “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

UPDATE ON HUGH RICHARDS PARKRUNLast week HUGH competed in the East Coast Park Parkrun, unbeknown to me this was in Singapore. HUGH and PIPPA are currently visiting HUGH’S daughter. This Saturday PIPPA and HUGH intend doing the West Coast Park Parkrun.

It’s 40 years this August that JOHN DRYDEN, JULIAN GOATER and HUGH RICHARDS completed in the Singapore International Games and it’s still just as hot and humid! I recall JULIAN won the 5k and JOHN and HUGH came 2nd and 3rd respectively in the 3k Steeplechase.

LOUGHBOROUGH INTERNATIONAL – Took place last Sunday 20 May and this was the 60th staging, having established a reputation as the domestic curtain-raiser for Britain’s top athletes.

Shaftesbury had a superb turnout with many of our up and coming athletes competing, with top performance of the day going to SEB RODGER who matched the European qualifying standard of (49.80) in the 400m hurdles. The Rio Olympian, whose best is 49.19 from 2013, said: “It’s nice to go sub-50. I know it should be normal, but I’m quite inconsistent with my times, so to run like that I’m very happy.” The photograph of SEB following his impressive win.

There were wins from DARRYL NEITA (England 100m, CHARLIE DOBSON (GB Juniors 200m), ALLAN SMITH (Scotland High Jump) and DAN BRAMBLE (England Long Jump).

On a day dominated by the royal wedding in Windsor, the new king of domestic 10,000m running was crowned in Highgate when ALEX YEE beat the ultra-experienced ANDY VERNON and CHRIS THOMPSON to take the national title. ALEX only turned 20 in February and remarkably focuses more on triathlon than running. But on Saturday night in north London he finished fifth overall – and first Briton – in his 10,000m debut in a European Cup race won by RICHARD RINGER of Germany.
ALEX’S time of (27:51.94) was less than five seconds outside the British under-23 record of (27:47.0) set in 1971 by DAVE BEDFORD, who was among the packed throngs of spectators on Saturday night in addition to IAAF president SEBASTIAN COE, European Athletics president SVEIN ARNE HANSEN and former world snooker champion and keen runner RONNIE O’SULLIVAN – to name just three. Photograph shows ALEX in third place.

RONNIE is a member of Woodford Green with Essex Ladies and from 2007 to 2014 ran 8 Metropolitan league races, with a best finish of 53rd. In 2015 he turned his sights on the Parkrun, with a best time of (18.08) at Hackney Marshes.

WHAT A WEEK-END – Firstly apologies for the later than normal issue of the Newsletter, this was due to the phenomenal number of performances by our athletes last week-end. The County Championships featured Shaftesbury athletes from as far afield as Dorset to Inverness, with undoubtedly the largest entry of Shaftesbury athletes we have ever had. As of Monday, we had 67 County Champions, which must be the best ever performance by a club in the UK.

SUPREME IN THE DISCUS – Currently we have 4 of our Dicus throwers ranked 1,2,4 & 5 in the UK, with NICK PERCY at No.1 with (62.50m), No.2 is GREGORY THOMPSON (61.29m), No.4 GEORGE EVANS U23 (58.67m) and No.5 ZANE DUQUEMIN (57.66m). NICK, GREGORY and GEORGE are currently at Universities in the USA, and the photograph shows NICK and GREGORY relaxing in Bloomington, Indiana

BRITISH ATHLETIC LEAGUE PREMIER – A much-weakened team had the long journey up to Leigh in Lancashire for the opening BAL Premiership match on 5 May. The clash with BUCS and with many of our athletes still away on warm weather training, this meeting really tested the club’s strength in depth. All the teams suffered and there was serious talk to have Round One of the BAL delayed a week to avoid a clash with BUCS in future years. The move would involve a clash with the County Championships which was deemed a much better option the very poor / almost non-existent attendance by Senior athletes.

The sprinters did very well with a clear win for JOHN OTUGADE in the 100m “A” and a very close 2nd in the 200m “A”. New member JIMMY THORONKA had a good BAL debut with a 3rd in the 100m “B” and a 2nd in the 200m “B”, as a last-minute substitute. We then had 2 debutants in the 400m where there was a PB for LUKE SMITH and a SB for U20 LOUIS OCTAVE.

Our thanks to TOM BUTLER on his BAL debut who volunteered at the last minute to run the 800m and then went on to win the “B” string 3000m where he was very ably supported by new member ALEX LEPRETRE. Another double up came from GLEN WATTS who warmed up with the 400m Hurdles before running a very clever tactical race to come 2nd in the 3000m S/C. Solid performances from U20 athletes and first timers TYRIQ LAFEUILLE (400m H) and GEORGE GROOM (1500m) kept the points accumulating.

The highlight in the throws was the performance of new member SCOTT LINCOLN in winning the shot, ably supported by ANGUS MCINROY who not only achieved a 3rd place in his speciality event, the Discus, but also stepped in to cover the Shot and Javelin. New boy JACOB LANGE was solid in the Hammer and therefore allowed JAMES HAMBLIN to win the “B”. Another new member to contribute to the team performance was ALI SHAN AZMAT in the Javelin. Special mention to club throws coach and former World Masters Discus Champion NEVILLE THOMPSON, who at the age of 63 became the oldest member to compete for SBH in the BAL, with his 5th place in the “B” Discus.

The jumps saw AKIN COWARD achieve a good 2nd place in the High Jump, whilst our 2 Pole Vaulters, ETHAN WALSH and ROSS HAJIPANAYI were both clear in 3rd place in the “A” and “B” competitions. The horizontal jumps saw consistent performances from ALANDO ALFRED who produced a PB in the Long Jump and his 2nd longest Triple Jump. He was partnered by another debutant AARON ELLINGTON, in both events. Last but not least was the contribution from coach, official and team manager CLYDE GORDON who covered both the High Jump and the 110m Hurdles.

Team Result – 1st Birchfield Harriers (345 points), 2nd Sheffield (318), 3rd Cardiff (280), 4th SBH (259), 5th Thames Valley Harriers (250), 6th Woodford Green with Essex Ladies (246), 7th Newham & Essex Beagles (242), 8th Swansea (242).

With just 23 points covering the bottom 5 clubs, the team spirit and hard work saw SBH come through at the end to secure a Top 4 finish.
The next round on Saturday 2 June is a double header with our Women’s team in Cardiff where only a top 2 finish will be good enough.

DAVE BEDFORD SAYS FAREWELL TO THE LONDON MARATHONDAVE has announced his decision to leave his role as a consultant with London Marathon Events, which includes recruiting the elite fields for the London Marathon and all other running events organised by the company. He will step down in November.

DAVE, a legendary runner on the track and the former 10,000m world record holder, has played a pivotal role with the London Marathon for more than three decades. He famously ran the first edition of the race in 1981 following a bet in his night club. Over the years, he served on the Board of Directors from 1986 – 1988, representing British Athletics and in 1989 was appointed to recruit the London Marathon elite field. He became London Marathon Race Director in 2000, a role he held until 2012 when he became a part-time consultant. He also played a leading role in the formation of the World Marathon Majors.

NICK BITEL, CEO of London Marathon Events Ltd, said: “The London Marathon is deeply indebted to DAVE for all that he has done for the event over the years. During his tenure as Marketing and Sponsorship Director and then as Race Director, he was instrumental in developing the London Marathon into the world’s greatest marathon and most successful one-day annual charity fundraising event. Time and time again he has recruited the world’s greatest athletes and masterminded unforgettable elite races and world records. He will be greatly missed and we wish him well.”

DAVE said: “I have been fulfilled working with the London Marathon for many years. London Marathon’s growth and success was only possible because of the great team I worked with. We should not forget, however, that the success of the London Marathon was only possible because of the hard work done by CHRIS BRASHER and JOHN DISLEY in founding the event.”

DAVE was born on 30 December 1949. He is a former GB international long distance athlete and set the 10,000m world record on 13 July 1973 when he recorded 27:30.80. He also held the British Records for all distances from 2000m to 10,000m, including the 3000m steeplechase. He finished sixth in the 10,000m at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. He has also served as Chairman of the IAAF Road Running Commission. He currently is a Non-Executive Director of UK Athletics and a Director of Hendon Football Club. He was awarded the OBE in 2014 for his services to athletics and charity fundraising.

NEW IAAF RULES ON FEMALE CLASSIFICATION – The following article was on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
Took Global governing body hope fresh guidelines will help level the playing field Female runners with naturally high testosterone levels will have to race against men or switch events unless they take medication under new IAAF rules which begin in November.

The rules will apply to women who race in track events from 400m up to the mile and the IAAF believes the new measures will stop women such as Olympic 800m champion CASTER SEMENYA with high testosterone levels gaining a competitive edge.
The rules for athletes who have ‘differences of sexual development’ apply to the 400m, 400m hurdles, 800m, 1500m, one mile races and combined events over the same distances.
Athletes who want to compete must take medication for six months before they can compete – and then maintain a lower testosterone level. If they do not wish to take the medication they can compete in international competitions in disciplines other than track events from 400m to the mile. Or they can compete in men’s or mixed gender competitions or domestic (non-international) events.
Those who want to compete are not required to undergo surgery.
An IAAF statement says the rules are “in no way intended as any kind of judgement on or questioning of the sex or the gender identity of any athlete”.
The global governing body points to their latest research which showed there is a performance advantage for females with higher testosterone over the track distances.
“We want athletes to be incentivised to make the huge commitment and sacrifice required to excel in the sport, and to inspire new generations to join the sport and aspire to the same excellence,” said IAAF president SEBASTIAN COE.
“As the international federation for our sport we have a responsibility to ensure a level playing field for athletes. Like many other sports we choose to have two classifications for our competition – men’s events and women’s events. This means we need to be clear about the competition criteria for these two categories.
“Our evidence and data show that testosterone, either naturally produced or artificially inserted into the body, provides significant performance advantages in female athletes. The revised rules are not about cheating – no athlete with a DSD (difference of sexual development) has cheated – they are about levelling the playing field to ensure fair and meaningful competition in the sport of athletics where success is determined by talent, dedication and hard work rather than other contributing factors.”

BRUCE TULLOH, BAREFOOT CHAMPIONOF THE 1960s, DIES – The following article was on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
European 5000m gold medallist, coach and author was an athletics pioneer in many ways, BRUCE TULLOH, European 5000m champion in 1962, one of Britain’s best and most popular runners of the 1960s, trans-America record-breaker, and an ongoing influential figure in British athletics as a coach and writer, died on April 28, at his home in Marlborough, of cancer, aged 82.

Tulloh was the first non-African to compete without shoes in top-level international races, and he argued that the lack of any weight on his feet enabled his to accelerate more suddenly. That could give him a surprise winning break even on world-class fields like the 1962 European 5000m, when he got away with 700m to go.
Deceptively frail-looking, he was adored by the crowds and media, who loved to see the boyish-looking underdog with the high, protruding elbows skim away time after time from sturdy Russians and Poles in the international dual matches that in those days were the main competitions between Games.
He won AAA and Inter-Counties titles, set a British six-miles record (27:23.8) in 1966, was twice runner-up in the English National Cross-Country Championship, placed seventh in the International Cross-Country and enjoyed domestic success with Portsmouth AC, who he helped turn into one of the strongest clubs in the country.
His Olympic aspirations were triply thwarted – by the heat and humidity of Rome in 1960, by an attack of measles that kept him home in 1964 and by the prospect of Mexico’s altitude in 1968.
With the disincentive of Mexico, TULLOH hit on a different challenge, when he had the outrageous idea of attacking the record for a coast to coast crossing of America. It was an unlikely project for a runner with no marathon or ultra credentials – and whose training was typically light on miles and strong on quality – but TULLOH had deep reserves of determination, enthusiasm and applied intelligence.
With minimal sponsorship and only his wife SUE and their seven-year-old son CLIVE as crew – and despite suffering severe ankle pain that forced him to spend several days walking eastward in heavy boots – he covered the 2876 miles from Los Angeles to New York in 64.9 days, more than four days faster than the previous mark, an achievement that later led to him being called “the original Forrest Gump.”
A renaissance man, TULLOH excelled as an athlete, coach, teacher at Marlborough College, scientist, musician and author. He described his record-breaking trans-America journey in a book that has been listed as one of the best running books of all time, Four Million Footsteps (1970) – one of 23 titles he published.
In 1971 he lived for several days with the running tribe of Tarahumara Indians in New Mexico and described the experience in the London Observer, 40 years before CHRIS MCDOUGALL supposedly discovered them and wrote about it in his best-selling Born to Run.
As a coach of many British athletes over the years, TULLOH guided most notably RICHARD NERURKAR. He also had periods teaching and coaching in America and in Kenya, where he coached Olympic medallist MIKE BOIT. Readers of AW also soaked up his advice in articles such as this one here.
As a masters runner, TULLOH’S times included 1:16 for a half-marathon aged 60 and a 2:47 marathon in his late 50s. He continued to compete to his late 70s and ran until his final illness made it impossible.
There will be a private family cremation and a memorial gathering in Marlborough, likely to be in late June or early July.
