RAY POWELL – Works as a painter & decorator, and for the Queen’s 90th Birthday in 2016 RAY painted one of his local Post Box in Shefford, Bedfordshire. Well RAY has now painted 6 more boxes (with the permission of the Post Office). The photograph shows him putting a final touch to one of his masterpieces. RAY has been a member of Shaftesbury for just over 42 years. Recently RAY had spotted a letter in the Daily Telegraph from a Mr Nicholas Horne of Castle Cary, Somerset suggesting our pillar boxes require a coat of fresh paint. RAY’S response was published in Saturday’s Telegraph inviting him to view the 7 completed pillar boxes.
MARILYN OKORO BACK IN BUSINESS – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
MARILYN says a settled new lifestyle in the United States is the reason for her impressive return to form, which includes a fast 600m in (1:26.72) indoors last month.
The former British champion has an outdoor 800m best of (1:58.45) dating back to 2008, which ranks her No.6 on the UK all-time lists, but has not broken two minutes for the distance since 2013.
But MARILYN was recently appointed director of track and field operations at the University of Central Florida and has started the 2017 in encouraging form with a 600m time which is only eight hundredths of a second short of JENNY MEADOWS UK indoor record.
MARILYN is unlikely to run the British Indoor Championships the weekend and instead is due to race 800m on 10 February in Boston, but she is setting her sights on London 2017 and believes she can be competitive right up until Tokyo 2020. “I think I have another Olympic cycle in me” she says “As for London this year – it would be a dream to race there”.
MARILYN has struggles for form in the last three years due to a mixture of hamstring problems and the anxiety of not knowing how permanent her stay in the US will be. At last year’s British Olympic trials, for example, she finished an underpar third in her 800m heat in 2.06.
“In 2013I came to the US and thought I’d give the sport one more go, “I needed a change and maybe there was a bit of escapism in me, but it’s starting to pay off.”
MARILYN began to be coached by JOHNNY GRAY – a four-time Olympian whose 1:42.60 in 1985 still stands as the US record. “He’s really laid-back, extremely motivational and has an amazing background as an athlete,” she says. “NATASHA DANVERS put him in my direction and things are going well with him. We believe proper preparation prevents poor performance – and at the moment I don’t think I’ve ever felt stronger.”
It follows a period of uncertainty for the Brit, who says that until she got her new job she was flitting back and forth from the US to the UK every three months on a waiver programme but she now has a visa which allows her to stay longer. Initially, all the medics she knew and trusted were in the UK, too. “I was doing a lot of remote physio, which wasn’t ideal, bit in April 2016 I met a great physio in the US.”
“Many times I’ve wanted to come home. My life has never been super-smooth but the last four years have been the most turbulent. But I’ve learnt never to give up on your dreams. If I end athletics, I want it to be on my terms.”
MARILYN’S best form was in 2008 when she won the 800m in style at the annual grand prix in London. On her event now, she says. “Of course I watched everything during the Olympics. I’m a big fan of the sport and you have to keep an eye on the opposition!
“Hats off to LAURA MUIR and LYNSEY SHARP – they have really come on and are running off a lot of confidence. And I’m looking forward to racing SHELAYNA OSKAN-CLARKE again as she’s an old training partner of mine and she’s come on leaps and bounds. Ultimately I respect everyone I race but I don’t fear anyone.”
MARILYN adds, “I’m relishing to be that person who challenges CASTER (SEMENYA, Olympic champion) in that last 100m. CASTER has set the mark and it’s a climate I’m looking forward to running as I think it’s a cleaner era now.”

NORTH WEST LONDON LEAGUE – Information on the fourth fixture of five which takes place on Saturday 18 February at Hampstead Heath Extension.
The race courses are all within an area known as Hampstead Heath Extension, off Hampstead Way. This area has not previously been used for cross country running although it is not far distant from the much loved and often used Parliament Hill Fields. The courses devised by London Heathside within the Extension area should work well for young athlete events being closely confined and spectator friendly. The slight drawback is that there is no car parking within the parkland area and some of the nearby roads have restricted parking. Car sharing or better still use of public transport is advised. (Golders Green Underground Station is about half mile). To assist you in getting to the park area the postcode for SatNav users is (NW11 7DP)
The first race will start at 12 noon (Under 11 Girls) – programme will then follow the usual pattern. There are changing rooms with toilets are available.
Note: You do not have to be pre-entered, just turn up and run. Will any of our Female athletes please see TONY SMITH who will give you a race number
