ART OF THE ATHLETE EXHIBITION IS UP AND RUNNING  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

ASHLEIGH SPILLIOPOULOU looks at the unique collection of art at the Zari Gallery in London this month. Have you ever felt defined by your sport? Many of us know our fellow athletes by their performances on the track, on the road or in the field but we may know little more about them beyond their sporting accolades. It was this sentiment that inspired GAVIN JOHNSON to devise an exhibition to showcase the artistic talents of track and field athletes. GAVIN, a highly accomplished javelin thrower and artist, recognised that there were numerous individuals within the track and field community who had hidden talents which they had not the opportunity to explore, develop or showcase. His own experience of returning to painting during the COVID-19 lockdown had led to his work being displayed in London’s Zari Gallery, a cultural hub which celebrates art which transcends borders and is inclusive of all mediums and artists. Having built up a strong rapport with the gallery’s founder, GEORGINA DHILLON, GAVIN pitched his idea for the exhibition which strongly aligned with the gallery’s values. The idea struck a chord with GEORGINA who agreed to help bring GAVIN’S vision into existence.

The exhibition’s purpose was to be multifaceted. First, it would offer athletes the opportunity to demonstrate another side of their personality and develop their identity outside of sport. Secondly, they could gain valuable experience of the exhibition process and earn some money from sales of their pieces. Third, members of the public would be able to buy artwork from some of the world’s most exciting athletics prospects and would also gain an insight into the people behind the performances. Finally, the exhibition would give back to the athletic community through the 30% of sales which is going to two charities who support athletes and coaches in their development towards international sporting success.

The first of the two charities is the RON PICKERING Memorial Fund, a charity set up in memory of RON PICKERING; a PE teacher, national athletics coach and prolific BBC commentator. Ron championed the development of young athletes into well rounded individuals as well as sport stars so this exhibition would have resonated closely with his vision. Each year, the charity offers small but significant grants to hundreds of young athletes based on an achievement and need basis. The other charity to partner with the exhibition is the LLOYD COWAN Bursary, set up in memory of LLOYD COWAN MBE, an exceptional coach and athlete in his own right who tragically lost his life to COVID-19 in January 2021. LLOYD firmly believed that no one with sporting potential should be held back due to lack of support or opportunity and as such the Bursary offers grants to coaches and unfunded athletes aged 16-23, for whom cost is a barrier to accessing developmental opportunities within athletics. After months of preparation by the gallery, artists and charities, ‘The Art of the Athlete’ opened its doors on May 9. The exhibition will run until Friday 27 May and in total it features 35 current and former athletes. Within the group there are multiple established artists, including ROALD BRADSTOCK and GAVIN JOHNSON, who have a wealth of experience in the exhibition process. BRADSTOCK is in fact known as the ‘Olympic Picasso’ as the only three time Olympian-artist. In the same breath, there are numerous athletes who are having their artwork displayed publicly for the first time. For these athletes the exhibition represents a highly valuable learning experience and they have been supported throughout the process by the gallery founder, GEORGINA, who has dedicated copious amounts of time to guiding them throughout the journey.

Amongst them is Olympic 800m silver medallist, KEELY HODGKINSON, who works with paint, ink and wash amongst other mediums to create vibrant artwork on paper. KEELY has been supported by the RON PICKERING Memorial Fund since she was 15, bringing a new level of sentimentality to her inclusion in the exhibition. Also amongst the artists is Welsh discus thrower, HARRISON WALSH. A Para European bronze medallist and Tokyo Paralympian, HARRISON’S athletic prowess is obvious to see. Less widely known, however, are his artistic capabilities. Aged 26, HARRISON aspires to be a full-time artist and he has worked with a pen to create exquisite portraits of ROGER BANNISTER and KELLY HOLMES in celebration for the “The Art of the Athlete” exhibition. His hope is that the exposure he gains through the exhibition could be a stepping stone on to further artistic opportunities. Across the artists in the exhibition, there are an eclectic mix of mediums, sizes and styles of art. From acrylic paintings to photography and from bright colours to monotone, there is something to suit a wide array of tastes. For some of the artists, inspiration has been drawn from the sporting world with images of notable athletes as well as abstract capturings of runners, jumpers and throwers. For others, their subjects stray entirely from sport, with beautiful portraiture, landscapes and patterns on display. It is a true celebration of diversity in style and skill. Many of the athlete-artists have been expressing their excitement on social media and you can follow many of their journeys on Instagram and Twitter. A list of all those involved can be found here:

THE SKY’S THE LIMIT FOR ALEXANDER THE GREAT  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph by MARK SHEARMAN.

Splendid new stadium in Birmingham is capable of staging European and world championships but where will this leave London? The Müller Birmingham Diamond League was peppered with world-class performances but the biggest winner was the venue itself. For many people, Saturday was the first time they had visited the Alexander Stadium since its redevelopment and they were shocked – and in most cases delighted – by the scale of the transformation. Barely any traces of the old Alexander Stadium remain. In some ways the new arena even feels more like the London Stadium with its grey and white structures and concourses.

Don’t take my word for it. “The stadium is really beautiful and I’m really proud of the way they’ve built it,” said DINA ASHER-SMITH. “It doesn’t even feel like the old Alexander Stadium. It almost feels like we’re in somewhere like Zurich at one of the fancy ones! So I think it’s going to be an amazing Commonwealth Games.” With ASHER-SMITH winning the women’s 100m on Saturday in a mere (11.11) and the men’s race won by AARON BROWN of Canada in just (10.13), a theory escalated during the Diamond League that the track is slow. This follows reports in the media that Commonwealth Games organisers have installed a track that is not as expensive as those used at global championships such as the upcoming World Championships in Eugene. The modest times were probably as much due to the cool and breezy weather, though. Certainly the athletes felt the track was fine and they loved the stadium generally. ISSY BOFFEY, winner of the 800m B race on Saturday, said: “The track and atmosphere is insane … the track is quick!” Australian OLLI HOARE, who finished third in the men’s 1500m, added that he felt the tracks in Eugene and Birmingham were the same and that the only difference on race day would be the weather. DAVID WEIR, the wheelchair racing legend, said: “It was entirely different to when I raced here many moons ago. The stadium is amazing – it feels really new. It will bed in soon.” In the field events the new arena accommodated some brilliant performances. MALAIKA MIHAMBO of Germany soared over seven metres in the women’s long jump, and Olympic women’s discus champion VALARIE ALLMAN also threw a decent distance, saying: “It’s been a few years since I’ve been to Birmingham and I am in awe of the facility, the crowd, everything, it is incredible and I can’t wait to come back again.”

Not everything was perfect on Saturday, of course. There were grumbles from spectators being forced to use public transport or taxis to get to the arena because car parking in Perry Park was not allowed. There were also stories of cross wires and tension between the athletics governing bodies and the wider Birmingham 2022 body charged with overseeing the Games in July and August and who were, not surprisingly, using the Diamond League as a test event for the Games. Perry Barr is not the most salubrious area either. The nearest railway station, Perry Barr, is one mile away and the city centre itself is four miles away. Still, the splendid new stadium is worth making a minor trek to see. What’s more, it is certainly more impressive than the nearby Perry Barr greyhound stadium that Birchfield Harriers used as its home many years ago. Geographically, it is also nicely and centrally positioned on a national level. So could the new Alexander Stadium be the centrepiece of a bid to stage the European or World Championships? Bizarrely, Britain has never staged the European event in its entire 92-year history, whereas when it comes to global events the nation has developed a reputation of being a safe pair of hands following London 2012 and London 2017.

Some believe that big-time athletics belongs in the British capital city. Yet Crystal Palace remains in desperate need of redevelopment (the recent ITV series The Games successfully papered over the cracks but staging a ‘proper athletics meeting’ is a different ball game), whereas negotiations are ongoing when it comes to terminating the sport’s long-term deal with the London Stadium in exchange for a multi-million pound pay off. The latter is reminiscent of the £41m legacy funding ‘sweetener’ that UK Athletics was given after the Government reneged on its promise in 2001 to stage the IAAF World Championships at Lee Valley in north London. Certainly, if athletics walks away from the London Stadium in Stratford then it should be handsomely compensated with money that can be pumped into other areas of the sport. Ultimately it depends on whether a venue outside London can regularly draw in big crowds for Diamond League and national championships every summer. Historically the sport has struggled to do this. Look at Don Valley, for instance, a large arena built for the 1991 World University Games but demolished in 2013 because, among other things, athletics events simply struggled to fill it. Perhaps the answer is for Birmingham to become the home of an annual Diamond League, national championships and meetings like the English Schools Championships, with a street athletics event created for central London so at least the British capital enjoys a taste of the world’s No.1 sport for one or two days each summer.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

In the women’s third and final contest in the 2022 Arena Games Triathlon series, ZSANNETT BRAGMEYER of Hungary surprised the field to take a 4 seconds margin of victory over super runner BETH POTTER of Great Britain. POTTER, who won the first Arena Games event in Munich and took 2nd in the final event in Singapore on 7 May, took the overall title in the first eSports World Triathlon Championship series by a 713 to 645 points margin over BRAGMEYER. Olympic silver medalist GEORGIA TAYLOR-BROWN of Great Britain took third on the final day – 36 seconds behind BRAGMEYER – and finished third in the series, 19 points behind BRAGMEYER.
BRAGMEYER overcame a long and exhausting path to win the day as she had to race five races, having had to qualify through the repechage. POTTER’S day took a lot out of her too. “I was in a wall of pain today” POTTER spoke with a grimace immediately after the race.

Stage 1 – Super swimmer LEARMONTH gained little on the swim, but charged the bike and built a 7 seconds lead on GEORGIA TAYLOR-BROWN with POTTER 2 seconds further arrears and they approached the curved treadmill run. With a fast transition, POTTER advanced to second place, while SIAN RAINSLEY passed TAYLOR-BROWN for third place.
That left POTTER clear for the win, RAINSLEY in second six seconds behind with ZSANNETT BRAGMEYER in third (+9.7).

Stage 2 – In this run-bike-swim order stage, BRAGMEYER and POTTER were close on the bike, and ZSANNETT made up 3 seconds in the run through transition. Utilizing her superior swim skills, ZSANNETT opened a short lead on POTTER and with TAYLOR-BROWN and ANABEL KNOLL 21 and 23 seconds back in 3rd and 4th.

Stage 3 – Back to a classic swim-bike-run final stage, which is conducted in a pursuit format, POTTER and ZSANNETT started the swim well ahead over RAINSLEY. After the swim, ZSANNETT and POTTER arrived at the bikes virtually tied with TAYLOR-BROWN and RAINSLEY 20-plus seconds arrears. POTTER once again made up time in the run through transition. On the final run segment, BRAGMEYER r gritted her teeth to secure the day’s victory by 4 seconds.

Women Final Results – 1. ZSANNETT BRAGMEYER (HUN), 2. BETH POTTER (GBR) +0:04, 3. GEORGIA TAYLOR-BROWN (GBR) +0:36

Final Championship Standings – 1. BETH POTTER (GBR) – 713 points, 2. ZSANNETT BRAGMEYER (HUN) – 645 points, 3. GEORGIA TAYLOR-BROWN (GBR) – 626 points

IS LONG JUMP THE HARDEST TRACK AND FIELD EVENT?  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Nine-time Olympic and eight-time world champion CARL LEWIS sparks debate on social media. Is the long jump the hardest track and field event?

That’s the question that nine-time Olympic and eight-time world champion CARL LEWIS asked on Twitter, off the back the incredible stat that LEWIS and 21-year-old US prodigy MATTHEW BOLING are the only two athletes in history to go sub-10 over 100m, sub-20 over 200m and to have cleared (8.00m) in the long jump. “What is it going to take for everyone to understand the incredible skill to takes to long jump far,” LEWIS said. “You are in the air one second. Think about all of the motions in the air in that time. “You must hit an eight-inch board with all of the conditions considered. You must leave the board at a certain angle within a few degrees. Your body angle must be correct to get maximum velocity. “All while running your fastest. Until you understand how to do it, you will not understand how difficult it is. Oh and by the way, speed has nothing to do with jumping far without all of these factors. So let’s put the idea that the sprinters can do it to bed. MIKE POWELL didn’t hear it.” Few are more qualified than Lewis to understand the athleticism, dynamism and technique of the long jump. The 60-year-old American won four Olympic golds (LA 1984, Seoul 1988, Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996) and two world golds (Helsinki 1983 and Rome 1987) in the discipline and held the world record – he broke his own one twice – from 1981 until MIKE POWELL cleared (8.95m) in 1991. It’s a world record that still stands today and no one in the last decade has got near it. The closest was current world long jump champion TAJAY GAYLE, who jumped (8.69m) to go 10th on the all-time list to win gold in Doha three years ago. The fact is, though, the top four all-time spots are still held by POWELL, BOB BEAMON, LEWIS and ROBERT EMMIYAN – who all competed in the 20th century.

It’s a similar story in the women’s field. The world record of (7.52m), held by Olympic bronze and European silver medallist GALINA CHISTYAKOVA, was set in 1988, while the second, third and fourth all-time spots – made up of JACKIE JOYNER-KERSEE, HEIKE DRECHSLER and ANISOARA CUSMIR-STANCIU – are held by athletes who were around before 2000. In that sense, LEWIS most definitely has a point. The fact that the world records of both men’s and women’s long jump have lasted for an age speaks of the volumes of the difficulty of the discipline. Yet long jump isn’t the only event in athletics to have long standing marks.

On the men’s side, the discus and hammer throw world records were both set in 1986 – a full five years before POWELL set the current unbeatable mark in the long jump – by JURGEN SCHULT and YURIY SEDYKH respectively. You have to go all the way back to 1983 for the oldest world record in women’s athletics, set by JARMILA KRATOCHVILOVA in the 800m. The caveat to that is of course taking historic world records with a pinch of salt given the 1980s was an era when drugs abuse in athletics was prevalent at an elite level, but just looking at how long world records have lasted isn’t the only measure of working out the ‘hardest track and field event’.

Take the heptathlon or decathlon for example. Is it fair to say that being the champion over seven or ten events is harder than one? Or do you have to be so technically talented in the long jump that you’d have a better chance of being an all-round athlete over a multitude of disciplines? With the long jump – unless you were part of the Diamond League final three format – you also had six attempts, unlike the field events where one mistake in a race can cost you a medal.

In terms of technicality, the pole vault is up there as one of the trickiest to master. It’s no surprise to hear that current Olympic champion and world record holder MONDO DUPLANTIS started vaulting at the age of three. Or the 800m? It’s a discipline which tests the nature of athletes’ tactical awareness as it does their proficiency for stamina and it’s so rare that athletes just dominate races. The outlier to that was in 2012 when world record-holder DAVID RUDISHA stormed to Olympic gold in what was essentially a time trial for the Kenyan, with SEBASTIAN COE calling it “the most extraordinary piece of running I have probably ever seen”. If you’re talking about bettering current world records on the track then just add the 400m hurdles to the list. At last year’s Tokyo Olympics KARSTEN WARHOLM and SYDNEY MCLAUGHLIN clocked (45.94) and (51.46) respectively and you’d be surprised if either surpassed those marks this year.

Finally, there’s the men’s shot put and women’s triple jump, events which RYAN CROUSER and YULIMAR ROJAS have taken to new heights in recent years. Between 1901 and 1991 the long jump world record improved by 17.61% but that is dwarfed by both the men’s shot put and women’s triple jump which have seen improvements from the first to current world records of 50.3% and 52.5% respectively.

It’s totally understandable why LEWIS believes the long jump is the hardest track and field event – given he won more Olympic medals in the event than anyone else – and it will be interesting to see if renowned multi-discipline specialists like FRED KERLEY or MICHAEL NORMAN attempt it in the future. Yet this is a debate which will just go on and on because there’s no one single measurement and everyone will have a different answer to such a subjective question. The hardest to win a medal in? The hardest to reach a world class level in? The hardest to train for? Maybe there’s some kind of highly intelligent athletics calculator out there which can give us a definitive answer.

Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers Weekly Newsletter Thursday 5 May 2022

Happy Birthday from this Thursday 5 May to Alvaro Arroyo, Daniel Arroyo, Jane Dixon, Linda Elmore, Seyd Taha Ghafari, Emily Hathaway, Alex Kramer, Tyriq Lafeulle, Scott Lincoln, Jason Nicholson, Trinity O’Connor, Naomi Palmer, Yasmin Palmer, Jenny Poll, Anne Ridley, Freya Stapleton and Larissa Wilson

NEELAM KADERBHOY – 21 SEPTEMBER 1969 – 2 MAY 2022 – It is with great regret that I have to advise you of the death of NEELAM KADERBHOY at the age of 52, after a long illness. Photograph of NEELAM after she was presented with the SBH 2020 Volunteer of the Year Award in December 2020.

NEELAM joined SBH on 23 March 1983 at the age of 13. She competed on a regular basis for the Club. Following her retirement from running she became a coach and a team manager as well as a member of the SBH Council. A very popular member who will be sorely missed by her fellow athletes, her fellow coaches and the many young athletes she coached over the years.

GEOFF MORPHITIS has spoken to ANNA HIGSON, who, like a lot of you, was very close to NEELAM. She has agreed to act as the conduit between the Club and the KADERBHOY family.
She will find out the most appropriate address to which condolence cards should be sent and advise us accordingly. If you have any questions etc please contact her at higsonanna@hotmail.com or modile 07966 785022.

NEELAM’S funeral takes place this Friday 6 May, details below, all are welcome.

We have received so many messages from her many friends at Shaftesbury, ANNA sent me this message – Thanks everyone for your messages; it is so great to read your memories and thoughts about NEELAM. I have also known her since the late 1990s as we both trained at Barnet Copthall (as it was) and we became close again when my daughters joined Shaftesbury a few years ago.

Over the past two years, we formed a WhatsApp group with JACQUI AGYEPONG, SHARON MURPHY, STEPH PAPARIZOS (all Shaftesbury teammates from the 90s) and some of the mums from the group NEELAM used to coach. The main purpose of ‘TEAM NEELAM‘ was to give her hope and friendship in her difficult situation. She was lonely and had to face her situation with little in-person support due to the Covid restrictions. We know that our daily chats and messages helped raise her spirits and loved chatting to her.

Consequently, we chatted every day and used to have weekly Zoom calls with NEELAM until she found this too difficult. Here’s a photo of her last birthday in September – we had a SBH cake made and delivered to her care home and we each had our own cupcake so we could

On a personal note, I have known NEELAM when she was 19, and her love for training and competing was second to none. From the middle of the 1990s to the early 2000s, NEELAM, DEREK SURREY and myself, took part in 5 running challenges at Club La Santa in Lanzarote. This involved 4 races in 4 days – 10K road race, 8K across rocky tracks and up and along an extinct volcano, 5K sandy beach race and lastly 15K race across the island. NEELAM grit enabled her to finish the challenge just outside the top 5. One thing you may or may not be aware of but NEELAM played an excellent game of Pool.

Rest in Peace NEELAM

COMMONWEALTH GAMES MEDALS REVEALED  Photographs of the medals and how they were developed.

ONE SUMMER, THREE CHAMPIONSHIPS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph of DINA ASHER-SMITH by MARK SHEARMAN

After a delay due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the World Athletics Championships take place from July 15-24. Oregon in the USA will be hosting the event. For British athletes the delay has created a situation where 2022 is going to be their busiest year ever. It’s not just a case of competing in the 2022 World Athletics Championships, far from it. There’s also the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England from July 28-August 8. Just a week after that the European Championships take place in Munich, Germany from August 15-21.

Just how will athletes handle such a schedule as this? Can they compete in all three or will they opt to take part in just two of them?  Before the World Championship, athletes have a busy schedule of Diamond League meetings. Those can be very lucrative financially so aren’t just an opportunity to warm up for the Worlds. There will be two British athletes defending world titles in Oregon. KATARINA JOHNSON-THOMPSON won the heptathlon title in Doha three years ago. The other British gold medal success came from DINA ASHER-SMITH, who won the 200m title. That followed up the 100m silver medal that she’d already won. Sometimes in sport, injuries happen at just the worst possible time. That was the case for ASHER-SMITH when suffering a hamstring injury at the Tokyo Olympics. A relay bronze was won but that was way short of her expectations going into the championships. Back fully fit, what can we expect from her in Oregon in July? The pressure will be on the Orpington athlete. One world title to defend and the hope will be that May and June will see her put in some impressive performances during the Diamond League. If she is to peak this season, then surely it must be in Oregon.

Then will come the decision whether to compete at the Commonwealth Games. Any English athlete will want to be able to compete in their home games. That’s even more the case when there’s an excellent chance of winning a medal. With the European Championships just around the corner, it will be interesting to see how many British athletes opt to take part in the Commonwealth Games. Those who don’t fare too well in Oregon may well decide to take part in the other two games. If having a great World Championships though, perhaps just one of the two will be competed at. Whatever happens, it’s going to be a hectic period for the sport of athletics. The schedule is most likely a one-off though. It’s just a relief that we did manage to get the Tokyo Olympics completed last year, rather than those being moved to 2022 as well!
