FASTEST AND SLOWEST PARKRUNS 2023  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Pegwell Bay is now believed to be the fastest parkrun course in the UK with Great Yarmouth North Beach being the toughest. Pegwell Bay in Kent has been declared the fastest parkrun by statistician and runner TIM GROSE with events in Bromley, Poole and Hull hot on its heels. GROSE is the brains behind the Power of 10 website and he has used a slightly different method to rank the estimated 760 current parkruns in Britain.

The former No.1 at Victoria Dock in London has now dropped down to 44th in GROS’SE new list, whereas there is some mild controversy over the new No.1 Pegwell Bay as there are suspicions that it is not quite 5km in distance. However, organisers state on their website: “The course is 5000m long and has been accurately measured by us with a professional measuring wheel. It consists of a two laps of the Pegwell Bay Country Park consisting of gravel trail for the entire route. “Along the route runners will benefit from the most amazing coastal views across Pegwell Bay towards Ramsgate, in addition to views along the nature reserve and intertidal mud flats that year on year attracts many wildlife enthusiasts due to its national and international waders and wildfowl.” Pegwell Bay’s course records are held by CHRIS OLLEY with (14:17) and BOBBY CLAY with (16:14) but GROSE uses a ‘standard scratch score’ to calculate his rankings which uses the times of all particpants.

Fastest parkruns in the UK (as of April 2023) 1 Pegwell Bay Country Park; 2 Bromley; 3 Poole; 4 Hull; 5 MUSA Cookstown, N.Ireland; 6 Belfast Victoria; 7 Worthing; 8 Harwich; 9 Widnes; 10 King’s Lynn; 11 Hastings; 12 Walsall Arboretum; 13 Long Eaton; 14 Victory; 15 Market Rasen Racecourse; 16 Stretford; 17 Southend; 18 Storeys Field; 19 Swansea Bay; 20 Perth. Notable courses further down on the list are Dulwich in south London which is now 23rd, Cardiff is now 39th, the Eden Project event in Cornwall was previously No.5 on the list but is now 92nd and the original parkrun venue of Bushy Park in London is 115th. The 2022 parkrun ‘fastest and slowest’ rankings are here.

Toughest or slowest parkruns (as of April 2023) 1 Great Yarmouth North Beach; 2 Whinlatter Forest, Cumbria; 3 Woolacoombe Dunes, Devon; 4 Durlston Country Park, Dorset; 5 Mount Edgcumbe, Cornwall. The leading ‘toughest’ courses are largely unchanged from GROSE’S previous rankings. Great Yarmouth North Beach is largely flat but is held on loose sand and is possibly the only parkrun that doesn’t have a course record of inside 20 minutes.

WAS THE 2023 LONDON MARATHON THE MOST DRAMATIC IN HISTORY  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

With so many incidents and storylines it is hard to remember a more action-packed weekend since the event began in 1981. Feared disruption from environmental protestors did not materialise at this year’s TCS London Marathon but the event still produced more than enough drama. Perhaps more than on any occasion in its long history. As the dust settles on the British capital, here are nine storylines from the 2023 race.

HASSAN the drama queen Surely there has never been an elite women’s race so packed with excitement? Dropped from the lead group and finding herself around half a minute behind the leaders, SIFAN HUSSAN stopped to stretch before mounting an incredible comeback. With 2km to go she almost collided with a motorbike after suddenly veering across the road to grab a drink. Soon afterwards she won a three-way sprint down The Mall to claim victory on her debut. It was brilliant, breathless stuff.

An unpopular theory HASSAN’S (2:18:33) was one of the slowest winning times in recent years. If BRIGID KOSGEI had rolled up in her (2:14) shape, or PERES JEPCHIRCHIR, ALMAZ AYANA or YALAMZERF YEHUALAW in their previous (2:17) form, would the Dutch athlete have been able to get back into contention? PAULA RADCLIFFE from 20 years earlier would have been almost an entire kilometre further up the road, for example. On Sunday the leaders were on schedule to run (2:17) for much of the race as well but slowed, unwittingly allowing HASSAN to catch them. Still, the Olympic 5000m and 10,000m champion could only beat the best on the day – and, who knows, she may have run even harder and faster if she’d needed to!

Off-road controversies Away from the races themselves there was intrigue and controversy behind the scenes relating to commercial aspects alone. EILISH MCCOLGAN’S much-publicised sponsorship dispute aside, the men’s winner KELVIN KIPTUM appears to have got mixed up in an even bigger row with the Kenyan racing in Nike despite reportedly having a deal with Chinese brand Qiaodan. Then there was the strange case of KOSGEI, who dropped out only three minutes, sparking theories that she only started to fulfil some of her race fee requirements.

Kawauchi’s crazy racing calendar The Japanese runner YUKI KAWAUCHI has earned a reputation for being a prolific racer. He often runs a marathon roughly once every month but in 2018 sprang to fame by winning the Boston Marathon men’s title. In London on Sunday he was the fastest non-elite competitor with (2:13:18). Impressively he has already run three marathons already in 2023, too, with victories at the Ishigakijima (2:18:05) and Saga Sakura (2:11:32) events and 12th place at the Osaka Marathon (2:07:35).

Innes FitzBrilliant INNES FITZGERALD is undoubtedly the most exciting young distance runner in Britain right now. Just 17, she has swept all before her in recent months with victories in the English Schools, English National and Inter-Counties cross-country championships before successfully defending her Mini London Marathon under-17 crown. She is also one of the most interesting athletes in the country, too. Her environmental principles are well known after she chose to skip a trip to the World Cross Country Championships in Australia this year due to aircraft emissions. But on Sunday the West Country athlete headed from the Mini Marathon to “the big one” protest in central London where she was part of the Champions for Earth group at the demonstration.

Mini marvels Last year the Mini London Marathon was moved from Sunday to Saturday to give it its own slot in the spotlight rather than being a buried and potentially over-looked on the ‘main marathon’ day. It has proved a good move and is the only realistic way that organisers can also grow the event from its current 7000 participants to an ambitious target of 50,000. Next year they should consider expanding the post-race presentation area, though. Currently the ceremony unfolds fairly quietly in an enclosed area close to the finish line and features only the championship and London Boroughs race winners, with stars like ELIUD KIPCHOGE and JAKE WIGHTMAN presenting prizes. AW hears that a few silver and bronze medallists have felt a little left out, though, after being handed a voucher as their reward and then told they are free to leave.

Relentless rise of super shoes (and CGMs) If you felt self-conscious as a club runner wearing super shoes three or four years ago, the scenario has flipped on its head. It is increasingly hard to spot any of the quicker or more committed runners wearing ‘traditional shoes’. Indeed, even in the Mini Marathon the majority of kids are wearing fast footwear these days. While it’s unlikely this will catch on in quite the same way, another trend seems to be the use of continuous glucose monitors (or CGMs) with runners like SIFAN HUSSEIN sporting a sensor on her upper left arm. These help runners plot their pre and mid-race fuelling strategies and are becoming all the rage with runners like ELIUD KIPCHOGE and EILISH MCCOLGAN also using them. Look out for a review on them in the May issue of AW magazine.

Kudos to FARAH Amid all the medals and the media coverage, it’s easy to forget that MO FARAH is a tough little character who never shies away from a scrap. He’s threatened to get involved in charity boxing in the past and of course his gritty nature has helped him endure countless gruelling training sessions and races. Running long distances, after all, is a pain game. We were reminded of this on Sunday when despite an underwhelming 10km warm-up race in Gabon a fortnight earlier he started the race in determined fashion and, rising to the occasion, was still leading EMILE CAIRESS as the No.1 Brit at halfway. Following this Father Time caught up with him and the 40-year-old faded to third Brit as PHIL SESEMANN out-kicked him in the final metres. He resisted the temptation to drop out, though, and his 2:10:28 smashed ANDY DAVIES British M40 record by almost four minutes as he went down fighting.

THOMMO tears up Finally, my moment of the weekend goes to another British veteran runner, CHRIS THOMSON, who unexpectedly choked up during this post-race chat below on Sunday. THOMMO, 42, wears his heart on his sleeve and, while he might not be the fastest British marathon man these days, he is still running impressive times and remains the undisputed and undefeated champion of media interviews.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

GEORGE HARRISON MBE MEMORIAL DOCUMENT – Many thanks to EUAN MACKENZIE for these excellent words and photograph of GEORGE. Which is of the St Albans school team taken at the 2008 King Henry V111 races.

I first heard about GEORGE from TONY SMITH after a school cross country race that I won aged 12. TONY approached me after the race and asked where I was going to secondary school, St Albans School I replied, to which TONY laughed, and told me I was in very safe hands with GEORGE. Little did I know how big an impact GEORGE would have on my life and so many other runners.
He would train anyone, no matter your background, ability or attitude, everyone was welcome to train with GEORGE. Moreover, he wouldn’t treat anyone differently at training, if you were a GB athlete or a 12 year old, you warranted as much attention from GEORGE.
He had a legendary feel about him, everyone had many different stories. For me I think his Christmas cards were the most special. Everyone of his athletes, no matter their ability, received one with GEORGE’S predictions of your season, races, positions and times down to seconds.

STACEY GONZALES BETANCOURTSTACEY recently took part in the World Masters Indoor Championships in Torun, Poland on 27 March – 3 April.
Pole Vault – Competing in the W45 Pole Vault STACEY won the Silver Medal with a personal best (3.00m) equalling her 2022 height, and is ranked UK No.1 V45 in 2023
The photograph shows her on the podium with her Silver Medal

BOSTON MARATHON –  LESLIE ODAMTTEN-ADDY competed in the 127th Boston marathon this past Monday, in a time of (3:24.44).

LESLIE sent me these words – I have just landed back at Heathrow where I will stay in London before heading back to Germany next week with work. Was an overall great experience to be part of. Undulating course with some prominent hills thrown in for good measure! Plus lots of rain 🙂 Happy to have finished; despite the leg cramps from navigating the hills. I only started doing tempo long runs in March as I was rehabbing an injury for 4 months after the Berlin Marathon this last September. My longest initial runs in January being just 5k…so I am overall pleased.

Wished I had entered for the London marathon coming up this weekend. I think I can get close to 3 hours on a flatter course plus the strength I have now built up! Photograph of LESLIE after the race.

SOAR CLUB VESTSNICOLA PAYNE sent me the following request.
I have been talking to Soar, a local (Highgate) performance led running brand about their technical club vests. Lots of you will know them. They do very high quality kit made in Italy and have supplied local clubs (Heathside, Highgate Harriers etc) with premium race vests. Feels amazing, like wearing a cobweb! No chaffe, no seams, absolutely gorgeous etc. See here; https://www.soarrunning.com/collections/club/products/enquiry-elite-race-vest-3-1

The vests are £65 and they will only make them in bespoke SBH design if 15 people from the club commit to it. I have XS to XL samples if people want to try on for size and assess the garment.
I appreciate this is not everyone’s cuppa but if you race a lot, appreciate comfort and are happy to invest in them I think these are beautiful and technical bits of kit that work well for athletes.
Email me on nickypayne91@gmail.com if you are interested and would like to see/place an order.
There is a hard deadline of 24/04 to hit the next production run for vests delivered in the summer. If we miss this deadline the vests won’t be available to us until October.

SAFETY PINS AND COMPETITION BIBS IN A RACE TO SURVIVE  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Is athletics stuck in the dark ages by asking athletes to attach paper bibs on their singlets? Do today’s leading athletes still need to wear their name or number on a paper bib on their competition clothing? The debate emerged on social media this month and seems to divide opinion. Athletes such as NOAH LYLES, RAI BENJAMIN and JAZMIN SAWYERS got involved with the latter saying: “Pins just feel needlessly fiddly and bad aerodynamics!”

A short poll on our Instagram channel showed that 49% are in favour of wearing numbers with 51% feeling it is unnecessary. I didn’t vote but, if I had, I would probably have tipped the results so that they would have ended up 50/50. Putting your number on to your singlet is a pre-race ritual I wouldn’t like to see disappear. Yes, we’ve been doing it for a long time and it might feel dated but why change a winning formula? In some ways it’s been around longer than you can imagine too. Much of the debate centres around the use of the humble safety pin, but did you know this small metal device was created long before the first ancient Olympics in 776BC was created and dates back to unknown Bronze Age inventors in Greece.

In AW we even ran a feature in our magazine on the use of safety pins in 2011 and wrote: “The basic design is brilliantly simple – a straight pin looped in the middle to form a spring with one end bent into a hook to hold the other sharp end, with tension from the spring holding it safe and secure.” As for the paper numbers themselves, they’re important for sponsors’ logos and spectators (as you see in the main image above, AW has even featured on them in the past), plus of course runners will often be asked to write medical details and emergency contact details on the back.

Of course there have been improvements over the years. For a long time athletes only wore numbers on their singlets, which meant you could only identify them if you had a list of competitors to refer to. But gradually over the past 20 years we have seen numbers replaced by the athlete’s name. This month, for example, saw the 20th anniversary of PAULA RADCLIFFE’S amazing 2:15:25 marathon in London and the images from 2003 remind us that she wore “101” on her singlet. Checking back at photos from that period, I see some (but not all) of the top athletes had their name on their singlet in 2004, whereas by 2005 it was even more widespread. Paper bibs are a big part of the sport’s history. If you’re in any doubt of this then pay a visit to the Museum of World Athletics and you’ll see find paper bibs in abundance alongside spikes and shoes and other track and field paraphernalia. As a teenage runner in the 1980s I was fascinated by leading runners like ROB DE CASTELLA cutting their number to the bare minimum and inserting holes in it to enhance the breathability before tackling major marathons in hot weather such as the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.

In 1985 STEVE CRAM and SAID AOUITA broke the (3:30) barrier for 1500m in an epic race in Nice, but one of the enduring memories is CRAM starting his long run for home with his number on his back flapping around loosely like a tail. One type of paper number I’m not a fan of are the ones that organisers insist on sticking to the side of athletes’ legs. Much of the time they simply fall off. As for the main name or number on the athlete’s chest, though, I’m firmly in favour of its survival.

GEORGE HARRISON MBE MEMORIAL DOCUMENT – Many thanks to SHAUN CLIFFORD for this outstanding photograph of GEORGE. SHAUN recalls his children, HARRIET and JOSH CLIFFORD ran for SBH between 2008 – 2015 and trained with GEORGE in St Albans.
The photograph makes me smile as I distinctly remember GEORGE saying “I never cancel training when it’s snowing.  The only thing that would stop the session would be mist”.  I’m sure many other SBH athletes could testify to this.

ELLIE BAKER ON HER MIDDLE-DISTANCES AMBITIONS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph taken by MARK SHEARMAN.

The British indoor 1500m champion on a different mindset that has brought big changes. “I was standing on the start line knowing that I hadn’t worked to the best of my ability to be in the best shape at that time and I never wanted that feeling again,” says ELLIE BAKER, recalling the moment her mindset shifted. It was 2020, and the 24-year-old admits she hadn’t dealt well with lockdown. “I’m very much motivated by competition and if I don’t have any goals to aim for, then I’m like, ‘What am I training for? What is this all towards?’” she says. “I think I got a little bit lazy because I didn’t really know what was going on and I just let a few things go. I got so unfit over that period of time and I missed an opportunity because there were races, and I was quite annoyed at myself for not keeping on it. “It was a blessing in disguise really, because I feel like I had to go through that to make a decision. I was always there or thereabouts, but I wanted to make that next break. I was fed up with coming second or just missing out.”

BAKER sat down with her brother at the end of that season and told him she wanted to make her mark. They agreed to create a plan to ensure she was on top of everything and that no stone would be left unturned. Their first aim was to get selected for the 2021 European Indoor Championships, where she finished fourth in the 800m. “It was a massive mindset change more than anything,” says the Shaftesbury Barnet athlete. “Since that day I’ve given absolutely everything.” Weekly accountability meetings kept BAKER in check and her times got quicker. In 2021 she made a breakthrough, going sub-two minutes for the first time over 800m (1:59.54) and taking over eight seconds off her 1500m best (4:06.54). In 2022 she went even faster, running (1:59.52) and (4:04.90). In addition, she finished eighth in the final of the European Championships 1500m and reached the semi-finals of the World Athletics Championships over 800m. That she performed so well in 2022 is credit to her hard work after an injury put paid to the previous winter’s training. This winter has been uninterrupted and everything clicked with 1500m gold at the UK Athletics Indoor Championships in a championship record (4:06.73). Her 11th place in the 1500m final at the European Indoor Championships left BAKER disappointed, but she went with the pace and believed she could win a medal.

In a memorable era for British middle-distance running, BAKER is in the fortunate position that she can turn her hand to the 800m and the 1500m. “My coach JON BIGG very much wants me to do both,” she says. “He thinks I can be a very good 1500m runner. My endurance comes quite naturally to me, but I’ve also got natural speed. “I preferred the speedier stuff growing up and I’ve done a little bit more of that, but when we’ve done longer sessions I’ve actually fared quite well. We hadn’t done many sessions to run that time (4:04.90) last summer, so he was excited by that, especially when I’d had the winter injured. “I think they go hand in hand and if you’re going to run a solid 1500m you’re going to run a solid 800m, and vice versa. With the middle distance being so stacked in Britain at the minute, if you can give yourself as much opportunity as possible, then that’s a smart move.”

Two years on from her first accountability meeting, BAKER has no regrets. “I’ve had to stay resilient and do it my way,” she says of her career to date. “Lockdown gave me the kick I needed. Now I will always be able to stand on the start line and know that I’ve put everything into it and whatever happens, happens, because I’ve got confidence in the work I’ve put in.”

BETH POTTER WINS LONDON ARENA GAMES  The final race in the Triathlon Super League Arena Games took place at the London Aquatic Centre on the 8 April. The event consists of three stages, which include a 200m Swim, 4km Bike (Indoors) and 1km on a Treadmill.

As BETH did not compete in the two earlier rounds, she was not able to defend her 2022 world title.
The race was in three Stages, Stage 1 was a was a swim, bike, run which had BETH finishing 1st, 10 seconds ahead of CASSANDRE BEAUGRAND of France. Stage 2 was a run, bike swim which had BETH finishing 1st with a 7 second lead ahead of CASSANDRE BEAUGRAND. Stage 3 was back to the swim, bike, in which BETH dominated this stage and ended up winning the event by 22 seconds ahead of CASSANDRE BEAUGRAND with SOPHIE LINN of Australia in 3rd place. Which meant SOPHIE LINN had won the 2023 world title, with BETH was in 5th place.

ELIUD KIPCHOGE LOOKS TO ADD BOSTON VICTORY TO INCREDIBLE RUNNING RESUME  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Olympic champion and world record-holder takes on defending champion EVANS CHEBET on April 17 while world champion GOTYTOM GEBRESLASE heads strong women’s field. It is almost 10 years to the day since ELIUD KIPCHOGE won his debut marathon in Hamburg in (2:05:30). Since then he has won in Berlin and London four times, claimed two Olympic titles, improved the world record to (2:01:09) and dipped inside the “impossible” two-hour barrier in Vienna. Yet he has never contested the Boston Marathon and aims to add victory there to his great list of accomplishments next Monday (April 17). Aged 38, he is still going strong and indeed his last venture over 26.2 miles saw him set the current world record in Berlin last September. During his amazing career he has also enjoyed marathon victories in Tokyo and Chicago which means that the only races on the World Marathon Majors series that he has not won are Boston and New York City. Boston has immense history with the 2023 race being the 127th edition. It also has a notoriously tough course with rolling inclines as the runners enter the latter stages including the infamous Heartbreak Hill. KIPCHOGE’S rivals include fellow Kenyan EVANS CHEBET, who won last year’s Boston Marathon in (2:06:51) before taking victory in New York City in November. The 34-year-old has also run (2:03:00) when winning in Valencia in 2020.

There is also the 2021 Boston and 2022 Chicago winner BENSON KIPRUTO of Kenya and two-time winner ELISA DESISA of Ethiopia, who triumphed in Boston in 2013 and 2015 and also finished runner-up in 2016 and 2019. Behind KIPCHOGE and CHEBET, the fastest man in the line-up is Tanzanian record-holder GABRIEL GEAY, who finished runner-up at the Valencia Marathon in December in (2:03:00). Added to this are 2021 New York winner ALBERT KORIR of Kenya, 2015 world champion GHIRMAY GHEBRESLASSIE of Eritrea, 2020 London winner SHURA KITATA of Ethiopia and Ethiopia’s HERPASA NEGASA, a (2:03:40) man. Last year’s seventh-place finisher and top American, SCOTT FAUBLE, returns for his fourth Boston Marathon and will be joined by world 50km record-breaker CJ ALBERTSON. After a (2:08:16) marathon debut in Chicago last year, CONNER MANTZ will take on the Boston course for the first time.

GOTYTOM GEBRESLASE leads the women’s line-up that includes several former winners too. The 28-year-old from Ethiopia won the Berlin Marathon in 2021 and then took the world title in Eugene last year in a championship record of (2:18:11). In the New York City Marathon in November she placed third behind SHARON LOKEDI of Kenya and LONAH SALPETER of Israel but is hoping to return to winning ways in Boston. LOKEDI was due to run in Boston but has recently withdrawn, but SALPETER is still set to race and the 34-year-old ran (2:17:45) to win in Tokyo in 2020 and earned bronze at the World Championships last year. All eyes in Boston will also be on AMANE BERISO as the Ethiopian improved her best by six minutes to clock (2:14:58) to win the Valencia Marathon in December. It was the third quickest time in history and the 31-year-old felt she could have threatened BRIGID KOSGEI’S world record of (2:14:04) if the pacemakers had helped her in the latter stages instead of staying with the struggling LETESENBET GIDEY. HELLEN OBIRI is another star attraction in Boston. The 2019 world cross-country and two-time world 5000m champion from Kenya was not planning to run another marathon so soon after her slightly painful sixth place at New York City in November but after winning the NYC Half in style last month she has recently decided to run Boston. Also in the line-up are former Boston winners DES LINDEN of the United States, who overcame dreadful weather conditions to win the 2018 event, together with 2017 winner EDNA KIPLAGAT of Kenya and 2016 champion ATESEDE BAYSA of Ethiopia. Adding to the quality are last year’s second and third place finishers in Boston, ABABEL YESHANEH of Ethiopia and MARY NGUGI of Kenya. YESHANEH came within four seconds of victory in 2022, while NGUGI has placed second and third in Boston. Also returning is JOYCILINE JEPKOSGEI, a past winner of the New York City and London marathons, while Ethiopia’s HIWOT GEBREMARYAM, runner-up in Berlin in 2021, is another Boston debutante. Leading the US challenge in the women’s race are SARA HALL, ALOPHINE TULIAMUK, EMMA BATES and NELL ROJAS.

In the wheelchair races American DANIEL ROMANCHUK defends his men’s title but faces, among others, Swiss ‘silver bullet’ MARCEL HUG. The women’s race sees four-time Boston champion MANUELA SCHAR of Switzerland. SCHAR taking on World Marathon Majors Series champion SUSANNAH SCARONI of the United States, Paralympic gold medallist MADISON DE ROZARIO of Australia and five-time Boston winner TATYANA MCFADDEN of the United States.

For viewers in the UK the event is due to be broadcast on Eurosport 2 from 3.30pm on April 17.

ASICS TO OPEN NEW HIGH ALTITUDE CAMP IN FONT-ROMEU  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

EILISH MCCOLGAN and MO KATIR will be just two of many athletes who will benefit from the new Chojo Camp Europe. ASICS is launching their first ever European pro-athlete training centre in Font-Romeu, France. The camp, managed by DAVE KLINK, will host around 20 ASICS athletes – short and long-distance runners – at a time, offering access to a brand-new athletics track, a hypoxia chamber, a weight and fitness room alongside a recovery pool. During their stay at one of the brand’s chalets, a team of physios, psychologists and doctors will be available to provide the physical and mental care that the athletes need to feel and train at their best. Prominent athletes such as EILISH MCCOLGAN, MO KATIR and SARAH LAHTI are already preparing to set up base in Font-Romeu for an extended period as they train for the upcoming challenges at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest (August 19-27). Further athletes will join on a shorter stay basis from now all the way to the immediate preparation for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

OLIVIER MIGNON, Director of Sports Marketing, ASICS EMEA says: “We are excited to be opening the Chojo Camp Europe today. The physical and mental well-being of our athletes has always been important to ASICS. We’ve been able to support them with products, physical care such as physios, mental-health services and now with their own space to prepare for competitions. The camp is a fantastic opportunity for our athletes to come together and train under the best conditions. Looking ahead to the World Championships in Budapest this year and Paris next year, we’re confident this will help our athletes prepare to be at their top level.” MCCOLGAN, who recently took 43 seconds off her British half-marathon record at the Berlin Half and is a familiar face to Font-Romeu, adds: “It’s great to have ASICS support its athletes with these facilities. I’ve always been a fan of altitude training, and being able to have a base in Europe, close to where I’ll be racing over the summer, is fantastic. “It’s not something all athletes have the funding to do, but with ASICS opening the Chojo Camp many who wouldn’t normally, can now train at altitude and experience the benefits. I’m looking forward to getting in my sessions on the track, whilst also getting to mingle with fellow ASICS athletes.”

The term ’Chojo’ has a long history at ASICS. It was used frequently by the founder, KIHACHIRO ONITSUKA, when referring to new projects. The word translates from Japanese to ‘striving for the peak’. Alongside the European facility, ASICS has also established a training camp in Iten, Kenya, to support the development of new athletes.
