RESULTS
Just to clarify, that the results I publish can be different to those that are shown on the Power of 10. The differences relate to seasons and personal best performances. For example in the recent EYAL results, an athlete in the 200m ran (24.1), and on his profile his season’s best was shown as (23.88) indoors. As the 200m indoors and outdoors are totally different type of events, I had shown the (24.1) as a season’s best. Regarding Master athletes any personal best performances relate to their current age-groups, as Club Records for Masters age-groups are in 5 year periods.

NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS – Took place at Parliament Hill on 22 February.
Parliament Hill is regarded as the spiritual home of English cross-country running and the history of the English ‘National’ dates back to 1876. World Athletics recognised this a few years ago by awarding the venue one of its coveted Heritage plaques and the 10 races on Saturday were preceded by a celebration of the achievement with long-time English Cross Country Association secretary IAN BYETT and current secretary EAMONN MARTIN among those in attendance.

MICHAEL JOHNSON: “THE ATHLETES ARE AMAZING BUT THEY NEED A PLATFORM”  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

As the inaugural staging of Grand Slam Track approaches, MICHAEL JOHNSON talks about why he thinks it can bring about the kind of change that athletics needs to be able to grow. The national stadium in Kingston holds some significant memories for MICHAEL JOHNSON. It was during his time at Baylor College that the man who would go on to become a multiple Olympic and world champion sprinter got his first taste of Jamaica. Travelling to race at the renowned venue was, in fact, the first time he’d ever left America.  “I ran down there twice in college [in relay events], in 1989 and 1990,” he recalls. “It was eye-opening. I’d never seen that level of young talent.” It’s the famous ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Championships or “Champs” that packs this particular arena to the rafters on an annual basis but, just five days after this year’s edition takes place, JOHNSON’S latest vision for the sport will start to become a reality on the very same track that will have played host to the Caribbean’s rising stars. There will be some rather more established names on show for the first of the four meetings – others will follow in Miami, Philadelphia and then LA – that form the inaugural staging of Grand Slam Track, the project being driven by the former 200m and 400m world record-holder which is promising to bring change to the sport.

In case you haven’t been following the story, Grand Slam Track is planning to do things a bit differently. Here’s the concept. A total of 48 athletes, or “Racers”, have already been signed up and are contracted to compete in one of six event groups in each of the four “Slams”. At each Slam, every Racer will have to take part in two different disciplines – for example, US star SYDNEY MCLAUGHLIN-LEVRONE will race over the 400m hurdles and the 400m flat, while her fellow American COLE HOCKER will take on not just his more familiar 1500m distance but also the 800m.

On top of that, those 48 Racers will come up against 48 “Challengers”, whose identities will be different from Slam to Slam, with the first prize for coming out on top being $100,000. It’s all designed to create a professional, and more lucrative, league that sits at the top of the sport, places the focus on rivalries rather than times and draws more attention. The biggest challenge, according to JOHNSON: “Was always going to be getting athletes to commit to competing against their primary rivals four times.” With those 48 Racers secured – including Olympic and world champions (36 of them won medals in Paris last summer) – that box has been very much ticked. After all the planning, now “execution mode” has been engaged as the spring approaches. It hasn’t all been plain sailing to reach this point, mind you. “You’re giving the athletes what they’ve always wanted, but you’re also asking them to change and so you expect that that’s going to be a little bit challenging for people,” says JOHNSON. “You’re going to always have some resistance but, by and large, the athletes are down with it.”

Would he have felt that way during his own competitive days if he had been approached to take part? “It would not have been difficult at all for me,” he adds. “I wanted this. I always understood how other professional sports work because, when I was competing as a sprinter, my best friends were NFL players and I saw how their sport worked versus my sport. I’ve always been a big Formula One fan and I saw how that sport worked versus our sport. I would have understood the trade-off. “And then I loved competing in the big championships. If you gave me an opportunity to compete against the best, that’s what I wanted to do. All of my records came when there were high stakes and I ran my best when I was competing against the best, so that’s what I wanted. For most of these athletes, I think that’s what they want as well. “That’s one of the things they cite – ‘I want the races to mean something. I want to compete against my rivals and that’s what’s going to bring out the best in me’.” Much has been written and spoken about Grand Slam Track before a single step has even been run and it could be argued that it’s already making an impact. Has it been a coincidence, for example, that the Diamond League prize pot for the year ahead has recently increased?

Those sums still pale in comparison to the earning power of some other sports, though, so how does JOHNSON see athletics being able to keep up when the choices available to the watching – and participating public – continue to grow? “At the grassroots level, certainly here in the US, there are significant participation numbers,” he says. “It’s the number one participation sport for girls in the US, and I think it’s number two for boys behind American football so that’s definitely a strength. We also have a very good college system. “Our biggest problem has always been that the sport has never had an actual league that sits at the top. So we would compare track to the NBA or the NFL or European league football – but that’s not the comparison. The comparison should be European league football, NFL, NBA, Formula One. Those are all leagues. We don’t have a league. We just call our sport the sport. We need a league that is exclusive for the best of the best athletes.” He adds: “Nobody talks about combat sports as the thing. It’s UFC. That’s the leader. We have never had that in athletics. We have the Olympics, which is not ours. It doesn’t belong to us as a sport. We have our World Championships, but it is not an exclusive league that takes place every year that is for the best of the best athletes. “That was one of the things that, when I first started this, I felt like the sport needed in order for it to continue to thrive. Grand Slam Track is that league.”

It was towards the end of last year that JOHNSON claimed: “I think I can save track”. He has the utmost confidence in the athletes being able to deliver their part of the bargain and excel. His job, he says, is to provide the means for those stories to be told on a grand scale, and to an audience that wants to keep coming back for more. The Paris Olympics and the performances that took place there were just about the perfect advert for athletics, so how much potential does the 57-year-old think the sport has? “We talk about that all the time and I think the issue is, because of the lack of anything else, we have been looking for years now for the next generational talent that’s going to help draw more attention back to the sport. I think that’s the wrong way to think about it because, if you think about it, at every Olympics the athletes are amazing. It’s not the lack of talent. “We keep looking to the athletes to help grow the sport, to get the sport over the top or ‘save’ the sport but there hasn’t been a single Olympic Games or World Championships over the last several years that wasn’t like: ‘Damn, this is amazing’.

“So it’s not the athletes. It is the lack of a structure to take those athletes and put them in a product that you can deliver to fans, that gets them excited every year, multiple times a year, with high stakes and a platform that showcases these personalities. “From my perspective, the talent has always been there, but this is the greatest collection of dynamic personalities I’ve seen in the sport in quite some time, and they’re doing an amazing job themselves of connecting with their fans, putting themselves out there, bringing the fans into their world, training, the struggles and all of the drama that it takes to be a professional track athlete. But what they’re lacking is a platform that boosts that and that’s what we’re trying to be as Grand Slam Track.” The level of ambition and aspiration is extremely high, but that doesn’t mean that all forms of realism have been parked at the door. JOHNSON isn’t about to claim all of athletics’ ills will have been cured by the end of June and his idea of what success would like come the end of year one is not only different from what you might expect, but also indicative of the fact that he and the investors who have put up $30 million are in this for the long run.

“The fact that we have signed these 48 Racers, now putting them on the track and letting them race… that’ll be a success,” he says. “What we want is to then put out a good product that is entertaining and presents the sport in a way that draws fans in and engages them in a new way. “And then, of course, the metric that I’m going to be looking at constantly is growth – in the numbers of fans that are coming into the stadium and watching, growth of our television audience over the season and growth of our engagement, whether it be social media or otherwise. “This is a start-up. I’ve been involved with many start-ups and you have to be realistic about what you can expect in year one. You have to be focused on growth, and you have to be structured in a way where you can grow. That’s how we’re structured.

“This is where a lot of fans and people in the sport are concerned [about the project]. They are welcoming of Grand Slam Track, but concerned about whether it can last, so they’ll apply methodology that makes sense to them, like: ‘You’ve got to have a full stadium in year one or you’re going to fail’. You don’t have to have a full stadium in year one. You have to keep growing over time. “Or they’ll say: ‘You’ve got to have all of the athletes and if you don’t have this one athlete who is the most popular, you’re going to fail’. No, you don’t have to have that one athlete. You have to have a lot of the really good athletes. “We know what’s possible, and we know what’s realistic, so I feel good about our chances to succeed based on our goals for year one. And then we’ll quickly get ready for year two.”

Whether that second year brings with it expansion into other parts of the world – there have been discussions with a number of cities – remains to be seen. The same goes for whether or not some of the big-name athletes who have been conspicuous by their absence, such as Noah Lyles and Jakob Ingebrigtsen, can be persuaded to come on board in future. JOHNSON’S vision, however, remains clear. “It has always been, from my perspective, [about] Grand Slam Track being able to immediately make change based on what we’re doing,” he says. “We’re changing the way that athletes compete, the way that fans are able to consume the product and enjoy track at the professional level.

“It has always been my opinion that that is going to spur on other change that the sport has needed for quite some time and that World Athletics has stated multiple times that they want to see. “Given that I think we’re just getting started, I think we’ll see more change in the sport in a positive direction. Someone had to start that. I think that Grand Slam Track can be that impetus for that change and we’re certainly going to try by leading with our examples and with our league. I’m hopeful it will spur on more change.”

KOJO KYEREME RECORDS NEW WORLD INDOOR 800m RECORD – This took place at the BMC Elite Races at Lee Valley on 12 February. KOJO ran a time of (1:58.80), which takes .50 of a second off MARK WILLIAMS of the USA, who ran (1:59.30) in New York on 30 March 2024.

The following has been published on the Athletics Weekly website – Since turning 50, KOJO KYEREME has set a British 3000m record of (8:41.06) and here he targeted the M50 800m mark. An earlier try in the South of England Championships failed after too fast a start but here he paced perfectly. He was just inside 59 seconds at 400m and around 88 seconds at 600m. Using the strength that saw him run a (2:21:28) marathon, he held on to run (1:58.80) to better the world mark of (1:59.30) by American MARK WILLIAMS last year. Photograph taken by MARK HOOKWAY.

The Power of 10 publishes separate UK rankings for indoor and outdoor performances, I wil record any UK rankings from the 23 January Newsletter.

UK ATHLETICS PUBLISH SELECTION POLICY FOR 2025 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

The national governing body has “B” standards for every single event, a marked change to previous years. UK Athletics has published its selection policy for the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, with “B” [UKA] standards listed for every single event. In previous years, athletes could only qualify for major global championships if they achieved World Athletics’ entry standards in certain disciplines.

While the majority of events had “B” standards listed against them, a lot of athletes had to nail down the marks set by the global governing body. UK Athletics’ selection policy for the Paris Olympics saw six male and seven female disciplines without a “B” standard. On the men’s side, those events were the 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m and 400m hurdles. The women’s disciplines were the 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m, 3000m steeplechase and 400m hurdles.

The selection policy for the 2023 World Championships in Budapest also had six male and seven female events without a “B” standard. UK Athletics’ standards are slightly easier for athletes to obtain than World Athletics’ marks, with the global governing body setting higher standards because it wants more athletes to qualify for global major championships through its ranking system. According to UK Athletics’ selection policy for Tokyo, athletes who obtain the “B” standard must also be in a ranked position on World Athletics’ Road To Tokyo list, at the final publication of the WA rankings.

The qualification periods for athletes to obtain standards are: All Individual events (except events below) – August 1, 2024 to August 24, 2025 10,000m – February 25, 2024 to August 24, 2025 – Combined Events – February 25, 2024 to August 24, 2025 World champions from Budapest – including JOSH KERR and KATARINA THOMPSON-THOMPSON – will receive wild cards for Tokyo.

The world track and field trials takes place at the Alexander Stadium, Birmingham on August 2-3, 2025. The world 10,000m trials occurs at the University of Birmingham on June 14.

UK Athletics took 64 athletes to last year’s Paris Olympics, with the British team securing 10 track and field medals – their best tally since LA 1984. However, the cohort of 64 athletes was smaller than those who competed at London 2012 (71), Rio 2016 (80) and Tokyo 2020 (72).

Here’s how the World Athletics and UKA standards for Tokyo compare:

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

The Power of 10 publishes separate UK rankings for indoor and outdoor performances, I wil record any UK rankings from the 23 January Newsletter.

VICTORIA PARK SPORTS MEDICINE METROPOLITAN LEAGUE – The fifth and final fixture took place at Trent Park on 8 February.
Congratulations to all our athletes, team managers and parents/helpers, for making it yet another succesful season for the club. Generally throughout the age-groups you were outstanding, albeit there are a couple of gliches that require looking at for next season.
We have had a very large number of new members joining in the past 6 months, and their contribution to the teams has been excellent.

The following is my overall assessment of the season’s results.
The Under 11 Boys finished the season in 2nd place to Woodford Green & Essex Ladies. In the first 3 fixtures the team finished a close 2nd to WG&EL, the 4th fixture at Welwyn we had a unexpected heavy loss, but at Trent Park with William Stockdale winning the race, we managed to overcome WG&EL team by 7 points.

The Under 11 Girls had an excellent 2nd half of the season, and by finishing in 2nd place at Trent Park they finished the season in 5th place. When you look at the final table we were only 15 points behind the 2nd place team London Heathside.

The Under 13 Boys made it a clean sweep, winning all 5 fixtures. They became league champions by an enormous 78 points over VP&TH.

The Under 13 Girls with an improved second half of season, the team moved up from 9th to finish the season in 7th place. We had 4 runners at Trent Park.

The Under 15 Boys and Under 17 Men season’s outcome came at Uxbridge, where we conceded some 50 points to WG&EL and HP. The final 2 fixtures we finished in 3rd place, which meant we ended up in 3rd place overall.

The Under 15 Girls and Under 17 Women generally were struggling, due to a lack of runners, which meant at Trent Park we finished a respectable 8th place overall.

The Senior Men after the first 2 fixtures, they almost had 1 foot in Division 2. They last 3 fixtures have been and amazing turnaround, and at Trent Park with Jamie Dee winning the race, the team finished the season in 8th place.

The Senior Women it has been a challenging season, due to a lack of runners. At Trent Park we managed to avoid relegation comfortable, and finished the season in 8th place.

The Veterans Men completed their 1st season in Division 1 in fine style, by finishing in 7th place at Trent Park. Enabling the team to finish the season in 11th place, therefore we will be challenging again in Division 1.

In the Junior section of the Howard Williams Trophy, we have moved up from 3rd to 2nd place, following our Under 11 and 13 Boys team win and our Under 15 Boys/Under 17 Men’s 3rd team place.

THE EXTREME CHALLENGE OF THE 1972 NATIONAL  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

We look back at one of the most challenging English National Cross Country Championships as runners battled against brutal weather in 1972. As anticipation builds for the 2025 English Cross Country Championships, set for February 22 at Parliament Hill, it’s worth reflecting on one of the most memorable and challenging editions in the event’s long history – held 53 years ago in 1972.

That year’s race, the last to be hosted at Sutton Park (March 4), is still etched in the memories of all who participated, thanks to the brutal weather conditions that took a dramatic turn over the course of the day. What began as tolerable winter weather quickly turned into an arctic-like storm. By afternoon, the rain turned to sleet, then to snow, and the temperature plummeted, turning the course into an unforgiving battlefield. While extreme weather is often part of the cross country experience, 1972’s conditions were on an entirely different level. Runners struggled against a strong headwind and icy ground, with many needing medical attention and a trip to the hospital after finishing the race.

The officials also had to endure the hard conditions. Tragically, TOM OWEN, an official from Liverpool, passed away from a heart attack while travelling home after the event. At the time, the women’s race was held separately, a week earlier at High Wycombe. But for the men, it was a truly brutal test. As the conditions worsened during the senior race, runners had to complete three laps of a gruelling nine-mile course, and as the storm intensified, the officials’ tent became a refuge for those seeking shelter and first aid after finishing. For those who managed to cross the finish line, the ordeal didn’t end there. They faced an additional mile-and-a-half walk to the changing rooms. The event earned the headline: “Arctic weather turned ‘National’ into a grim survival test” in AW.

Welshman MALCOLM THOMAS, competing for Thames Valley Harriers, triumphed in the race, having improved on his second-place finish from the previous year. DAVE BEDFORD, who had won the previous year, was unable to compete due to an Achilles injury and was instead a spectator.

With most runners falling at some stage during the race, even THOMAS took a tumble about a mile before the finish line. BILL ROBINSON of Gateshead finished second, 36 seconds behind THOMAS. ROBINSON had previously only been ranked 23rd in the National and clearly the tough weather conditions suited him. ALLAN RUSHMER, a three-time Commonwealth medallist rounded out the top three. The National Cross Country Championships has a long 149-year history and the only other times the event was cancelled before 2021 was during the world wars.

However, the Covid pandemic saw the 2021 event called off and in 2024 it was postponed due to the car parks being affected by torrential rain and flooding – the first time weather had forced the cancellation. It was rescheduled for September 2024, with NIAMH BROWN and HUGO MILNER taking the senior titles. Looking ahead to 2025, the Championships will return to Parliament Hill on February 22. Let’s hope the weather is much more forgiving than it was during the unforgettable 1972 edition.

MILE TO REPLACE 1500m AT 2026 COMMONWEALTH GAMES  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph of ROGER BANNISTER and JOHN LANDY was taken by MARK SHEARMAN.

Organisers of the 2026 Commonwealth Games have announced the mile will replace the 1500m in Glasgow. The Commonwealth Mile, which will see athletes racing over the distance at the Games for the first time in 60 years, is a tribute to ROGER BANNISTER and JOHN LANDY’S fearsome battle over approximately four laps in 1954. Dubbed “The Miracle Mile”, BANNISTER and LANDY clocked (3:58.8) and (3:59.6) respectively at the then British Empire and Commonwealth Games – the first time that two men had ever broken the four-minute barrier in the same race. The pulsating contest, watched by 35,000 people in Vancouver, took place just three months after BANNISTER became the first person in history to record a sub-four-minute mile, at Oxford’s Iffley Road. LANDY subsequently lowered the world record to (3:58.0), meaning their showdown in Canada became one of the most anticipated events of that entire Games.

A sculpture of the race-deciding moment, with barely anything separating BANNISTER and LANDY at the finish line, was later placed outside the Empire Stadium in memory of the duel. The mile lasted until the 1966 Games in Jamaica, before it was replaced with the 1500m at the 1970 edition in Edinburgh. Women never got the opportunity to compete in the mile at the Games – their longest race in 1954 was the 220 yard sprint – and the first official women’s mile record was the (4:37.0) set by ANNE SMITH in 1967. “The mile is the quintessential Commonwealth athletics event whose return I very much welcome,” said World Athletics President SEBASTIAN COE who suggested the event to Glasgow organisers. “From 1930 through to 1966, the mile was the blue-riband event of each Games and the magic of the mile continues to resonate. A ticket to watch its Commonwealth final will be one of the must-have seats in Glasgow next year.”

As well as the introduction of the mile, the mixed 4x400m – the event has already appeared at both the Olympics and world championships – will make its debut at the Commonwealth Games. Para Athletics will also see athletes competing in jumping, throwing and track events, with all three disciplines being included on the programme for the first time in Games history. “This compelling medal event programme continues the red thread of innovation that is a key component of Glasgow 2026’s compelling concept – in terms of sports formats and disciplines, the compact number of sports, and concentrated number of existing venues,” said Chief Executive of the Commonwealth Games Federation, KATIE SADLIER. “We are thrilled to see such an exciting medal programme for the Commonwealth Games that will be sure to delight and excite fans attending in-person or watching at home across each day of competition. “With more para sport medals than ever before in the Games, Glasgow 2026 promises to be a truly inclusive festival of sport and celebration of culture and diversity that inspires our athletes.”

The Power of 10 publishes separate UK rankings for indoor and outdoor performances, I wil record any UK rankings from the 23 January Newsletter.

BRITISH WORLD 10000m TRIAL HEADS TO BIRMINGHAM  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

University of Birmingham will see athletes battling it out for spots at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. After the Night of the 10,000m PBs decided to take a fallow year, this season’s British world 10,000m trials will now be held at the University of Birmingham’s track (June 14). The UK Athletics 10,000m Championships, which doubles up as the trials for September’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, will see some of the best distance runners across the country battle it out for qualification. Traditionally, the domestic event over 25 laps has taken place at the Night of the 10,000m PBs in Highgate, north London. However, the popular and much beloved athletics meet has copied Glastonbury this season by having a fallow year.

The volunteer-driven and spectator-friendly meeting, established by BEN POCHEE in 2013 to improve British racing standards, returns in two years and it’s expected to be bigger and better. That meant this year’s domestic 10,000m championships needed another venue, with the University of Birmingham being the preferred choice. The university actually hosted the Tokyo Olympic 10,000m trials four years ago, with EILISH MCCOLGAN and MARC SCOTT securing their spot on the plane by becoming national champions. The event, which doubled up as the European Cup, also saw MO FARAH’S hopes of being able to defend his Olympic 10,000m crown left in disarray. The 10-time global champion insisted he was hampered by an ankle injury after clocking (27:50.64) under the lights.

This year’s qualification standards for the Tokyo World Championships are (27:00) and (32:20) for men and women respectively. The qualification period to obtain the standards, either in the 10,000m or over 10km, is between February 25, 2024 and August 24, 2025. These are the proposed entry standards for races at this year’s UK Athletics 10,000m Championships: Women’s A race:  33:00, Women’s B race: 34:20, Men’s A race:  28:45, Men’s B race:  29:30

“We are looking forward to this event, not least because our last time at this venue saw some cracking performances,” CHRIS JONES, UKAs Head of Endurance Strategy said. “Thanks go to LUKE GUNN and the team at Birmingham University for hosting the championships. The endurance community in Birmingham will bring a great atmosphere to the event and help athletes strive for those times.”

WHY A WORLD TREADMILL CHAMPIONSHIPS MIGHT NOT BE A BAD IDEA  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

It might have first been mentioned as a joke, but World Athletics’ proposal to stage a world treadmill championships has merit and is way for athletics to tap into a huge market. If it seemed like an April Fools’ Day prank perhaps that’s because it once was. In 2023, on April 1, Canadian Running Magazine published an article proudly proclaiming that the “inaugural World Treadmill Championships are coming to Canada”. The event, it suggested, was aimed at broadening the sport of running to a wider audience and making it “more inclusive to fair-weather runners”. It even included a fictitious quote from World Athletics explaining that Edmonton was the “ideal destination for the event” because “it’s absolutely freezing” there. So far, so amusing. But then came the recent news that athletics’ governing body are actively looking to launch the event. What had begun as nothing more than a throwaway bit of humour had suddenly moved to the cusp of reality.

“There are millions of people around the world that just go to the gym and run on the treadmill,” World Athletics chief executive JON RIDGEON told the Daily Mail. “We should create products for those people. We should have a Treadmill World Championships. “You are an athlete if you go for a 30-minute run on a treadmill or if you win an Olympic gold medal in the 100 metres. It is all athletics. We are working it out at the moment. We will be announcing a tech partner that we are going to work with to develop the virtual running scene.”

The reception was, to put it mildly, mixed. To many athletics fans, RIDGEON’S words were no more serious than that April Fools’ Day joke. Responding to AW’s Instagram post about the news, merica’s Olympic 110m hurdles finalist FREDDIE CRITTENDEN said: “Our Global Governing body is really trying to make [a Nintendo] Wii sports championships. What are we doing man?” Multiple world, Commonwealth and European 4x400m medalist CONRAD WILLIAMS wrote: “Pointless. And not needed.” Others were more supportive. “Sign me up!” said multiple Commonwealth and European medalist EILISH MCCOLGAN. “Obviously, the sport has a lot of other areas to fix… But it could be a good way of connecting our sport with the mass market, every day runner, who hits the treadmill in the gym. And it’s a far better idea than adding another sprint relay, IMO [in my opinion]!” Her partner, former international 800m runner MICHAEL RIMMER, said he thought “there could be an appetite for this type of content” and praised the governing body’s “imagination”.

Athletics, like almost every sport battling for relevance and changing 21st-century consumption patterns, has problems. Athletes are not sufficiently remunerated, mainstream television deals are fading, and sponsorship is either lacking or obscure (an online search for Wanda, the Diamond League’s headline sponsor, brings up multiple results related to a fictional comic book character rather than the Chinese conglomerate that has a 10-year deal with athletics’ premier season-long competition). The field element of the sport seems set on a path towards disappearance, with World Athletics, MICHAEL JOHNSON’S upcoming Grand Slam Track and a handful of other bold start-ups all focusing attention on track events. So yes, athletics has big issues. But that does not mean a World Treadmill Championships should be treated with scorn. Indoor gym versions of existing sports are big business. Originally launched in 2020 as a way to continue the sport during Covid, indoor triathlon sees the world’s best competitors cycle on static bikes, run on treadmills and swim in a 50-metre pool, with virtual avatars reflecting the progress of each competitor on large in-venue screens and to television viewers. Earlier this year in the London Aquatics Centre, Britain’s BETH POTTER pipped CASSANDRE BEAUGRAND to the supertri E World Triathlon Championship title a few months before the Frenchwoman turned the tables to claim the Olympic title. Athletics is, in fact, the only one of the three individual triathlon disciplines not to have an indoor gym version of the sport.

The World Indoor Rowing Championships have been held annually since 2018 and see competitors use rowing machines, known as ergometers. The UCI Cycling Esports World Championships launched in 2020, with participants riding bikes indoors fixed on turbo trainers. “We are looking to produce an athletics version,” confirmed RIDGEON to the Daily Mail. “When you think athletics is the most participated sport in the world, we should have our equivalent. “We are trying to innovate across a whole range of areas and future-proof the sport as much as we can.” While elite athletics struggles for eyeballs, mass participation running events and fitness programmes are booming. A staggering 840,318 people applied for the 2025 London Marathon ballot. Predominantly indoor training regimes like CrossFit (which features a mix of aerobic, bodyweight and weightlifting exercises) and Hyrox (consisting of eight kilometres of running interspersed with eight functional exercises) are growing exponentially. There is a ripe market of people who may associate with a treadmill but neither have the faintest idea where their local athletics track is nor the vaguest inclination to engage with what happens on it. We are also in an era accustomed to using digital technology during fitness and exercise, and seeing it integrated into the elite end of sport.

Shifting competitive running onto a treadmill and linking it with a digital avatar might be anathema to the seasoned athletics follower, but those already in love with the sport are insufficient to safeguard its future. Growth is paramount and here is a potential untapped audience. “We have to embrace and we have got to take our sport to where people are,” explained World Athletics president SEB COE. “That is crucial.” The nuts and bolts of what any World Treadmill Championships might look like are entirely unknown at this stage. The use of self-powered curved treadmills (used in the indoor triathlon version) would appear the most likely equipment, while a link with an interactive online platform like Zwift or MyWhoosh can be expected. As for distances or race format, it is safe to assume middle or long distances would be best suited. So for any sprinters, jumpers, throwers and hurdlers – and their supporters – it will almost certainly not be for them. But while athletics’ myriad battles remain, that is no reason to knock a potential avenue to grow the sport further. Even if it did start life as a joke.
