CARDIAC SCREENING – British Athletics is alert to its responsibility to all participants in athletics in respect of all aspects of health and safety. One particular area that young athletes and their parents must be aware of is the risk of cardiac problems.
There have been too many instances of young athletes suffering potentially fatal heart conditions without being conscious that they are at risk.
British Athletics has worked with Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) for several years, providing a screening service to athletes on the World Class Performance Programme. British Athletics and CRY are now seeking to encourage more athletes to use CRY’s screening service to help to identify any cardiac problems that may be otherwise hidden.
CRY is a charity that was established to raise awareness of conditions that can lead to the sudden cardiac death of young people. They operate a screening programme at a number of clinics around the UK and support this with mobile units that travel to other locations.
Full information about CRY and their services can be found on their website at http://www.c-r-y.org.uk/cardiac-screening/
Young people between the age of 14 and 35 who would like to have cardiac testing can go to www.testmyheart.org.
COURSE MEASUREMENTS, HOW IT WORKS – The following article appeared recently in Athletics Weekly.
Measurements take place on a bike with a “Jones counter”, which measures revolutions, or to be precise “clicks”, of which 23 make up a revolution. Each click represents about 8cm but before each course measurement is done, the bike will need calibrating. You might be using the same bike as used before but many factors like temperature will affect how far each click represents. To do this, you would need to cycle in a straight line along a known length of tarmac – the “calibration strip”, which had been measured precisely with a steel tape. The strip must be between 300m and 800m and has to be covered four times – twice in each direction – with an average taken. From this and, also adding in the short-course prevention factor of one metre per kilometre, you have a “calibration constant” of a number of clicks per kilometre. At this point, it is worth pointing out that when runners claim the distance of a course is long based on their Garmins, it is probably because it is long! A 10km is measured as 10km plus 10m.
When the calibration is done, you can measure the course. An added complication is that organisers will nearly always want to know where the kilometre or mile markers should go. The measurer or, if present, organiser will then have to go to great lengths to accurately record where these are, perhaps also taking photographs – it could be certain drain cover x metres from a corner, but in a park you are often more limited.
When the course is covered, you do a second calibration. If the calibration constant turns out to be higher this time then that is the figure which needs to be used in calculations instead, meaning the distant markers and overall course will have to be adjusted accordingly – probably only by a small handful of metres.
