WORLD SCHOOLS CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP – Congratulations to DAVID STONE following his outstanding win in the Under 17  English XC Championships, has been selected to represent England in Paris this April.

HOME NATIONS INTERNATIONAL – Congratulations to CHARLIE DOBSON (200m) and PHOENIX LYON (200m) have selected to represent England in Cardiff on 4  March

2 NEW INDOOR CLUB RECORDS – Congratulations to HANNAH FOSTER who at the English Indoor Championships last Sunday 25 February recorded (38.77) for the Under 17 Women 300m. This eclipsed SABRINA BAKARE’S (39.16) which was set in Birmingham on the 25 February 2012. Also to JAZZ SEARS also at the English Indoor Championships last Sunday 25 February recorded (12.34m) for the Under 17 Women Triple Jump, breaking her own record (12.23m) which she set at Lee Valley on the 7 January 2018, and is also a new British Record.

NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS – Took place last Saturday at Parliament Hill for the 16th time, featuring the famous uphill start with the London skyline background.

The gruelling course on Hampstead Heath is one of the most popular and most photographed venues in the world. It is surely also worthy of a world championships.
There was an astonishing entry of 9569 runners over the 10 races, as ever, the biggest event was saved to last, the Senior Men’s race which was held for the 131st time, with 3486 entries, easily the most in the past decade.

Congratulations to those who completed the challenge of Parliament Hill, especially to those who had run it for the first time. Pride of place goes to DAVID STONE who became the English Under 17 Champion winning a tough race by 1 second. In the Senior Women’s race NAOMI TASCHIMOWITZ eclipsing her 14th place in 2015.  THOMAS BUTLER  2018 form continued and he finished in 20th place. The Senior Men produced an outstanding performance finishing in 6th place, with WILLIAM RYLE-HODGES 45th, MARK PEARCE 49th and PHILLIP CROUT 54th leading the boys home.

Under 13 Boys (3000m) – SAMUEL GREENSTEIN 38th (12.24), LEO RONCARATI 120th  (13.04), ARCHIE NASH 263rd (13.50), THEO BODEN 265th (13.50), DYLAN HAMMOND 309th (14.06), LEO MIXIDES 348th (14.11), TOBY EDWARDS 465th (15.00), JOSEPH O’HARA 475th (15.09) the winner was William Rabjohns of Poole (11.22) with 570 runners finishing. Under 13 Girls (3000m) – AIMI WEIGHTMAN 78th (13.48), REBECCA JEFFERY 422nd (17.12) the winner was Maisy Luke of Cornwall (12.25) with 467 runners finishing. Team result 1st Chiltern Harriers (77 points), 2nd Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow (164), 3rd Blackheath & Bromley (183).

NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY PHOTOGRAPHS – Received from KENNY GROOM – the first is of TONY SMITH looking maybe for DAVID STONE coming home, next DAVID STONE crossing the finish line to win the National title, and the final is DAVID with his Mother and Father.

PROFILE ON DAVID STONE –DAVID joined Shaftesbury in 2013 as an Under 13 started his career with a bang as he was a member of the SBH Under 13 team which won the English Road Relay Championships in Sutton Park, Birmingham in which it did not stop raining.

NATHAN FERNANDES started on Leg 1 and finished in 9th place 32 seconds behind the leader. DAVID ran on Leg 2 and i was supporting the team some half a mile from the finish, all of a sudden there was this diminutive figure of DAVID appearing over the hill in the lead and handed over to JAMIE HARPER with a 29 second lead. JAMIE anchored the team to the Gold Medal eventually extending the teams winning lead to 41 seconds.

RUNNING TOP LOST – Following the National last Saturday, did anyone pick up a Pink English Schools running top by mistake, it belongs to MIA GROOM.

ENGLAND U15/U17/U20 INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP – Took place in Sheffield last Saturday and Sunday.

With 35 Shaftesbury athletes competing at this level, the performances overall were exceptional, finishing the week-end with 5 English Champions. Starting with DOMINIC ASHWELL won the Under 20 Men 60m (6.70) by .11 of a second retaining the title he won in 2017. REMI JOKOSENUMI won the Under 15 Boys 200m (22.51) by .07 of a second and is unbeaten in 2018 including winning the Southern Championships. CHARLIE DOBSON won the Under 20 Men 200m in a new personal best (21.02) by .73 of a second and is also unbeaten in his 6 races in 2018. HANNAH FOSTER won the Under 17 Women 300m in a new personal best/club record (38.77) by .79 of a second and her record in the 300m since she was and Under 15 in 2015 is 23 wins out of 25 races. One of the highlights of the day was without doubt the U17 Women’s Triple jump where JAZZ SEARS broke her own British and Club record set at Lee Valley earlier this year. The Southern Champion reached (12.23m) on that occasion but produced a sensational (12.34m) 2nd round jump to the booming applause of the crowd inside the EIS arena to claim the title. There were Silver Medals from THOMAS PATRICK Under 20 Men 1500m and JADE IVE Senior Women Pole Vault. Also, Bronze Medals from MICAH FORBES-AGYEPONG Under 17 Men 60m, PHOENIX LYON Under 20 Men 200m, FINN HARVEY Under 17 Men 1500m and JOSH WOODS Under 17 Men Triple Jump.

We are pleased to announce that CHINWE IWUNZE has agreed to be the Eastern Young Athletes League Under 17 Women’s Team Manager, and we ask all our U17 athletes to keep in touch with CHINWE, especially on your intention to compete in the 5 fixtures.

NORTH WEST LONDON LEAGUE – The fifth fixture of five takes place on Saturday 24 March at Wormwood Scrubs, Linford Christie Stadium, Du Cane Road (SatNav W12 0AE). Enter main car park off Du Cane Road (via Artillery Lane), through 6’6” height/width barrier. Extra parking will be available in the enclosed/fenced hospital parking area. SARACENS SPORT FOUNDATION – Little athletics programme is an athletics ‘Multi Skills’ programme for children aged 4-9 years. The programme is designed to teach children fundamental movement skills of athletics – running, jumping and throwing. The sessions are game based and as of September there will be a progression throughout the term.
LAP runs on a Tuesday and Thursday from 4.30-5.30pm – Term time only.  
1st Legacy athletics club is a pathway club for children aged 10-15 years new to athletics. Children are introduced to all the different athletics disciplines and have the opportunity to develop running, jumping and running skills that we hope they will then go onto use as a participant in the formal athletics club structure or in any other sport for activity they choose to progress to. The lead coach is Gintare Dargeviciute who brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the club.
1st Leg AC runs on a Tuesday and Thursday from 5.00–6.00pm – Term time only.
