DAVID SMITH representing Scotland in his third Commonwealth Games. The High Jump competition was a straight Final, DAVID came in at (2.15m) and cleared this first time, his next height was (2.19m) and just failed to clear this height, and finished in ninth place.

LINA NIELSEN was drawn in Heat 1 of the 400m Hurdles. From the first hurdle LINA was struggling and crossed the line in sixth place with (58.95). LINA’S post-race interview was very moving, in which she disclosed her struggle with Multiple Sclerosis, we wish her well for the future.
NICK PERCY representing Scotland in his second Commonwealth Games. NICK started the Final of the Discus in good spirits, and with his second attempt he threw (63.56m) which left him in fifth place. DAY 8 – 5 AUGUST – ZHARNEL HUGHES started his 200m Semi-Final 1 in great spirits. The race was almost a carbon copy of his Heat win, which meant he coasted the home straight to finish in first place with (20.32 w2.1).
LIZZIE BIRD started the 3000m Steeplechase Final in excellent form. LIZZIE’S race tactics were based on her finishing speed, at 1000m she was almost 6 seconds behind CHEPKOECH and CHEMUTAI, at 200m it had grown to 7 seconds, from this point LIZZIE started to close the gap, overtaking CHEMUTAI, in the final 400m, and was closing rapidly on CHEPKOECH, but not enough to win an amazing Silver Medal. In a personal best (9:17.79) taking 1.67 seconds off her 18 June time, and is ranked UK No.2 in 2022, UK all-time No.2.
SCOTT LINCOLN in his first Commonwealth Games. Started the Final of the Shot Put in good form flowing his recent season’s best. SCOTT’S first put (19.80m) was enough to finish in the top eight, his best put was achieved in the fifth round (20.57m), which won him a well-deserved Bronze Medal.

LINA NIELSEN, I WOULDN’T WISH IT UPON MY WORST ENEMY, EXPERIENCING PARALYSIS – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph by MARK SHEARMAN.
British 400m hurdler was determined to compete at Commonwealth Games even after relapse of multiple sclerosis at World Championships. LINA NIELSEN is a 400m hurdler who told her story and it transcended an entire sport. In an exclusive interview with The Telegraph, the 26-year-old said that for half of her life she had multiple sclerosis and was diagnosed with the condition nine years ago.
A relapse occurred just a day before her heats at the World Championships in Oregon. Failing to qualify for the semi-finals was an irrelevance compared to what followed. After keeping her diagnosis of multiple sclerosis to just a small circle of friends, family and a select number of team-mates, NIELSEN revealed to the world that she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis just before her 18th birthday. Anything that occurred on the track suddenly became second fiddle. “It’s a lot to deal with and I wanted to share my piece and the strength and bravery that I’ve had to go through as I want to inspire other people,” she says, after finishing her 400m hurdles heat at the Commonwealth Games. “My goal in sport regardless of my condition is to inspire. I was inspired into the sport and I want to inspire while I’m in the sport. This is my way of doing it. “I’m quite a private person when it comes to my life anyway so I feel a bit vulnerable but that’s a good thing. My team-mates and friends and family knew [about the multiple sclerosis]. It wasn’t like a big secret but it was something that I just decided not to publicise.”
LINA states that she went into the World Championships in the best shape of her life. This isn’t hard to work out given she set a personal best of (54.73) in the 400m hurdles on 9 June at the Rome Diamond League. Even after her relapse in Oregon, the prospect of making her Commonwealth Games debut, in front of a 30,000 sell-out home crowd in Birmingham, was too much of an opportunity to miss. “I am still navigating recovery,” she adds. “I did have right-sided weakness up until Monday this week. Not long ago, I couldn’t really walk normally. I was limping walking my dog in the park. “I would have run anyway. It’s a home crowd. The last time we experienced a crowd like this was London 2012. It is not something that comes round very often. It was always the goal for this season, to do the Commonwealth Games. So the moment I started winter’s training it was the goal and I couldn’t pull out just because I am not 100%. “I am 10% out of shape. I am not 100% either. I am somewhere in-between. The whole point of sport is going out there and giving it your best shot, I did that, and I got what I wanted from my Commonwealth Games.”
Over the last decade the athletics world has got used to seeing not one but two NIELSENS on track. Her twin sister LAVIAI, who won world 4x400m bronze in Eugene, burst on the scene in 2015 when she claimed 400m gold at the European Junior Championships. Since then she’s become a double world 4x400m medallist and double European Indoor champion. To say the two are close is an understatement. Both have followed each other into the sport but more importantly been there for each other when times got tough.
When LINA was 13 her left arm turned numb – the first time that she experienced the effects of multiple sclerosis – but it wasn’t until 2017 when what was previously unknown manifested into something much more serious. LINA’S multiple sclerosis had flared up so badly that she couldn’t move her right leg and arm and was essentially paralysed down the right hand side of her body. LAVIAI was there every second of the way.
WORLD CLASS ATHLETICS RETURNS TO LONDON IN 2023 – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph of the London Stadium by MARK SHEARMAN.
As the dust settles on the Commonwealth Games, the Anniversary Games is confirmed for July 23 next year. The Diamond League will return to London next year for the first time in four years. The Anniversary Games will be staged on Sunday July 23, 2023. British athletes are likely to be at the fore as they finish their preparations ahead of the World Championships in Budapest from 19-27 August. It will also be a celebration for athletes returning medallists from the World Para Athletics Championships in Paris from 8-17 July.
As we reported on July 27, JACK BUCKNER confirmed that the event was due to be staged in London next year. On the importance of London staging athletics, he said at the time: “Apart from being the biggest centre of population it has the clubs, athletes, history, heritage. “It’s important domestically for the sport and I think it’s important conceptually because if you go anywhere in international sport then everyone wants to come to London. These global cities have a disproportionate impact. That said Birmingham will be brilliant, too, and of course we have the European [Championships] bid there.” In addition UKA will hold a festival of athletics to engage the local community, schools and clubs with a series of events from 20-23 July. Building on the success of the 2019 festival, 2023 will see a return of the successful London Borough Connect Relays, engaging youngsters from across the London area in a day of relay races. There will also be a sports day, including races for young para athletes, Club Connect relay races for local athletics clubs and a Couch to 5km race around the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park finishing in the stadium. Finally, the hugely popular ‘Legends Relay’ will take place within the athletics programme at the Diamond League event, with scores to be settled between some of the UK’s most successful and legendary athlete names following their 2019 battle.
CHERRY ALEXANDER, UKA’s strategic lead for major events said: “We are so excited to be returning to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park next year! The London Stadium holds such happy memories for us and seeing athletics return to this iconic venue is going to be fantastic for the best supporters in the world. “It’s also great to once again be inviting youngsters from across London and the local community to participate in our Festival of Athletics. There is something for everyone to enjoy and take part in over the four days and we can’t wait to bring the sport back to the capital!”
