SBH joint Men’s and Women’s team are currently 2nd in the NAL Premiership. We need to finish in the top 8 after 3 rounds to qualify for the Premiership Final on Saturday 20 August in Bedford.
Round 3 fixture takes place at StoneX Stadium, in which our opponents are Harrow (3) v Newham (14) v Notts (13) v Sheffield (8) v Thames Valley (1) v Trafford (7) v Windsor (6). It will be a good standard meeting as we’re up against not only local rivals Thames Valley who are leading the Premiership and Harrow who are 3rd but also Windsor who beat us at Eton in Round 2. All are welcome to support SBH, with many International athletes competing.

WHY ATHLETES NEED TO EMBRACE SUN PROTECTION  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

SPENCER DUVAL from England Athletics offers advice on how to keep your skin safe this summer. With athletes spending hours under the sun while training and competing, you’d think they would be used to protecting their skin? As it turns out, sun protection – in all formats – is often not seen by athletes as a necessity, in fact it can be unpopular or just forgotten about. Protective clothing can sometimes be restrictive, inhibiting movement, hats can fly off, sunglasses can dislodge, and sunscreen can be greasy, and when combined with sweat, it can cause a stinging sensation in the eyes. So it’s not a surprise that a lot of professional athletes neglect protecting their skin when training and competing, but at what cost? Forgoing sun protection, as we know, is just too risky. Prolonged sun exposure will cause early ageing of the skin, wrinkles, age spots and solar keratosis, which can look unsightly. Accumulated exposure can cause many types of non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) the most common cancer in the UK. And at worst, melanoma, which can spread to other parts of the body. To create awareness and solutions to these issues, the Melanoma Fund created Sunguarding Sport, a free resource containing guidelines, sport specific advice and a toolkit of materials designed specifically for all in sport and outdoor recreation.

SPENCER DUVAL, an Olympian and Commonwealth Games endurance runner and the current national endurance lead for England Athletics, answers some questions about running in the UK. He is also a Sunguard ambassador for the campaign, and is keen to help spread awareness around the issue, to inspire more athletes to take another look at their skin health, and cut rates of skin cancer. We talk to SPENCER to find solutions to the most common issues, helping eradicate the excuses that many athletes use to avoid protecting themselves.

Why did you agree to become a Sunguard ambassador My role at England Athletics is not just about creating a safe environment for the teams that I work with, but also identifying risks to ensure everyone is educated and informed. Sun protection has been off the radar in sport for far too long, and with rates of melanoma up by 140% since the 1990s this needs intervention and more education. I am delighted to bring my knowledge and experience to this new role, creating awareness as a spokesperson for the campaign, to help inspire athletes and all in sport to take a fresh look at their own habits. If you look after your health, which athletes should always do, then don’t forget your skin health!

In your role of national endurance lead, have you always promoted sun protection to your teams Endurance runners often spend a lot of time out in the open air when they are training and competing. There are warm weather camps and altitude trips that form part of the preparation of athletes. Being out in the sun is a necessity of the endurance runner. At England Athletics we always try and educate the athletes not only about training and racing opportunities but also about their general health and wellbeing. We try to highlight any issues or concerns that may impact on performance and one of the obvious ones is over exposure to the sun. Athletes are warned to try and stay out of the midday sun and to always cover up as much as possible but sometimes it is impossible due to race and training schedules. This is especially important with the younger runners as reinforcement is often needed. Sun protection is as important as hydration and recovery and should be taken seriously.

As a professional athlete, what challenges have you faced around sun protection I have trained under hot, humid and frequently high-UV (ultraviolet radiation) conditions to acclimatise for competition. Often I was not in control of the schedules and locations for events and practices, which were typically without shade. Clothing was often minimal in protection but has got better through the years due to innovation. As an athlete we are concerned with performance, and remembering to protect skin seemed to come way down the line in priorities, which of course is wrong. Sun protection should be considered one of the essential training aids and used regularly.

What solutions do you have for these challenges As a solution, I would say:

» If you are travelling abroad, remember to arrive sun prepared, as sunscreen and other forms of protection may not be available where you are or are very expensive.

» Plan ahead and be prepared.

» Look to wear appropriately vented but UV protection running kit where possible. Make sure you can perform in this kit.

» Choose your training times carefully.

» Sun protect before you get on a run, and then focus on your performance!

What other risk factors are there in athletics As well as unprotected sun exposure, there is an increasing trend among young people to use sunbeds. Athletes often feel under pressure to conform to aesthetic preconceptions, especially in today’s social media environment, where image is important. Many perform their events in minimal clothing, and so it’s important for them to feel confident, and a tan can be quite flattering. If you still want to tan your skin, opt for a professional spray tan, or buy a bottle – which is cheaper, and I’m told does a sterling job.

What tips do you have for athletes about creating better sun protection habits It is up to each individual to take responsibility for their performance, wellbeing and health, and that includes skin health. We are aware that all skin types and colour are vulnerable to skin cancer, however some are more susceptible than others, so get to know your skin and plan ahead! I recommend that all athletes visit the Sunguarding Sport website and simply educate yourself on the facts. There are some really useful guidelines and sport specific tips that you can start to take on board. Building habits is never easy, but by simply being aware, you can start to make small changes. Skin cancer is like any other cancer diagnosis. It’s your health, so look after it.

How can athletes become role-models for younger athletes In today’s society we can all be influencers. Professional athletes can play a positive role in inspiring young people both with their performances and their healthy habits. UV exposure in childhood and adolescence plays an important role in the development of skin cancer, with just one sunburn doubling the risk of melanoma in later life. Many health behaviours are formed and established whilst young, and are more easily formed, so why not create habits that inspire young people to copy?

What are your five top tips for staying sun protected You will find lots of tips on the Sunguarding Sport website, however these are some personal tips that have served me well!

» Find a non-greasy sunscreen that you enjoy wearing and wear it! (Sunscreen doesn’t work in kit bags).

» Protect your skin before you start activity and remember to re-apply regularly.

» Compare the condition of the skin on your glutes to your arms. This is a wake up call for revealing sun damage. Remember – it’s never too late to start protecting!

» Train outside of peak UV hours (11am – 3pm) if at all possible, and seek shade for breaks.

» Remember to hydrate regularly with water, as this will prevent overheating in summer.

LONDON MARATHON RENEWS DEAL WITH BBC  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

The annual 26.2-mile event strikes new five-year deal with the channel, which will be shown on BBC for a further five years after the event struck a new deal that lasts until 2026. There had been speculation that London Marathon might sign up with a different broadcaster but it has decided to remain faithful to a partnership that started in 1981. In addition to coverage of the London Marathon, the BBC will showcase London Marathon Events’ new initiatives to inspire and encourage physical activity, starting with inspiring more children across the UK to take part in the 2022 TCS Mini London Marathon. The BBC will also show coverage of other LME events, including The Big Half, the Vitality London 10,000 and the Vitality Westminster Mile, on BBC Red Button or other BBC digital platforms.

HUGH BRASHER, Event Director of London Marathon Events, said: “Our partnership with the BBC goes back more than 40 years and the support of the BBC has been key to the development of the London Marathon into one of the capital’s great days out that is so loved by millions. “Together we have worked through many challenges over the years including, most recently, the Covid-19 pandemic, which led to elite-only races and the first virtual marathon in 2020 – the coverage of which was shortlisted for a BAFTA. “We are delighted to continue our partnership and very excited about our new initiative to inspire and encourage physical activity. We are facing a national obesity and mental health crisis and getting active and taking regular exercise is key to addressing this.”

BARBARA SLATER, Director of BBC Sport, said: “The London Marathon is an iconic event in the UK’s sporting calendar and one that we are thrilled to continue broadcasting for another five years. We look forward to showcasing the elite athletes from the race, as well as the inspiring and touching stories of the thousands of charity runners who take part each year.” The 2022 TCS London Marathon takes place on 2 October and then returns to its usual April slot on 23 April next year.

SEB COE: BIOLOGY TRUMPS GENDER  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

World Athletics president supports Fina stance on transgender inclusion and says his governing body will discuss their measures – as well as DSD regulations – at Council meeting. World Athletics president SEB COE has admitted that the global governing body will look at their rules concerning the inclusion of transgender women athletes in female events at a Council meeting toward the end of this year. The two-time Olympic champion outlined his support for the recent measures taken by Fina, swimming’s governing body, which has voted to stop transgender athletes from competing in women’s elite races if they have gone through any part of the process of male puberty. Fina has also stated an ambition to establish an open category in some events for swimmers whose gender identity is different than their birth sex.

As is highlighted in the current issue of AW magazine, a growing number of athletes are becoming increasingly concerned about how the sport of athletics might deal with this issue, insisting that transwomen who have gone through male puberty hold an unfair advantage over their cisgender opponents. There have been calls for the creation of an open category, while there is also the ongoing controversy around the regulations for athletes with Differences of Sex Development (DSD).

Currently World Athletics regulations state that transwomen can compete in female categories, provided they have undergone testosterone suppression to below five nmols/L for one year. DSD athletes, meanwhile, cannot take part in women’s races from 400m to one mile at an international competition, unless they have also lowered their blood testosterone to that same level for six months previously and maintain that level continuously. COE, however, insists these regulations are a “living document” and, asked for World Athletics’ reaction to Fina’s decision, he responded: “We see an international federation asserting its primacy in setting rules, regulations and policies that are in the best interest of its sport. This is as it should be. We have always believed, and repeated constantly, that biology trumps gender and we will continue to review our regulations in line with this.” Would World Athletics consider adopting a similar policy in future? “We have always said our regulations in this area are a living document, specific to our sport and we will follow the science,” added COE. “We continue to study, research and contribute to the growing body of evidence that testosterone is a key determinator in performance and have scheduled a discussion on our DSD and Transgender regulations with our Council at the end of the year.” World Athletics’ DSD regulations have been kept in the spotlight by the legal challenge of former world and Olympic 800m champion CASTER SEMENYA, while athletes such as Olympic 200m silver medallist CHRISTINE MBOMA and Burundi’s FRANCINE NIYONSABA have had to move from their preferred events of 400m and 800m respectively.
