1500m – SW H3 ELLIE BAKER 2nd (4:10.65), in the Final ELLIE finished 11th (4:10.96)
This is the report from the Athletics Weekly website – BAKER’S hopes going into the Euro Indoors were high after she made history at the UKA Indoor Championships (February 19) by breaking ZOLA BUDD’S 1500m championship record from 1986. “The word I would use is confused,” BAKER added. “As I felt in really good shape and the last few weeks has gone well in training, I felt strong but today I had no legs and from the start I was struggling so it was confusing when you think you’re in a good place but you’re not feeling like that in a race. “We’ll go back to the drawing board and go again. I was a bit gutted when I could feel them going away from me as I came here wanting to medal and get that for the team, but when I felt it coming away from me I knew my legs were gone and lost my stride a bit towards the end. It’s one of those things… I will come back stronger and it adds more fuel to the fire! “I’ve taken a lot of things from this season and I feel like I’m in a good place. I have run a PB and I am in a good place but I just want to be more competitive in these championships.”

BETH POTTER WINS OPENING RACE OF THE WORLD TRIATHLON CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES – The first race of the series took place on the 3-4 March at Abu Dhabi.
BETH POTTER won the sprint race in a time of (57:56) ahead of fellow Brit SOPHIE CALDWELL (58.14) and TAYLOR SPIVEY of the USA third (58.27).
The Swim – Given the 24.2C water temperature, there were no wetsuits in sight as the athletes lined up on the pontoon and it was COLDWELL that got off to the best start and was quickly leading the swim pack. Despite the short swim distance, the front pack managed to create a small gap, with Brazil’s VITTORIA LOPES hot on COLDWELL’S feet, RAPPAPORT was well placed in third and was joined by LENA MEILSNER of Germany, SPIVEY and POTTER. COLDWELL emerged from the swim first but was hit with a 10sec time penalty for entering the water too early at the start. She was followed out the water by RAPPAPORT, MEILSNER, SPIVEY, LOPES and POTTER.
What happened on the bike – That time penalty wasn’t too damaging for COLDWELL, however, and she was quickly out on the bike working together with that lead pack. One thing that did change, however, is that those two chase packs had come together, leaving a group of several dozen women bunched up together. What’s more, they had lost a few more seconds on the leaders come the end of the lap. And that gap continued to grow over the next two laps, with the gap to that huge group up to 47secs. The six leaders all came through transition together and emerged as a group, too. As they headed out on the run the chase pack came into view, arriving into transition some 44secs back.
What happened on the run – Out on the run, LOPES quickly dropped off that lead pack, but the remaining five women stuck together, with RAPPAPORT and then POTTER leading from the front. As the first aid station came into view POTTER went on the attack, ignoring any hydration and picking up the pace. The result? For the first time today that lead pack started to stretch out, with fellow Brit staying within touching distance and the other three women dropping back. By the end of the first run lap, POTTER and COLDWELL crossed the line together, with SPIVEY and RAPPAPORT following 10secs behind. Further back there were no significant gains from the chasing group of athletes, with TAYLOR-BROWN finishing the first lap roughly a minute behind the leaders. As the race entered its final stages POTTER made another move and this time COLDWELL wasn’t able to respond. POTTER ended up crossing the line some 18secs ahead of her fellow Brit, with SPIVEY finishing an extra 13secs back.
Quotes from the women’s 2023 WTCS Abu Dhabi race – Speaking just after crossing the finish line, POTTER said: “It’s always a bit of an unknown, the first race of the season, but I feel like I’ve been doing well in training and JONNY BROWNLEE text me this morning and said ‘you’re going to win’. I didn’t quite believe it. I was like, yeah, yeah, I’ll just do my best! “I’ve been working really hard, not only on the physical side, but also mental. I feel much more positive, calm and relaxed going into racing, and just more aggressive.”
Report was published on the 220 Triathlon website.
MODERN OLYMPICS EVOLVED FROM ANCIENT GREEK GAMES – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
The modern Olympics, which is a major international sporting event held every four years since it was first established in 1896, has its roots in the ancient Olympic Games that were held in Olympia, Greece.
The role of technology in shaping Olympic events across history – From the introduction of timing devices to track athletes’ performance, over the use of advanced materials for equipment and apparel, to Olympic-inspired games that you can find at casinos at Casinowings.com, technology has been instrumental in pushing boundaries and enhancing the popularity of the sports. In recent years, technological advancements have allowed for more accurate measurements and data collection during competitions. This has enabled coaches and trainers to better understand their athletes’ performance and make adjustments accordingly. Technology has also helped improve safety standards. For example, helmets are now designed with shock-absorbing materials that can reduce the risk of head trauma during contact sports such as football or rugby.
From ZEUS to PIERRE DE COUBERTIN – The ancient games were dedicated to the Greek god ZEUS and featured various athletic competitions and religious ceremonies. They began around 776 BC and lasted for more than 1000 years until 393 AD when they were abolished by Emperor THEODOSIUS I of Rome as part of his effort to suppress pagan cults. Although the original games had no set schedule or events, some of them included running races, boxing matches and chariot racing – all of which can still be seen today at the modern Olympics. Over time, other sports such as wrestling, pentathlon (a five-event competition), horseback riding and javelin throwing were added to the list of events. Eventually the modern Olympic Games were created by PIERRE DE COUBERTIN in order to revive these ancient traditions with an emphasis on peace and international goodwill between athletes from different nations.
Gender in Olympic history: Women’s participation over time – The first female athlete to compete in the modern Olympics was CHARLOTTE COOPER, who won gold in tennis at the 1900 Paris Games. However, it wasn’t until 1928 that women were allowed to participate in track and field events. Since then, women have made great strides in Olympic history. In 2012, for example, every participating nation sent female athletes to compete for the first time ever. This marked a major milestone for gender equality in sports. Today, women make up nearly half of all Olympic participants and are represented across all disciplines from swimming to weightlifting.
The most iconic moments in Olympic history – From JESSE OWEN’S four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics to NADIA COMANECI’S perfect 10 at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, these moments are forever etched into people’s memories. At the 1972 Munich Olympics, American swimmer MARL SPITZ won seven gold medals in a single Games – a feat that has yet to be matched by any other athlete. In 1980, ERIC HEIDEN became the first person to win five individual gold medals in one Winter Olympics when he dominated speed skating events at Lake Placid. And who can forget about MICHAEL PHELPS’ record-breaking eight gold medals at Beijing 2008?
RICH HISTORY OF THE ISLE OF MAN FESTIVAL OF RUNNING – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
Runners will descend on the island later this month to challenge course records held by athletes such as JONNY MELLOR, ROSIE SMITH and JAMES WALSH. The 59th Isle of Man Easter Festival of Running will fire into life in just a few weeks’ time and the anticipation is already building. This famous annual event, currently supported by IQEQ, has grown from lowly beginnings into one of the best and most anticipated events on the running calendar. This year’s Festival follows the same format that has proved to be such a great success since 2006, and as usual offers a generous prize fund in the region of £5000, with special bonuses for athletes breaking any of the course records. What has set the Easter Festival apart from other athletics events on the Isle of Man since the early 1970s is the invasion of visiting runners which continues to this day. For 50 years and more the Festival has proved to be a magnet for university running teams from all corners of the British Isles, and the traditions of the annual trip to the Isle of Man have been passed down through generations of student athletes. Many have continued to visit each year as alumni members of student teams. Plenty of visiting club teams have contested the Festival over the years too, and some truly great names of the sport have graced the event over the decades – including several Olympians. The opening Quine & Cubbon 10km road race takes place on the evening of Good Friday April 7, starting and finishing on Port Erin Promenade. The race begins at 6.45pm, with men and women running together. It follows a scenic route which includes part of the spectacular coastal footpath from Gansey to Port St Mary.
On Easter Saturday afternoon the Full Factory Winnerswear Peel Hill races take place, with the men going first over a distance of approximately 3.7 miles at 2.15pm. They are followed an hour later at 3.15pm by the women over a course of around 2.7 miles. The atmosphere on the hill is always fantastic and the views spectacular, with the visiting student teams providing masses of colour, noise and fun. The racing concludes on Easter Sunday morning with the Outback 5km road races on Douglas Promenade walkway, with the women leading the way at 10.30am and the men’s race following at 11.15am. The prize presentation and party takes place in the Outback Sports Bar on Sunday evening with doors opening at 7pm, and is strictly ticket-only.
Both the 10km and 5km races have course measurement certificates in place, and so are valid for ranking and record purposes. The current course records are (30:16) JONNY MELLOR, 2007 and (34:18) ROSIE SMITH, 2012 for the 10km, (20:10) JAMES WALSH, 2007 and (16:38) RACHAEL FRANKLIN, 2019 for the Peel Hill Race and (14:36) JONNY MELLOR, 2007 and (17:13) ROSIE SMITH, 2012 for the 5km. The Festival was born with a single event in 1963, attracting just one visiting team and some local runners. By the 1970s it had evolved into a three-day event, attracting many big visiting groups from universities and athletics clubs from around the British Isles and sometimes further afield. The Peel Hill race had become a staple, with two other road races taking several formats over the years. Many regarded the 1970s and 1980s as being the heyday of the Festival, with numerous world-class athletes taking part in fields of several hundreds of runners, including the cream of Manx running talent.
After a few years of decline, a new organising committee took charge of the planning for the 2006 event, with the emphasis on attracting visiting groups back to the Island and also encouraging more local runners to take part. The 2006 Festival, with a new format in place that remains to this day, was a resounding success with entries more than doubling and many visiting groups returning. Support for the Festival continued to grow and the landmark 50th running in 2012 attracted an entry of nearly 400, including legendary marathon runner Ron Hill who attended as guest of honour. Not only did he attend but he ran in all three races, part of a streak of running every day which lasted for over 50 years. The momentum of the Festival seemed to be unstoppable, with a record 551 competitors taking part in 2017. But in 2020, the first-ever cancellation was forced on the event less than a month before Easter due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic and the 2021 event also had to be cancelled. It was feared that it would be difficult to win back the support of the hundreds of visiting athletes, with the traditional passing-on of experience of organising the annual pilgrimage to the Isle of Man being lost – but those fears were ill-founded. A fantastic response to the 2022 Festival ensured that this great event was re-established in style, and hopes are high that the 2023 Festival will be even better. The Festival welcomes runners of all abilities from Olympians and internationals (and there have been many over the years) to fun runners – the only proviso being a generous cut-off of 38 minutes at the 5km point of the 10km race. There is a team element to all the races and the Festival as a whole, with cash prizes up for grabs for the successful men’s and women’s teams as well as for the best individual runners in several categories. The social side of the Festival has become as legendary as the running over the years, and every year old friendships are renewed and new ones made.

PHOTOGRAPH’S – From time to time we have photographs of our members taken at meetings or presentations which we would like to use both on the website or incorporated within our report to our local newspaper. FACEBOOK – Photographs can be found on the SBH page.
CAN YOU HELP PLEASE– I would welcome any contributions From Yourselves, any impending marriages, or additions to the family, any running or competing incidents, also past warm weather training/holidays (No Club 24 please). Currently the response has been excellent, but if you have anything that could make it into next week’s Newsletter – please email me.
CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION – Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.
On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.
