DARYLL NEITA LAUNCHES KIDS’ SCHEME – Featured in Athletics Weekly in which DARYLL has unveiled a campaign to increase the activity of primary schoolchildren.

DARYLL who is the current Olympic and World sprint relay medallist visited Beatrix Potter Primary School in Wandsworth last week to launch Active Kids Do Better – a Nike and Discovery Education programme, developed with support from John Moores University, to help teachers increase movement and play throughout the school day.
Research has shown that fewer than one in four young children in the UK get recommended amount of exercise, but the Active Kids Do Better programme offers free resources, games and activities to all UK Primary Schools with teachers able to sign up at activekidsdobetter.co.uk online.
Beatrix Potter Primary School is one of the first schools to join the programme and on visiting the school DARYLL said: “It’s amazing to see kids of all ages and abilities having fun and enjoying being more active. It’s so important for health and well-being and even small bite-size chunks of exercise can make a massive difference.”

ROSEMARY BOWSHER, Year 5 teacher at the school, said “The children were very excited to welcome an Olympic medallist to our school! We’re proud to be one of the first schools to sign up, and it was great to be able to show DARYLL how we’re encouraging our pupils to be more active. As a busy teacher, it’s sometimes difficult to find time for fun physical activity out of PE lessons. This programme makes it quick and easy and has given me confidence to build movement into our daily routine.”
Schools will benefit from a raft of resources linked to key areas of the National Curriculum, enabling teachers to introduce quick movement into otherwise sedentary lessons. They include “spell check” – a hopscotch-style playground game – and “clock lunges” – a quick classroom activity to help children get out of their seats while they learn to tell the time.

START FITNESS METROPOLITAN LEAGUE – The final fixture took place last Saturday at Trent Park, with the weather being overcast and the conditions underfoot quite heavy.

Congratulations to all on an excellent season, especially seeing many of our recent new members making their presence felt.

On the day GIANLEO STUBBS U11 made it a clean sweep winning all 5 of the fixtures, he was ably backed all season by THOMAS CADWALLADER, ANDONI AMPHLETT and JAMES BYRNES winning the team result, which meant they are the Under 11 League Champions by a clear 58 points.

Under 11 Girls Team – With ever present EVIE REDPATH and OLIVE HARVEY-DEW finished their highest position of the season in 3rd place, with 9 Girls running of which 4 where recent new members. Their final position of 8th is largely to the first fixture at Claybury where we had no runners, but next season should see the Girls fighting for top honours.

Under 13 Boys Team – Have been consistent all season led by SAMUEL GREENSTEIN and THEO BODEN the team packed well to take 2nd place behind the eventual League winners Woodford Green with Essex Ladies. By beating Herts Phoenix we managed to move above them and become League runners-up.

Under 13 Girls Team – Had a not to good start in which it was hard to recovers, the team had 3 ever presents REBECCA JEFFERY, ANNA MURPHY and LOUISA STAAB finished 6th on Saturday and 6th in the final League tables. At Wormwood Scrubs AIMI WEIGHTMAN ran her only appearance of the season, and won by a considerable distance.

Under 15 Boys/Under 17 Men’s Team – Had a consistent season, and at Uxbridge just before Christmas we came away in 2nd place with 13 runners toeing the line, THOMAS PATRICK won a close race by 5 seconds. We were just short of numbers at Wormwood Scrubs which meant the team finished the season in 3rd place. There were 3 ever-presents JOSEPH HEATHER, DYLAN HEPWORTH and BEN KELLY.

Under 15 Girls/Under 17 Women’s Team – Were awesome throughout the season, and from the first fixture at Claybury they applied the pressure on the 4 remaining fixtures, and become League champions by some 192 points. GRACE INGLES and LIA RADUS had 2 wins, also LIDIA KYRIACOU and SOPHIA STAAB each had a win. There were 2 ever-presents ELENA RONCARATI and SOPHIA STAAB and at Uxbridge we had 15 runners.

Senior Men’s Team – Although we had many excellent performances, but due to lack of numbers you get punished team wise, and they finished in 6th place overall. Individually RICHARD GOODMAN won 3 races and was 2nd on Saturday, securing the 1st prize of top Individual. Also THOMAS BUTLER has been equally impressive by winning the Under 20 title, and finished 5th on Saturday. THOMAS and PHILIP CUNNINGHAM were the only ever-presents.

Senior Women’s Team – Suffered with lack of numbers and finished in 10th place overall. Individually NAOMI TASCHIMOWITZ won 1 race and was 3rd in her next race, VICTORIA PRITCHARD has a 2nd and 3rd place.

“The Athletics World Cup London 2018 will be one of the biggest athletics events in 2018 and as such we’re thrilled to be able to launch it at the London Stadium,” said Richard Bowker CBE, chair of UK Athletics. “This is world-class competition where nation will face nation and fans will see an amazing feast of athletics over two days featuring many of the biggest global superstars in the world of sport.
“This will be an incredible event which we are thrilled to be able to launch on the back of a highly-successful World Championships last summer.”
IAAF president SEBASTIAN COE said: “This is one of the exciting innovative events we are seeing in our sport and our thanks go to British Athletics and the Mayor of London for creating it and hosting it.

SOUTHERN CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPSTook place in Stanmer Park, Brighton on 27 January
A reasonable day on the South Coast with top honours going to JEREMY DEMPSEY U20 who unfortunately had a fall during the race, and just failed to win the Gold Medal by 2 seconds. LONDON TO BRIGHTON ROAD RELAY The first race for runners (who were mainly professionals) was on the 30 January 1837, and the winner covered the 53 miles in 8 hours 37 minutes. Various races followed until 1951, when the first relay race for amateur runners was held, covering 53 miles 566 yards. The race was run every year until 1964, and was cancelled in 1965 due to traffic problems. The race has been run since then, but as a race for individual runners until 2005. In 2005 the Road Runners Club made a decision not to hold the race, and the main factor was the ever increasing traffic. Since 2009 “Extreme Running” now organise a version of the race, which starts from Blackheath, then through Kent, Surrey and on to Brighton.

Shaftesbury had been ever present since 1951, and on October 1962 the team were ready. We had a Shaftesbury coach which carried the supporters, and followed the race to Brighton, stopping at various points to cheer on the runners – Report of the 10 October 1964 race;
