SOUTHERN CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPSTook place in Stanmer Park, Brighton on 27 January
A reasonable day on the South Coast with top honours going to JEREMY DEMPSEY U20 who unfortunately had a fall during the race, and just failed to win the Gold Medal by 2 seconds. Other outstanding performances came from AIMI WEIGHTMAN U13 4th, RICHARD HORTON SM 4th, DAVID STONE U17 5th, GEORGE GROOM U20 6th, THOMAS BUTLER U20 7th, NAOMI TASCHIMOWITZ SW 8th and GRACE INGLES U15 13th.

Which brings me onto a very disappointing situation, where we only closed out 2 teams out of the 10 races on the day. The Team Managers have reported that a large percentage of drop-outs occurred on the Friday night before the Championships and some on Thursday night, albeit 2 or 3 had a bug or cold, but other reasons included too tired after running the Middlesex Schools on Thursday, decided to concentrate on schoolwork and some felt they were not ready to race.

LONDON TO BRIGHTON ROAD RELAY The first race for runners (who were mainly professionals) was on the 30 January 1837, and the winner covered the 53 miles in 8 hours 37 minutes. Various races followed until 1951, when the first relay race for amateur runners was held, covering 53 miles 566 yards. The race was run every year until 1964, and was cancelled in 1965 due to traffic problems. The race has been run since then, but as a race for individual runners until 2005. In 2005 the Road Runners Club made a decision not to hold the race, and the main factor was the ever increasing traffic. Since 2009 “Extreme Running” now organise a version of the race, which starts from Blackheath, then through Kent, Surrey and on to Brighton.

Shaftesbury had been ever present since 1951, and on October 1962 the team were ready. We had a Shaftesbury coach which carried the supporters, and followed the race to Brighton, stopping at various points to cheer on the runners – Report of the 10 October 1964 race;
