JAZZ SEARS MAKING GREAT STRIDES – The following was published in Athletics Weekly recently.
JAZZ and her coach CRAIG ANDREW. Are they a match made in heaven? In the athletics sense, the answer is yes, definitely!
During a relatively short time – since the summer of 2016 – JAZZ has made herself one of Britain’s best young triple jumpers and CRAIG has coached her every step of the way.
JAZZ was previously successful in other events and indeed has won numerous county championships in Bedfordshire at long jump, high jump and sprinting. She switched to triple jumping after terming up with CRAIG. “It was his idea,” she recalls.
CRAIG recognised his new athlete’s potential in simple terms. “I could see how she could bound” says the sports rehabilitation graduate.
Clearly CRAIG had foresight – in only her third triple jump contest JAZZ won the 2016 England under-15 title with the best UK performance in the age-group for that year. Subsequent victories include the 2017 SIAB international. “It was my first time going off the 11 metres board,” she remembers – and, this year the England indoor championships with a PB, at the time, of 12.34m which improved (from 12.23m) the under-17 UK indoor all-time record JAZZ had herself set in January.
Even then JAZZ wasn’t finished, for in early March she beat her record once more with a 12.37m in a Windsor open meeting. To reach such heights obviously requires committed training and workload reflects this, with plyometrics, sprints and gym work among the sessions. There is also hill running, although more than one member of the training squad wryly refers to this as a death session!
Nevertheless, says JAZZ, most of the sessions are fun. “And CRAIG is an easy guy to get on with,” she insists.
A decent gymnast before she switched to athletics, JAZZ has high hopes of qualifying for the European Under-18 Championships this year and again being a regular in domestic circles, but what improvements does she need to make? “My leg shoot is perhaps the weakest phase of my jumping,” the 16 year-old says. “So I have to think of improving on that by bettering my flexibility.”
Quick sprinting times could help, too, though her coach doesn’t see a lack of speed as an obvious weakness. “Her 60m and 100m times don’t reflect just how quickly JAZZ moves on the runway,” says CRAIG.
Besides that, JAZZ has some fast training partners to help her in that direction. Among them is KIERRA GRANT, a 60m winner at the London Indoor Games this winter as well as being the Bedfordshire Under-17 long jump champion. She and JAZZ are childhood friends and both, previous with Luton AC, are now members of Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers.
Finally, the affable JAZZ has a message for other hopeful young athletes. “Trust the process and your ability to succeed,” she says. “With patience and determination you will achieve what you set out to do. You may encounter hurdles on the way, but they only make you a better athlete for it.”
