2018 LONDON MINI MARATHON – NATASHA TANNER U15 has been selected to run for for the Borough of Enfield and LUISA STAAB U13 for the Borough of Camden.

COMMONWEALTH GAMES PREVIEW – I watched the opening ceremony on a huge screen on Broadbeach beach, and as they say it was a ripper. The following day Thursday 5 April featured the Triathlon, which meant leaving the Hotel at 7.15am, getting the local bus to Broadbeach South, then a tram to Southport.  The Women’s race featured BETH POTTER (Scotland) and started at 9.30am with the 750m swim in calm waters, England’s JESSICA LEARMOUTH exiting the water first in (9.04 minutes) followed by the eventual winner FLORA DUFFY of Bermuda, BETH time was (9.50) and there were 8 athletes within 3 seconds of her. On the 20k bike leg BETH got detached from the group and finished in 12th place (31.28), there was quit a gap in front BETH as she set of on the 5k run, and she ran the 6th fastest time (17.24) to finish in 12th place (59.50). Apologies as the photo of BETH is a bit far away, everyone thought they would go out on one side of the road, and back on the other side. Nope the bikes went out and back this side, and the run on the other side.

The return journey featured a massive queue at the Tram station, but everybody was happy and in no time, we boarded the tram. The tram system was built 2 years and most of the tracks run parallel with the cars and as you can see by the photo they are very smooth and comfortable with a rather smart paint job.

Friday 6 April was a rest day and relaxed at Surfers Paradise, which is aptly named, this is also where the Games free events take place on the beach stage. Photo’s speak for themselves.

Saturday 7 April was slightly more hectic as we visited Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. I actually signed up to new SBH members, the first guy could be an offial and the second would probably challen ge DAN BRAMBLE’S club long jump record. Also as Southport was the Triathlon Relays for Mixed Teams, with BETH POTTER on Leg 1 for (Scotland) and this time the swim was 250m and BETH came out 7th (3.25), the bike Leg was 7km (11.13) and the run was 1500m (5.08) with BETH handing over in 7th place, which was their final placing.

When we got back JADE LALLY had sent some photograph’s. JADE told me he preparations have been OK, back injury has not gone away, just hope for the best in a few days time.

Photographs show JADE at home in the village, next a perspective JADE will see when she steps into the circle on Tuesday, finally that good old Aussie greeting.

Sunday 8 April Started as 10am with the Hammer Final with DEMPSEY MCGUIGAN (Northern Ireland) having one of his best competition series to finish in 6th place (SB 70.24m), his second best throw ever, his other 5 throws were between 67m to 68m, and is ranked UK No.7 in 2018. CHRIS BENNETT (Scotland)  was a shade under par, threw (65.22m) with his opening throw and with his 3rd attempt he put in an impressive threw only to have fouled to finish in 10th place.
Later in the afternoon SAM DAWKINS (Jersey) in his first major championships was drawn in Heat 1, the race started very quickly and in the final 100m SAM gritted his teeth fo finish 6th in a personal best (47.23) taking .08 of a second off his 2017 time, and ranks him UK N0.8 in 2018.

Monday 9 April – The morning session opened with the High Jump, Pool A featured DAVID SMITH (Scotland) who was had a near perfect qualification and cleared a seasons best (2.21m) qualifying for the final, which ranks him UK No.3 in 2008. In Pool B ALLAN SMITH (Scotland) also qualified for the final with a seasons best (2.21m) although he gave me the shivers at (2.18m) when he cleared the height impressively at his third attempt. He is also ranked UK No.3 in 2008.
The evening session had BETH POTTER(Scotland)  in the 10000m, and was sitting at the back of the pack, with 11 laps to go BETH got detached and eventually finished 18th (33:26.78). The exertions of completing 2 Triathlons in the previous 4 days must have taken its toll. Picture of BETH is a bit far away (sorry).

Tuesday 10 April – The morning session included 3 of our Stripes, firstly in the 800m KYLE LANGFORD (England) was drawn in Heat 1 Lane 8, and at the 100m break KYLE took up his customary position towards the back of the pack. with 300m to go moved up to 4th position, then in the home straight produced that customary burst of speed to ease past the line in 2nd place in a seasons best (1:45.61) his 3rd fastest time ever, ranking him UK no.2 in 2018. Next SAM DAWKINS (Jersey) following his excellent 400m run took on the 200m, drawn in Heat 3 Lane 6 SAM produced in what was a close finish a personal best (21.91 w-1.4) for 6th place, which is a Jersey National Record. In the final Heat 9 ZHARNEL HUGHES U23 came out looking extremely relaxed, and from his excellent start hit the home straight with a 5m lead, and won the race in a quick (20.34 w-0.4). Finally DAN BRAMBLE opened his qualifying round in Pool A of the Long Jump, and his session was over before it had hardly started, achieving the qualifying mark of 8m with his 2nd jump. Jumping a seasons best (8.02m w1.3) ranking him UK No.2 in 2018. Photographs of KYLE LANGFORD (4th place), SAM DAWKINS (all red) and ZHARNEL HUGHES (Lane 1), sorry DAN but on both of your jumps someone stood up at that precise moment, will get you in the Final.

Wednesday 11 April – Was jan evening session only and first up was the High Jump. ALLAN SMITH had an excellent competition to finish in fifth place with a seasons best (2.27m), which was his best since 2015 ranking him UK No.2, he cleared (2.21m) at his 3rd attempt and had 3 good attempts at (2.30m). DAVID SMITH finished in 10th place with (2.18m) just failing to clear his qualification height of (2.21m). Next in the Long Jump DAN BRAMBLE finished in 5th place with (7.94m w0.1) and would have needed a personal best to get a medal. Finally ZHARNEL HUGHES produce another dominating run to win Heat 2 of the 200m Semi-Final (20.37), from the gun ZHARNEL led the field, then in the home straight had a comfortable lead to cross the line easy up. It is looking promising for tomorrow’s nights Final.

NORTH LONDON AQUATICS CENTRE – Dear Lovely Supporters – We are so sorry that we’ve not been in touch. Our exciting project of building a new deep water pool takes up all of our spare time and we are just slowing down to take a little break this weekend and so a chance to fill you in.
There is so much to tell you, but we’ll try to keep it brief!

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November last year “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.
