CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November last year “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

IAAF RELEASES IN-DEPTH BIOMECHANIC RESEARCH ON INDOOR ATHLETICS – The following article was recently posted on the Athletics Weekly website.
The study involves analysis of 161 athletes across 13 events at the 2018 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Birmingham

After 12 months of analysis, 13 in-depth reports have been published by the IAAF to provide further insight into the performances of athletes at the 2018 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Birmingham.
A total of 28 high-speed cameras captured more than 650 video files to enable the performances of 161 athletes across the 13 events to be analysed in “forensic detail”.
The biomechanics reports are available to download here, with the findings discussed by lead researcher DR ATHANASSIOS BISSAS, head of biomechanics at the Leeds Beckett University Carnegie School of Sport, on Friday in Birmingham, where he was joined by DR BRIAN HANLEY, Olympic and world pole vault champion KATERINA STEFANDI and her coach MITCHEL KREIR.
Research highlights include advanced analysis of the approach phase during the pole vault competitions, with the study revealing that the fastest pole plant speed among all the female finalists at the World Indoors in Birmingham was STEFANIDI’S as she topped 31km/h.
Giving insight into the stages of each vault, the 29-year-old added: “I know almost the second I take off whether I’ll make the bar or not.”
Other highlights of the research include:

  • Detailed insight into the first 10m of the 60m finals, which reveals that five of the six medals were decided within the first 10m. Only MARIE-JOSEE TA LOU claimed a medal (silver) after being outside the top three at the 10m mark.
  • Measurements of the sprinters’ exit times from the starting blocks which reveal that the average time was identical for male and female sprinters (0.5 seconds).
  • Unprecedented analysis of the men’s high jump by dissecting the performance into 31 different biomechanical variables.

The study, undertaken in partnership with Leeds Beckett University, follows an initial, larger project conducted during the IAAF World Championships London 2017.
DR BISSAS said the London study had been exceptionally well-received around the world and he expected this study would have similar resonance with the athletics community.
“We have again deployed three-dimensional motion techniques to analyse key events, building upon what we learned in London 2017,” he said. “We have refined these techniques and the data captured illustrates what we can learn when science is applied. It is fascinating and remarkable at the same time. We believe our findings will again excite the athletics community.”
IAAF president SEBASTIAN COE added: “These biomechanics studies have given us all a fresh and fascinating insight into the extraordinary performances of our athletes, and reflect the IAAF’s drive towards innovation and technology that can help us to showcase athletics in new and exciting ways for all our followers.
“I’m sure coaches the world over will be examining these reports closely for knowledge they can use to enhance their training programmes and develop their athletes.
“I commend the IAAF Development Department and the team at Leeds Beckett University for their exceptional work in producing both the Birmingham 2018 and London 2017 reports, which have contributed significantly to our understanding of high performance.”

GLASGOW 2019 MEDALS UNVEILED – The following article was recently posted on the Athletics Weekly website.
Drawing inspiration from Glasgow and the built environment, ANDREW FLEMING’S design of the European Indoor Championships medals is a representation of the city’s heritage of construction

Organisers of the European Athletics Indoor Championships Glasgow 2019 have revealed the event’s official medals, designed by Glasgow School of Art resident designer ANDREW FLEMING. Drawing inspiration from Glasgow and the built environment, the design of the medals is a representation of Glasgow’s heritage of construction. The overlapping grid like patterns have been used to create a sense of movement as an abstract snapshot of the city itself. FLEMING wanted every winning athlete, competing at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena between March 1-3, to have their own key to the city. “I am incredibly proud to have been selected to design the medals for this event,” he said. “To be given the opportunity to design a medal for the city I love so much is an honour. “Designing and making is what I love and for that to be recognised in this way and to be given this platform at this early stage in my career is more than I could have imagined. “To mark this moment in time of these athletes’ careers has been such a fulfilling experience and I can’t wait to see them being presented on the podium”.

Among those hoping to walk away from the championships with at least one of the medals will be Scotland’s LAURA MUIR with the double European indoor champion having recently confirmed her intention to defend both her 1500m and 3000m titles on home soil.

CHERRY ALEXANDER, major events director at British Athletics and sport director for Glasgow 2019, said: “With just two weeks to go, the excitement is really building for the European Athletics Indoor Championships Glasgow 2019! “It’s fantastic to be at this exciting point in the lead up to the event with the medal reveal. “They are a brilliant ode to the city of Glasgow and it will be great to see winning athletes from all over Europe wearing these medals after a hard-fought victory on the athletics track.”

SBH SUMMER 2019 TRACK AND FIELD FIXTURE CARD – The fixture card is almost complete, except the following which requires clarification – All the Southern Championships dates are fixed but the SEAA have still to confirm the venues – The four Monday evening Veterans Meeting in which you can compete with Barnet and District as a 2nd claim member, we require the dates and venues – Finally the Hertfordshire Schools on the 8 June, the venue has still to be decided.

Link to the Fixture Card which you can download and save/print – Summer 2019 Fixture Card Issued For Information 28-01-19

Link to the Front Sheet of the Fixture Card, which gives various information including details of your respective Team Manager, please download and save/print – Summer 2019 Fixture Card Front Sheet Issued For Information 28-01-19

The Fixture Card will be issued separately by e-mail when complete, around the end of February. Additional information will be available, including any changes, travel and timetables will be published in the SBH weekly newsletter. But you first priority is to keep your respective Team Manager advised on your availability as soon as possible. Because of the strength in depth we currently enjoy, especially in the Young Athletes age-groups, not all athletes can be selected for the team. But in the Eastern Young Athletes League they have numerous non-scoring races, therefore why not take the opportunity of taking part as a member of the team. One thing you need to take note of is the EYAL Team Managers have to put the declaration in on the Friday before that week-ends fixture, which has to include any of our non-scoring athletes.
The Middlesex League has restricted non-scoring events so please contact your Team Manager.
