Regretfully after discussions between the host club, Enfield Council and other parties we have decided to cancel tomorrow’s (Saturday 19th February) race due to be held at Trent Park. Not a decision we have taken lightly but is for the safety of all. As we are unable to reschedule the points after Race 4 is will stand as the final results.

PARKING/TRAVEL DETAILS FOR THE NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP AT PARLIAMENT HILL THIS SATURDAY 26 FEBRUARY
Parking – There are two public car parks, available for general use, one is at the bottom of East Heath Rd (approx. NW3 1BP) and the other is at Jack Straws Castle, (NW3 7ES) at the top of the East Heath Rd. They both hold a maximum of 200 cars. Side roads around Parliament Hill Fields are busy and in general residents parking only, with fines for non-residents so to help you we list various routes and ways to get you to the venue.
Cars from the Midlands and North – Drivers are advised that they should park away from Parliament Hill (PH) and take public transport to PH. Below suggests parking near to Brent Cross, London Transport Station, either on the side roads at the Station or in the nearby Shopping Centre.
Directions: Approach London via the M1. Turn on to the A406, North Circular Rd going east. Follow this a short way and then bear left and follow signs A41 (Central London). Under the Brent Cross flyover proceed to A41, just before joining the A41 take the second turning left into Highfield Rd. Brent Cross Station on the Northern Line is on the left and street parking is allowed in the area. Take the train to Belsize Park and Parliament Hill is about 1 mile walk away. Allow time for this.
Cars from South and West – Again, drivers are advised to park away from PH and take the London Overground Service to Gospel Oak which is less than 400m from the venue.
Directions: On arriving on the outskirts of London get onto the M3 and continue until it merges with the A316 and proceed past Twickenham Rugby ground on the left. Continue until Old Deer Park is reached and opposite the Park there is a pay and display car park where vehicles can be left all day. The Richmond Station is about 400m away and trains go to Gospel Oak every 20mins. The journey to Gospel Oak takes about 30mins.
Cars from the South East and East – Clubs from these areas have been attending the Southern Championships at PH for many years and know the parking situation. The advice is to park away and use public transport. Kentish Town Station is only a 15-minute walk from the venue, while Gospel Oak can be reached from North Woolwich and many other Stations on the route.
Public Transport into London – If you are travelling to Kings Cross or Euston, you can get to PH via Bus or Underground Train. The 214 Bus route goes from Kings Cross Stn to Highgate Rd, near Parliament Hill every 10mins, this journey takes about 30mins. Other bus routes stopping at Highgate Rd include the C2, Liverpool St to Parliament Hill and the C11 which comes from Brent Cross where there a large Shopping Centre and Car Parking. Underground Stations within walking distance of PH are Tufnell Park less than a mile away and Belsize Park about 1 mile walking distance. These are both on the Northern Line and can be got to from any of the main RW Stations in London. Club Tents will be allowed to be erected by the Bandstand at PH, drop off for these will be at the Highgate Rd entrance, NO cars will be allowed on site. The Registration Marquee is along the path from the Highgate Rd entrance and the Club Tent area.

Five athletes already have the standard for the World Indoor Championships while a further nine are within 0.05 of the time and could be a factor if they make what is bound to be a keenly contested battle to be Britain’s fastest man of the winter. Defending champion ROBERTSON (who also won in 2017 and has been runner-up three times) is the favourite in terms of experience but Charlie Dobson (who edged him in the Müller Indoor Grand Prix), JEREMIAH AZU and ADAM THOMAS are in PB form and have run similar times and will also be eyeing a Belgrade place.
World under-20 200m champion JONA EFOLOKO is another going in the right direction and has run (6.65) this winter.

Men’s 200m (world qualifier: n/a) – CBP: JULIAN GOLDING (20.46) 1998 – Defending champion (2020): ANDREW MORGAN-HARRISON (21.20) – Most wins: LINFORD CHRISTIE 6
UK lead: TOBY MAKOYAWO (20.73)

As the event is not being contested in the World Indoors the quality won’t compare with the 60m. Defending champion ANDREW MORGAN-HARRISON is not entered but his younger brother DAVID is and has an outside medal shot. The other medallists from 2020 – NICHOLAS PRYCE and BEN SMITH – return though Northern champion JOE FERGUSON may start as marginal favourite.

Men’s 400m (world qualifier:46.50) – CBP: SOLOMON WARISO (45.71) 1998 – Defending champion (2020): JAMES WILLIAMS (47.24) – Most wins: NIGEL LEVINE 6 – UK lead: EDWARD FAULDS (46.16)

The European under-20 champion EDWARD FAULDS broke the European indoor under-20 record at the Müller Indoor Grand Prix and his (46.16) was also a world qualifier and gives him a full second superiority on fellow Brits on 2021 times. Based on the rankings, BEN HIGGINS has the next best time with (47.16). CHRIS MCALISTER is only ranked 23rd but Britain’s fastest 400m hurdler of 2021 could show big improvement at the event.

Men’s 800m (world qualifier: 1:46.70) – CBP: TOM MCKEAN (1:46.49) 1990 – Defending champion (2020): GUY LEARMONTH (1:46.89) – Most wins: MARTIN STEELE 4 – UK lead: ELLIOT GILES (1:45.42)

British record-holder ELLIOT GILES dominates on times in 2022 too even if he is nearly two seconds down on his stunning 2021 run at Torun but he is also entered in the 1500m.
Remarkably GILES ran (1:45.42) at both his Birmingham second and winning in Torun a few days later. Defending champion GUY LEARMONTH and Commonwealth medallist KYLE LANGFORD also have the world qualifying mark this winter and Learmonth especially should be competitive based on his good run in Birmingham last weekend. TOM RANDOLPH has a modest (1:48.11) indoor PB but based on his European under-23 bronze medal and a (1:44.98) outdoor PB, he will run the leaders close. 1500m world finalists CHARLIE DA’VALL GRICE and NEIL GOURLEY are also entered and could be medal factors.

Men’s 1500m (world qualifier: 3:39.00) – CBP: EDDIE KING (3:40.24) 1999 – Defending champion (2020): GEORGE MILLS (3:50.69) – Most wins: JOHN WHETTON 6 – UK lead: NEIL GOURLEY (3:35.32)

Six athletes have the qualifier this winter and all bar Olympic 1500m medallist JOSH KERR are entered. Judging by past championships – no one has ever run sub-3:40 – it’s likely to be tactical.
Reigning champion GEORGE MILLS led the way in the Müller Indoor Grand Prix (3:36.03) and could potentially be up against past champions GRICE, GILES and GOURLEY who also have the qualifying mark. PIERS COPELAND was just behind MILLS in Birmingham last Saturday with his (3:36.12) indoor PB and he did win the indoor trial race last year and he has great range having run a 48 400m and sub-8:00 3000m in 2021. ARCHIE DAVIS could be another factor – he was second ahead of MILLS in last year’s trials race and has run (3:40.28) this winter.

Men’s 3000m (world qualifier: 7:50.00) – CBP: DAVID LEWIS (7:49.61) 1986 – Defending champion (2020): JONATHAN DAVIES (8:07.96) – Most wins: IAN STEWART, IAN MCAFFERTY, RAY SMEDLEY, MO FARAH, LEE EMANUEL 3 – UK lead: ANDREW BUCHART (7:37.42)

UK leader ANDREW BUCHART isn’t entered but European 5000m record-setter MARC SCOTT is due to run, as is in-form TOM MORTIMER, Olympic steeplechaser ZAK SEDDON and (3:34) 1500m runner JAMES WEST, who has produced a (7:44) earlier in the month. Remarkably a dozen British men have beaten the world standard this winter but only MORTIMER, WEST and JAMAINE COLEMAN are entered of those. JACK ROWE has yet to run indoors this winter but in 2021 made the European Indoor final and ran (7:42.15) in the summer so can’t be discounted. Other interesting entries are UK under-20 record-setter OSIAN PERRIN and teenager HENRY MCLUCKIE. Also watch for (3:36) 1500m runner JOSHUA LAY even though his 3000m PB is only (9:54.61) set at the age of 14!

Men’s 60m hurdles (world qualifier: 7.72) – CBP: COLIN JACKSON (7.43) 1990 – Defending champion (2020): DAVID KING (7.78) – Most wins: COLIN JACKSON 7 – UK lead: ANDREW POZZI (7.59)

The reigning world champion ANDREW POZZI is a clear favourite but fellow Olympian DAVID KING, who is going for his third successive title, was only 0.04 back in the Müller Indoor Grand Prix with his own (7.63) PB. The 37-year-old multiple world outdoor finalist WILL SHARMAN, who tied for first with POZZI in 2014, is due to make his 2022 debut here.

 Men’s high jump (world qualifier: 2.34) – CBP: ROBBIE GRABARZ/TOM PARSONS (2.31) 2011/2013 – Defending champion (2020): TOM GALE (2.27) – Most wins: GEOFF PARSONS 5 – UK lead: DAVID SMITH (2.22)

There is a huge gap between the UK lead and the always tough field world qualifying which is way in excess of the championships best but it will still be a good battle for the UK title. With reigning champion TOM GALE absent, UK leader DAVID SMITH, who was second in 2020, is a clear favourite.

Men’s pole vault (world qualifier: 5.81) – CBP: STEVE LEWIS/ADAM HAQUE (5.65) 2009/2018 – Defending champion (2020): ADAM HAQUE (5.55) – Most wins: MIKE BULL 8 – UK lead: HARRY COPPELL (5.54)

Former world under-18 champion and reigning UK outdoor champion HARRY COPPELL only has two silver and a bronze from his past indoor championships and will be up against defending champion ADAM HAQUE who joint holds the championship best and 2019 winner CHARLIE MYERS. Again the world indoor qualifying mark is way above the championship record.

Men’s long jump (world qualifier: 8.22) – CBP: STEWART FAULKNER (8.03) 1990 – Defending champion (2020): DAN BRAMBLE (7.81) – Most wins: CHRIS TOMLINSON 6 – UK lead: JACK ROACH (7.66)

It’s not been a classic year for British long jumping with UK leader JACK ROACH a marginal favourite among a small field which sees none of the 2020 medallists return. The 2019 runner-up JAMES LELLIOTT has yet to show his best form this winter. An interesting entry is multi jumps talent DOMINIC OGBECHIE, who also goes in the high jump.

Men’s triple jump (world qualifier: 17.10) – CBP: PHILLIPS IDOWU (17.30) 2005 – Defending champion (2020): MICHAEL PUPLAMPU (16.21) – Most wins: TOSIN OKE (NGR) 6 – UK lead: MONTEL NEVERS (15.81)

The UK triple jump scene has also not come alive this season with no one near 16 metres. However, there are three past champions with 17-metre bests entered. Tokyo Olympic competitor and former world youth champion BEN WILLIAMS, who won the title way back in 2011, has only jumped a modest (13.99) this year but did win the 2019 British outdoor championships with a (17.27). NATHAN DOUGLAS, with a (17.64) PB first won this title in 2006, hits 40 later this year. He first jumped 16 metres in 2003 and managed a windy (16.20) last year and is still a medal challenger. Former European medallist JULIAN REID has yet to compete in 2022.

Men’s shot (world qualifier: 21.10) – CBP: GARRETT JOHNSON (USA) (20.66) 2008 – Defending champion (2020): SCOTT LINCOLN (19.49) – Most wins: MIKE WINCH 7 – UK lead: SCOTT LINCOLN (20.73)

SCOTT LINCOLN has a two-metre advantage at the top of the rankings and will be a huge favourite as he goes for a sixth successive title with an eye on the championships best of (20.66) considering he has thrown further this winter.

Men’s heptathlon (world qualifier: n/a) – CBP: ALEX KRUGER (5888) 1993 – Defending champion (2020): ANDREW MURPHY (5606) – Most wins: JOHN HEANLEY 3 – UK lead: LEWSIS CHURCH (5482)

The England title in January was a close affair with just 83 points between LEWSIS CHURCH, HARRY KENDALL and HARRY MASLEN and the trio are all entered.

Men’s 3000m walk (world qualifier: n/a) – CBP: TOM BOSWORTH (10:58.21) 2016 – Defending champion (2020): (5000mW): TOM BOSWORTH (18:20.97) – Most wins: TOM BOSWORTH 6 – UK lead: TOM PARTINGTON (12:59.01)

With a disappointing four competitors the event switches back from a 5000m walk which was held between 2017 and 2020. CHRIS SNOOK, who recently won the England 10km road walk title, looks the likely favourite based on his (12:03.14) outdoor PB.

Women’s 60m (world qualifier: 7.30) – CBP: ASHA PHILIP (7.09) 2014 – Defending champion (2020): AMY HUNT (7.39) – Most wins: BEV KINCH, JOICE MADUAKA, ASHA PHILIP 6 – UK lead: DARYLL NEITA (7.11)

ASHA PHILIP chases a record seventh title but not having yet competed in 2022 will be up against it with fellow Olympic relay medallist DARYLL NEITA clearly in great shape after a (7.11) PB. Former BUCS winner CHEYANNE EVANS-GRAY should challenge for a medal based on here recent (7.22) PB.
Reigning champion AMY HUNT pulled up injured in the Müller Indoor Grand Prix Birmingham.

Women’s 200m (world qualifier: n/a) – CBP: MERLENE OTTEY (JAM) (23.07) 1990 – Defending champion (2020): AMI PIPI (23.23) – Most wins: CIARA SHEEHY (IRL) and JOICE MADUAKA 3
UK lead: AMBER ANNING (23.23)

With this event not contested in Belgrade, the entry is low. The 2020 runner-up JAZMINE MOSS is the fastest entry on 2022 times with a (23.94) this winter.

Women’s 400m (world qualifier: 52.90) – CBP: NICOLA SANDERS (50.60) 2007 – Defending champion (2020): JESSIE KNIGHT (52.76) – Most wins: VERONA ELDER 8 – UK lead: AMI PIPI (52.02)

Defending champion JESSIE KNIGHT will be hard to beat but this is one of the best races on paper of the weekend. Also entered are reigning 200m champion and 400m Olympian AMI PIPI who won her opening 400m race in Mondeville and then improved to an UK lead (52.02) in Torun. Another to watch is European Team Championships 400m hurdles winner LINA NIELSEN. HANNAH WILLIAMS, sister of Olympic finalist JODIE, ran (51.60) last summer and should also challenge. But many eyes will be on KEELY HODGKINSON after her stunning British 800m record in Birmingham last weekend. The Olympic silver medallist has never raced 400m indoors before but based on her (52.61) last summer, she is capable of battling for a medal.

Women’s 800m (world qualifier: 2:01.50) – CBP: JO MERSH (1:59.74) 2003 – Defending champion (2020): KEELY HODGKINSON (2:04.37) – Most wins: JENNY MEADOWS 7 – UK lead: KEELY HODGKINSON (1:57.20)

Defending champion and UK record-holder HODGKINSON does not need to compete here for selection but there is still a quality field headed by Olympic fourth-placer JEMMA REEKIE who lost her UK record last week. In-form ISSY BOFFEY beat REEKIE in winning the Müller Indoor Grand Prix 1000m but the Scot is likely to run a more conservative race here. JENNY SELMAN has the world qualifier this winter with a (2:00.70) and will also be in the medal mix.

Women’s 1500m (world qualifier: 4:09.00) – CBP: ZOLA BUDD (4:06.87) 1986 – Defending champion (2020): HOLLY ARCHER (4:21.99) – Most wins: HAYLEY PARKINSON-OVENS/MARY STEWART 3 – UK lead: AMY-ELOISE MARKOVC (4:08.68)

REEKIE is also entered here though she has yet to run a 1500m this winter and only run two in 2021 but will start favourite if she competes here. Also in the field are Olympian REVEE WALCOTT-NOLAN and ADELLE TRACEY, who though both previously more used to 800m racing have (4:06) outdoor bests. European indoor medallist and reigning champion HOLLY ARCHER is also entered but has not shown her best form thus far in 2022 unlike European under-23 medallist ERIN WALLACE who ran a PB and world qualifier (4:08.90) at Birmingham last week.

Women’s 3000m (world qualifier: 8:49.00) – CBP: JO PAVEY (8:43.23) 2004 – Defending champion (2020): MELISSA COURTNEY-BRYANT (9:48.54) – Most wins: 9 athletes (HELEN CLITHEROE, SUSAN MCGEORGE, LISA DOBRISKEY, ZARA HYDE PETERS, THELMA BATEMAN, MARY STEWART, ANGELA DAVIES, JO PAVEY, LAURA MUIR) – UK lead: AMY-ELOISE MARKOVC (8:44.15)

European indoor champion AMY-ELOISE MARKOVC is the big favourite being the world leader and having run a fast 1500m PB at Birmingham. Also entered are European indoor finalist AMELIA QUIRK while ARCHER and WALCOTT-NOLAN have this as an alternative to the 1500m.

Women’s 60m hurdles (world qualifier: 8.16) – CBP: JESSICA ENNIS-HILL (7.95) 2013 – Defending champion (2020): YASMIN MILLER (8.29) – Most wins: LORNA BOOTH 5 – UK lead: CINDY SEMBER (7.96)

The clear UK leader CINDY SEMBER is absent but it should make it a closer race with just 0.06 of a second between HOLLY MILLS, MEGHAN MARRS, JENNA BLUNDELL and ALICIA BARRATT on their 2022 times.

Women’s high jump (world qualifier: 1.97) – CBP: KATARINA JOHNSON-THOMPSON (1.97) 2015 – Defending champion (2020): BETHAN PARTRIDGE (1.87) – Most wins: SUSAN JONES-MONCRIEFF 7 – UK lead: EMILY BORTHWICK (1.95)

Former world leader EMILY BORTHWICK has been a revelation in 2022 but she was not at her best in the Müller Indoor Grand Prix where LAURA ZIALOR was in good form and finished second equal beside the Olympic champion MARIYA LASITSKENE with a (1.91) PB. No other British jumper has gone higher than (1.80) this winter

Women’s pole vault (world qualifier: 4.75) – CBP: HOLLY BRADSHAW (4.77) 2013 – Defending champion (2020): SOPHIE COOK (4.50) – Most wins: JANINE WHITLOCK 7 – UK lead: JADE IVE (4.35)

With Olympic medallist HOLLY BRADSHAW sitting out the winter, there will be no UK representative in Belgrade. The title should be fought out between reigning champion SOPHIE COOK and 2017 winner JADE IVE, while 18-year-old SOPHIE ASHURST looks a clear bet for third.

Women’s long jump (world qualifier: 6.80) – CBP: KATARINA JOHNSON-THOMPSON (6.75) 2014 – Defending champion (2020):ABIGAIL IROZURU (6.70) – Most wins: ETHEL RABY 5 – UK lead: LORRAINE UGEN (6.71)

Former world indoor bronze medallist LORRAINE UGEN is out on her own at the top of the rankings but the title should see a closer affair than the 2022 lists suggest. Olympic finalists ABIGAIL IROZURU and JAZMIN SAWYERS (6.46) in Torun this week have yet to come anywhere near their best this winter but are proven competitors while consistent LUCY HADAWAY should also be in the medal hunt.

Lorraine Ugen (Mark Shearman)

Women’s triple jump (world qualifier: 14.30) – CBP: ASHIA HANSEN (14.23) 1999 – Defending champion (2020): NAOMI OGBETA (13.83) – Most wins: MICHELLE GRIFFITH/ASHIA HANSEN 5 – UK lead: NAOMI METGER (13.83)

NAOMI METGER (OGBETA when she won her last title) just missed out on the Olympics last year and here she enjoys a metre supremacy over the opposition and would be a major surprise if she did not win her third successive title. LILY HULLAND looks the best bet for second.

Women’s shot (world qualifier: 18.30) – CBP: JUDY OAKES (18.57) 1996 – Defending champion (2020): AMELIA STRICKLER (17.97) – Most wins: JUDY OAKES 18 – UK lead: SOPHIE MCKINNA (18.53)
Last time in 2020, SOPHIE MCKINNA was surprisingly beaten by AMELIA STRICKLER but she has started in 2022 in great form and the great JUDY OAKES championship record is within her range. Surprisingly while she has won nine indoor medals, only one of them was gold. STRICKLER is entered but has yet to compete in 2022.

Sophie McKinna (Mark Shearman)

Women’s pentathlon (world qualifier: n/a) – CBP: JULIA BENNETT (4297) (1998) – Defending champion (2020): KATIE STAINTON (4306) – Most wins: KELLY SOTHERTON/KARLA DREW 3 – UK lead: HOLLY MILLS (4597)

Top of the rankings by 400 plus points, HOLLY MILLS only competes in individual events. KATIE STAINTON won last year’s British and English titles multi event title outdoors but she has barely competed in 2022 and based on the year’s rankings England indoor runner-up this winter JO ROWLAND has the best mark this winter.

Women’s 3000m walk (world qualifier: n/a) – CBP: GILLIAN O’SULLIVAN (IRL) (12:17.56) – Defending champion (2020) 5000W: ABIGAIL JENNINGS (25:28.46) – Most wins: GILLIAN O’SULLIVAN 3 – UK lead: BETHAN DAVIES (13:17.38)

While the men’s walks entry is dire, the women’s is strong though BETHAN DAVIES has a huge advantage by time on what is quite a youthful field. There are also men’s and women’s disability 60m where Paralympic champions THOMAS YOUNG and SOPHIE HAHN are clear favourites in combined ambulant categories

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

START FITNESS METROPOLITAN LEAGUE – The fifth fixture of five takes place on Saturday 19 February at Trent Park, Cockfosters Road, Middlesex (SatNav EN4 0JZ). Please note; because of its size, Trent Park has several different post codes. The one given is the most appropriate and closest to the Cockfosters Road entrance to the Park.
Race Headquarters – Located just beyond “Go Ape”, on the left hand side (north) of Lime Avenue.
Refreshments – Are available for purchase in the Trent Park café which is near to the Start/Finish area. In addition, the Wildlife Rescue & Ambulance Service (Enfield), located at the eastern end of the access road known as Lime Avenue (approx. 600 metres from the Start/Finish area), has a tea shop which is open until 4 pm.
Course Location – The main start / finish area is adjacent to the race HQ. HQ to course walk time, less than a minute.
Course Description – Very undulating course on open, rough, lumpy park land. Liable to be soft underfoot throughout. Some exposed tree roots in places, and two small wooden bridges that could be slippery. The course is likely to be very muddy and slippery in places so is not suitable for ordinary trainers. Spikes are strongly recommended for this event.
Public Transport – London Underground – Cockfosters station is the northern end of the Piccadilly Line. The station is 300 metres to the south of the Cockfosters Road entrance to Trent Park (approximately 5 minute walk). Turn right out of the station, walk north along Cockfosters Road, past the BP Garage (with M&S). Use of public transport is strongly recommended due to the proximity of the underground station and limited car parking at Trent Park.
Directions From Major Roads – Cockfosters Road (A111) entrance; approximately two miles to the south of Junction 24 of the M25, on the left hand side, or just over half a mile to the north of the junction of the A111 and A110 (Bramley Road), on the right hand side (SatNav EN4 0JZ).
Parking – Parking is available within Trent Park but is likely to be very limited. Given the proximity of Trent Park to Cockfosters underground station, use of public transport is therefore strongly recommended. If you intend to drive, please car-share as much as possible. The main car parking facility is at the Cockfosters Road entrance to Trent Park. PLEASE NOTE: The private car park close to the Southgate Hockey Centre at the top of Snakes Lane is NOT available. Please do not attempt to park there – you WILL be turned back. Cars must not be parked on any of the roads within Trent Park.
Trent Park closes at sunset, which will be at approximately 17:00. The gate at the Cockfosters Road entrance is usually closed at this time, but drivers must take care to check the closing time which will be shown on the sign inside the main entrance.

£100k OF FUNDING NEEDED TO SAVE ENGLISH SCHOOLS TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

The English Schools Athletic Association (ESAA) is coming up to its centenary year in 2025 yet they need £100,000 of funding to make sure that the 2022 ESAA Track and Field Championships can go ahead this summer. As of February 8, ESAA has raised £13,000 from more than 450 donations. This was after New Balance chose not to renew their sponsorship agreement which funded both the track and field and cross country championships. That decision and the subsequent SOS piece from CHRIS COHEN – vice-president of the English Schools Athletic Association – for AW last month, has resulted in a number of athletes, broadcasters and fans rallying in the support of ESAA.

DALEY THOMPSON, an English Schools 200m champion in 1975 who went on to become double Olympic, world, double European and three-time Commonwealth decathlon champion, tweeted: “Save the ESAA Track & Field Championships. This is the greatest athletics championship in the world. “Sorry Olympics but you are a close second. They [ESAA] are only three years off being 100! They are also the first port of call for aspiring Olympians. Your tenner will help.”

DENISE LEWIS, English Schools long jump winner in the 1980s who subsequently became Olympic, European and two-time Commonwealth heptathlon champion, tweeted: “The vital grassroots organisation needs a little help. Please donate if you can.”

KATHARINE MERRY, a former English Schools champion in sprints and combined events who went on to win bronze in the Sydney Olympics 400m final, tweeted: “Again. The thought of losing the invaluable Schools Athletics Championships is heartbreaking. It’s the launch pad for so many successful athletes. I wouldn’t have achieved what I did without proudly wearing my Warks [Warwickshire] vest from the age of 12. It can’t be lost.”

In total, 135 ESAA athletes have won European Championship medals, 35 of them gold while 278 have collected medals at British Empire or Commonwealth Games, of which 81 have claimed gold. ESAA has produced 14 Olympic champions and 77 medallists, with SIR MO FARAH the most recent, as well as 71 World Championship medals, of which 13 were gold, the most recent including DINA ASHER-SMITH & KATARINA JOHNSON-THOMPSON in 2019. The heritage of ESAA goes back to when The DUKE OF YORK, later to become KING GEORGE VI, was the first President of the organisation and took an active part in its founding, with LORDS DESBOROUGH, LONSDALE, CASTLEROSSE and PERCY as Vice Presidents. Although ESAA no longer has royal patronage, the Association is still entirely volunteer-led with nobody in the organisation taking any salary from its activities, but a large group of teachers and retired teachers still working for the benefit of young athletes and their love of the sport. The first Olympic champions from the English Schools Championships were MARY BIGNAL (later RAND) and ANN PACKER, who each won gold in Tokyo in 1964.

As the organisation approaches its centenary year in 2025 the race is on to find a sponsor and keep the next generation of athletes not just inspired in athletics but a chance to find global success in the future. In the meantime, the fundraising offers a glimmer of hope in the short-term. You can donate to help save ESAA Track and Field Championships here.

BBC AGREE DEAL WITH UKA TO COVER 2022 MAJOR EVENTS The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

UK Athletics has confirmed that BBC will be its broadcast partner for their series of 2022 events. This follows criticism last summer when a deal failed to be struck for the Müller British Athletics Championships in Manchester which meant the Olympic trials were not shown on television for the first time in years and merely streamed on the British Athletics website instead. UKA said: “In an exciting year for the sport boasting no less than four major track and field championships, BBC Sport will bring the key UKA events to fans via a combination of network television and digital coverage on platforms including BBC iPlayer, the BBC Sport website and the red button.”

The events start next week with the Müller Indoor Grand Prix Birmingham on February 19 followed by the UK Athletics Indoor Championships in Birmingham on February 26-27. Then, this summer, there is the Müller Birmingham Diamond League on May 21 and the Müller UK Athletics Championships in Manchester on June 24-26. The news follows last summer’s announcement that BBC will cover the Diamond League series until 2024MARK MUNRO, interim CEO at UKA, said: “We are delighted to once again be partnering with the BBC for our 2022 major events series. “Athletics is given a brilliant platform by BBC Sport and we’re looking forward to working with the team there to bring great athletics performances into people’s homes in the year ahead. “The audience reach of their website, red button and iPlayer platforms coupled with the main network means our athletes’ journeys can be followed in a number of ways by fans of the sport and in this stellar year for athletics it is more important than ever to maximise the exposure that the four major track and field championships will bring.”

JUSTIN GATLIN ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT FROM TRACK AND FIELD – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

JUSTIN GATLIN – Veteran US sprinter won glittering 15 Olympic and world medals but also served two doping bans during career has retired from the sport at the age of 40. The American announced on his Instagram that he had hung up his spikes after a 20-year career with a post titled “Dear Track”. “From running around play grounds playing tag as a kid, to burning down sidelines of youth football fields, to racing the neighbourhood kids on foot while they were on bikes. My life changed the moment I knew your name…Track,” Gatlin said. “With love comes challenges and you gave me so many throughout my career, some that were easier than others and some that hurt more than life itself. “Looking toward the future, I want to live a true legacy that continues to inspire others. Turning one year older and shifting my energies into new career endeavours, I hope to continue to inspire those who have supported me throughout my whole career.” His retirement isn’t particularly a shock given GATLIN is now deep into his twilight years as a sprinter, emphasised by the fact that he failed to qualify for the US team at last year’s Tokyo Olympics. Nonetheless, he ends his career as an Olympic and four-time world sprint champion. He has won an astonishing 15 Olympic and world medals, two world indoor sprint titles and three consecutive Diamond League titles. His 60m, 100m and 200m personal bests of 6.45, 9.74 and 19.57 also sees him place ninth, fifth and sixth on the respective all-time lists.

For over a decade he was part of a sprinting generation, including USAIN BOLT, YOHAN BLAKE and TYSON GAY, which captured the imagination of athletics fans around the world. GATLIN was the first on the scene when he struck Olympic gold in the 100m at Athens 2004 before going one better a year later at Helsinki 2005 by winning the world sprint double of 100m and 200m. His rivalry with BOLT ended up becoming must-watch action and after finishing second to the Jamaican in the 100m at Moscow 2013 and Beijing 2015 he finally avenged defeat with victory at London 2017.

However, he will also be remembered as one of the most high-profile athletes in track and field history to serve two doping bans. The first occurred in 2001 when GATLIN was banned from international competition for two years, later reduced to one, by the then IAAF for amphetamine. GATLIN, who was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, appealed on the grounds that he had taken the medication since he was a child to treat the disorder. The appeal resulted in the IAAF reinstating Gatlin to competition but he was still banned from competing internationally. In 2006 GATLIN, at that point the reigning Olympic and world 100m champion, tested positive for testosterone. As this was his second doping ban the American faced a lifetime ban from the sport but due to co-operation with the authorities and the “exceptional circumstances” around the first case it was reduced to eight years. GATLIN first accepted this but later appealed to the American Arbitration Association which reduced it to four years. A further appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport – reduction of the four-year ban to two years based on the first 2001 case not being part of the evidence – failed. GATLIN subsequently missed Beijing 2008, an Olympics which saw Bolt break world records in both the 100m and 200m. The retirement of GATLIN marks the end of an era for one of the quickest and explosive yet controversial sprinters in athletics. The legacy he leaves behind will certainly not go unnoticed.

HENRY RYAN WINS BARNET SCHOOLS RACE – Congratulations to HENRY who won the Year 6 cross country race at Stonex Stadium area on Wednesday 8 February. Photograph of HENRY with his winners medal.

ART OF SHOT PUT WITH RYAN CROUSER – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Olympic champion and world record-holder takes us inside an event that needs plenty of power but also a great deal of skill. The idea of seeing who can throw a heavy object over the greatest distance has been around for thousands of years. HOMER mentions Greek soldiers having rock throwing competitions, while in the middle ages military men were known to hurl cannon balls. It’s perhaps little surprise, then, that the shot put has been part of the modern Olympics since the first Games, in 1896.

Men throw a 16lbs (7.26kg) shot while the women compete with one weighing 8.5lbs (4kg). The shot is thrown from a circle with a diameter of 2.135m (seven feet) and a stop board 10cm (four inches) high at its front. The circle is normally made of concrete – or wood if it’s an indoor competition. It’s an event with a very straightforward outcome but, as with so many sporting disciplines, mastering the nuance of technique is key. Few have ever been better at shot put than Olympic champion and world record-holder RYAN CROUSERAW sat down with him as he explained the discipline:

How would you explain shot put to someone who had never seen it? I would say go to a bowling alley, pick up the heaviest bowling ball (16lbs) and go to a basketball court. Stand on the free throw line, turn around and try to make a three-quarter court shot with that bowling ball. If you did that you wouldn’t break the shot put world record but you’d be close to a medal at a major championships. I think that puts some perspective on what we’re doing out there.

Physical attributes – The best shot putters are really good athletes with a good sense of balance, are able to move well and are able to sprint. Having a good sense of rhythm is also important. If you have someone who’s fast moving in a straight line that isn’t enough because you have to be conscious of how you move rotationally as well. It’s a misconception that it’s just about how much you can bench press. Being an all-round athlete and how you move is important. Being on the bigger side, as far as build goes, helps. If you are skinny and built like a distance runner with narrow shoulders and a lighter bone frame, it’s hard to throw the shot a long way. But I would say that’s not a make or break because, when I was younger, I was tall and skinny. I would say it’s easier to get bigger and stronger than to develop natural athleticism.

Putting the shot The rules state that the shot must start on the neck, finish near the neck and be released above the shoulder. It has to be more of a put movement, in close, which is biomechanically a much safer way to apply force. Think how much you can bench press compared to how heavy a ball you could throw. You’re not allowed to drop below the shoulder or outside the shoulder as you would in a normal throwing motion, like you would throw a baseball or a cricket ball. I think that’s mainly to protect athletes starting out because you don’t want to be doing a throwing motion with a 16lb ball or you won’t have much of an elbow or shoulder left!

What constitutes a foul throw? – A throwing foul – when the ball comes below the shoulder, turning it into a throwing motion – is very unusual at the elite level. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an athlete called for a throwing foul. You have to throw, remain balanced and walk out of the back half of the circle. Probably 99 per cent of fouls are when an athlete steps out of the front half, either accidentally stepping on the toe board or being off-balance. After a bad throw an athlete will often intentionally step out of the front because they don’t want their poor throw measured.

Two methods: glide or spin – Gliding is when you sort of shuffle from the back to the front of the circle, a very speed-orientated technique. The spin is where you do a full turn from the back to the front of the ring. For the glide, which was the dominant style from the 1960s, you start with your back facing the toe board and make a single glide movement across, pushing off your right foot. You then land on the same foot before using your left foot in the power position and throwing the ball. For a long time that was the textbook, prototypical, method. In the 1970s a few athletes started applying a discus-style rotational movement in the shot, with varied success. It’s a much more complex movement and it wasn’t until probably 2016 that the rotational method became dominant in major championships. I have used both methods. I used the glide until I was 18 so I have a good understanding of, not my limits, but what the possibilities are because I threw with the glide and then switched to the spin. I think I could still have success with the glide but the upward potential of the spin is greater.

Technique, speed or strength? For me, at this stage, it’s a game of inches. The technical gains are the largest in terms of gaining distance. I would describe speed and strength as limiting factors. If you are not strong enough to be proficient through the movements, that can be detrimental and if you can’t go fast enough that can also be detrimental. If you have a baseline speed and a baseline strength established, technique is then the optimising factor built on that basic speed and strength. I would advise any younger thrower to focus on technique. For me at the elite level, I still try to continue improving technique but also trying to raise my baseline.

Is height a help or a hindrance? –  I am tall, which can be an advantage and a disadvantage. From a physics perspective, being tall can be an advantage because you have longer levers and therefore more time to apply force to the shot. The downside of being tall is that, for me, the circle is very small – just over a foot shorter than the discus ring. That’s probably why you see more of the taller athletes throwing the discus rather than the shot. Take TOMAS WALSH or JOE KOVACS – they can be really dynamic across the ring. I can’t have a sprint dynamic technique – I have to have a technique which is very conservative, which is focused on how I keep my 6ft 7in self from fouling at the front of the circle. I’ve spent most of my career figuring out a technique that works for me.

Training – I do four throwing workouts a week during the off-season and will add another to go to five during the season and I do four or five lifting sessions during the week. In addition I will have sprints, plyometrics and medicine ball training mixed in.

Competition tactics – The normal format is three throws, then three more throws in reverse order. The thing to understand about throwing is that your best throw does not come when you’re going at 100 per cent effort, but rather in the 80 to 85 per cent range.  I’m trying but not trying absolutely as hard as I can and not trying to force it to happen. I am keeping the body relaxed, which makes technical execution easier and keeps you in the proper mental state. Its maximum effort but relaxed and letting the event happen. There are some athletes who will skip, say, the fifth round to really focus on the sixth. Personally, I like to take all six throws although the effort might vary slightly between throws, depending on what the goal is for each round. In the first round I would probably throw at 75-80 per cent effort to get a mark in, to guarantee qualification for the last three throws. It’s what some people would call a safety throw. After that I would increase intensity. So I might start with a throw at 75 per cent, then move up to 80-85 per cent for the next three throws. Then it’s about assessing if I can continue to push that and throw a little bit harder or am I already at a good level and just stick with the 85 per cent and just try to let a big throw happen?

It is beneficial to be ahead after three throws so that you are the last thrower in the last round.  Before the last round if someone is ahead of me I know I will have at least one more attempt to better that.  It’s important to have the last throw in the last round – it means you’re the only athlete who has their fate in their own hands, because you know what you have to respond to. I like being the last thrower. It either means that I know the competition is already won, which is a great feeling, but it’s probably the best feeling in shot putting to produce your best throw in the last round when you need it to win.
