RESULTS
Just to clarify, that the results I publish can be different to those that are shown on the Power of 10. The differences relate to seasons and personal best performances. For example in the recent EYAL results, an athlete in the 200m ran (24.1), and on his profile his season’s best was shown as (23.88) indoors. As the 200m indoors and outdoors are totally different type of events, I had shown the (24.1) as a season’s best.
The Power of 10 publishes separate UK rankings for indoor and outdoor performances.

LOOKING BACK ON THE RICH HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY RELAY  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph taken by MARK SHEARMAN at the 2015 relays.

Taking place on Saturday November 2 this year, the popular event has a long-standing history that began in 1985. This weekend marks the 38th edition of the Saucony English Cross Country Relays, an event that first took place in 1985 with only under-17 men, junior and senior men participating.

Initially held at Crystal Palace Park and returning to the same venue in 1987, the relays found a permanent home at Berry Hill Park in Mansfield in 1989. That same year also saw the introduction of women’s categories, expanding the participation significantly and today athletes across all age groups from under-13 through to senior men can compete. This year, on the 38th anniversary of the event, more than 1000 teams are entered over the 10 races with 187 in the senior men’s event and 132 in the senior women’s.

Fortunately, Berry Hill Park is still available for this event, as there have been concerns about its future in recent years. Last year, for example, building work adjacent to the old clubhouse buildings meant the course had to be altered and the organisers had to eliminate the need for slightly shorter opening laps in all races. Cambridge & Coleridge AC won the senior men’s title in 2023, thanks to a strong performance from world cross country bronze medallist THOMAS KEEN, with CALLUM ELSON finishing the race to secure the club’s first national men’s title.

Meanwhile, Belgrave Harriers triumphed in the senior women’s race, led by a strong start from KATE AXFORD. University of Birmingham won the junior women’s race, while Aldershot, Farnham & District took the junior men’s title. Paris Olympian PHOEBE GILL, 17, helped St Alban’s secure victory in the under-17 women’s race, and Chelmsford AC will seek to defend their title in the under-17 men’s race after last year’s win.

With a central venue accessible to many clubs, the atmosphere promises to be exciting with smooth organisation and a packed 10-race schedule. The varied strategies used by different teams creates a thrilling competition, as multiple athletes often lead throughout the various legs of the race. Athletes will tackle the ‘tight and twisty’ course, covering laps of 2km for younger age groups and up to 5km for the senior men.

GLASGOW 2026 WILL STAGE TRACK AND FIELD BUT NO MARATHONS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Track and field athletics is one of 10 sports that will unfold at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow but there will be no marathons on the road. A scaled-back programme of 10 sports at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will feature athletics for able-bodied and para athletes. But the road marathons will not take place at the Games as sports like hockey, badminton, cricket and rugby sevens have also been dropped. Commonwealth Games marathon winners over the years include ROB DE CASTELLA, LISA MARTIN, KERRYN MCCANN, DOUGLAS WAKIIHURI and RON HILL. But there will be no champions in 2026.

The Games have moved to Glasgow after the Australian state of Victoria pulled out because of rising costs. Glasgow last held the event in 2014. A total of 3000 athletes from up to 74 Commonwealth nations and territories are expected to compete at the 2026 Games. The 10 sports that will feature in 2026 was originally due to be 22 if the event had taken place in Australia, though. In addition to athletics, which is due to take place at Scotstoun Stadium, the other sports in 2026 are swimming, basketball, artistic gymnastics, boxing, judo, lawn bowls, netball, track cycling and weightlifting. As with the marathons, the sport of cycling will also lose its road races.

KATIE SADLEIR, chief executive of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), said: “The Games promise to be a truly immersive festival of sport and celebration of culture and diversity that inspires athletes and sports – with a fan experience more accessible than ever before.” First Minister JOHN SWINNEY said: “While Glasgow 2026 will look quite different to previous Games, we can, and we must, use this as an opportunity to work collaboratively to ensure that this new concept brings a strong and sustainable future for the games.” The Scottish Secretary IAN MURRAY called the confirmation a “a great example of the UK and Scottish governments working together to deliver for Scotland”, citing the £2.3m put forward by the UK government for security costs.

OLYMPIANS DONATE DRAWINGS TO MIKE FLEET’S CHARITY PROJECT  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Track and field athletes such as LYNN DAVIES, KEELY HODGKINSON, COLIN JACKSON and MO FARRAH have been showcasing their artistic talents by contributing to Fleet’s book project for the charity CRY.

MIKE FLEET, a former middle-distance international athlete and long-time coach at Croydon Harriers, is leading a unique project to raise money for a charitable cause. The 86-year-old is gathering hand-drawn sketches from some of the world’s top athletes to create a special book, with all proceeds going to the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY). The charity is especially meaningful to FLEET and Croydon Harriers after two members of the club tragically passed away from undiagnosed conditions, and FLEET’S goal is to honour those athletes and to raise funds for the charity. His connection to athletics runs deep. As an athlete, he finished fifth in the 880 yards final at the 1962 Empire Games, a race famously won by PETER SNELL. Since retiring he has remained an influential figure as a coach, photographer and supporter of countless events.

Though he is collecting artwork from athletes across various sports, his main focus has been track and field – his own area of expertise. Over the past three years, he has secured 85 drawings from big names like LYNN DAVIES, KEELY HODGKINSON, COLIN JACKSON – and the list goes on. “Some of the drawings are absolutely brilliant, some are very funny, some are very simple,” Fleet says. “They date back from the 1936 Olympics to today.”

One memorable contribution came from MO FARAH, who admitted he couldn’t draw but still drew a “nice little scribbly Mobot,” says FLEET. “One great one I have is from HERB ELLIOTT, he is a great, great hero of mine. He was one of the greatest milers ever, never lost a mile race, had a world record and was an Olympic gold medallist. It was brilliant because he did me a super caricature of himself, as did ALLAN WELLS, the Olympic champion in Moscow.” FLEET’S goal is to collect 100 drawings before compiling the book, which will be auctioned to raise money for CRY. “I want it to be something that people see as being something worth buying at an auction,” says Fleet. “The plan is to go to major auction and I am told I could maybe get £3000 or more.” “I am also hoping to do 25 facsimile books and maybe sell them for £50 each, so the project is just more than one book.”

This is not FLEET’S first fundraising effort for CRY. He has completed several charity projects over the years, including writing a detailed book of Croydon Harriers, titled Croydon Harriers History 1920-2020, with all proceeds going to charity. He has also authored a coaching book with the title of Don’t Crush the Eggs in Your Armpit, covering every track and field event in detail, which AW reviewed earlier this year.

“It would be great if more Olympians could support this very good cause in memory of thousands of athletes and other sportsmen who sadly die of undiagnosed heart conditions,” says FLEET. “CRY carry out research in South London and they monitor groups of athletes, whilst putting heart monitors on them and checking them all over. They also carry out bereavement counselling and advice, it’s such a good cause.”

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

CONGRATULATIONS  To CHARLIE DOBSON, ZHARNEL HUGHES and LINA NIELSEN who are included in the 65 athletes who were awarded Lottery funding on the UK Athletics Olympic World Class Programme for the next 12 months ahead of the World Championships in Tokyo.

LIFE’S A LOTTERY FOR THE CLASS OF 2024-2025  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Here is the list of athletes who UK Athletics are backing to battle for podium places in future. KEELY HODGKINSON, KATARINA JOHNSTON-THOMPSON and MATT HUDSON-SMITH are among 65 athletes awarded Lottery funding on the UK Athletics Olympic World Class Programme for the next 12 months ahead of the World Championships in Tokyo. This follows a Paris Olympics where the British team won 10 medals – their best tally since 1984. The programme is split into four different levels of support – Podium, Podium Potential, Relay and Confirmation – with the goal of helping athletes who the governing body feels can win medals at the 2028 LA Olympics or in 2032.

Among the notable names not on the lists for this coming year are EILISH MCCOLGAN, SCOTT LINCOLN, LIZZIE BIRD, CALLUM WILKINSON, LAWRENCE OKOYE, NICK PERCY and ELLIOT GILES. Steeplechaser BIRD is now pursuing a career in law in the aftermath of making the European podium in Rome and breaking the British record at the Olympics, whereas there have also been post-Olympic retirements such as HOLLY BRADSHAW, ANDY POZZI, JESSIE KNIGHT and JODIE WILLIAMS. There are also some coaching changes at the end of this season. LOUIE HINCHLIFFE, for example, has moved away from CARL LEWIS in Houston to be coached by RICHARD KILTY, whereas MORGAN LAKE is no longer coached by ROBBIE GRABARZ.

“Athletics has had two consecutive years of bringing back 10 medals from a global stage and this investment is key to that,” said Olympic head coach PAULA DUNN. “I believe we have demonstrated as a sport we are directing this investment into the right areas and look forward to receiving confirmation of our LA investment later this year. “For those athletes who have transitioned off the programme or not made the programme today, it is not to say they won’t have success in future, just that the parameters for WCP selection are very specific and they do not qualify right at this moment. Everyone who wears the GB & NI vest should be proud of their achievement, we are, and we will continue to see where we can add value, support and guidance to those individuals who do not meet the WCP criteria at this time.”

60 YEARS ON: CELEBRATING TOKYO 1964 OLYMPIC GAMES  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. The following photographs were taken by MARK SHEARMAN.

This month marks 60 years since the 1964 edition of the Olympic Games took place in the Japanese capital. Sixty years ago this month, the world witnessed the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, a landmark event that introduced Asia to the global stage of the Olympic Games. Not only was it the first time the Games were hosted in Asia, but it also marked a technological milestone as the first Olympics to be broadcast live via satellite. While Team GB’s performance in 2012 was celebrated as the nation’s best-ever Olympic outing, it’s interesting to compare it to the 1964 haul. Back then, Great Britain brought home four gold medals, seven silvers, one bronze and five fourth-place finishes.

Two of the gold medals from Tokyo came with record-breaking performances. MARY RAND, one of Britain’s standout athletes at the time, took home gold in the long jump. On a rain-soaked runway, she began with a UK record jump of (6.59m) and by the fifth round she shattered the world record, leaping an impressive (6.76m). Just three days later, on October 17, 1964, RAND added to her medal tally with a silver in the women’s pentathlon. She completed her Olympic medal set by winning bronze in the 4x100m relay alongside team-mates JANET SIMPSON, DAPHNE ARDEN and DOROTHY HYMAN.

The second world record for the British team in Tokyo came from ANN PACKER in the 800m. Despite being a relative novice at the distance, she won a dramatic race in a world record of (2:01.10). With this victory, PACKER became the first British woman to win an Olympic title on the track.

The other two golds for Great Britain in 1964 were achieved by KEN MATTHEWS in the 20km race walk and LYNN DAVIES in the men’s long jump. DAVIES delivered the best performance of his career with a jump of (8.07m), clinching the top spot on the podium.

In total, 11 world records were set during the Tokyo Olympics. Among the most notable was Ethiopia’s ABEBE BILILA, who clocked a marathon time of (2:12:20), and USA’s BOB HAYES, who ran a blistering (10.00) seconds in the 100m final. The Games also saw other unforgettable performances, such as New Zealand’s PETER SNELL securing an extraordinary 800m and 1500m double. In the 10,000m, America’s BILLY MILLS pulled off a sensational win, finishing nearly 50 seconds faster than his personal best to take gold and the dramatic men’s discus final stood out, with USA’s AL OERTER claiming victory in a thrilling contest.

Fast forward to 2021 and Tokyo once again made history by hosting the postponed Olympics during the global pandemic. Team GB walked away from those games with a smaller medal haul (two silvers and three bronze) but they were considered vastly different from the 1964 edition.

To celebrate the 60th anniversary, you can find our original coverage from the 1964 Games via the Athletics Weekly archive.

NOAH LYLES AND GABBY THOMAS STAR IN SECOND SEASON OF ‘SPRINT’  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

The US duo have prominent roles once again in the series, while the Netflix cameras also focus on the likes of JULIEN ALFRED and LETSITE TEBOGO. The Paris Olympics might’ve ended but fans will soon get a behind the scenes look at the Games. SPRINT, the track and field documentary series that premiered on July 2, is back again for its second instalment and it will be released on November 13. The trailer for the series shows a number of athletes preparing for the Olympics and how they battled it out for a gold medal in the French capital. The second series of SPRINT focuses on: FRED KERLEY, GABBY THOMAS, KISHANE THOMPSON, JULIEN ALFRED, LETSITE TEBOGO, MELISSA JACKSON, , MARCELL JACOBS, KENNY BEDNAREK, SHERICKA JACKSON and OBLIQUE SEVILLE. Quite a few of them feature in the trailer and LYLES and THOMAS are just two of those athletes.

LYLES won the Olympic 100m gold medal in scintillating fashion at the Stade de France, clocking (9.79) to beat THOMPSON by just five-thousandths of a second. In the 200m it was a slightly different story, with the US athlete – who later revealed he had Covid – finishing second behind TEBOGO. The Motswana also features heavily in the series, who won his country’s first ever gold medal at the Olympics with that victory over half a lap. TEBOGO clocked an incredible (19.46), which put him fifth on the 200m all-time list. Safe to say, THOMAS’ equally impressive win in the 200m will feature in the second season of SPRINT. The American ran (21.83) to stand on the top of the podium and left the Games with an amazing three gold medals, after helping the US women’s 4x100m and 4x400m teams to glory.

ALFRED, who claimed silver behind Thomas in the 200m, won Olympic 100m gold and secured Saint Lucia’s first ever medal in any sport in the history of the Games. Her national record of (10.72) in the pouring rain at the Stade de France sparked wild celebrations back on the island and videos of thousands of people watching her 100m glory went viral around the world. Netflix will now be hoping the global success stories of athletes from the Olympics can help get the sport into new markets and inspire the next generation.

START FITNESS METROPOLITAN LEAGUE – The first fixture of five took place on Saturday 12 October at Claybury, Essex.
What a solid start to the season, with the numbers slightly down to last season at Claybury. The day started with the Under 11s, with the Boys team finishing a close 2nd to WSEH, the Girls finished in 10th place as we had only 1 runner and you need 4 for the team result. The Under 15/U17 Men finished in 3rd place, albeit only 17 points behind the winners, the Women finishing in a splendid 4th place. CARDIFF KICKS OFF THE BRITISH ATHLETICS CROSS CHALLENGE  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Llandaff Fields in the Welsh capital is stage one of this winter’s popular cross-country series followed by events in Liverpool, Glasgow, Leeds and Nottingham. The British Athletics Cross Challenge Series kicks off in Cardiff on November 9 followed by the European trials in Liverpool on November 23 and then Glasgow and Leeds in the new year before culminating in Wollaton Park in March.

The Cardiff event has grown in stature in recent years after becoming part of the World Athletics Cross Country Tour with Megan Keith and Innes FitzGerald among the winners last year.  Grassroots runners from the Gwent League ensure a busy day in this early-winter test. The series moves to Sefton Park in Liverpool a fortnight later for the European Cross Country Championships trials, where athletes will look to earn selection on the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team for Antalya in December. The trial is a long established event at Sefton Park although there will be changes to the senior and under-23 races this year with under-23 athletes running a lap less than their senior counter-parts and peeling off to the finish much earlier.

Athletes at the European Cross Country Championships in Turkey in December will race over relatively short distances this year with senior men and women tackling 7.5km, under-23 men and women both covering 6km and the under-20 men and women running 4.5km. In order to pick the best possible team the trials distances for seniors and under-23s in Liverpool are 8km and 5.6km respectively, although the fact both age groups will be in the same race – and tackling different distances – will potentially cause confusion on the day.

The under-17 and under-20 athletes will also race alongside each other in Liverpool over just 4.4km. In addition there will be trials for the mixed relay at the Euro Cross over 1500m. What’s more, the whole event incorporates the Mid Lancs, Liverpool & District and Red Rose cross-country leagues.

On January 11 the Cross Challenge moves on to Alexandra Park in Glasgow with the event including the Scottish District Championships before hitting Temple Newsam in Leeds on February 8 (it has been incorrectly advertised as Roundhay Park elsewhere). The Temple Newsam event will incorporate the Home Countries International and Celtic Challenge too. Then, on March 8, the finale of the Cross Challenge is at Wollaton Park in Nottingham and will, as usual, incorporate the UK Inter-Counties Championships. Senior titles last winter went to Abbie Donnelly and Calum Johnson before both of them went on to tackle the World Cross Country Championships in Belgrade.

With the World Cross now being a biennial event, there is no global championships this coming winter. Instead it is next held in Tallahassee, United States, on January 10 in 2026. Given the much earlier than usual date, British organisers are already weighing up how the domestic calendar should play out in 2025-2026 with one of the key questions being where and when to hold a GB trial for Tallahassee.

RUTH CHEPNGETICH TAKES APART WOMEN’S WORLD MARATHON RECORD IN CHICAGO  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

The Kenyan becomes the first woman in history to go sub-2:10 in the marathon and obliterates the previous mark of (2:11:53). It’s five years to the day since BRIGID KOSGEI smashed the women’s marathon record with (2:14:04) in Chicago. Not only was it a performance that re-defined what was possible over 26.2 miles but it also bettered PAULA RADCLIFFE’S (2:15:25) – described as a “quantum leap” back in 2003 – by one minute and 21 seconds. KOSGEI’S mark survived until 2023 when, at last year’s Berlin Marathon, TIGIST ASSEFA decimated it, becoming the first woman in history to run a sub-2:12 marathon with (2:11:53). In slicing two minutes and 11 seconds off the world record, ASSEFA a took the marathon to new levels and for the first time, you questioned whether it was possible for a female athlete to go under two hours and 10 minutes. Even though the marathon has evolved substantially over the last couple of decades – the 2:20 barrier was only broken in 2001 – the idea of a sub-2:10 run was still seen as largely fictitious and something that you’d need to see to believe it. If it was broken, how long would it take? Years or even decades? Well, it’s happened a lot sooner than everyone thought.

At this year’s Chicago Marathon, five years on from KOSGEI’S (2:14:04), fellow Kenyan RUTH CHEPNGETICH re-wrote the record books with a time of (2:09:56). Crossing the line, CHEPNGETICH CHEPNGETICH – the 2019 world marathon champion – raised her arms in the air, scarcely believing the magnitude of her accomplishment. Like ROGER BANNISTER’S (3:59.4) in 1954, USAIN BOLT’S (9.58) in 2009 or more recently, FAITH KIPYEGON’S (3:49.11) in 2023, Chepng’etich CHEPNGETICH’S time will be remembered forever. No doubt there will be others who also go below the 2:10 mark in the future, but CHEPNGETICH will always be the first who did it. “I feel so great, I’m proud of myself,” she said, after claiming her third crown at the Chicago Marathon. “This is my dream that has come true. I’ve fought a lot thinking about the world record and I have fulfilled it.” After 5km, CHEPNGETICH had made her intentions known and went through in an astonishing (15:00), with Ethiopian SUTUME KEBEDE just two seconds behind.

KEBEDE, who’d hinted of world record pace at the press-conference, was the only athlete who kept up with CHEPNGETICH in the early stages and the pair went through 10km in around (30:14). At this point, their projected time was around 2:07. The absurd pace was set and it was now a case of how long they could sustain it. By half-way, CHEPNGETICH had established a lead of 14 seconds to KEBEDE and looked in imperious shape, going through 13.1 miles in (64:16). To put that into perspective, it would put her fifth on the half-marathon all time list. As KEBEDE continued to fade, CHEPNGETICH maintained her strength and clocked (1:31:49) and (1:47:32) at the 30km and 35km marks respectively. Even though CHEPNGETICH was slowing, her start was that good that she had time to play with. The prospect of a sub-2:10 marathon now started to become real. There was little doubt that CHEPNGETICH would break ASSEFA’S mark of (2:11:53), which was remarkable enough in itself, but could she sneak under that barrier?

Aided by male pacemakers, Chepng’etich pushed on and went through 40km in (2:03:11). “It’s almost like seeing someone landing on the moon,” remarked CARRIE TOLLEFSON, the Athens 2004 Olympian who was commentating on the marathon. As CHEPNGETICH approached the final straight on Columbus Drive, she knew what was at stake. As the seconds agonisingly ticked away she sprinted towards the tape, her face grimacing but mind set on creating history. After crossing the line CHEPNGETICH’S face beamed as she looked at the time (2:09:56). In the end, the winning margin was seven minutes and 36 seconds, with KEBEDE coming home in (2:17:32). Before 2019, that would’ve put her third on the all-time list. The top American in the field was SUSANNA SULLIVAN, a full-time teacher who knocked over two minutes off her personal best to clock (2:21:56) and finished seventh overall.

In the men’s field, JOHN KORIR produced a fine performance, running (2:02:44) to win by one minute and 55 seconds. The Kenyan’s time was that fast it now puts him sixth on the all-time list. In a closely packed race early on, KORIR was one of a dozen or so guys that went through 5km and 10km in (14:43) and (29:27) respectively. Even at the half-way stage, it was difficult to decide the winner, with the front of the field keeping a metronomic pace, going through in (62:19). Between 30km and 35km, KORIR made his move and within the space of 10 minutes had established a gap of 29 seconds. There was no turning back and as the margin to the rest of the field became bigger by the kilometre, victory was never in doubt. KORIR, who is a regular in Chicago and finished third two years ago, could finally taste victory in the Windy City.

NATIONAL ROAD RELAYS – Took place at Sutton Park on 5 October.

SBH REVIEW OF THE 2023-2024 METROPOLITAN LEAGUE SEASON

Under 11 Boys – Has been an outstanding season for the team, winning all 5 fixtures, and became league champions by some 134 points (last season they finished 3rd). Individually JOSIAH ALDHAM and PRINCE-MOSES JOHN competed in all 5 fixtures, with TAHA COCKERELL, BEN KASPAR, JAMES MOUDART and DENNYS PASCAL competed in 4.

Under 11 Girls – This season has been a vast improvement (last season they finished 7th). In the 5 fixtures have been close with Woodford Green & Essex Ladies, and they won the 2nd fixture at Welwyn. The team ended up the season in 2nd place behind WG&EL, by only 29 points. Individually SIENNA DARCY and ELFIE SHAW competed in all 5 fixtures, with GRACE ROONEY competed in 4.

Under 13 Boys – Has been an outstanding season for the team, after finishing joint 1st with WG&EL at Claybury, they went on to win 3 of the 4 remaining fixtures. And became league champions by 14 points over WG&EL (last season they became champions by 13 points over WG&EL). Individually SAM DARCY and LADDIE SHAW competed in all 5 fixtures, with JESSIE ABRAHAMS, CALEB HILTON, EDDIE PASCAL and AARON YACOBI competed in 4.

Under 13 Girls – The team has had a good season, but with a couple of indifferent results, they eventually finished in 6th place (last season they finished 4th). Individually MEI HAYAKAWA and AMBER JACKSON competed in 4 fixtures, with VERA DOUDKO and JAI HAYAKAWA competed in 3 and 2 respectively.

Under 15 Boys/Under 17 Men – Has been an outstanding season for the team, defending the title they won last season, winning 3 of the 5 fixtures, winning by 24 points over WG&EL. Individually ARTHUR PHILLIPS competed in all 5 fixtures, with DANIEL BANYARD, JAI DARYANANI, JARED MORRIS and EUAN PHILLIPS competed in 4.

Under 15 Girls/Under 17 Women – Unfortunately this is the 2nd season we have struggled with numbers on the line, which meant we finished this season in 8th place (last season we finished 11th). Individually ELIZABETH DA TERESA competed in all 5 fixtures, with ERIN GIBLIN and POSIE SHAW competed in 4.

Senior Men – After what you call a dodgy start at Claybury, the team then responded by winning 2 of the next 4 fixtures, which meant we finished in a comfortable 2nd place, and promotion to Division 1. The Veteran Men were very outstanding, and finished the season in 5th place, we have the potential to push for promotion next season (last season they finished 5th). Individually ARTHUR PHILLIPS competed in all 5 fixtures, with THOMAS BUTLER, MARK COTTLE, PHILIP CUNNINGHAM, PAUL MACCARTHY and TIM UNDERHILL competed in 4.

Senior Women – We are capable of doing much better, and finished the season in 10th place, just avoiding relegation (last season they finished 6th). Individually JO KENT competed in all 5 fixtures, with ABI GREEN and NICOLA PAYNE competed in 3 and 2 respectively..

Howard Williams Trophy (Juniors) – 1st Woodford Green & Essex Ladies (9 Wins, 101 points), 2nd SBH (10, 95), 3rd London Heathside (1, 85)
Howard Williams Trophy (Seniors) – 1st London Heathside (3 Wins, 44 points), 2nd Victoria Park & Tower Hamlets (0, 44), 3rd Highgate Harriers (4 42), 13th SBH (0, 21)

ETHAN WALSHETHAN, our top pole vaulter, died on 13 September 2024, following a car accident on 11 September. Ethan joined SBH in January 2014, at the age of 16. He competed regularly, and with a PB of (5.36m) indoors and (5.30m) outdoors, he was 3rd on the SBH All-Time list. He was a great “team player” and will be sorely missed.
The family have invited us to attend the Funeral Mass at 1pm on Friday 11 Ootober, at Mount St. Bernard Abbey, Oaks Road, Coalville, LE67 5UL, which he always described as his favourite place. A wake will follow at Beaumanor Hall, Beaumanor Drive, Woodhouse, LE12 8TX.
GEOFF MORPHITIS will be attending, representing SBH, and I would welcome any other members to join him, and to please bring your fondest memories and stories of ETHAN to share. By the way, ETHAN loved any excuse to get dressed up, so in his honour we have been asked to wear our best black attire !!!
GEOFF will be leaving from StoneX Stadium at 10.45, and driving up on the day, so please let him know if you want a lift call him on 07976 994302.
