HELP WANTED – PARENTS – We need your help to ensure your child can compete at all their events this season!
Volunteering to help on the track or field at just a couple of our home and away fixtures in 2025, will give us certainty early on that the meetings can go ahead. It’s a fun way to be involved on the day, you will still be free to watch your child’s events, lunches and refreshments are always provided at our home fixtures and at most away ones too.
Please contact either GERALD ALTERMAN or ROSALIND ZEFFERTT for further information or complete this form SBH 2025 Summer Availability.

NEW CLUB RECORD – Congratulations to KAYDEN THOMAS who broke the Boys Under 15 80m Hurdles record with a time of (11.09) at the English Schools Championships at Birmingham on 11-12 July. This broke his own record of (11.27) at Harrow on 28 June 2025.
NEW CLUB RECORD – Congratulations to HARLEY HENRY who broke the Men’s Under 17 Triple Jump record with a jump of (15.28m) at the English Schools Championships at Birmingham on 11-12 July. This broke his own record of (15.23m) at Derby on 5 July 2025.
NEW CLUB RECORD – Congratulations to HOLLY RYAN who broke the Women’s Under 17 300m record with a time of (38.02) at the English Schools Championships at Birmingham on 11-12 July. This broke her own record of (38.20) at Watford on 18 May 2025.
NEW CLUB RECORD – Congratulations to ROSALIND ZEFFERTT who broke the Women’s 60-64 Pole Vault record with a height of (2.51m) at the Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers Jumpsfest at StoneX Stadium on 13 July. This broke her own record of (2.40m) at Perivale on 17 May 2025.
REQUEST FROM TEAM MANAGERS – We are asking that you reply to team managers when they contact you? It’s very difficult to select a team if the athletes don’t reply especially when we can see that they have read the text. Even if they are unavailable the team managers need to know!
SBH CLUB RECORDS – I have carried out a review of athletes performances on the PO10, Following this I have found the odd record that had not been picked up, also events that not included in the club record list (mainly U9/U11 and veteran athletes). Another reason is some results can be posted on the PO10 a week or so late, and it is almost impossible to no they have been included on the PO10.
To help in identifying a club record, I have produced a single document, for example ‘Men’s Club Track and Road Records Outdoors’ and all events from Under 9 up to Masters 70+ are shown on one page. Also probably fortnightly is to review the clubs section on the PO10, this identifies every performance for every age-group, based on all results published on the PO10.
These are those documents – I am currently updating these with the latest club records from the 14 June

WATFORD OPEN MEETINGS – To avoid disappointment, please remember the each meeting opens on the lunchtime of the preceding meeting and other than sprints are normally full within about 48 hours. Therefore the 23 July fixture will be open from the 8 July on the ‘Roster’ site.

RESULTS
Just to clarify, that the results I publish can be different to those that are shown on the Power of 10. The differences relate to seasons and personal best performances. For example in the recent EYAL results, an athlete in the 200m ran (24.1), and on his profile his season’s best was shown as (23.88) indoors. As the 200m indoors and outdoors are totally different type of events, I had shown the (24.1) as a season’s best. Regarding Master athletes any personal best performances relate to their current age-groups, as Club Records for Masters age-groups are in 5 year periods.

ALAN PASCOE: NO TITLE SPONSOR FOR ENGLISH SCHOOLS IS ‘TRAGIC’ – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
ALAN PASCOE, European and Commonwealth 400m hurdles champion and one of the most respected voices in the sport, believes it is “tragic” that the English Schools does not have a title sponsor in its centenary year. He does believe, however, that the event still has the potential to attract serious interest from businesses who would be keen to support the most talented athletes in the country. As an athlete PASCOE won multiple medals in the 1960s and 1970s, including Olympic 4x400m silver in 1972, but he later became a hugely successful athletics marketing man and among other things helped forge the English Schools sponsorship deals with Milk and TSB in the 1980s and 1990s.
On Saturday (July 12) he was proud to attend the parade of ex-champions and current athletes at the 2025 championships in Birmingham to mark the event’s centenary. But he said: “It’s tragic they don’t have a decent sponsor as they can’t afford to do the development work.” The 77-year-old added: “This is the pathway to the international team and my view is that every one of these kids should be communicated with on a regular basis, which of course is quite possible now. And every three months on a regional basis there should be a get-together, where they can train in squads with other people at a similar level, and made to feel important and that the sport is right behind them. I don’t think enough of that is going on.” In addition to Milk and TSB, the English Schools has enjoyed sponsorship deals in the past 20 years with Sainsbury’s, Aviva and New Balance. But during fallow years when there is no sponsorship they have often struggled to find the money to stage one of the biggest athletics events on the calendar.
The English Schools has had some success lately by getting individuals or companies to sponsor some of the events on the schedule. It has led to athletes like DINA ASHER-SMITH and KEELY HODGKINSON supporting some of the events. In addition to ongoing sponsorship problems, the English Schools is also wrestling with the planned introduction of new age groups for young athletes in the UK. In coming months they will debate whether to maintain their own age groups in 2026 or fall in line with UKA and most of the rest of the world.

PASCOE says that around 20 years ago one of the most prominent officials at the then IAAF caught sight of one of the English Schools spectator programmes. “He didn’t believe you could run a meet like that,” says PASCOE, due to the sheer number of disciplines and competitors involved over two days. “It deserves more profile, deserves a big sponsor and deserves big coverage in the media,” PASCOE adds. On his own experiences, PASCOE didn’t reach the final at his first English Schools but finished fifth and then third before winning senior boys high hurdles titles in 1966 and 1967. “It was transformational to me,” he said. “The second time I came here was when I realised that I could do quite well as an athlete. I was a council house kid and we didn’t really have family holidays other than with relatives so being billeted out was exciting. “The experience was transformational and also the competition because it was fierce. And the one thing we wanted to do above all was win the national schools or get a medal depending on what level you were at. “I think the depth was better in those days as well because more schools did athletics in a formal way. The top end at these (2025) championships is very good but below the top eight it tends to fade away a little.”

What’s his advice to current English Schools athletes? “Firstly stick at it because it’s a great sport and you meet lots of interesting and great people who you stay in touch with through the rest of your life. It makes a great difference to your work and educational opportunities because people and businesses respect the discipline that goes into being a serious sportsperson.”

He added: “It’s 30C out there and the sun is shining so it’s great to get out and stretch your body so my advice is to stick with it, even on the grim days in November when it’s pouring with rain. Just make the most of it.”
ECHR RULES CASTER SEMENYA DID NOT GET A FAIR HEARING – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
The double Olympic 800m champion was awarded £69,000/€80,000 in damages but she is still unable to compete over two laps. CASTER SEMENYA has won a partial victory at the European Court of Human Rights (July 10) in her ongoing seven-year legal battle against World Athletics’ sex eligibility rules. The Grand Chamber of the ECHR ruled 15-2 that the 34-year-old’s rights under Article 6 – the right to a fair hearing – had been violated by Switzerland’s Supreme Court, where SEMENYA was appealing a ruling from Court of Arbitration for Sport which found in favour of World Athletics.
The South African, who secured Olympic 800m gold medals at both London 2012 and Rio 2016, was born with differences of sexual development and hasn’t competed over two laps since World Athletics restricted testosterone levels from 400m up to the mile.
The current rules for DSD athletes require them to reduce their testosterone levels to 2.5n/mol for at least six months to compete in any female category event internationally. World Athletics argue the rules are needed to ensure fair competition and to protect the female category. Four years after SEMENYA unsuccessfully challenged World Athletics at the Switzerland-based CAS in 2019, the lower chamber of the ECHR stated her rights had been violated by the Swiss government because “it had failed to provide sufficient safeguards for her complaint to be examined effectively”. As a result, the Swiss government referred the case to the Grand Chamber. Although Europe’s top court dismissed the other aspects of the appeal filed by Semenya – Articles 8 (right to respect for private life), 13 (right to an effective remedy) and 14 (prohibition of discrimination) – she was awarded £69,000/€80,000 in damages.
The ECHR ruling cannot be appealed, meaning the case returns to the Swiss federal courts. As it solely concerns the Swiss government, this ruling from the ECHR does not impact/overturn World Athletics’ rules on DSD athletes. SEMENYA has competed sporadically – she represented South Africa in the relay at the 2023 World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Bathurst – over the last couple of years and has now gone into coaching. The South African is also a triple world and double Commonwealth champion and has claimed an incredible 21 victories on the Diamond League circuit.
