POWER OF 10 – Is still offline after being taken down on 17 January. This is statement that is currently on the UKA/British athletics website

The Power of 10, the UK’s most popular athletics rankings and results website, is taking a break for a couple of weeks, and will be temporarily offline as it completes its transition to a brand-new digital platform.
This short pause is a planned and essential part of finalising the move to the new website. No results or athlete data will be lost during this period. Performances will continue to be collected and securely collated while the site is offline and will be fully visible once the new platform goes live later this month. Its sister site www.runbritainrankings.com  will also go offline for the same period.
When The Power of 10 returns, users can expect a fresh new look alongside improved functionality and performance, delivered through a more robust platform designed to support the sport long-term. The site will retain the features and depth of data that athletes, coaches, officials and fans know and value, while also introducing a number of enhancements aimed at improving the overall user experience.
In addition, the data and functionality of the runbritainrankings site will be integrated into The Power of 10 creating an exciting one-stop-shop for athletics and running in the UK.
Darren Bennett, CEO of The Power of 10, said: “A huge amount of work has been taking place behind the scenes throughout the year, and we’re now in the final stages of moving to our new platform. The site will be back online very soon with everything users know and love, alongside a number of added extras. And it won’t stop there — once we’re live, we’ll continue to build and evolve the site, adding further functionality over time to make The Power of 10 even better for the athletics community.”

The Power of 10 would like to thank users for their patience and support during this transition. Further updates, including confirmation of the relaunch date, will be shared soon.

Keep an eye on our Power of 10 channels for updates and highlights throughout the indoor season!

THE FIRST LONG SERVICE MEETING OF THE YEAR – Some of the longer serving members of Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers had a small get together in the Essex Arms in Watford on 21 January.  PHILIP CUNNINGHAM said it was great to catch up with TONY SUNDERLAND and BRYAN SMITH who both joined SBH on 10th May 1954 – 71 years ago. Only BRENDA ATKINSON has been a member longer (1951).  Others present were ROGER SIMONS (1958), GEOFF MORPHITIS (1964), DAVE BEDFORD (1964), MARTIN GREY (1967), PHILIP CUNNINGHAM (1973) and JOHN KELLY (1979).

It was good to reminisce on many topics – some of JOYCES (JOYCE SMITH) wins (particularly when women could only run 800m), BRYAN organising numerous prestige events, trying to guess how many points NEVILLE THOMPSON won in the BAL (bet few if anyone in the country has won more), MARTINS short dalliance with TVH, DAVE saying he was SBH Club Champion in the High Jump as a young athlete (he was the only competitor) and what TONY eats to keep looking so young!  It was also an informal occasion to thank GEOFF for the input he has made to SBH over the last 50 odd years – it would be easier to list what he hasn’t done rather than what he has done for the Club!

STONEX STADIUM MEMBERSHIP – To use the StoneX Stadium facilities for training, SBH members are required to pay a fee. You can register as a member (which is free) which then entitles you to a discount. This is the link to the form to apply for membership – SBH StoneX Membership 24-07-25
EMMA GOUGE who is the Stadium Athletics and SBH Co-Ordinator had advised me that any athletes coming outside the usual Tuesday and Thursday that they can tap and go with the sum up machine in West reception or scan the QR code, which they will find on the pedestrian gate on entry. We would remind you that athletes should not come through the clubhuse without paying the entry fee. This gets picked up, not only by other athletes that pay, and find it very frustrating and unfair, but also by Saracens security system which can result in a fine, and a ban from using the facility.

SHAFTESBURY BARNET HARRIERS SUBSCRIPTIONS – The current SBH annual subscription is £90 (following the 2025 SBH AGM) and the current England Athletics annual registration from 1 April 2025 is £20. The current total is £110 and you will be advised via the SBH Membermojo system, when your subscription and EA fees are due for payment.
For new members there is also a charge for Club Kit which is £45, giving an overall total of £155.

RESULTS
Just to clarify, that the results I publish can be different to those that are shown on the Power of 10. The differences relate to seasons and personal best performances, as certain Indoor and Outdoor performances/times are totally different for some type of events. The same applies to our Master athletes,  as on the Power of 10 any season and personal best performances relate to when they become Masters (35+), I show their performances based on their current 5 year age-groups.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

Note: The ‘Power of 10’ Has been offline since last Thursday 15 January. This was the press release – Power of 10 will be offline for a couple of weeks, as it “completes its transition to a brand-new digital platform”, UKA has announced. Users “can expect a fresh new look alongside improved functionality and performance, delivered through a more robust platform designed to support the sport long-term”. The press release confirms “no results or athlete data will be lost during this period”. As part of the change, the runbritainrankings site will be integrated into Power of 10.

I believe they will be updating their ‘Rankings’ section, to be ready to incorporate the age-group changes, which take affect from 1 Apil 2026.

HOW THEY TRAIN: EMILY NEWNHAM  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

We speak to the European under-23 champion whose increased focus on the psychology of sport is producing big results. In this fast-paced digital world, there’s still a lot to be said for the humble notebook. World high jump champion and Olympic silver medallist NICOLA OLYSLAGERS is particularly well-known for her post-jump ritual which involves noting down technical advice, motivational quotes and personal reflections. European under-23 400m hurdles champion EMILY NEWNHAM has adopted a similar practice. The 21-year-old recorded a personal best and championships record of (54.08) to win gold in Bergen in July. She told AW at the time that her victory was the product of two years of rebuilding – including working with a sports psychologist on techniques to help tackle her nerves and expectations – after an agonising fourth-place finish at the 2023 European Under-20 Championships. While the process of documenting notes has proved to be effective over the last 12 months, her success, ironically, brought with it a new set of emotions to contend with.

“Everything I wanted to achieve, I achieved, so it was really weird to reach those goals and to think: ‘Oh, I did that!’,” she says. “They were things that I’d thought about for so long and all of a sudden I was ticking them off one by one, so it was really overwhelming to start with. “During the Europeans I’d written memos in my notebook and when I looked at them they really resonated with me, but when I went to the British Champs two weeks later and reopened the notebook that didn’t happen – the quotes just didn’t give me the same buzz. “I had a bit of a weird period between the Europeans (under-23s) and Worlds because of that. My training was up and down and I had to reframe my mindset; my goal at the Europeans was to win, but that wasn’t the case with the Worlds. The idea of success was different, so it was working out what success would look like in Tokyo, and what would make me feel successful. In the end I bought a brand new notebook and wrote new memos to support that goal.”

NEWNHAM, who is coached by NICK DAKIN, represented Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the European Athletics Indoor Championships (winning 4x400m silver and mixed 4x400m bronze), World Athletics Relays, European Team Championships (where she won mixed 4x400m bronze), European U23 Championships (winning 4x400m gold in addition to the 400m hurdles individual title) and World Athletics Championships in 2025; not bad for an athlete who was previously apprehensive about standing on a start line. In the process she lowered her personal best from (56.85) to (54.08). “I think my biggest learning from this year is to have belief in myself and to know how important that is,” she says. “To walk away from this year knowing that I can stand on these start lines, that I deserve to be there and that I can be competitive, that’s a big thing for me. I never imagined a world where I’d be at these events let alone that I could actually be competitive in the future. “It’s also understanding that the way I feel is completely normal and that thoughts aren’t facts; for example, just because I think something, it doesn’t mean that it’s going to happen. Knowing that thoughts are fleeting – that I can think something and let it go – that’s had a massive impact. “I’ve always said that sport is 90 per cent mental and 10 per cent physical, but now I’ve experienced that myself and I can see the results. That’s why I’ve gone so heavy on the psychology. I’m obviously doing everything I can out on the track, but it’s pointless if I don’t believe I should be there.”

TYPICAL TRAINING WEEK – NEWNHAM – whose training partners include international team-mate POPPY MALIK – is in her final year at Loughborough College studying Sports Coaching. She trains between Loughborough, Birmingham (Alexander Stadium) and Nuneaton. “A lot of our focus is on the gym right now because we need to build my strength up,” she says of her current training block. “I really didn’t like the gym before. If you’d told me that I could get all my strength from running I’d have much preferred that, but my strength and conditioning coach NICK CARD has absolutely changed my mindset and I enjoy doing the sessions now.”  In addition to scheduled gym days, NEWNHAM does core and bodyweight work (“prehab stuff”) at various points throughout the week.

Monday (am) technical session at the Alexander Stadium (indoor track): “We start with hurdle walkovers then progress to anything hurdle-based (e.g., four or five strides and drills),” she explains. “It’s actually my least favourite day of the week – I find it so tedious because I just want to run!”; (pm) gym at Loughborough
Tuesday (am) lactic tolerance session – longer reps with shorter recoveries e.g., 300m-3min recovery-300m-10min recovery-300m-3min recovery-300m
Wednesday (am) gym
Thursday (am) endurance/aerobic session currently on grass in Loughborough e.g., 90sec-90s-75sec-75sec-45sec-45sec off equal recovery
Friday (am) gym
Saturday (am) endurance/aerobic session or speed/fartlek session (grass) increasing from around 20 minutes total running at the start of the winter to around 35 minutes total running (by end of winter block)
Sunday rest day

Favourite session: “In summer it’s always my hurdles session e.g., starts to hurdle five, that’s just a nice session, but in winter it’s anything over 250m-300m. One of my favourites is a tempo-based session like 5 x 300m (off 3mins). Once you get into a rhythm and you’re flowing it just feels nice.” Least favourite session: “Three-minute surge runs; when I see that on my programme I want to cry! We jog for three minutes and NICK will shout, ‘Pick it up!’. The pick-ups range from 5-20 seconds of sprinting, so it’s just the unknown of how long you’re going to be sprinting for.”

We would remind you that athletes should not come through the clubhuse without paying the entry fee. SBH INDIVIDUAL POSITIONS AFTER 4 FIXTURES – The best 4 out of 5 points result count, these are the SBH athletes currently in the Top 10 or best placed. These are my estimations of the final position for the leading SBH runners in their respective age-groups;

Under 11 Boys – 13th DANIYAL JANMOHAMED (296 points) he has run in only 3 races, those above him have all completed 4 races. If DANIYAL runs in the final race and finishes in the top 5, he will finish the season in 2nd place.
Under 11 Girls –  1st AMELIA WILKES-TURPIE (399 points) congratulations to AMELIA who has won the title with the final race still to come, 12th ELSIE BETTRIDGE (307 points) 4 races completed, 14th LILY JANMOHAMED (293 points) he has run in only 3 races, if LILY runs the final race and finishes either 3rd or 4th she would finish 3rd. If CHARLOTTE KNIPE Saturdays winner does not run, then LILY will finish in 2nd place.
Under 13 Boys –  2nd DENNYS PASCAL (296 points), 4th HARRISON HENDERSON (289 points) both after 3 fixtures. If DENNYS runs the final race and finishes 3rd, and LUIS DA SILVA wins, then DENNYS will finish in 2nd place.
Under 13 Girls –  13th KEENYAH ADELISE (295 points) after 4 races, there are probably 3 or 4 runners that good finish above her if they run.
Under 15 Boys –  17th BEN KASPAR (515 points) after 3 races, If BEN runs the final race, and finished 6th, he will finish the season around 6th place.
Under 15 Girls –  36th LUCIA CASELENUOVO (338 points) after 2 races, if LUCIA runs the final race, she could move up 5 or 6 places.
Under 17 Men –  8th PABLO QUESADA-CARMONA (688 points) after 4 races, there are a few runners if they run the final race, then PABLO may loose a few places.
Under 17 Women –  70th POSIE SHAW (199 points) after 1 race, if POSIE runs the final race, she could move up maybe 30 places.
Under 20 Men – 6th ADAM O’GORMAN (1662 points) has only competed in 3 races. In the final race BEN MURPHY (1686) from 3 races whose best results was finishing 11th, and AIDAN O’DRISCOLL (2142) from 4 races although he had a bad result in race 2, which should be removed. Therefore it be a likely hood that ADAM could finish 3rd.
Under 20 Women – No SBH runners this season.
Senior Men Mixed – 6th JOEL PHILLIPS V45 (300 points) from 1 race, and in all probability he cannot better that position.
Senior Men – 15th FINN MACCARTHY (21119 points) after 4 races, 38th THOMAS BUTLER (1796 points) after 3 races. As the runners above THOMAS have all completed 4 races,  therefore if THOMAS wins the final race he will have (2396 points). The current leader TOM FRITH has (2369 points) and if he wins the race, and his worst finish 14th would be dropped, he will finish with(2382 points). The same scenario applies to ANDREW BARRINGTON (2346 points) and his worst finish was also 14th. Therefore providing THOMAS runs the final race, he has a 13 point buffer to play with.
Senior Women – 27th NICOLA PAYNE (863 points) after 3 races. Taking into account NICOLA’S average points total, which is (283 points), she should finish with a total of (1146 pints). Which should see her comfortably finishing in 8th place.
Masters Men 40-44 – 13th DANIEL NICHOLS (1762 points) after 3 races. If DANIEL runs the final race, he should finish with (2349 points), which see him finish aroud 5th or 6th place.
Masters Men 45-49 – 56th JOEL PHILLIPS (530 points) after 1 race.
Masters Men 50-54 – 3rd JONNY SHAW (2057 points) after 4 races, providing JONNY runs at Trent Park he should finish in 3rd place.
Masters Men 55-59 – 4th PAUL MACCARTHY (1950 points) after 4 races, providing PAUL runs at Trent Park he could finish around 10th place, as there are some 7 to 8 belowhim who have only run 3 races.
Masters Men 60-64 – 10th PHILIP CUNNINGHAM (1687 points) after 4 races, providing PHILIP runs at Trent Park he could finish around 14th place, as there are some 4 belowhim who have only run 3 races.

REQUEST FROM TEAM MANAGERS – We are asking that you reply to team managers when they contact you? It’s very difficult to select a team if the athletes don’t reply especially when we can see that they have read the text. Even if they are unavailable the team managers need to know!
