WOMEN IN SPORT WEEK – The following video features Shaftebury’s JOYCE SMITH MBE winning the first London Marathon in 1981, at the age of 43 in a personal best time of (2:29.57). JOYCE repeated her achievement by winning the 1982 London Marathon in another personal best time of (2:29.43) which is the current SBH club record.
In 1983 JOYCE was selected to run the Marathon in the World Championships in Helsinki, Finland finishing 9th (2:34.27). Her consistency was rewards with being selected for the 1984 Olympics in a warm Los Angeles, at the age of 46, finishing 11th (2:32.48).
Earlier in her career JOYCE was selected to run the 1500m at the 1972 Munich Olympics, in the heats she finished 4th (4:11.3), and in the semi-final finished 6th with her current personal best (4:09.37). These Olympics were marred when 11 of the Israeli Olympic team were taken hostage and eventually killed, along with a German police officer, by the Palestinian terrorist group ‘Black September’.

JOYCE currently holds 46 Club Records, 23 Track, 21 Road and 2 in Relays and her final record was set in 2003. Video – https://www.facebook.com/londonmarathon/videos/10155043877249748/

POLE VAULT SUMMER CAMP  We would like to offer our pole vault summer camps to anyone that would like to attend. We know that clubs are always looking for pole vaulters to help them score points and that they don’t always have either the facilities or a coach to help them do this at their local track. Our two day intensive camps are suitable for anyone from beginners to more experienced vaulters, and are being held on 14/15 and 21/22 August.
Myself and former National Coach Mentor – ELLIE SPAIN, lead on the camps and have assistant coaches to support us over the two days.
https://www.westlondontrackandfield.com/events/
We also welcome coaches on to the camp that want to learn how to coach the event or expand on their current knowledge of coaching pole vault.
If you have any questions, please let me know – RICH HUMBY on 07837839996.

WORLD PARA ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIP– Head coach PAULA DUNN reflects on the success of some of this year’s GB World Para Athletics Championships team-members and looks ahead to the London event
Five years after watching many rising British stars shine at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, PAULA is proud to see HANNAH COCKCROFT, ALED DAVIES and JONNIE PEACOCK among those leading the GB team for next month’s World Para Athletics Championships back in the UK capital.
A 51-strong squad has been named for the event in London, to be held from July 14-23, and she is pleased with the mix of both youth and experience.
“I’m really happy with the team selection,” says the former sprinter, who became GB para athletics head coach in November 2012 and was a key member of PETER ERIKSSON’S coaching staff at the London Paralympics. “When I look at athletes like JONNIE, ALED and HANNAH, they were in the first group of athletes I looked after when I started.
“To have seen them in 2012 winning medals and to go right through to Rio and then come back to the London Stadium once again is absolutely brilliant. “They are now our senior athletes and they are really good role models.”
A total of 21 Rio Paralympic medallists, including 10 champions, will be joined at the London Stadium by a quartet of debutants – T13 sprinter and jumper ZAK SKINNER, T20 athlete MARTINA BARBER, T38 runner JACK GLADMAN and T42 long jumper LUKE SINNOTT – who will pull on the senior GB vest for the first time.
Among those 10 Rio gold medallists are COCKCROFT, DAVIES, PEACOCK and RICHARD WHITEHEAD, all of whom also topped the podium at the London Paralympics five years ago and will be hoping for similar success at the same venue in the coming weeks.
Since stepping into her current role, on a world level DUNN’S GB teams have won no fewer than 29 medals, including 11 gold, at the 2013 Championships in Lyon, and 31 medals, including 13 gold, in Doha in 2015. This time the target is 26 to 30 medals.
“Success breeds success and I’m a great believer in that,” DUNN explains. “So people coming into the team know what the expectation is. “I want everybody to compete as well as they can and enjoy the experience. If you do those two things, success generally comes.”
