MATTHEW HALL – Congratulations as his time of (8.37) in winning the U20 Hertfordshire Indoor 60m Hurdles title was a new Championship Record, the old record of (8.40) had stood since 2008 to Zak Saudee.

DAVID STONE – It is with good news that I report on the progress of David. 15 months ago he sustained osteochodritis dissicans (prevalent to boys aged 11-14) which meant he had spent 7-8 months in a wheelchair or on crutches. His first comeback race was the London Borough of Barnet Mini Marathon trial on 28 February (18.30), and on the 15 March he came first in the Starfish Charity 5k (18.06). David is now back training with Jeremy Sothcott’s group.

GEORGIA BELL – This article appeared in Athletics Weekly recently.

Having enjoyed a big improvement last year to run 2:03.38 and 4:18.75 over 800m and 1500m, 21-year-old Georgia Bell credits a move to be coached by Trevor Painter for her resurgence in form.

The Shaftesbury Barnet athlete achieved a lot as a youngster, winning the English Schools as an under-15 and clocking 2:08.81, which put her eighth on the UK all-time list, and claiming silver in the same championships as an under-17 in 2009.

“I surprised everyone including myself when I ran 2:08,” she said. “But then a build-up of several small things set me back. I changed coaches, but then my new coach unfortunately retired six months before I went to university. After this I lost my direction in athletics and my enjoyment of the sport.”

However, after starting studying geography at the University of Birmingham, her friend and training partner Leah Barrow (a 2:05.45 800m runner) introduced her to Painter, so Georgia travels to Wigan once a month to train as part of a strong training group, including Painter’s wife Jenny Meadows, Hayley Mills and Kirsten McAslan.

“I feel very lucky to now have found a place in Trevor’s group, which has put me back on track and made me fall back in love with athletics,” she says. “There are so many talented athletes in the group challenging you and pushing you on. I always leave feeling stronger.”

The rest of the time, Georgia links up with Bud Baldaro’s group in Birmingham for grass sessions or adapts her training sessions so she can train with other athletes at the university.

Georgia’s renewed enthusiasm for athletics led to a silver in the England Athletics Under-23 Championships and a bronze in the BUCS Championships in 2014, along with an improvement in her times. “The formula was simple: just consistent training, speedy sessions and a training partner, Leah, to motivate me and make training enjoyable and sociable again,” she says.

“Last season was really exciting for me because I only began training properly in January and almost every time I raced I got a PB. Seeing how much I was improving in such a short amount of time gave me the confidence for big races.”

Having started the indoor season running well, Georgia is targeting BUCS and the England Athletics Under-23 Championships. “It’s my last year at university so I hope I can improve on my bronze at BUCS from last year and hopefully just as competitive.

She also has half an eye on gaining selection for the European Under-23 Championships in Tallinn. “I’m not far off the qualifying time (2:02.50), but there are so many talented British girls capable of qualifying.

“It will definitely be a challenge, but I’d like to think it’s in my sights,” she explains modestly.

Georgia is looking into going to the United States on an athletics scholarship post-university. It is an environment she thinks she would enjoy. “I’ve always liked running because it’s so sociable,” she says.

“Training well in a group is one of the best feelings and it’s one of the times I’m at my happiest.” She adds: “I definitely want to dedicate the next chapter of my life to athletics.”

Georgia has had a successful 2015 indoor season, winning the Southern Senior Championships and BUCS Championships. In the Sainsbury’s Indoor British Championships she won a well-deserved bronze medal with an indoor personal best (2:07.12) which ranks her UK No.7 U23 in 2015.

ENGLAND ATHLETICS CONSULTATION MEETING – We would like as many SBH members as possible to attend. The meeting Is being held for the London Region on the evening (7.00pm to 9.30pm) of Monday 30 March at the University of London Meeting Rooms, University of London Union, Malet Street, London WC1E 7H. We are very keen that as many London – based clubs as possible are able to send representatives, and have chosen the location in order to make it as simple as possible for all clubs to get there.

You may well have seen from the England Athletics website (http://www.englandathletics.org/Consultation) that England Athletics staff, board members and councillors will be meeting at venues across England’s nine regions to explain the services, benefits and resources that make up the England Athletics Club Support Package.

The meetings will be an opportunity for volunteers, athletes and others involved in the sport to feed back their views on where England Athletics should be focusing support, what they value and where they would like to see increased or decreased investment. It will also be an opportunity to hear more about England Athletics’ new commercial partnerships and some of the benefits to members that have arisen from these.

The events will also form part of the development of a longer-term strategy for England Athletics and it is essential we hear from club and county representatives, coaches, officials, athletes, parents and teachers on how they wish to see the sport succeed in years to come so that the strategy can reflect the views and needs of the sport. These events are your chance to tell us what is on your minds and to debate issues in an open forum.

Of course, the London event is also an opportunity for you to discuss matters that directly affect clubs, athletes and volunteers in London and meet your representatives on the London council. We very much hope that you or colleagues from the club will be able to attend on March 30th.

In order for us to plan for the event, we would like you to register by email at consultation2015@englandathletics.org with your name, club and your role within the club. The event is open to absolutely everybody, no matter what role you occupy within your club, so athletes, volunteers, officials, coaches and committee members are all welcome. More detailed joining instructions will be sent to those who have registered. If you are not the correct person for us to be contacting for your club, we apologise and ask that you please forward this e mail as appropriate and let us know where communications of this sort should be directed in future.
