BIG PLANS FOR MINI LONDON MARATHONS FUTURE  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph taken at the start by MARK SHEARMAN.

Young athletes on Saturday will receive £10 each for school equipment and maybe even a medal from ELIUD KIPCHOGE as organisers hope to build entries to a whopping 50,000 by 2030. For years, the Mini London Marathon has been one of the best-kept secrets in British sport. Taking place early in the morning on the main London Marathon race day, it is often overshadowed by the big event and receives minimal coverage in comparison to the elite athlete and charity-fundraising exploits of the runners tackling 26.2 miles. This could change this weekend, though, as the race switches to Saturday 1 October. It means not only will the youngsters enjoy the spotlight to themselves 24 hours before the ‘main marathon’ takes place but they will receive their medals from ELIUD KIPCHOGE, who will be in London this weekend as a Mini Marathon ambassador six days after breaking the world marathon record in Berlin. Around 7000 young runners are set to take part on Saturday. Coincidentally this is the same number of people who registered to run the first-ever London Marathon in 1981.

London Marathon race director HUGH BRASHER believes the main London Marathon can accommodate 50,000 runners in 2023 or 2024 and his ambitious goal is for the Mini London Marathon to feature the same number of entries in eight years’ time when London celebrates its 50th anniversary. Saturday’s races will feature the usual battle between nationwide regional teams and teams from London Boroughs but there will also be a mass participation element with distances ranging from one mile to 2.6km with races ending on The Mall. In addition, thousands more are completing a virtual Mini London Marathon at schools around the UK. BRASHER believes it is also the only running event in the world where every child is paid to participate, as each entrant will receive £10 paid to their school to spend on sports or computer equipment courtesy of the sponsor Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). If plans to increase participation numbers to 50,000 by 2030 come off, it means schools in the UK could benefit from £500,000. As part of its renewed deal with London Marathon, BBC says it will cover the event as well.

Train strikes on Saturday are threatening to spoil the fun but both Mini Marathoners and runners trying to get to London for Sunday’s main race. But BRASHER says most regional teams will travel to the venue by coach, whereas athletes representing London Boroughs are in the capital anyway and will be able to get the Tube or DLR.Ben Dijkstra (Mark Shearman)

Last year’s winners included JESS BAILEY and the Irish middle-distance prodigy NICK GRIGGS. But participants over the years read like a who’s who of British endurance sport with MO FARAH having raced in it several times, plus wheelchair racers DAVID WEIR and SHELLY WOODS, triathletes ALISTAIR and JONNY BROWNLEE, ALEX YEE and NON STANFORD, together with current track stars like LAURA MUIR, EILISH MCCOLGAN, KEELY HODGKINSON, JAKE WIGHTMAN and JOSH KERR. Even one of the England football Lionesses who is starting Sunday’s event, JILL SCOTT, is a former winner of the Mini London Marathon back in 2001. “We have incredible heritage in this event,” says BRASHER. “We now believe it is singularly the most important thing since my father and JOHN DISLEY started the event in 1981.”Mini London Marathon. BRASHER added: “Our children are in crisis, with shocking statistics showing falling activity levels, increasing childhood obesity and mental health issues. We all know how getting active can improve physical and mental health and London Marathon Events is working with a range of partners to inspire children across the UK to get more active.”

THE LIDDIARD TROPHY HISTORY  The following article featured on the Queen’s Park Harriers website. This years takes place on Saturday 5 November at Fryent Country Park in Kingsbury.
The Liddiard Trophy is a prestigious and historic cross country fixture hosted annually by Queen’s Park Harriers at Fryent Country Park in Kingsbury. Clubs from all over London compete for the famous prize which commemorates Mr E.J. Liddiard (pictured right), the longest-surviving founder member of the club. He was one of a group of pupils at St Jude’s Institute who decided to create a sports club involving athletics and football among other activities (The footballers, incidentally, would end up breaking away and merging with Christ Church Rangers to form the modern-day Queen’s Park Rangers). He was with the club up until his death in 1946. In his honour, the Hoops held the inaugural Liddiard Trophy meet in 1947. The race was won by Shaftesbury Harriers (later becoming Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers). This club which would go on to have a storied history with the event, winning it several times in the 1970s and 1980s, fielding teams littered with internationals. At its height, the meet attracted around 300 competitors.

The race With eight to score and three individuals allowed per team, the Liddiard is a team event which has arguably one of the most eye-catching prizes in UK athletics, a solid silver depiction of a runner, complete in casing. The trophy has been awarded to the winning team since the race’s inception, with the victors able to take the prize home for the year.

The people While victory is the goal for some, the race itself is a reminder of the selflessness of the running community.  Take Cecil Gittins, a man who joined Queen’s Park Harriers in the same year of Liddiard’s death, 1946. Up until his passing a few of years ago, he was still an active member of club, attending committee meetings and keeping the Hoops moving along. And if you plan to be around on race day, be sure to look out for Peter Hunt, another Liddiard contemporary, who helped to rescue Queen’s Park Harriers from folding essentially on his own in the early 1970s. Still a member, Peter comes down every year from his current home in South Wales to oversee the Liddiard to ensure its smooth running.

CHALLENGING PARISIAN OLYMPIC MARATHON ROUTE REVEALED  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
Don’t expect fast times on the Olympic course in the French capital, with over a thousand feet of elevation on 26.2 mile route. The marathon course for the Paris Olympics in 2024 has been revealed and it will be one of the toughest courses in recent memory. The 26.2 mile journey starts at Hotel de Ville and ends at Les Invalides, taking in sites such as the Eiffel Tower, The Louvre and Versailles. Athletes will be tested with the highest point of the course reaching 600ft at the 20.3km mark. The total elevation from start to finish is a staggering 1584ft. The course has been inspired by “la marche des femmes” (the Women’s March on Versailles), when in 1789 thousands of women walked from the Paris City Hall to Versailles to put pressure on King Louis XVI to establish constitutional rights for French citizens. Due to the march, he subsequently ratified the Universal Declaration of Rights of Man and of the Citizen, just months after the French Revolution. The men’s and women’s marathons will take place on August 10 and 11, 2024, the last two days of the next Olympics. It will be the first time that the women’s marathon is held on the final day of the Games.

“The athletes, the thousands of spectators and millions of television viewers will experience a special line-up of iconic sites, from France’s capital to Versailles, through the emblematic landscapes of Ile-de-France,” said Head of the Paris Organising Committee TONY ESTANGUET. “In this exceptional setting, the athletes will also take on a sporting challenge of unprecedented difficulty thanks to a tough course with significant climbs.” “Beyond a doubt, the Paris 2024 marathon will have something special about it,” said double Olympic marathon champion and world record-holder ELIUD KIPCHOGE. “To perform in such an impressive setting, in a place so charged with history and symbolism, will be a unique experience. I could not ask for a more perfect race for the Games.”

Over 40,000 members of the public will be given the opportunity to run the entire course, plus a 10km stretch, after the Games. “With its unprecedented course, the Paris 2024 Marathon represents great sporting challenge for the athletes, in a spectacular setting,” said former women’s world record-holder PAULA RADCLIFFE.

LLOYD COWAN BURSARY OPEN FOR COACHES AND YOUNG ATLETES  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
Former SBH member LLOYD COWAN passed away on 11 January 2021, of Covid-19 at the relatively young age of 58. He unfortunately had underlying medical issues having recently suffered a stroke. LLOYD competed for us in the BAL in the mid-90’s. He set a club record for the 110m Hurdles with (13.75) in 1994 which is still 3rd on the SBH all-time list. He then moved up to 400m Hurdles and in 1995 ran (50.79) for 6th on the current SBH all-time list. LLOYD had his greatest success in coaching CHRISTINE OHURUOGU to Olympic Gold and countless other medals in International Championships.

Grants of up to £500 will be awarded to athletics coaches and to unfunded athletes with potential, aged between 16 and 23, for whom cost is a barrier to accessing developmental opportunities in athletics. The application window closes 23:59 on October 13. The selection process will take place the following week when the Grants Committee will meet to consider every submission. Decisions will be confirmed by the end of October. Sixty percent of UK-wide applicants received grants in the first edition of the award in 2021. European under-18 medallists TENDAI NYABADZA [1500m], REBECCA GRIEVE [Girls Medley Relay] and under-17 indoor 60mH British record-holder JAIDEN DEAN were among the first athlete recipients. GWENNAN LEWIS and ANITA RICHARDSON, who guides under-20 talent Success Eduan, were two of the coaches to receive awards. View the LLOYD COWAN Bursary guidance and application forms for athletes and coaches here.

The Lloyd Cowan Bursary was set up in memory of LLOYD COWAN MBE, who believed that no one with sporting potential should be held back by lack of support and opportunities. The Bursary awards grants of up to £500 once a year, both to qualified coaches and to unfunded athletes, aged 16-23, for whom cost is a barrier to accessing developmental opportunities in athletics.  LLOYD was an international athlete before hanging up his spikes and becoming one of the UK’s most successful coaches. He guided many leading British sprinters, including World, Olympic and Commonwealth 400m champion CHRISTINE OHURUOGU and European 110m hurdles champion ANDY TURNER. Tragically LLOYD died in January 2021, aged 58, after contracting COVID-19.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.
