Which takes place at the Olympic Stadium on 14-15 July.
The GB team will face the United States, South Africa, Poland, France, China, Germany and Jamaica.
BRITISH ATHLETICS LEAGUE PREMIERSHIP – Took place at Bedford on Saturday 7 July.
In very hot conditions, a strong SBH team turning out at Bedford for the BAL BIG BASH where all 5 divisions of the BAL, with 38 teams in total, compete at the same venue on the same day. The meeting started at 10.00 with the long jump without DANIEL BRAMBLE, who had to drop out having been picked for GB&NI World Cup team this coming weekend at the London Stadium, was replaced at the last minute by high jumper LEWIS MCGUIRE.
The 3000m was high standard race with JAKE SHELLEY having a real battle with PHIL NORMAN from Woodford to come 2nd in a really tight finish. PHILLIP CROUT ran a clever tactical race to win the “B” string from Birchfield. Returning to the field, SCOTT LINCOLN was in good form winning the shot with his second best throw of the year ably supported by GREG THOMPSON with 2nd place in the “B”.
The BAL record was broken in the 100m where DEJI TOBIAS from Windsor ran 10.21. The Premiership gave CONFIDENCE LAWSON 2nd place in a 3 man blanket finish. The discus boys were in good form as NICK PERCY threw a SB to beat the British Champion Brett Morse by over 6m and GREG THOMPSON winning the “B” by over 10m. The triple jump was another top class competition with a SB victory from NATHAN FOX and a SB 2nd place for ADE MASON (formerly ADEFOLALU). The pole vault was an event of extremes as ETHAN WALSH cleared a SB for a fine 2nd place while CLYDE GORDON cleared the opening height to secure the points. The 3k steeplechase was difficult on the day, as top man MARK PEARCE was diagnosed with sunstroke and was unable to run but up-stepped PHILLIP CROUT to make his steeplechase debut and secured 5th place in the “B” after GLEN WATTS got 4th place in the “A”.
The “A” string 800m marked the retirement race for 47 year old ANTHONY WHITEMAN after 18 seasons of club membership and 40 BAL Premiership races as well as 2 European Champion Clubs matches as Team Captain. A full appreciation of ANTONY’S career with SBH will follow later in the season.
The hammer was another great points contributor with CHRIS BENNETT producing another consistent series for “A” string victory whilst NICK PERCY picked up the runners-up spot in the “B” string. Late substitutes were required in the 1500m and once more valuable points were secured when PHILLIP CROUT stepped up yet again as did TOM BUTLER with a SB. What a day for PHILLIP who ran a total 7500m in 3 races and collected 24 points.
The 110m hurdles marked the return to the event for EDSON GOMES with a quality PB after recovering from a career ending injury 12 months ago, for a fine 2nd place in the “B” string whilst DANIEL REES ran a SB in the “A”. LEWIS MCGUIRE was 3rd in the high jump whilst DANIEL REES cleared an excellent SB just 1cm below his PB.
The sprinters came good in the 200m, where CONFIDENCE LAWSON ran his 2nd fastest ever legal time for 2nd place whilst JAMAL-MARCUS RHODEN-STEVENS was 3rd in the “B”. DANIEL BAINBRIDGE, our top U20 and UK Junior number 1, finished 5th with DANIEL REES stepping in at the last moment to cover the “B” string. Overall, DANIEL REES not only competed in his 2 main hurdles events, but also scored valuable points in 3 further events.
The relay teams were solid team performances with JEROME LULE and LOUIS OCTAVE making their BAL debuts in the 400m also running in the relays. It was good to see KYLE LANGFORD back from injury and running a solid second leg in the 4 x 400m relay. The closeness of the final result just goes to prove that every point counts. Well done the team as we now look forward to being even better for the final match on Saturday 4 August at Allianz Park.

CHRIS BENNETT AND NICK PERCY REFLECT ON THE UK AND EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS – The following interview featured on the Scottish Athletics website. Photograph shows CHRIS with his UK Silver Medal.
There was a Scottish 2-3 in the Hammer Throw, with CHRIS BENNETT ensuring Euro selection with his silver medal from a throw of 73.29, having twice previously thrown beyond the 74m qualifying mark.
He said: “Ideally I would have like to have won, but it’s nice to get automatic qualifying for once and not have to leave it in the selectors’ hands and wait for an invite. I think the three of us, MARK DRY, NICK MILLER and me spur each other on, one of us throws far, we all want to beat each other.
“I’ve got a nice solid block of training in, I’m fit and healthy as I can be, so it’s just compete now up until Berlin.”
The first Scottish podium place in the UK championship went to NICK PERCY in the discus, taking bronze, though his 57.26 throw left him short of Euros qualification. He said: “It was a bit of a struggle, being sick the last two weeks, I’ve not got anything really behind me. I did my best, fought my hardest, but unfortunately today just wasn’t my day.
“I feel like it was my best I could do but I still have time to try and get the qualifying distance … so there’s some hope, but I could’ve done better today.”

PHOTOGRAPH’S – From time to time we have photographs of our members taken at meetings or presentations which we would like to use both on the website or incorporated within our report to our local newspaper. Can you please let me know if you do NOT want your photograph to be used. Also I would appreciate if you could send me any photographs, which I can then publish on the website and newsletter.
FACEBOOK – Photographs can be found on the SBH page.
CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION – Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November last year “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.
On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.
