CLUBS LOSE ABILITY TO VOTE AFTER UKA MEMBERS EGM – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
Changes to the Articles of Association at the national governing body means clubs will have a non-voting presence in future meetings. Athletics clubs will have a non-voting role at UKA Members meetings in future after an EGM on Friday 28 January. The governing body said: “UKA is pleased to confirm that following the UKA Members’ EGM that was held this morning the proposed changes that were outlined here received the required number of votes for those changes to be agreed. The revised Articles of Association will shortly be published on the UKA website and at Companies House.” This follows a strong letter from the newly-formed Athletics Research Group (ARG) on the AW website last week urging clubs to oppose the change.

JASON GARDENER, President of UKA, said: “I am very pleased that these changes have been agreed and that I hope we can now look forward and continue to work together for the benefit of athletics in the UK.” But TONY SHIRET from ARG said: “It is obviously a very disappointing outcome. The irony of the vote is that UK Sport will think that the war is over whereas they have just increased the resentment and made their brand even more toxic.” UKA felt the clubs will be represented via the home country athletics federations and the changes mean the UKA Members meetings will include the following:

Voting members:
President (1)
Vice President (1)
Officials’ representative (1)
Coaching representative (1)
Athletes’ commission representative – non disabled athlete (1)
Athletes’ commission representative – para athlete (1)
England Athletics representative (3)
Scottish Athletics representative (1)
Welsh Athletics representative (1)
Athletics NI representative (1)

Non-voting members:
First track and field club elected representative (0)
Second track and field club elected representative (0)
Road running representative (0)

MARILYN OKORO AND WENDY SLY JOIN UKA BOARD – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Olympians MARILYN OKORO and WENDY SLY will join the UK Athletics board as non-executive directors from February 1. OKORO a member of Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers, competed in the 800m and won 4x400m bronze at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, whereas SLY won Olympic 3000m silver at the 1984 LA Games and is the current managing director at AWOKORO has also run (1:58.45) – a time that ranks her No.10 on the UK all-time 800m rankings – and outside of competition she is highly regarded in championing mental health, social mobility and athlete welfare, in addition to being a graduate of an accredited programme in corporate governance.  SLY, meanwhile, also won the world 10km title during her career and she has enjoyed a successful career in publishing and continues to serve the sport in roles including team management, athlete mentoring and has previously served a term on the board of England Athletics.

BEATTIE said: “On behalf of the board I would like to welcome MARILYN and WENDY into these crucial non-executive roles and look forward to us benefitting from the experience they will bring to UKA. “The quality of applications for these roles was very impressive and I would like to thank all the shortlisted candidates for their interest and engagement in this process as without exception all were of an incredibly high standard. “The composition of the board is essential for the success of the organisation and I am delighted with the mix of expertise around the table. I have no doubt they will provide excellent support and guidance for the leadership team in what is an exciting year for athletics.”

OKORO said: “I am elated to have been appointed to the board of UKA. As an athlete you want to be involved and help the sport and I am thrilled with this opportunity. The sport is in my blood, and I hope that I can help bridge the gap between the board and the sport and provide an athlete voice. “I am excited by the joined-up approach outlined by Athletics Unified as I know when the sport collaborates and works together great things can happen. It’s an exciting time to be involved and I look forward to working with Ian and the rest of the board of UKA.”

SLY added: “I’m thrilled to be involved in a new era, not just for UKA but for the whole sport in the UK. I’ve spent 50 years of my life in the sport that I love and I am honoured to have this opportunity to join the board at this exciting time. “I’ve been privileged to have been involved with team management, and mentoring athletes over the years, so I hope that I can continue to be a familiar face to everyone in the sport and be an approachable figure on the board. “There have been quite a few changes in the last couple of years and it is great to be part of the new look UKA board that really reflects and has a connection with the sport.”

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

SPORTS COUNCIL MOVES TO REDUCE INFLUENCE OF CLUBS – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

MIKE HEATH and TONY SHIRET from the Athletics Research Group say an EGM later this month could result in clubs losing their power to vote at UKA meetings.
Following discussion between us and the UKA Chair, IAN BEATTIE, and following letters to Mr BEATTIE and UK Sport’s Chair, UKA has published details of the proposals it plans to make at an Extraordinary General Meeting on January 28. While this is a welcome step forward, we believe it was unlikely to have happened without our intervention.
Read More: Statement on UKA Members EGM
Readers can see for themselves that the proposals will reduce their clubs’ influence on decisions that directly affect them and reduce any meaningful oversight over UKA following a period when its Executive Management and Board have clearly failed to improve UKA performance. Under the proposed changes the three current club representatives will have their votes removed and their status reduced to non-voting members. The Home Country Athletics Federations of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will have half of the voting rights instead of one third previously.
We believe that these changes have been proposed because UK Sport has written to the Chair of UKA requiring changes to the UKA constitution (its Articles) by the end of the month. We also believe that these changes have been linked to funding decisions.

Currently UKA has a new Chair, IAN BEATTIE, an Acting CEO and a new Senior Independent Director. So, it appears that the UK Sport is trying to force through changes with a new UKA Management Team. Additionally, there has been no public information until today (Jan 21), seven days before the decision, on these proceedings. Fundamental issues concerning the governance of the sport are being decided effectively in secret. The Members of UKA – the 12 people who effectively “own” UKA on behalf of various interests – HCAFs, coaches, clubs, officials etc – are restricted by confidentiality agreements set out in their Code of Conduct from discussing these matters outside UKA meetings. Without our intervention we think it unlikely that there would have been any public discussion before the decisions had been made.
Under existing arrangements, the 12 Members of UKA include elected representatives of the clubs, coaches, officials, road runners as well as the HCAFs and some other appointees. The elected reps can currently block changes to the constitution under UK Company Law. They function as the “conscience of the sport” through their meetings (formerly known as the UK Members’ Council or UKA Members) and review the UKA Board’s actions and in recent times have become effective at doing so – for example identifying that the loss of the UK’s second Diamond League Meeting (and its associated revenue) was not as described in the UKA Accounts and carried out without the UKA Board’s prior agreement.
Clubs may be surprised that control of UKA is effectively being handed to the HCAFs. After a consultation in 2021 the English clubs voted decisively against this option. So, the current proposals appear to be the opposite of what the sport more widely voted for.

The proposed action by UKA and UK Sport follows the Street Review and the resulting Change Plan endorsed by UKA and UK Sport in 2020. To date proposed changes to the ownership and governance of UKA have ignored probably the most important requirement of the Street Review and the Change Plan for a review of the purpose and effectiveness of the UKMC and have largely been driven to produce the result that UK Sport appears to be trying to achieve again. UKA has again declined to carry out that review (despite us specifically asking its Chair to do so) and the statement that “approval will allow us to meet the final outstanding requirement of the UK Athletics Change Plan which followed the Dame Sue Street report” is just not true in our opinion.
Why does this matter to clubs?
Club representatives will not hold voting rights on the revised UK Members effectively being relegated to second-class citizens on that body. It holds clubs powerless to resist changes UKA might wish to make in conjunction with HCAFs for example to raise more revenue directly from the membership.
In a sport that requires the support of huge amount of voluntary time with clubs at its centre, the funding bodies are saying ‘we matter but you don’t’.
Given the whole Plan was supposed to be ushering in a new collaborative culture in athletics, marginalising its stakeholders through a process surrounded until now in secrecy enforced by confidentiality agreements hardly seems the brave new world envisaged.
The idea that clubs are better placed with direct relationships with HCAFs is questionable when UKA controls rules, licensing, welfare, safeguarding, health and safety, competition, coaching and officiating.

We invite you to use your voices to let UK Sport and UKA know that with three major championships on the horizon why does the UK body ostensibly promoting sport seem so keen on diverting the new UKA management team away from delivering the performances that will get athletics back on the front foot in performance and attractiveness and may well help deliver the necessary commercial investment the sport so badly needs? Why cannot both of them just do the necessary options appraisal and consultation envisaged (properly this time, with all options being considered including no change) so that decisions are reached with the openness and transparency promised?
Please let UKA and the members of UKMC know that they have your support in pushing back against UK Sport on this matter.
Time for your input is short and this is your last chance to have meaningful involvement.
UKA can be reached at: mdraisey@uka.org.uk
UK Sport can be reached at: info@uksport.gov.uk
The UKA website lists the current Members on this link here.
In particular you might like to ask UKA and UK Sport:
Where is the rationale for such changes?
Why has UK Sport been so keen to implement them in the absence of the processes the Plan set out?
What will happen if UKA Members reject any such proposals?
Will anyone see the letter UK Sport has sent to UKA?
How does UK Sport rationalise its “do this or else approach” compared to the required changes in culture that were supposed to be delivered by their review and plan?

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. RON PICKERING MEMORIAL FUND GRANT AWARDS 2022 2022 marks the 31st year of RON PICKERING Memorial Fund Grants to young athletes. In the more than 30 years since the death of the renowned Coach and Commentator in February of 1991, the RPMF has been able to support thousands of young athletes with Grants totalling more than £2million.
Like many other charities, the impact of the Covid Pandemic on our Fundraising activities over the past years has been very difficult for the RPMF. In what continued to be a difficult year for all athletes with uncertainties around Covid and competitions, we received over 450 applications during October and November of 2021.  After much deliberation, the RPMF was able to award a total amount of nearly £40,000 in grants to 178 talented young British athletes.

Among the grant recipients this year were a number of young athletes that made a major step forward in 2021, including European Under 23 Champions ISOBEL BOFFEY and JEREMIAH AZU, and European U20 Champions ED FAULDS, and MEGAN KEITH who come on strong at the end of the year to take the European Cross-Country title.
This year it is pleasing for us to see 19 awards to athletes with a disability, slightly more that 10% of the total awards, including grants to Race-Runners Gavin Drysdale and Thomas Talbot.

With good distribution around the country and almost 100 clubs with athletes receiving 2022 RPMF Grants, the highest number of awards went to members of Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers with 10 recipients, including European Junior Bronze Medallist HENRY MCLUCKIE. The full list is, DOMINIC ASHWELL, DANIEL BAINBRIDGE, BRAD DAVIES-PUGHE, ALANNAH FASHANU, JOSH FAULDS, KRISTIAN IMROTH, MARLI JESSOP, HENRY MCLUCKIE, CALVIN SMITH and JOSH WOODS.

SOS – SAVE OUR SCHOOLS – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
The English Schools Athletic Association again finds itself without a sponsor and in financial crisis as its centenary anniversary looms, writes CHRIS COHEN.

Schools Athletics is rightly held to be a hugely important part of the landscape of the sport in England and across the UK. The centenary of the English Schools Athletic Association (ESAA) is fast approaching, having been founded in 1925 by foresighted teachers and with the support of members of parliament, aristocrats and even a future king. The Duke of York, later to become King George VI, was the first President of the organisation and took an active part in its founding, with Lords Desborough, Lonsdale, Castlerosse and Percy as Vice Presidents. Although we no longer have royal patronage, the Association is still entirely volunteer-led with nobody in the organisation taking any salary from its activities, but a large group of teachers and retired teachers still working for the benefit of young athletes and their love of the sport.

Covid has brought many organisations to their knees – and it could herald the end for the ESAA. Despite working incredibly hard to produce an amazing championship under difficult circumstances in 2021, despite not receiving any sponsorship funding from their title sponsor, New Balance, which had its own challenges, and receiving reduced funding over the previous couple of years from England Athletics, the future looks bleak. New Balance has announced that their sponsorship agreement for funding the track & field and cross-country championships will not be renewed. Many people who understand these things agree that the senior sport in this country would not have been so successful over the years had it not been for the existence of the ESAA. Valuable work has been done in recent years highlighting the high numbers of athletes who competed at the Schools Championships and went on to both represent their country but also to win medals at the highest level, at Olympics and World Championships, as well as those who have gone on to be successful in other sports.

The first of these was MARY MILNE, who won the English Schools high jump title in 1925 and went on to finish fourth at the 1934 British Empire Games (forerunner of the Commonwealth Games) with the same height as the bronze medallist. Two years later the first ESAA champion won an Olympic medal, also in high jump. This was DOROTHY ODAM, who later won an Empire Games gold and went on to hold the world record at 1.66m. The first Olympic champions from the English Schools Championships were MARY BIGNAL (later RAND) and ANN PACKER, who each won gold in Tokyo in 1964. In 1976 the first athlete from the Schools’ Championship won Olympic gold in another sport, when DANNY NIGHTINGALE won gold in the modern pentathlon. When the sport started holding World Championships, ESAA was quickly represented among the champions when DALEY THOMPSON and, a day later, STEVE CRAM, won gold in the first edition in Helsinki in 1983. In addition to track & field and cross-country championships, the first Combined Events Championships was held in 1988, with KATH MERRY winning the junior event and then going on to Olympic 400m bronze behind CATHY FREEMAN at Sydney 2000. In total, 135 ESAA athletes have won European Championship medals, 35 of them gold; 278 have won medals at British Empire or Commonwealth Games, of which 81 have won gold. ESAA has produced fourteen Olympic champions and 77 medallists, with Mo Farah the most recent, as well as 71 World Championship medals, of which 13 were gold, the most recent being DINA ASHER-SMITH and KATARINA JOHNSON-THOMPSON in 2019.

The effects of the loss of a title sponsor will be hard-hitting. The track & field championships, normally held over two days, require the athletes to arrive and stay as a county team, meaning that almost 2000 athletes and their team staff need accommodation for two nights, along with over a hundred technical officials. ESAA has always subsidised the cost of accommodation for the athletes, meaning that well over £100,000 is spent annually on hotel costs, leaving the athletes to find another £100,000 plus. Clearly, the overnight stays could be reduced or removed but this would take away the huge educational benefits for all the young people and especially the first away-from-home experience for young athletes taking their first steps into sport that could take them to higher levels. Many top-class athletes talk fondly of their first experience at the championships and what they learned by being away from home in a team setting. KEELY HODGKINSON was recently asked what the English Schools Championships did for her career. Her answer gives some idea of their importance. “The English Schools Athletics Association Championships was always the first thing I would put on my annual competition calendar each year as a young developing athlete,” she said. “It’s basically the Olympics for kids! “I loved my experience at this competition over the years. It was the first time I felt like a real athlete as we stayed overnight with the team and I had to learn how to prepare for heats and finals. I also had to learn new skills like knowing when to focus and when to relax, when to eat and what to eat and to communicate with others and make new friends. “All these things have stood me in good stead for when I then went on to represent Great Britain & NI at junior level and then senior teams. The English Schools ‘Kids’ Olympics’ fuelled my desire to make the actual Olympics.”

Other than the Track & Field Championships, ESAA also hosts an annual cross-country championship (on March 19 this year in Kent) with six races of over 300 athletes in each from all 45 counties and areas of the country, from the Isle of Wight to the Isle of Man, from Cornwall to Cumbria, a Combined Events Championship, again with all three age groups represented by up to 45 athletes in each event, a much bigger turn-out than any other similar national event. On the same weekend, the national Race Walk Championships are held, giving athletes in all aspects of the sport an opportunity to test themselves against their peers and to vie for an opportunity to gain selection for the English Schools teams at the Home International events that are an important part of the calendar and, in years when the World Games take place, to be at the pinnacle of schools’ athletics.

In fact, England are the world champions, having achieved this status when the boys finished second to Brazil and the girls’ teams won their team competition. They were also runners-up in the most recent edition of the World Schools Cross-Country Championship. Representation at the top level is not all that ESAA stands for though, and, in fact, its Schools Cup competitions in track & field and cross-country, attract many thousands of young people from hundreds of schools every year to compete firstly in local events within their county, reaching eventually to the national finals, hosted across the country at the end of the summer and autumn terms respectively. This is in addition to the hundreds of thousands who take part in the area and county rounds of the national championships.

Without adequate funding, all of this is at risk, both the opportunities for the masses and the first steps on the ladder for future Olympic and world champions. Hopefully, there is a company out there that sees the benefits that come from a link with a hugely successful and well-organised youth sport. Past sponsors like TSB Bank were very positive about the benefits they gained from their link with the Association in terms of long-term account-holders who are still customers years after opening their accounts when the bank hosted county and school events. As the Association moves closer to its centenary in 2025 it is essential a way is found to fund its activities properly to allow our young people to continue to have the opportunities they have had in the first hundred years.

SHAFTESBURY BARNET HARRIERS 125th ANNIVERSARY DINNER AND DANCE – Last week DAVE BEDFORD sent me a copy of the speech he made when he was President of SBH (2014 to 2017), at the Dinner and Dance celebrating the clubs 125 years since we were formed in 1890. DAVE joined Shaftesbury Harriers in 1964 aged 14.

Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers 125th Anniversary Dinner Speech June 2015

Dinner Toasts:
1. All Past Presidents, Vice Presidents and Life Members
2. All Past and Present Club Committee Members
3. All International Athletes including DOUG THOMPSON our first international in 1949.
4. All Club members who have not stood up so far.
5. All Guests

I am honoured to be the Club President in this 125th year. I was at the 75th Dinner and was the organiser of our Centenary dinner in 1990. The hard work for tonight has been done by TONY SUNDERLAND, BRYAN and JOYCE SMITH and PHIL CUNNINGHAM. They deserve a round of APPLAUSE!

If this speech needed a title it might be “Handing over the Baton”. 125 years of development and success is not down to any one generation but an ethos of service and support that like a relay baton is passed on.

1890 seems a long time ago, Queen Victoria was on the throne and Shaftesbury Harries was formed by a few lads, mainly 16 year olds from the Shaftesbury Road area of Hornsey. The Shaftesbury Tavern on Hornsey Road reminds us of our formation. In those days Shaftesbury was a XC and Road Running Club as the word “harriers” suggests and most of their runs and races took place in Highgate and Hampstead Heath. They had many headquarters over the early years, mainly rooms above pubs. (Shall we go for a training run or just stay here and get pissed!). Handicap races, paper Chases and Inter Club competitions were the norm.

The social side was made up of regular dances and social evenings best described in old club press cuttings, “November 3rd 1900. The Club holds its first race of their 11th season today- a 3 mile handicap from the Windsor Castle Public House, East Finchley at 4pm sharp. A smoker to be held in the evening and members are requested to bring their music”.

We know only a little about these early years but please raise your glasses and remember, thank and toast those who founded the club.  TOAST

During the next 60 years little happened, well apart from 2 World Wars. No that’s not right. HAROLD ASHTON joined the Club as a 17 year old in 1930 and ARTHUR KENDALL in 1931. They would go on to have a great influence in our Club and held the baton between them for the next 60 years. Under their leadership we started winning titles. These largely achieved because there was a strong focus on coaching.  Our headquarters were at Parliament Hill track (1939) also Maccabi Stadium and Headstone Lane. HAROLD started our quarterly Club magazine these days so abled managed as an email newsletter by ALAN WELLER.  in 1964 we moved here to Copthall Stadium which has been our home ever since – now more than 50 years.

We organised our own annual promotions in the 1950’s, The Shaftesbury Boys XC Races and the Shaftesbury 10 mile Road Race which often hosted the AAA Championships and saw our first National XC success with our youth team winning. This National and Area success continued our X Country teams and individuals winning numerous Area and National Championships.

The face of Track and Field athletics was changing; track and field trophy meeting, inter club meetings and Club Championships had been the way but were struggling to get interest. A League system for Senior athletes was introduced in 1969 but our Club decided not to join at that stage as we felt we were not strong enough. The following year we took the leap of faith but had to join the lowest league in the South, Southern League Division 7. Progress was rapid and by 1974 we had moved up to Southern League Division 1. 2 years later we joined the British League in Division 4. Now the baton was moving quickly! 1977 we moved up to Division 3 and in 1978 to Division 2. This year saw us win the League Cup in Cwmbran for the first time!  1979 we moved up again to Division 1. Southern League 5 to British league 1 in 10 years! We won this prestigious trophy 3 more time s 1985,1997 and 1999.

The Young Athletes League, formed in 1974 and proved successful for the Club’s younger members. Wins in 1981,83,84,85,87 and 1988 (any since) xxxxxxx

Much of this success was driven by the drive of GEOFF MORPHITIS and our Team managers and GEOFF’S enthusiasm continues today.

In 1986 we amalgamated with Barnet Copthall Ladies whose own Club originated as Hampstead Harries in 1890, the same year as us. Those delicate negotiations were handled formally by both Club Committees but I can reveal today that the real progress was made by a small working party between Shaftesbury’s BRIAN and Barnet Ladies JOYCE SMITH. Again, no minutes or pictures from these meetings exist!

We have now been in League 1 for 35 years with only being missing due to giving other Clubs a chance.  This Club is not just about the old days though, In 2012 and again in 2013 we were League 1 Champions and also 2nd in 1999 2014.

Our Women’s team won their league 1 in 1997 11nd 1999 as well as being second several times. They also won their “FA Cup”, the Plate in 1997 and 1999.

In short, we thought we were good at the time of our 100 years but look at us now. Our future prospects have never looked better.

Coptlall , now Allianz Park has been developed by Saracens, with our Club having better facilities than ever. The working relationship with Saracens is excellent and we are delighted that they offered to host this evenings celebration.  It’s easy looking back and thinking about the good old days. Most of our current Club Officers have been in their positions for almost as long as ARTHUR KENDALL and HAROLD ASHTON.  Ladies and Gentlemen, these are the Good Old Days.

On my table tonight are 3 Club stalwarts (old geezers!), GLYNN JENKINS who with HAROLD ASHTON produced our Centenary Book 25 years ago, BOB PARKER who knows the name of everyone in the room (All right Mate) and PETER WORDSMITH, OUR Club’s oldest member.

This year has already seen great successes but probably none better than at the National XC at Parliament Hill in January. As I arrived to watch, Shaftesbury’s GEORGE GROOM was coming down the final hill to the finish about to become National Under 15 Champion, his club vest taking me back many years. How fitting it felt to see this in this special year..

PETER WORDSMITH, representing the past would like to make a small presentation to GEORGE GROOM who represents Shaftesbury’s future. PETER and his sister have also made a £500 donation to Club funds to be used for supporting Young Club athletes. The award is a signed copy of the book “ZATOPEK” the EMIL ZATPOEK story. ZATOPEK won Gold in 1948 Olympic Games 10k, 3 Olympic Golds Gold’s in Helsinki in 1952 at 5k, 10k and Marathon. EMIL himself came to visit our Club back here at Copthall in 1965, I was 15! He answered our questions and then took us for an easy run around the fields. In many people’s view EMIL was the greatest distance runner ever. GEORGE please come up and in receiving this award from PETER, the baton is passed to your generation to lead our Club on to 150, 175 and even 200 years.

The following is the report of the Dinner and Dance, which was published in the 11 June 2015 SBH Weekly Newsletter.

SHAFTESBURY BARNET HARRIERS 125 YEARS ANNIVERSARY DINNER – A really enjoyable evening was had by 200 of our club members on Saturday in celebrating our 125th Anniversary.  It was great to see old friends and also see our next generation of club athletes.  Our President, DAVE BEDFORD gave a speech which did start a bit risqué as you might expect.  He talked a bit about our history and how good we all thought we were when we had our 100 year Anniversary but that we had now reached an even higher level and are clearly the best club in country!  He did make a particular reference to ALAN WELLER who keeps us all informed of the results of the club and its members through his excellent weekly newsletter but wasn’t able to be present for the dinner.  A signed copy of Emil Zatopek book was presented to GEORGE GROOM, our U15 National Cross Country Champion, from our oldest club member PETER WOODSMITH.

At the end of the evening presentations were made to the club members that have recently completed 50 years membership with the club; these were MARGARET BEECHAM, GEOFF MORPHITIS, TONY PACKHAM, JULIAN GOATER, DAVE BEDFORD and RICHARD BOBER.  Further presentations of SEAA 40 years’ long service awards for club members that have assisted with the club/SEAA duties (officials, club committees, helpers etc but including time just as athletes).  Recipients were: BRYAN SMITH, JOYCE SMITH, GERRY ELMORE, ROGER SIMONS, DAVE BEDFORD, GEOFF MORPHITIS and TONY SUNDERLAND, with the biggest cheer of the evening, to TONY SMITH. There were many photographs taken, and we will advise you all on how they will be circulated. A big thank you to all those that organised the meeting
I was very disappointed to miss the Dinner, but my Niece decided to get married on Saturday in Taunton, I did try to bribe them to move the date but to no avail – ALAN.

TWO ITEMS PUBLISHED IN THE SHAFTESBURY HARRIERS QUARTERLEY NEWSLETTER – I found two articles that HAROLD ASHTON published, refering to DAVE BEDFORD.

Shaftesbury Harriers Quarterly Magazine February 1978 – For those who have not heard DAVE BEDFORD has been caught at last and marries SUE HOLSTROM on Easter Sunday – March 25th.
Now the bad news DAVE is not having a stag night.
The good news is that he is having a stag week. Starting on Monday March 20th with a Pub crawl up the Finchley High Road meet in the Golden Eagle at Henleys corner at 5.30pm. Wednesday sees an attempt at the Edgware Road pub crawl, meet in the King and Queen, Edgware Road (Marble Arch end) at 11.30am.
DAVE hopes to see all Shaftesbury Harriers over 18 at these two important fixtures for which serious training should begin immediately.

Shaftesbury Harriers Quarterly Magazine Winter 1985/86 Lightning Response – from DAVE BEDFORD to an enquiry about the welfare of his boy TOM, aged approximately two: “He’s nearly as big as JOHN BROE – and twice as clever!”

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

UK MEN’S MERIT RANKINGS 2021 – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
PETER MATTHEWS delivers the definitive summary of top performances by British women this year. Although the pandemic has continued to affect athletics events, a considerable degree of normality has gradually returned although with some changes of emphasis. So annual merit rankings of British athletes have this year returned to close to full coverage despite a reduction of competition. Once again indoor performances are fully considered, although most of the 2020/21 indoor season was wiped out.

It should be noted that the use of many facilities has not been allowed for much of the year and this has particularly affected events such as high jump and pole vault, while hammer and discus cages have too often been neglected leading to cancellation of events. And while some specific events such as organised by the BMC for middle distances and new sprints meetings have flourished, the overall domestic calendar has been allowed to decline and the senior league structure severely weakened.
On the first line below is shown the athlete’s name, then their date of birth followed, in brackets, by the number of years ranked (including 2021) and their rankings in 2019 and 2020, and finally, their best mark prior to 2021. The following lines include their best performances of the year (generally six), followed by significant indoor marks indicated by ‘i’. Then follow placings at major meetings, providing a summary of the athlete’s year at the event.
Comparisons to the past ignore 2020.

Our sprinters started well below par, with, for instance, a weak team at the World Relays, but, with many sprint meetings at Lea Valley, Newham, Barking etc., the overall picture improved during the year and 50th best of 10.47 is a new record. Hughes regained his 2018-19 top ranking, but one just has to wonder what, but for his false start (also at UKs), he might have achieved at the Olympics.

Pearce maintained his rapid improvement and although he could quite get the OG standard, beat them both at Gateshead and the UKs so ranks first.

BIRMINGHAM 2022 UPDATE ON THE QUEEN’S BATON RELAY – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Having visited 22 countries and nations in just 79 days, the Queen’s Baton Relay has now completed over a quarter of its journey, most recently finishing its tour of the 19 Commonwealth countries in Africa.
While hosting the Baton, each Commonwealth Games Association organises activities to engage young people in sport, showcase their local heroes, and highlight a project that addresses at least one of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
For example, while in Kenya, the Baton was hiked up the Ngong Hills where, at the peak, the Batonbearers took part in a tree planting activity and were joined by children from local performance group, Huruma Town Kids.
Rwanda demonstrated how they take on Sustainable Development Goals by hosting a visit at the new Nyandungu Urban Wetland Ecotourism Park which aims to increase and conserve local biodiversity and restore on-land and aquatic habitats.
Whilst in Zambia, the Baton visited Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Wonders of The Natural World and the largest waterfall in the world. Brave Batonbearers swam through the Devil’s Pool, a natural rock pool along the edge of the falls. Climate justice activist, Enock Mwewa represented Zambia as one of the Batonbearers.
During the visit to Uganda, the Baton visited the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre, which runs conservation projects, as well as the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, whose mission is to protect chimpanzees and their ecosystems.
Supporting the Sustainable Development Goals, Mauritius showcased their low emission transport options around the island, including an electric bus, the public metro and even a sailboat to ferry the Baton to Mahebourg Waterfront. At the Waterfront, Noemi Alphonse, the first Paralympian finalist in Mauritius, carried the Baton.
Celebrating youth engagement in sport, the Queen’s Baton visited Government Primary School Bastos in Cameroon. Whilst in Lesotho and Eswatini, the Baton was taken to OlympAfrica Centres where sport activities were hosted for children to get involved in.
In Botswana, the Baton visited several schools to engage young people in the Relay. At Tshwaragano Junior Secondary School, 72 students drew the 72 flags of the Commonwealth nations and territories. Local hero and Batonbearer, OGANNE MANENGENE represented her community. OGANNE set up a tuck shop using a government grant, she then expanded it to a grocery store, and now she uses its proceeds to build environmentally friendly housing for her community.
Each nation also took the Baton to visit their communities’ iconic locations or to witness to witness unique performances, showcasing their culture or history.
In Tanzania, the Baton was taken to the Askari Monument, which memorialises African soldiers, who fought in the British Campaign against Germany in World War I, where Batonbearers and attendees paid their respects to the lives lost.
The Baton visited St Michael and All Angels Church in Malawi, which was built by locals who had no previous formal training. The church tells the story of a community coming together to create something remarkable for future generations. MARY WAYA, who previously competed at three Commonwealth Games in the Malawi Netball Team and then founded the MARY WAYA Foundation which encourages girls in Africa to take up sport, represented her country as a Batonbearer.
The Queen’s Baton Relay reached the remote volcanic island of St Helena for the first time in eight years where JOSH HERNE, 16-year-old Batonbearer, carried the Baton up Diana’s Peak, the island’s highest point and Jacob’s Ladder, which is 700 steps high.
The Baton was welcomed in Mozambique by a Chopi Timbila performance, during which musicians use different sized drums to produce a variety of sounds, while the main orchestra is made up of Timbilas, which are similar to xylophones, but are made from a rare wood only found in Inhambane.
While touring South Africa, the Baton was taken to the Big Hole (The Kimberly Mine), an open-pit and underground mine, which was once thought to be the deepest hole excavated by hand. When the mine was active, almost three tons of diamonds was recovered from it- which is the same weight as a baby blue whale!
In Namibia, the Baton was taken on an intense journey, from quad bikes to camel rides, to horseback, and even skydiving, Batonbearers travelled in extreme ways.
The Baton visited many incredible islands and beaches in the Seychelles, the first night was spent at one of the beaches with locals performing the Moutya dance around a bonfire.
Speaking on the opportunity to be involved in the Queen’s Baton Relay, Malawian Batonbearer MARY WAYA said: “The Commonwealth Games means a lot to me and being a Batonbearer for the Queen’s Baton Relay has been a real honour. The young girls I train hope to one day represent our country and take on the Baton for the Commonwealth Games.”
LISA HAMPTON, Head of The Queen’s Baton Relay, said: “The Queen’s Baton has already completed over a quarter of its journey and has shone a spotlight on communities in the African Commonwealth countries and territories and highlighted all the hard work each Commonwealth Games Association puts into organising these incredible events and activities while hosting the Baton.”
“Learning about all of the ongoing environmental initiatives, such as the Nyandungu Urban Wetland Ecotourism Park, is amazing and it is a fantastic representation of how the Commonwealth can come together in solidarity and inspire future generations to take on the same responsibility.”
“I can’t wait to see the rest of the journey unfold and see how the remaining Commonwealth Games Associations celebrate the Queen’s Baton Relay.”
The Queen’s Baton Relay will now continue its journey around the Commonwealth, starting its South Asian journey in Pakistan, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, then Bangladesh.

THE CHANGING STATE OF ATHLETICS TRACKS IN THE UK – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Posted by PETA BEE on 4 January 2022.
Should facilities be created with performance or participation in mind? And are traditional 400m ovals always vital? When is a track not a track? It’s a question to which there was once only one answer. As a minimum you might assume a standard track should measure 400m, have lanes and be oval in shape.

However, convention is being challenged by England Athletics’ Facilities Strategy and the loftily-labelled Hierarchy of Facilities set out by UK Athletics which lauds the benefits of the running tracks and trails of irregular shapes and sizes which are cropping up around the country. Within a one-mile radius of my home in Berkshire, three one or two-lane synthetic running trails have been installed in the playgrounds of local primary schools, while two miles away there are plans to replace an existing 400m cinder track with a proposed 300m synthetic surface. Further afield, a well-lit, synthetic two-lane 1km jogging loop with a six-lane straight, installed in a large field has recently been completed at Millom in Cumbria, while there are proposals for more “compact” athletics provision, defined by EA as the “new generation of affordable and sustainable satellite athletics facilities”, to be squeezed into small spaces. Clearly, the quest to grow mass participation is a driving force behind the new wave of facilities. In its Athletics Unified strategy published just over a year ago, UK Athletics states that there are currently 225,000 registered athletes and 200,000 “group runners” participating in governing body-organised schemes such as RunTogether, JogScotland, RunWales and Run NI. On top of these are the seven million social runners who participate in the sport twice a month, a cohort which almost certainly provides the biggest untapped market and the most likely route for UKA to meet its goal of amassing nine million regular participants in athletics or running by 2032. Bringing more people into the sport, at whatever level, is important for its survival as much as its appeal, but are these new tracks and trails being installed at the expense of competitive facilities?

ED HUNT, EA’s facilities and planning manager, says there are around 360 conventional outdoor athletics tracks in the UK, 73 per cent of which are synthetic and provide all-weather, year-round options. He adds that UKA’s strategic position is to concentrate on preserving the existing stock of 400m tracks rather than seeking to build new ones. “Our standard approach is that we’ve got enough 400m tracks across the UK to service demand,” says HUNT, adding that the less conventional facilities exist to “plug the gaps” in participation needs. Certainly, they serve a purpose. What they don’t solve is another crisis facing the sport. As new jogging trails spring up, so more 400m athletics tracks continue to fall into disrepair. From the demise of Crystal Palace to situations faced at the likes of Parliament Hill track – home to the Night of the 10,000m PBs which is due to return in May – where there is a “real risk” of closure over insurance concerns without funding for repairs, to Tooting Bec, where a campaign spear-headed by ex-long jumper Jade Johnson has helped save the track, the situation facing many performance facilities is bleak. “It costs up to one million pounds to build a new 400m track and they are not cheap to develop or maintain, with most needing some level of resurfacing every seven years or so,” says Hunt. “As an example, the Millom project cost around £200,000 because the price per square metre is much more favourable as it’s on a smaller scale.” But is this a false economy of sorts? If running trails slowly replace tracks, where will athletes train and compete? Many of the new trails and tracks, Millom included, state that “no spikes” should be worn on the surface.  HUNT argues that a 150m-300m track could be used for competition, although concedes it would be for more “innovative” meetings and says “you probably won’t get a competitive athlete racing on them”.

In the longer term, will a jogging facility provide the environment and impetus for social runners to progress into competitive club athletics? Hunt’s view is that they will provide a valuable crossover, particularly for younger athletes. “It’s quite a scary thing when you are a very young athlete looking at a huge 400m track,” he says. “Smaller tracks are much more conducive to young athletes’ development.” It doesn’t have to be a slippery slope, however. With careful planning, some of the new ventures might eventually morph into a track which meets performance as well as mass participation needs. An example is the Stefen Hill Sports Ground in Daventry where, after eight years of having half a track – only a J-shaped 200m synthetic surface – work funded by Daventry District Council was recently completed so that the remaining 200m of old cinder surface was upgraded to a full synthetic 400m oval. This looks like being the exception rather than the rule, however, and the balance appears to have tipped. “We’re not just about performance,” says HUNT. “We’ve got enough tracks to service the competitive end of the sport and we are about much more than that.”
