RESULTS
Just to clarify, that the results I publish can be different to those that are shown on the Power of 10. The differences relate to seasons and personal best performances. For example in the recent EYAL results, an athlete in the 200m ran (24.1), and on his profile his season’s best was shown as (23.88) indoors. As the 200m indoors and outdoors are totally different type of events, I had shown the (24.1) as a season’s best.
The Power of 10 publishes separate UK rankings for indoor and outdoor performances.

CONGRATULATIONS  To CHARLIE DOBSON, ZHARNEL HUGHES and LINA NIELSEN who are included in the 65 athletes who were awarded Lottery funding on the UK Athletics Olympic World Class Programme for the next 12 months ahead of the World Championships in Tokyo.

LIFE’S A LOTTERY FOR THE CLASS OF 2024-2025  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Here is the list of athletes who UK Athletics are backing to battle for podium places in future. KEELY HODGKINSON, KATARINA JOHNSTON-THOMPSON and MATT HUDSON-SMITH are among 65 athletes awarded Lottery funding on the UK Athletics Olympic World Class Programme for the next 12 months ahead of the World Championships in Tokyo. This follows a Paris Olympics where the British team won 10 medals – their best tally since 1984. The programme is split into four different levels of support – Podium, Podium Potential, Relay and Confirmation – with the goal of helping athletes who the governing body feels can win medals at the 2028 LA Olympics or in 2032.

Among the notable names not on the lists for this coming year are EILISH MCCOLGAN, SCOTT LINCOLN, LIZZIE BIRD, CALLUM WILKINSON, LAWRENCE OKOYE, NICK PERCY and ELLIOT GILES. Steeplechaser BIRD is now pursuing a career in law in the aftermath of making the European podium in Rome and breaking the British record at the Olympics, whereas there have also been post-Olympic retirements such as HOLLY BRADSHAW, ANDY POZZI, JESSIE KNIGHT and JODIE WILLIAMS. There are also some coaching changes at the end of this season. LOUIE HINCHLIFFE, for example, has moved away from CARL LEWIS in Houston to be coached by RICHARD KILTY, whereas MORGAN LAKE is no longer coached by ROBBIE GRABARZ.

“Athletics has had two consecutive years of bringing back 10 medals from a global stage and this investment is key to that,” said Olympic head coach PAULA DUNN. “I believe we have demonstrated as a sport we are directing this investment into the right areas and look forward to receiving confirmation of our LA investment later this year. “For those athletes who have transitioned off the programme or not made the programme today, it is not to say they won’t have success in future, just that the parameters for WCP selection are very specific and they do not qualify right at this moment. Everyone who wears the GB & NI vest should be proud of their achievement, we are, and we will continue to see where we can add value, support and guidance to those individuals who do not meet the WCP criteria at this time.”

60 YEARS ON: CELEBRATING TOKYO 1964 OLYMPIC GAMES  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. The following photographs were taken by MARK SHEARMAN.

This month marks 60 years since the 1964 edition of the Olympic Games took place in the Japanese capital. Sixty years ago this month, the world witnessed the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, a landmark event that introduced Asia to the global stage of the Olympic Games. Not only was it the first time the Games were hosted in Asia, but it also marked a technological milestone as the first Olympics to be broadcast live via satellite. While Team GB’s performance in 2012 was celebrated as the nation’s best-ever Olympic outing, it’s interesting to compare it to the 1964 haul. Back then, Great Britain brought home four gold medals, seven silvers, one bronze and five fourth-place finishes.

Two of the gold medals from Tokyo came with record-breaking performances. MARY RAND, one of Britain’s standout athletes at the time, took home gold in the long jump. On a rain-soaked runway, she began with a UK record jump of (6.59m) and by the fifth round she shattered the world record, leaping an impressive (6.76m). Just three days later, on October 17, 1964, RAND added to her medal tally with a silver in the women’s pentathlon. She completed her Olympic medal set by winning bronze in the 4x100m relay alongside team-mates JANET SIMPSON, DAPHNE ARDEN and DOROTHY HYMAN.

The second world record for the British team in Tokyo came from ANN PACKER in the 800m. Despite being a relative novice at the distance, she won a dramatic race in a world record of (2:01.10). With this victory, PACKER became the first British woman to win an Olympic title on the track.

The other two golds for Great Britain in 1964 were achieved by KEN MATTHEWS in the 20km race walk and LYNN DAVIES in the men’s long jump. DAVIES delivered the best performance of his career with a jump of (8.07m), clinching the top spot on the podium.

In total, 11 world records were set during the Tokyo Olympics. Among the most notable was Ethiopia’s ABEBE BILILA, who clocked a marathon time of (2:12:20), and USA’s BOB HAYES, who ran a blistering (10.00) seconds in the 100m final. The Games also saw other unforgettable performances, such as New Zealand’s PETER SNELL securing an extraordinary 800m and 1500m double. In the 10,000m, America’s BILLY MILLS pulled off a sensational win, finishing nearly 50 seconds faster than his personal best to take gold and the dramatic men’s discus final stood out, with USA’s AL OERTER claiming victory in a thrilling contest.

Fast forward to 2021 and Tokyo once again made history by hosting the postponed Olympics during the global pandemic. Team GB walked away from those games with a smaller medal haul (two silvers and three bronze) but they were considered vastly different from the 1964 edition.

NOAH LYLES AND GABBY THOMAS STAR IN SECOND SEASON OF ‘SPRINT’  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

The US duo have prominent roles once again in the series, while the Netflix cameras also focus on the likes of JULIEN ALFRED and LETSITE TEBOGO. The Paris Olympics might’ve ended but fans will soon get a behind the scenes look at the Games. SPRINT, the track and field documentary series that premiered on July 2, is back again for its second instalment and it will be released on November 13. The trailer for the series shows a number of athletes preparing for the Olympics and how they battled it out for a gold medal in the French capital. The second series of SPRINT focuses on: FRED KERLEY, GABBY THOMAS, KISHANE THOMPSON, JULIEN ALFRED, LETSITE TEBOGO, MELISSA JACKSON, , MARCELL JACOBS, KENNY BEDNAREK, SHERICKA JACKSON and OBLIQUE SEVILLE. Quite a few of them feature in the trailer and LYLES and THOMAS are just two of those athletes.

LYLES won the Olympic 100m gold medal in scintillating fashion at the Stade de France, clocking (9.79) to beat THOMPSON by just five-thousandths of a second. In the 200m it was a slightly different story, with the US athlete – who later revealed he had Covid – finishing second behind TEBOGO. The Motswana also features heavily in the series, who won his country’s first ever gold medal at the Olympics with that victory over half a lap. TEBOGO clocked an incredible (19.46), which put him fifth on the 200m all-time list. Safe to say, THOMAS’ equally impressive win in the 200m will feature in the second season of SPRINT. The American ran (21.83) to stand on the top of the podium and left the Games with an amazing three gold medals, after helping the US women’s 4x100m and 4x400m teams to glory.

ALFRED, who claimed silver behind Thomas in the 200m, won Olympic 100m gold and secured Saint Lucia’s first ever medal in any sport in the history of the Games. Her national record of (10.72) in the pouring rain at the Stade de France sparked wild celebrations back on the island and videos of thousands of people watching her 100m glory went viral around the world. Netflix will now be hoping the global success stories of athletes from the Olympics can help get the sport into new markets and inspire the next generation.
