RESULT
VICTORIA PARK SPORTS MEDICINE METROPOLITAN LEAGUE – The third fixture of five took place at Hillingdon on 2 December.
On a muddy course at Hillingdon, we managed to maintain the results from Wormwood Scrubs, with another good turnout from all age-groups.

There were team wins from the Under 11 Boys and Under 15 Boys/17 Men. The Under 13 Girls and Under 15 Girls/17 Women finished in 2nd place, the Under 11 Girls finished 3rd and Under 13 Boys finished 8th. The Senior Men finished in 12th place, and Senior Women finished in 11th place.

These are our individual top 10 finishers – Under 11 Boys DENNYS PASCAL repeated his Wormwood Scrubs win HARRISON HENDERSON 7th – Under 11 Girls GRACE ROONEY 2nd, SIENNA DARCY 7th – Under 13 Girls AIMEE PORTER 4th – Under 15 Boys ARTHUR PHILLIPS 2nd, EUAN PHILLIPS 9th – Under 15 Girls POSIE SHAW 3rd – Under 17 Men RAFI GAYER 2nd, ADAM O’GORMAN 3rd, JORDAN PEARLMAN 7th, JACOB CLEMENT 8th, TOMMY NARVAEZ-WHITE 9th – Under 17 Women MYA MAIRS-INGRAM 4th, LARISSA WILSON 7th – Senior Men THOMAS BUTLER 5th.

The following is a summary of our team positions after 3 fixtures – Under 11 Boys are leading Victoria Park & Tower Hamlets by 75 points, not being too optimistic but with 2 fixtures left, we are looking good – Under 11 Girls we lost ground to our rivals, with 2 fixtures left, we have 1 point lead over Woodford Green & Essex Ladies, therefore at the next fixture at Welwyn we need a bigger turnout – Under 13 Boys we finished 8th, and are now 5th overall, at Welwyn we need a bigger turnout which will give us a chance of catching the 3rd place team London Heathside who have a 29 point lead – Under 13 Girls we lost ground to our rivals by finishing 8th, with 2 fixtures left, we are in 2nd place, we cannot catch St Mary’s Richmond, but Harrow who are in 3rd place are only 13 points behind us – Under 15 Boys/Under 17 Men are leading Woodford Green & Essex Ladies by 95 points, and again not being too optimistic but with 2 fixtures left, we are looking good – Under 15 Girls/Under 17 Women are in 3rd place, 3 points behind Woodford Green & Essex Ladies, but Herts Phoenix are just 4 points behind us, but with 2 fixtures left, it is going to be a fight to the finish – Senior Men, to be honest, short of a miracle we are in 12th place, to avoid relegation we need to make up 678 points on Thames Valley Harriers, to achieve this the team probably need to finish in 3rd/4th place at the final 2 fixtures – Senior Women, are in the same position as the Men, in 12th place. we are 93 points behind 10th place team Hillingdon, to give us a chance of avoiding relegation we need probably need at least 7-8 runners at the final 2 fixtures – Veteran Men, it has been an outstanding season, the team finished 2nd on Saturday, and also are 2nd place overall after 3 fixtures, with 2 fixtures left we are 129 points ahead of 3rd place Highgate Harriers, therefore we need a final push at Welwyn and Trent Park and promotion will be achieved.

COMMONWEALTH GAMES FUTURE IN DOUBT AFTER GOLD COAST WITHDRAWS 2026 BID  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Gold Coast hosted the Games in 2018 but becomes second Australian city to pull out of 2026 edition. The future of the Commonwealth Games is in doubt after Gold Coast scrapped its bid for the next instalment of the event.

Gold Coast, which held the Games back in 2018, stepped in after the state of Victoria decided that they couldn’t host due to costs increasing from £1.4 billion to £3.7 billion. To keep the 2026 edition in Australia, Gold Coast Mayor TOM TATE insisted they could do it again but only if the federal government helped cover the expenses. However, both federal and state governments have now ruled out supporting the event. “We did our best and that’s all people can expect,” Tate said in a statement on December 3. “In simple terms, it seems our Games’ vision doesn’t align with the vision of the state or federal governments.” The idea was to host a ‘streamlined’ Games for around £367m, which could be shared with Perth, a six-hour flight away. TATE’S proposal did not receive the required support though. “Our dual proposal with Perth would have saved Australia’s tarnished reputation, delivered billions into the national economy and given athletes, and para-athletes, a clear pathway towards other international competitions including the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and Paralympics and then on to the 2032 Games in Queensland,” he added.

It means the Commonwealth Games now doesn’t have a host for either 2026 or 2030. Just a month after Victoria stepped back from hosting the 2026 edition back in July, the Canadian province of Alberta withdrew its 2030 bid, also citing rising costs. Organisers now suggest the next Games may have to be moved to 2027 as they look at options to keep the event alive. Over 5000 athletes from 72 nations competed at Birmingham 2022, almost all of which are former territories of the British Empire.

INTERNATIONAL ATHLETICS COULD BE BACK AT CRYSTAL PALACE IN FIVE YEARS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph of DAVE BEDFORD’S World Record in 1973 taken by MARK SHEARMAN.

Smaller-scale meets may take place beforehand but the current projection might see global events in 2028. Evolution, not revolution.

The plan to bring the glory days back to Crystal Palace is already underway and emphasis is on building what is already in place, not starting from scratch. Next to the main sports centre lies the once state-of-the-art 16,500 capacity stadium that hosted world-class events for decades and, if everything goes to plan, there is now a real prospect of the best in the business returning to Crystal Palace once again. Look at the stadium in its current state and that might be hard to believe. When AW visited in the summer, bird excrement covered both the indoor track and seats outside, the synthetic track was so worn away in places you could see the concrete and the floodlights had been taken away for safety reasons. Rightfully, those who have an affinity with the venue aren’t always overly optimistic after a decade of broken promises and plans going back to the drawing board. BEN WOODSwho AW exclusively spoke to at Crystal Palace back in July, is the man aiming to break that cycle.

Part of the team that helped deliver the 2022 Commonwealth Games, he was chosen by SADIQ KHAN to be Project Director at the Greater London Authority (GLA) for the redevelopment of Crystal Palace, a role that he has now been in since January 2023. Since his induction, short-term work on the track has already started. Last week (November 27), new temporary floodlights were installed, while the track has already been cleaned and refurbished. “We’ve done the vast majority of the track repairs now,” WOODS says. “There are a few bits of the inside lane that still needs doing. The final phase of that will be done in the spring and hopefully in March. “At that time we’ll get all the equipment out and tested. That’s when we’ll get the UKA certification which will allow for certain lower level competitions. We’ve worked with UKA to get the right lux levels of lighting for competitions. I’d say by next summer that the track, lighting and equipment are all in place.”

Woods, who grew up in Upper Norwood and watched the likes of STEVE CRAM and MICHAEL JOHNSON at the Grand Prix meets in the 1980s and 90s, states he understands the significance of athletics at Crystal Palace. “We’ve got a magnificent stage,” Woods adds. “Where else do you get that bowl in a listed park? The name Crystal Palace is also world famous. The stadium is beautifully designed and the acoustics are amazing. “I was at the Diamond League [at the Olympic Stadium] but at the end of the day it’s a one-off event. What about the rest of the year? That’s where I see Crystal Palace really fitting into that infrastructure. “A key home for London athletics and the wider region. We’re really excited about the potential for the stadium as a 365-day a year home for the sport.”

The obvious question then is, down the line can world-class athletics return to a venue which hosted the Diamond League from 1999 to 2012? “Short-term it’s [about] smaller-scale meets but for international style events we’re talking five years in the future,” says WOODS. If that timescale is fulfilled then the elite of track and field could compete at Crystal Palace in the same year as the LA 2028 Olympic and Paralympics. However, WOODS is the first to emphasise that this is a long process and there is a way to go yet. After all, when Birmingham won the bid for the Commonwealth Games in 2017, it was delivered in 2022. That was a four-and-a- half to five-year project and WOODS is working on a similar timeframe at Crystal Palace. The project is split into two phases. While there are early works centred around the track, equipment and temporary floodlights; analysis and business plans are currently being drawn together for both the centre and the stadium. Right now, the focus is on talking to stakeholders, listening to residents and understanding the needs and concerns of people in the community. If planning application for the centre – which houses Olympic-sized swimming and diving pools that have been closed since March 2020 – is approved by Bromley Council next year, construction is scheduled to start on the main building from 2025 until the middle of 2026.

That means that diggers would be at the stadium, which is phase two, from just before 2027 onwards and with a projected completion in 2028. In this stage of the process, the idea is to install a new 400m track that could potentially be fit for both international competition and training. In addition, an accredited 200m track is also in the current plans, inspired by World Athletics’ ‘short-track’ announcement back in May, where athletes would be able to gain ranking points and set records on an outdoor 200m track. The newly built track at Crystal Palace would be based between the stadium and centre. It could also be used as a warm-up area for athletes before a competition. “I think athletics generally is looking at what are the event profiles moving forward and how can we make it more interesting for a youth market?” WOODS states. “We want to be part of those conversations and that’s why we’re also looking at the 200m ‘short-track’ from World Athletics. “The sprinting culture we have here is almost unique and it’s a hub. One of the real drivers is upgrading the indoor straight and we’re even seeing that as a potential event venue.” That’s not to say that events won’t happen in the short to medium term.

Currently, for safety reasons, the West Stand is closed and you can only fit 500 out of the capacity 4000-seater Jubilee Stand. “We’re looking at those structural checks at the minute of bringing the seating bowl up to standards,” WOODS adds. “We’re working on certification. The West Stand is completely closed while we have structural checks. The Jubilee Stand can still be used for events of 500 capacity. We’re looking at getting the whole of the Jubilee Stand certified. That allows for bigger events. We need to work on the analysis of the Jubilee Stand but I’d like to think that by next summer we are capable of hosting smaller events. “We’ve got to look at things like crowd loading and crash barriers for example as well as ease of access and ancillary areas like toilets. It’s a sound building [Jubilee Stand] and we’ve just got to polish it and make sure it works to get that license. Over the course of next year I’d like to think we can increase it from just 500 but I can’t promise it would be full capacity. That’s what we’re heading towards though. “Can we start to run school events down there with the capacity of 500-1000? Then work of regional championships, then national championships. We want this stadium, if it’s going to be the athletics home for London, to be that for every day of the year. This won’t live and die off a one-off event.”

There is a budget that has been signed off by City Hall but those associated with the project understand the significance of sponsorship, especially with the long-term redevelopment of the stadium. Given the cultural and historical significance of athletics at Crystal Palace, the offer is a strong one. “We’ve got this stage and want to bring it back to life,” WOODS says. “We’ve got some capital funding but it’s the ‘what if question’. If it grows and we get that viable business plan then there’s the potential of not ‘what is’ but to actually expand slightly. It’s really dependant on others coming on that journey and so far the mood music has been very positive. “We have a 15-16,000 capacity stadium as we speak but that could be so much more. Whether that’s VIP, hospitality, increased capacity or modern standards of HD lighting? That’s the supercharged point. We’re open for business. “We have the stage and it’s 85% there. Can someone come in and help us with that final 15%? We want a stadium not just fit for the 21st but the 22nd century.”

BRITISH ATHLETICS CROSS CHALLENGE INCLUDING EUROPEAN TRIALS – Took place at Sefton Park, Liverpool on 25 November.
Congratulations to HENRY DOVER on an outstanding win, following the race HENRY spoke to Athletics Weekly.

HENRY DOVER had time to enjoy the moment, flapping his arms like a bird as he strolled across the line to secure the most significant win of his career thus far. Victory in the men’s under-20 race brings with it his first ever British international vest – and the Shaftesbury Barnet athlete could barely contain his emotion as the achievement sank in.
After establishing a sizeable lead before then being reeled in, DOVER fought back to see off Cardiff winner SAM HODGSON, with LOUIS SMALL coming home in third. “That’s what hard work brings you,” grinned an elated DOVER.

DIAMOND LEAGUE IN NEED OF POLISH  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

The Diamond League has sparkled this year, but there needs to be more continuity to take full advantage of this impressive product, writes KATHARINE MERRY. The 2023 Diamond League Final has, with good reason, gone down as the best standalone two-day meeting ever in terms of quality. It was a fitting culmination to five months of competition across four continents and 13 events. I was doing the in-stadium announcing at Hayward Field and I knew we were in for a good weekend when the first event, the men’s 400m hurdles, saw RAI BENJAMIN break the Diamond League record and set a world lead of 46.39, beating KARSTEN WARHOLM into the bargain. Before the event, I don’t think I’d have been alone in wondering if standards might slip a little, given that this final was coming at the end of a very long World Championships season, but the athletes were absolutely amazing. Again. The world records of GUDAF TSEGAY in the women’s 5000m and MONDO DUPLANTIS in the men’s pole vault were, of course, outstanding, but the fact there were also five Diamond League records, one world under-20 record, nine area records, 14 meeting records and 14 world-leading marks tells its own story.

It was wonderful to see that so few athletes wanted to take their foot off the pedal and there definitely wasn’t a “last day of school” feel to the performances. The majority of competitors seemed to want to wring every last drop out of the season. A few athletes had points to prove and, for someone like the 200m Olympic champion ANDRE DE GRASSE, running his fastest time of the year (19.76) and landing such a high profile win right at the death will make a big difference to his winter. He has not had the season he would have wanted but he now has confirmation again that he can run fast times and can beat quality opposition. It will have meant a lot to him psychologically. I don’t think we can underestimate how important it was for some athletes to perform at that point in the season either, especially with the Olympics coming next year. There have been some extraordinary moments over the course of this Diamond League season. There has been no shortage of stories across the events and it will be interesting now to see if there are any tweaks made to the format for next year. There were rumblings from the distance runners when the 10,000m was dropped but, then, the 5000m has seen two world records on the women’s side and been one of the most compelling events to watch. The hammer is not part of the schedule, either, and I had a great conversation in Eugene with my fellow Birchfield athlete BOB WEIR and his daughter JILLIAN, who won world bronze in the event last year, about this. There is obviously a lot of unhappiness because certain events are not on the circuit, have been totally ousted and are not able to get any air time, competition or money. I wonder if, going forward, there will be plans to schedule them in?

One of the big features of the season has been the emergence of so many new names and one thing that heartens me is that there is still significance attached to an athlete being able to make it into a Diamond League meeting. I do think that it’s one of the standards that a lot of athletes, younger athletes in particular, aspire to. The fact that they are making these start lines is hugely encouraging, too. That certainly won’t do any harm in trying to attract the younger audience which we keep being told is the key to the sport’s longevity. Another thing which would help, in my opinion, would be to ensure some continuity across the whole series of meetings. This is one area where I think some work really needs to be done. I would love to see the Diamond Leagues all with the same format, with every meeting happening on the same day of the week and at the same time to get regularity for fans to know when the action is happening. It would be wonderful to know that Friday night is athletics night, for example, and that it’s obvious when – every two or three weeks – you can watch the best.

I spoke about this with a few people out in Eugene and they all said the same thing. Everybody needs to know that it’s on at a certain time, on a certain day. Every time. What you really want is a whole brand continuity across all of the meetings – I’ve seen it done and work well in netball, another sport in which I’m heavily involved – but unfortunately we are probably not going to get this with athletics because the meetings are still in the hands of individual countries and spread across the world in different time zones! It’s still the case that you have these individual events contributing towards the schedule – and that can certainly be seen as one of the major problems. From the fans’ point of view, we also have to be honest and admit that it’s still too hard for people to find and watch. We have to make it more accessible. I know all these things are not that easy to do. But you have to try and, to be fair, I believe the sport is very much looking at how it might be able to do that. I have heard a few athletes who bemoan how difficult it can be to get a lane in a Diamond League and that it is becoming more and more exclusive. I don’t mind that, though.

You want the best athletes in the world at these events and I think a lot of Diamond Leagues do cater for the development of some events, albeit outside of the Diamond League programmes. The popularity of the Continental Tour appears to be growing, and providing more opportunity for competition, but we just have to make sure that’s up to scratch as well. This past summer has provided further evidence of how just how good a product we have on our hands at the top level of athletics. Now we’ve got to get better at showing it off.

LONDON YOUTH GAMES – Due to take place at Parliament Hill Fields on 18 November, and was cancelled. There were many comments on Facebook, all were not very complimentary.
This is what JEREMY SOTHCOTT had to say. A quite ridiculous decision to cancel and no real reason given other than a bit of rain which is unacceptable. Cross country is predominately run in wind, rain and mud and athletes/parents expect it. So disappointing for all the young athletes, team managers, parents and coaches. I would suggest you change the organiser and recruit someone with common sense!

AN IN-DEPTH LOOK INTO THE 4x400M RELAY  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

A deep analysis of an athletics event that is full of drama, dedication and dependability. Olympic, world and European medallist now UK Athletics coach MARTYN ROONEY talks STUART WEIR through the recipe for success in an event which requires a very different set of skills.

Selecting the team  Relay selection comes down to a few criteria and we must work within the confines of the selection policy. Current form is obvious but choosing the best relay runners is key. Athletes with good relay technical skills and previous relay experience will come into play. For example, if there are two athletes with similar season’s bests over the individual 400m but one can run on multiple legs of the 4x400m and has run a really strong relay leg in the last couple of seasons, then they would probably be more likely to be nominated for selection. You’ll find that most of the athletes are very similar and it can be difficult to select one over another. Different events have requirements that are needed to compete at a World Championships or Olympics and the relay is an event requiring professionalism and the ability to be a “team player”. Individual sports require athletes to be selfish and driven, but in a team you need to accommodate each other, have good  Communication skills and be able to support and improve your team-mates towards a common goal. I’m also aware that the relay members often need to be around athletes competing individually, so those relay team members need to bring the right energy to a camp. Poor attitude and behaviour simply can’t be tolerated at a senior championship when someone’s livelihood is on the line.

Each leg is different  Each leg provides a different challenge and relies on athletes with different strengths. For the first leg you need to be the most consistent runner and ideally within the top three from the first exchange – think low 45s (for men) and mid to high 50s (for women) – to make sure the team is competitive. The second leg is a busy one; technical baton skills, body awareness, competitive 200m speed and 800m awareness is hard to combine but necessary to compete at the top end. A good second leg can make all the difference in a race – too much traffic and you’re constantly chasing world-class runners. The third leg is the thinking athlete’s leg! You need to be aware of all that is happening throughout the race, who’s ahead and behind, where your outgoing runner needs to be to be competitive… all whilst managing your own effort and making sure you’ve got something left down the home straight. The anchor leg is seen as the run that everything hinges on but, in reality, it is a culmination of the first three legs as you can’t win it on your own! With the depth of 400m running globally, there are not many teams out there who can win a race on one leg.

FEMKE BOL is, of course, a standout athlete, but she still needs a 48 high split from LIEKE KLAVER to keep the team somewhere in the race. The last leg runner needs to be comfortable racing the best athletes, and a “healthy” ego is a good thing, but too much ego and they can overdo it and finish poorly. The last leg offers its own pressures. The race is tough, but now you are fighting other athletes for the medal. It’s a real battle but the best last leg runners can find that extra one per cent down the home straight.

Is it best to be leading going into the final leg?  It’s individual. Personally, I preferred to sit and kick. I used to find it relaxing. It suited me coming from a more middle/long distance background, and someone like KEVIN BORLOE is an expert – we both liked to sit and kick. But it depends on the individual. Every athlete has their own preference. Some athletes can’t sit on someone’s shoulder and need to be out in front. Pace judgment, stride pattern, needing to have a clear view can all have an impact on an athlete’s preference. I think if you come from a distance background, you’re probably better suited to sitting on someone’s shoulder, whereas a short sprinter might prefer clear air. I could run 44 flat solo running but I could run 43 if I could get someone else to take me round. This is classic KRISS AKABUSI from 1991. Someone does the work for you, and you just go past them and make a break for it late on in the race. That suited me down to the ground.

The 1991 World Championships men’s race was a game-changer  In Tokyo, Britain famously won the gold medal by changing the running order and putting the fastest athlete, ROGER BLACK, who usually ran the anchor leg, out first and putting KRISS AKABUSI on the final leg. What I liked about it was they understood the race and their strengths as a team; good communication and trusting each other led to the gold medal. That’s what we are working towards, a common athlete-led goal, understanding what it takes to get all the athletes on the podium. For me as an athlete, it was always about winning medals and now, for most of our athletes, the best opportunities to do that come in the relay. Being on that podium is a special place.

How to use your fastest runner  Each team is different, and each race requires a different order. We’re trying to play a game of chess with the aim of winning the race. To do this an athlete might have to run on a leg that they aren’t especially comfortable with, but ultimately it is what is best for the team. Ideally being involved in the race early on gives you the best chance of winning a medal. As I’ve said before, no matter how good you are, you can’t chase down world-class athletes when they have a 30 to 40m head start.

Changeovers  The efficiency of the changeover is important – you can lose a lot of time here if you make an unforced error. I’ve made mistakes in changeovers; in the mixed relay in 2019 we didn’t practise it enough and I left slightly early and had my hand a little too high for the incoming runner. Time wise it probably cost me just 0.1 but more importantly my position in the race meant I was under pressure rather than running into space. In a good changeover, the baton doesn’t slow down, the athletes exit the exchange zone at speed and are able to get into their run without clashes, so speed perception and being aware of your surroundings are key to this. We will look to develop an athlete’s ability to take and receive a baton at speed over the next few years from the age group teams up into the senior programme so that we can always call upon an athlete to do a job and survive the challenging changeover area.

Tactics and coaching  You can have your race plan, but every race is different, so it is essential to be prepared to go and do it in whatever way it takes to get you a medal. It’s being aware of what’s going on ahead of you, what’s behind you, and knowing who’s on your leg, what their strengths are, what their weaknesses are and almost knowing what people are going to do before they do it. We need to get the basics taught to the athletes – simple things like not overtaking on bends and the ability to make good exchanges. However, the best teacher is going to be experience. Just getting out there and racing relays and making mistakes. We need to give the athletes opportunities to be competitive and make those mistakes in safe environments.

Facing up to the strongest teams  Anything is possible in a relay. Ideally, we would have a team of fast runners and we could set it up on paper and we should win, but that’s not what elite sport is about. If you can put an athlete in a position to challenge and interrupt someone’s race, they may not be able to compete to the best of their ability and then they become vulnerable. There isn’t much that can be done when you’re up against a low 43 second runner (men) or a 48 second runner (women) if you’re not within a second of them on the flat… but, if you’re there, racing with them, you’ll be surprised how much more an athlete can find in a team event!

KIPLIMO EQUALS WORLD 15K BEST  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Olympic and world 10,000m medallist JACOB KIPLIMO equalled the 15km road race world best mark of fellow Ugandan JOSHUA CHEPTEGEI by winning in (41:05) in Njimegen, Netherlands. There was no signs of any records as KIPLIMO ambled through 5km in a pedestrian (14:24) though that did contain a testing hill around the 4km mark. However the next 5km was blitzed in (13:25) and he was through 10km in (27:49). The real damage though was done in the last 3km which he covered in an astonishing (7:41) as he completed the final 5km in (13:16) which gave him an incredible closing 10km of (26:41). His last kilometre was (2:31). Although (41:05) is the fastest ever performance in a standalone 15km race, it should be noted that KIPLIMO recorded a 15km split of (40:27) en-route to his half marathon world record in Lisbon in 2021.

ROGERS KIBET, also from Uganda, was second (42:44) ahead of Kenya’s AMOS SEREM (43:07) and home athletes FILMON TESFU (44:00) and MIKE FOPPEN (44.01). Kenya’s steeplechase world record-holder BEATRICE CHEPKOECH won the women’s race in (47:12) ahead of Israel’s LONAH CHEMTAI SALPETER (47:55). CHEPKOECH’S 5km splits were (15:35), (15:45) and (15:52). STELLA CHESANG of Uganda (48:02), Australia’s ISOBEL BATT-DOYLE (48:22) and Briton CHARLOTTE PURDUE (49:09) completed the top five positions.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

HISTORY OF THE LIDDIARD TROPHY  The 75th Liddiard Trophy took place at Kinsbury on 4 November.

The LIDDIARD TROPHY is a prestigious and historic cross country fixture hosted annually by Queens Park Harriers at Fryent Country Park in Kingsbury. Clubs from all over London compete for the famous prize which commemorates MR E.J. LIDDIARD (pictured below), the longest-surviving founder member of the club. He was one of a group of pupils at St Jude’s Institute who decided to create a sports club involving athletics and football among other activities (The footballers, incidentally, would end up breaking away and merging with Christ Church Rangers to form the modern-day Queens Park Rangers). He was with the club up until his death in 1946.

In his honour, the Hoops held the inaugural LIDDIARD TROPHY meet in 1947. The race was won by Shaftesbury Harriers (later becoming Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers). This club which would go on to have a storied history with the event, winning it several times in the 1970s and 1980s, fielding teams littered with internationals. At its height, the meet attracted around 300 competitors.

The TROPHY   The LIDDIARD is a team event which has arguably one of the most eye-catching prizes in UK athletics, a solid silver depiction of a runner, complete in casing. The trophy has been awarded to the winning team since the race’s inception.

The PEOPLE   While victory is the goal for some, the race itself is a reminder of the selflessness of the running community. Take CECIL GITTENS, a man who joined Queens Park Harriers in the same year of LIDDIARD’S death, 1946. Up until his passing a few of years ago, he was still an active member of club, attending committee meetings and keeping the Hoops moving along.

And if you plan to be around on race day, be sure to look out for PETER HUNT, another LIDDIARD contemporary, who helped to rescue Queens Park Harriers from folding essentially on his own in the early 1970s. Still a member, PETER comes down every year from his current home in south Wales to oversee the LIDDIARD to ensure its smooth running.

NORTH WEST LONDON LEAGUE – Took place at Kingsbury on 4 November.
Some of you may remember the song “Things could only get better”, well it did. The result at the first NWLL at Greenford was outstanding with 21 runners, last Saturday the result at Kingsbury was exceptional with 38 runners toeing the line.
The Under 11 Boys and Girls teams repeated their Greenford win, Under 13 Boys and Girls finished in 2nd place, Under 15 Girls 4th, Under 17 Women 7th, Under 17 Men 8th and Under 15 Boys 7th.
Individually DENNYS PASCAL repeated his win in the Under 11 Boys race and AIMEE PORTER won the Under 13 Girls race, also top 5 finishes from Under 11 Girls GRACE ROONEY 2nd, SIENNA DARCY 3rd and Under 13 Boys EDWARD PASCAL finishing 2nd.

I joined Shaftesbury in early 1984, and considered myself to be a resionable club runner, road running suited me and cross country was a struggle. We were having success in all age-groups in the Metropolitan League, with the Senior Men fielding between 30 to 40 runners on a regular basis. The younger age-groups also had large turnouts as well, with many of them staying on to support the Senior Men’s race. The first Women’s races were in 1994.
My point is some of you are probably just like me, a reasoable club runner.  Therefore why not consider competing in the not too distant future, and as in 1984 you will be helping to build the team spirit even further.

Under 11 Boys (2000m)DENNYS PASCAL 1st (6.19), HARRISON HENDERSON 4th (6.31), ARI RUBENSTEIN 5th (6.39), JENSEN DAY 6th (6.42), RYLE SINGARAYER 10th (6.52), LUCAS XIE 12th (6.54), ROCKY PHILLIPS 25th (7.22), JAMES BERNSTEIN 29th (7.35), PRINCE-MOSES JOHN 34th (7.47) 51 runners finished
Team Result 1st SBH (16 points), 2nd London Heathside (68), 3rd Highgate Harriers (68), 4th SBH B (76) 15 teams finished.

HOW TO MASTER A HORIZONTAL JUMPS RUN-UP  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph of MILTIADIS TENTOGLOU taken by MARK SHEARMAN.

We break down the fundamental elements required for the first section of your long or triple jump. The run-up is the must-do sprint for the horizontal jumper. The ability to accelerate then hit and hold maximum velocity must be married to rhythm and accuracy. Not training the run-up systematically is a common mistake. It has to be a deliberate “phasing” of acceleration and optimised speed usage if the jumper is to produce a step pattern which enables the  take-off board to be hit time after time.

Acceleration phase The first steps are crucial – push too hard and the run-up will not build as it should. The same applies if you don’t push enough or push untidily. I believe it’s best to use a standing start as this enables the athlete to be more deliberate and therefore accurate. The pressure sent through the track on the first six to eight steps must be controlled. Similar mechanics to a sprint start should be used, although torso inclination angles will not be so great.

Alignment phase  The next six to eight steps are all about smoothly coming into an upright position, usually high knee sprinting. Hips and chest should also be elevated, but the direction of effort must be forward – this might sound obvious but many jumpers don’t transfer their momentum toward the board sufficiently. The real and imagined sensation of going forwards down the run-up will facilitate setting up the take-off and getting the right combination of horizontal and vertical take-off velocity.  The hips must therefore travel in the direction of the take-off. From a coaching perspective this is all to do with heel recovery and the dynamic movement of the foot from the back of the body to the front near to/over knee height. Above all, there must be relaxation.

Attack phase As the jumper approaches the last six or so steps of their run-up, they need to be nearing optimum take-off speed. Additionally, specific positioning of the last three steps for both long and triple jumps is required. It is not enough to just sprint through those steps to hit the board and make the take-off. Let’s look at the two horizontal jumps and their attack phases.

Long jump The last three steps are a bit of a long jump dark art. Very basically these steps are active, the jumper should push from the first step out into the penultimate which should be instructed to be flat footed (in reality the heel will lead into the contact) and transition equally quickly into the take-off step. The three steps should have a “da da-da” rhythm. The specific set-up will encourage the hips to move through the take-off better and enable the free (swing) leg to move forward of the hip at take-off to achieve the crucial held post-board take-off drive.

Triple jump The triple jumper needs to impart less vertical velocity at take-off compared to the long jumper. They need to preserve speed for their following phases. Most triple jumpers run through the take-off with less setting on the penultimate step, however some do lower their centre of mass more akin to the long jumper. Pablo Pichardo uses greater hop vertical velocity compared to other jumpers and thus the set on the penultimate step enables that trajectory.

Training methods Do run-ups to the pit with take-off. There are numerous vital reasons for this:

Spatial awareness. Judging distance at speed is a skill and therefore doing it with a pit in view makes this very, very specific. I’d recommend that jumpers sight the board early on and only lift their eyes during the attack phase.

The need to make a take-off will introduce correct step mechanics for the last three steps.

  • Make sure to use boards (real or marked with tape) that are at the correct distance from the pit. For the long jump, some tracks use 2m and even 3m boards from the sandpit. If you are used to the more common 1m board then going to a pit with a greater board to pit distance can create issues. Practise and therefore be specifically ready.
  • Break the run-up down into its phases and repeat those. Practise the acceleration phase on its own, then the acceleration and alignment phase and then the complete run-up.
  • Do 3-4 of each. Doing this will create rhythm, accuracy and replicability.
  • Time the phases/run-up where possible. Knowing the optimum speeds generated can help develop consistency and correct distribution of effort. You want optimum speed to be two to three steps out. What you don’t want is max run-up velocity 10m or so from the board, it needs to be around 6m out at least. You will need a specific timing system to identify this.

PHOTOGRAPH’S – From time to time we have photographs of our members taken at meetings or presentations which we would like to use both on the website or incorporated within our report to our local newspaper. Can you please let me know if you do NOT want your photograph to be published. Also, I would appreciate if you could send me any photographs, which I can then publish on the website and newsletter.

FACEBOOK – Photographs can be found on the SBH page.

CAN YOU HELP PLEASEI would welcome any contributions From Yourselves, any impending marriages, or additions to the family, any running or competing incidents, also past warm weather training/holidays (No Club 24 please). Currently the response has been excellent, but if you have anything that could make it into next week’s Newsletter – please email me.
