RESULTS
Just to clarify, that the results I publish can be different to those that are shown on the Power of 10. The differences relate to seasons and personal best performances. For example in the recent EYAL results, an athlete in the 200m ran (24.1), and on his profile his season’s best was shown as (23.88) indoors. As the 200m indoors and outdoors are totally different type of events, I had shown the (24.1) as a season’s best.
The Power of 10 publishes separate UK rankings for indoor and outdoor performances.

PARIS WAS INCROYABLE BUT HOW CAN ATHLETICS MAINTAIN THE MOMENTUM?  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

SEB COE admits it is the ‘holy grail’ for every sport and he offers some ideas as 2024 Games draw to a close. Eleven days of athletics in Paris this month saw three world records and 13 Olympic records. Every session at the Stade the France was full as the capacity crowd watched SYDNEY MCLAUGHLIN-LEVRONE, FAITH KIPYEGON, COLE HOCKER, SIFAN HASSAN and others etch their names into the Olympic history books. What’s more, the global nature of the sport was illustrated by 75 nations enjoying top eight placings. So where do we go from here? How can SEB COE and his team at World Athletics build on this and keep the momentum going?

“It’s the holy grail,” said COE as he met the media on the final day of the Games. “The challenge for every sport is to remain salient and exciting and to try to get new audiences. It’s what we spend most of our waking hours thinking about.” COE mentioned the importance of the new World Athletics Ultimate Championships at the end of the 2026 season in Budapest to give fans a global event to focus on that year in addition to reconfiguring the season so that everything ends with the biggest event on the calendar. “The LA Olympics (2028) is also important to us,” he added. “The American market is a difficult one.”

COE is well aware of the challenge. “US athletes were mobbed leaving the stadium here but they can walk through their home towns in anonymity,” he noted. COE pointed to the Netflix Sprint series and other documentaries that have been released this year such as programmes on Daley Thompson and Linford Christie. But he acknowledged that most weeks it is difficult to find the live athletics event you want to watch due to the sheer number of TV channels, web streams and geo-blocking barriers involved. “My brother is a US citizen and it (being unable to find athletics to watch) is the weekend rant I usually get from him. We do need to get the sport on free to air, though. It’s very important to us.” There are also a number of innovations being tested, with the mixed 4x100m being among them. “They are data driven and have to make a positive difference if we are going to bring any of them in,” he said.

World Athletics need to get the athletes more on side, though. MILTOS TENTOGLOU, for example, the multiple global long jump champion, once again had a dig about World Athletics in Paris. “Athletes like myself are never consulted about changes,” he said after winning gold. For now, though, the sport can bask in the satisfaction of a brilliant Olympics having come to a finish. COE was full of praise for the organising committee too. “I know how hard it is to put a Games on,” the former London 2012 chairman said. “It’s the toughest piece of project management that any city is faced with in normal times. We had 11 days of extraordinary sumptuous athletics here.” COE says the most surreal moment of the Games was “having SNOOP DOGG on one side and SIMONE BILES on the other and finding myself explaining the ins and outs of the 1500m to them”.

He added: “At that moment the sport was actually cool! It’s the first time my kids have thought anything I’ve done on this planet has been remotely cool.” COE  also believes technological advancements will help the sport continue to thrive as well. Improved tracks and shoes have contributed to him falling down the all-time 800m rankings in recent weeks from No.3 to No.8 but he said: “Are we better off for tech? Indisputably. Does it help create more exciting athletics and athletes with longer careers? Yes.” World Athletics even changed part of its rulebook last year to allow Paris to put different synthetic surfaces down on various parts of the track used by runners, jumpers or throwers in order to help athletes from various disciplines perform better. “I don’t want to be the president that’s the equivalent of the “computer that says ‘no’,” he said, “but at the same time we do have checks and balances.”

Finally, he made this point. “I was asked many times what we would you do when USAIN BOLT left the sport. It is the same question that boxing faced when MUHAMMAD ALI retired. “I said ‘mark my words, new athletes will come through. And they have. “We have a greater band-with across broader range of disciplines in the sport than ever before. In Paris we saw the 105th country in history of the sport winning a medal – with Saint Lucia, Pakistan and Dominica taking titles.”

Whatever ideas COE has, the sport won’t benefit from his guidance for much longer. He is now into his final term as World Athletics president and said on Sunday he will give “serious thought” about throwing his hat into the ring to succeed THOMAS BACH as head of the International Olympic Committee. “I’ve always made it clear that if the opportunity arose, I will obviously give it serious thought,” he said. “The opportunity has arisen and clearly I need to think about that. Of course I’m going to consider this.”

There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

OLYMPIC GAMES – SCOTT LINCOLN (HCA) SHOT PUTFriday 2 August – This being SCOTT’S 2nd Olympics, was drawn in Pool B in the qualification round, and from the onset was struggling to find his best form, and his best put was (19.69m) finishing in 12th place.

OLYMPIC GAMES – ZHARNEL HUGHES 100M Saturday 3 August – ZHARNEL came to the games feeling in reasonable shape, following his hamstring injury earlier this year. ZHARNEL was drawn in Heat 8 in round 1, and following a steady start, his transition was smooth to eventually crossed the line in 3rd place (10.03 w0.2), qualifying for Sunday’s semi-final.
Sunday 4 August – ZHARNEL was drawn in Heat 3 of the semi-final, and it was clear from the race that ZHARNEL was struggling and finished in 6th place (10.01 w0.5). Post-race ZHARNEL said “It’s not the easiest thing to come back from, especially what I had. I had a grade two [tear] on the outside of the hamstring, so obviously not getting me enough races to get me in race shape was my issue.”

On Monday ZHARNEL announced he has withdrawn from the 200m event with a hamstring injury.

OLYMPIC GAMES – CHARLIE DOBSON (HCA) 400M Sunday 4 August – CHARLIE came to the games after running a personal best (44.23) in London recently. CHARLIE was drawn in Heat 6 in round 1, and ran a quality race, looking very strong in the final 100m, winning in a time of (44.96). Now on to the semi-final on Tuesday.
Tuesday 6 August – CHARLIE was drawn in Semi-Final 1, which was possibly the toughest of the 3 Semi-Finals. Starting from Lane 8, CHARLIE ran a strong 200m, and coming into the home straight was lying in 4th place, although he maintained his speed to the line he finished 4th (44. 48) just failing to qualify for the Final.

OLYMPIC GAMES – LINA NEILSEN 400M HURDLESSunday 4 August – LINA came to first games following her personal best (54.43) in the recent European final. LINA was drawn in Heat 4 in round 1, and ran a well-controlled race, and finished 2nd in a time of (54.65), qualifying 8th fastest for Tuesday’s semi-final.
Tuesday 6 August – LINA was drawn in Semi-Final 1. Starting from Lane 6, LINA after hurdling quite well, she reached the 200m in 4th place, coming in to the home straight LINA was contesting 3rd place. Coming up to the final hurdle LINA seemed to misjudge her stride pattern, and caught the top of the hurdle which sent her crashing to the ground and unfortunately out of the race.

OLYMPIC GAMES – LIZZIE BIRD 3000M STEEPLECHASE Sunday 4 AugustLIZZIE was drawn in Heat 2 in round 1. From the bell the pace was steady, they passed 1000m in (3.10.93) with LIZZIE in 7th place, 2000m was reached in (6:17.0) with LIZZIE 5th. The pace started to increase and entering into the home straight LIZZIE was in 6th place, and with 30m to go LIZZIE saw a gap on the inside and managed to slip through to finish in 4th place (9:16.46) qualifying for Tuesday’s Final.
Tuesday 6 AugustLIZZIE finished 9th in the Tokyo Olympics, and has looked in good form to better that result in today’s Final. From the start seven of the favourites blasting out over the opening few laps, almost at world record pace, LIZZIE was amongst a group of athletes some 20m adrift. On the final lap LIZZIE looked strong and in the home straight, charged through to finish in a superb 7th place (9:04.35) setting a new National Record, UK No.1 on the UK all-time list and of course a new Club Record.

OLYMPIC GAMES NICK PERCY DISCUS Monday 5 AugustNICK came to the games after throw a personal best (67.73m) earlier this year. NICK in his 1st Olympics, was drawn in Pool A in the qualification round, and was slightly below par throwing (61.81m) finishing in 12th place.

MEET THE COACH: HELENA DUPLANTIS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

We speak to the Swede who stepped in to help her son, MONDO, at high school and has been a key component in his rise to success on the global stage in the pole vault. HELENA DUPLANTIS grew up with athletics. Her father was the head of her local club in Sweden and competed in pole vault until the age of 80. There are pictures of her as a three-year-old playing in the long jump pit. After competing in her first track meeting at the age of six, she developed into an all-round talent, representing her country in the hepathlon. A scholarship to Louisiana State University (LSU) took her to the USA in 1985, where she met her husband GREG, also a pole vaulter. They have four children who were all encouraged to be involved in sport but it is their son, MONDO, who has risen to global prominence, seemingly making it his mission to create pole vault history at every turn. The serial world record-breaker, also the reigning Olympic, world and European champion, is coached by his parents, who also work with Belgian former European under-23 champion BEN BROEDERS. GREG looks after pole vault specific elements while HELENA focuses on strength and conditioning. It is a recipe that certainly works.

Who were your first coaching influences? I started running track when I was really young. My dad was my coach and then I moved because he felt like he didn’t have the experience to coach me to the next level. I got a coach in a different town and one more after that before I went to LSU. When I got there, I worked with the coaches that were on staff there – people like Loren Seagrave and DAN PFAFF.

How did your own coaching journey start? I really didn’t think a lot about track as far as being part of coaching, I was just busy with being a soccer mom, a baseball mom and then it wasn’t until MONDO started high school that I felt like there was a need for something, if that’s what he wanted to do. I felt he needed some more guidance from his coaches. The system in the United States is so different. Everything is school-based. I was used to the track clubs in Sweden, where you pretty much have the freedom to search for the best coach to fit you, but here you are still confined to what they have available at school. After his first international meet, when he won the World Youth Championships in Cali 2015, I really felt that MONDO was extremely talented. That was when he started high school, at 15. He quit all the other sports because his older brother had already tried combining baseball and track and field and that was pretty much impossible. I started getting involved in the high school track and field, but with the girls. Our neighbour was the head coach for the women and he was like: ‘Since you did the heptathlon, you could be a great help for the track’. When he offered me the chance to start helping out I thought it would be a good idea, to see what MONDO was actually doing at high school. MONDO’S PE coach really didn’t care about track at all and then he said: “I don’t know anything about pole vault, so your dad can take care of that part.” The first two years in high school, MONDO pretty much showed up to track PE and he used to be told: “Go and do this in the weight room”. Nothing was planned, it was just whatever he felt like doing. They did a little running on their own, too, and there was a little group of three pole vaulters who would come twice a week to our back yard to work on more pole vault specific things. After two years, the coach left and then the new coach said: “I don’t know anything about pole vault, you can do whatever you want.” That’s when I started writing MONDO’S workout plan.

What did you start to enjoy about the process? I’ve always loved track and I felt like there was a need for it [specific coaching for MONDO]. The first thing I did was a personal training class and then after that I took a series of USA Track and Field coaching certificates but it was just fun to be able to go to school and be part of your kids’ sports.

Could you sum up your philosophy and how you developed it? – I went back and looked at who coached me, what I liked about their styles and what worked for me. And then of course you have to look at the athlete you have. We coach as a team. I have a relaxed philosophy, but I think that comes from MONDO because he is a very “feely” person. His training, his jumping, his technique – it’s a lot about feel. Sometimes I think I’m maybe too relaxed but it’s very much like: “What do you feel like? How do you feel today?” I’m more flexible. When I grew up and I had a workout, it didn’t matter what had gone on that day or how I felt – if it was written on the paper, I had to do it and I think in some ways that was detrimental to my development. I just went back to see how I felt, what worked, what didn’t work, and think about what I could do differently as a coach. I think MONDO has an advantage because both myself and GREG could do that and make sure he didn’t make the same mistakes we did. I’m not an authoritarian coach, for sure.

I think a lot of athletes would relate or react better to that kind of coaching Some people say things like: ‘Oh my God, can you imagine how much better Mondo would have been if he was more regimented, more on the schedule, more organised and planned? But that kind of environment doesn’t fit him. He freaks out if there’s too much planning and things are too rigid. It doesn’t work for him. I’m not saying our approach would work for everybody, but it works for him.

Does being aware of how talented he is create an extra pressure for you and Greg as coaches? Of course, yes. My approach is that I write the workout plan for MONDO to get better and I listen to the feedback he gives me. In Sweden the whole focus is always to do things [with the aim] of not getting hurt. That’s always at the back of my mind too but [the aim is] always to get better. MONDO is very level-headed and easy to deal with, too. I know a lot of pole vaulters who like to do very dangerous things [away from the track], but he’s not the kind of person who likes to jump out of planes or race fast cars. He’s more at home on the golf course. It’s always in the back of my mind to do the right thing but I don’t think we walk around and worry about it all, because I think that would also make MONDO worried. The focus is always on staying healthy and getting better. If I’m stressed it makes him stressed. I’m always trying to just take a deep breath and he’s so confident and he’s so good in what he’s doing that I just trust in him.

People forget how young MONDO still is. Have you changed his workouts much as he has developed physically? It’s pretty much the same cycle that we still do and we’re not planning on making any huge changes. But he’s interesting in that if there’s something specific I want him to work on and I nag too much he’ll say: “Stop that. That’s boring or it’s too much detail. Just let me run and jump”. But then if he sees someone else doing something – for example, during the World Indoor Championships he watched MARCELL JACOBS doing a warm-up/block start before running the 60m – he absorbs that and copies it. That’s the way he learned. He’s not a drills person. GREG isn’t either and he always says: “Who cares if you’re good at drills? It’s the result that matters.” He started so very young and he just started because he wanted to jump just like his older brothers. GREG compares the pole vault to playing golf. There are all sorts of drills you can do but it doesn’t teach you the actual event because you have to jump the full jump. With golf, are you just going to stop half swing? Is that the drill? When I look back, MONDO has done a lot of jumps in his life.

What piece of advice would you pass on to someone who is interested in being a coach? Track is so diverse. Pole vault coaching is so different from long distance coaching to sprint coaching. I feel that, if you have the experience, if you have the passion then you have a lot to offer. We definitely need a lot more track coaches.

What do you think are the characteristics of a good coach? To always know what you don’t know. Some people have one way of coaching and that’s it. But there’s so much to discuss and so many different approaches to coaching an athlete that it feels like you never stop learning. It’s not like: “I’ve taken this class so now I am a coach.” You’re always going to have such different athletes in different situations that it feels like it’s just an ongoing process. There’s always stuff you can learn. I love to see what other coaches do and don’t do. Everybody’s working towards the same goals but everybody has such a different approach.

Where do you find those little moments of satisfaction? As far as the strength and conditioning goes, if the athletes run well and faster in our little time trials then that makes me really happy. When they improve their running, I think that’s the most satisfaction I get. That’s when you can transfer into bigger poles and get faster on the runway.

JOAQUIM CRUZ LOOKS BACK AT ICONIC 800M WIN AT 1984 OLYMPICS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph taken by MARK SHEARMAN.

Brazilian middle-distance legend talks about why finding love on the eve of the Los Angeles Games helped him win gold 40 years ago. It has been 40 years since JOAQUIM CRUZ beat SEB COE to the Olympic 800m title in Los Angeles. He still looks bronzed and supremely fit, but he has flecks of grey in his hair these days and his battle-weary body rejects running. Aged 61, he prefers to walk. “I find enjoyment and all the balance I need in the morning with a three-mile walk,” he smiles. “I used to run but it was too aggressive and hurting me a lot. I sometimes shuffle or take the bike if I want to sweat. But I don’t miss running.” In the history of middle-distance running there are few sights quite as majestic as CRUZ in full flight during the summer of 1984. The tall Brazilian with the long raking stride dominated the 800m at the LA Games, surging away from COE in the final to clock an Olympic record of (1:43.00). Three weeks later in Cologne he ran (1:41.77) to miss COE’S world record by four hundredths of a second. Altogether he ran inside (1:43) half a dozen times as he lit up the tracks of Europe. Despite injuries, he came close to successfully defending his title in Seoul four years later, too, finishing runner-up to PAUL ERENG of Kenya. For the past 19 years CRUZ has worked at US Paralympics and says he rarely looks back to the 1980s. But his memory of those years is still sharp and he tells a great story from the 1981 World Cup in Rome where he finished a distant sixth aged just 18 in a race dominated by COE. “A couple of days before the competition I saw SEB training and I was fascinated by how he was able to move,” CRUZ remembers. “My race in Rome was terrible. I choked. But I was putting my sweats back on and he was kind enough to stop by and shake my hand and say a few words. I don’t think he realised that I didn’t speak any English at the time, though!

“Later I promised myself that I wouldn’t feel that way again in a race. So in 1984 we were waiting for the medal ceremony in LA and I asked him ‘hey, what did you tell me in Rome when you shook my hand?’ He said, ‘I told you that you were going to be a great champion’. I was lost for words.”

COE’S prediction came true as CRUZ claimed the Olympic crown three years after finishing well behind the Briton in Rome. It was a rocky road to Los Angeles, however. At the 1983 World Championships in Helsinki, for example, CRUZ and PETER ELLIOTT battled each other to take the lead and, after running each other into the ground with a searing pace, they were both over taken by WILLI WULBECK of West Germany in the closing stages, with CRUZ finishing third and ELLIOTT fourth. “It was the best experience of my career!” CRUZ surprisingly says. “What happened in Helsinki had to happen in order for me to win in LA. “In Helsinki I had one plan only – to take the lead and run from the front. I couldn’t sleep because I was playing the tactic through in my mind all night. My coach told me to go and execute it, but PETER ELLIOTT messed me up! “After 300m he took the lead. I thought ‘what is this guy doing?’ For a whole lap I was fighting him for the lead, which was not part of my plan. I regained the lead with 100m to go but lost the race. And there was the lesson to learn.”

CRUZ returned to Oregon – where he had moved to study after growing up in humble conditions as the youngest of six children in Taguatinga, Brazil – and he vowed to train more diligently than ever ahead of the 1984 Olympics. He also fell in love and feels it was the missing ingredient that helped him reach top form at the Games. “LA was the peak of everything,” he explains. “In 1983-84 I was experiencing a very special phase of my life – a balanced phase. I was in an ‘equilibrium’, emotionally, physically and spiritually. “Emotionally it was when I met my future wife (MARY) and I was hit by a ‘love lightning’ and this helped everything I did. It was the first time I fell in love with my training and everything I was doing. “Training became much easier and I was feeling things that I didn’t think a human can feel, unless that person is in love. I was using that passion in my preparation and I experienced a supreme feeling during the whole build-up to the Games. When you are passionate about what you do, you can accomplish crazy things.

When I went in the stadium to run the final, my spirit was not there anymore,” he continues. “It was miles from California and all the way in Oregon where my future wife was watching me. I was watching myself through her eyes seeing me delivering what I delivered. I felt like a warrior. I was on my journey and LA was the biggest battle of my life and the biggest dragon to kill. I was doing it for myself, my coach, my country and my loved one. In the story of Beowulf he was going off to kill the dragon and knew he would return to his loved one. And I felt like that.” The Olympic final was stacked with not only COE but Americans EARL JONES and JOHNNY GRAY, defending champion STEVE OVETT, future world champion BILLY KONCHELLAH plus EDWIN KOECH of Kenya and DONATO SABIA of Italy, who sadly died three years ago from Covid aged just 56. Did CRUZ feel invincible? “Yes!” he says without hesitation. “There were two athletes who were my role models – ALBERTO JUANTORENA and SEBASTIAN COE. I thought to beat Sebastian Coe you had to have speed and be able to move from A to B really quick.

“I knew he’d made a mistake in 1980 and so I was preparing to see what he would do in 1984 because I knew he wouldn’t make that mistake again. I wasn’t worried about the pace as I felt unbeatable. I had supreme fitness. If the pace was fast, I could handle it and if it was slow, I had the speed. But it was right in the middle and I was able to handle the race – and COE – at the same time.” Could he have run faster that day? “I think so. With 300m to go I would usually start to pick up the pace and I practised this a lot in training. But in this final in LA I had to tell myself ‘don’t go yet… don’t go yet’. So I held back until about 100m to go. Then I felt the goose bumps. The lanes melted away and I could only see my lane. I could have run another 200 metres maybe after that.”

CRUZ achieved these feats despite initially being a reluctant runner who played basketball during his youth and didn’t particularly enjoy athletics. There were also reports at the time that he had one leg longer than the other and had to wear orthotics to try to solve the problem. It’s not a story, it’s a reality!” he says, explaining that his right femur is two centimetres shorter than his left.

Did it cause an unusual amount of injuries? “It was a probably combination of things,” he says. “The leg length discrepancy and also my intensity. I did not like to move slowly and LUIZ (DE OLIVEREIRA) was a very intensive coach. I was really shy growing up but the sport was a way to express myself and I used it to show off.”

The men’s 800m is enjoying a good year in 2024 with three men so far clocking (1:41) and a further eight running (1:42). CRUZ doesn’t follow the current scene particularly closely but he is aware of the spate of fast times and says: “It should have happened a long time ago. I thought in 2012 when RUDISHA ran a world record, it would inspire a new generation to realise ‘wow, this is what’s possible’. But it faded and didn’t happen. “Yet now, with so many athletes running under (1:43) this year, it has become the expectation. If you’re not embracing this possibility, you should maybe go to find something else to do.” What could CRUZ run for 800m these days? “I would not even try!” he laughs. What could he have run in 1984 if he had access to super shoes, better tracks and improved training knowledge? “I don’t know,” he shrugs. “I was blessed with so many great runners in my time like SEBASTIAN COE, JAMES ROBINSON, PETER ELLIOTT, STEVE OVETT, SAID AOUITA and my Brazilians team-mates (JOSE LUIZ BARBOSA and AGBERTO GUIMARIAES). I had enough stimulation in that sense.

CLUB CONNECT AND EYAL RECOGNITION – We have received this communication from STUART PUGH who is the Officials Secretary for the Middlesex AA County.

Just wanted to share a story about my positive interactions with SBH athletes over the weekend at both the Club Connect relays at the London Diamond League and also at the EYAL on Sunday. All the relay teams at London were a credit to the club (I was in the call room as a judge) and I spoke to a few of them as they passed through. They were focussed but obviously excited about running in front of the London crowd.
I ran into a few of them again on Sunday and a couple of them recognised me and we had a lovely chat about their experience.

ELKIE BAKER  Although the results are not available as yet, ELKIE (2nd Claim) represented English Schools in the SIAB International in Camarthen on Saturday 20th July against Ireland, Scotland and Wales. She won a silver medal in the girls discus throwing (37.51m) despite pretty atrocious weather.

WHY DISCUS THROW STILL REIGNS SUPREME  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

This year is one of the most exciting years to date for one reason and one reason only, writes ZARA OBAMAKINWA, it’s Olympic year. As the 2024 season begins to heat up, Neuff Athletic ambassador and discus athlete ZARA OBAMAKINWA (UK U23 No.1) sheds some light on one of the most exciting events of the Olympics – the discus.

Origins of discus throwing If we take a look back into the ancient records of the event, it can be called an Olympic Games event for a reason. The discus is one of the original five events contested in the ancient games, where the pentathlon signified the perfect athlete. Think of the iconic ancient Greek statue of the discus thrower, which has captured people’s interest for centuries. Athletes competing in the pentathlon would throw a bronze discus weighing 9lb (4kg) as far as they could and the best out of five throws would be recorded, much like the modern version of the event. Sometimes beautifully engraved, early discus have been found weighing anywhere from 1.3kg to 6.6kg, made of stone, bronze, iron or wood. The ancient Olympics were banned around 1600 years ago as part of an effort to suppress paganism and non-Christian events. However, the ancient Grecian sculpture remained hugely popular, with many copies being made and eventually getting rediscovered by archaeologists in the 1700s. It was one of these statues that inspired a German teacher, CHRISTIAN GEORGE KOHLRAUSCH, to run experiments with his students to recreate the ancient sport in the 1870s. This ultimately led to discus throw being reintroduced in the first modern edition of the Olympics in 1896. Interestingly, the planning meeting had been in Paris in June 1894, exactly 130 years before this year’s upcoming Olympics. It didn’t take long for better throwing techniques to be developed, and the first athlete to use the now-popular technique of a full body rotation was the Czech born FRANTISEK JANDA-SUK, which earned him a silver medal in the 1900 edition.

Will a British discus thrower win this year? Naturally, many Brits are hoping for an athlete from the UK to make the Parisian podium. British interests in this year’s Olympic Games have now confirmed to be riding on two athletes: NICK PERCY and LAWRENCE OKOYE. PERCY has already thrown the Olympic A standard out in Ramona, Oklahoma in April and recent performances are also showing very good form. OKOYE has achieved the Olympic B standard and is currently ranked 23rd in the Road to Paris ‘24, a qualifying position.

Who will win the Olympic discus in 2024? OKOYE holds the British record with (68.24m) but PERCY went No.2 on the UK all-time rankings earlier this summer with 67.73m in Ramona. Now, let’s move onto the rest of the world. When it comes to this year’s discus competition, it is arguably one of the most unpredictable and competitive ones yet. In the women’s event, there are several competitors who are in for a chance at the gold. The reigning Olympic champion VALARIE ALLMAN will be looking to defend her title after claiming gold at the Tokyo Games. ALLMAN has been so consistent this year, having thrown nothing below (67m). After recently being confirmed for the US team, it’s safe to say that ALLMAN’S phenomenal capabilities in the sport could well be the country’s best chance of claiming victory for the second consecutive year in a row. BIN FENG, another world champion and Olympic finalist is also looking strong this season and MARRIKE STAINACKER has added another 3m to her PB this year to throw over (67m). SANDRA ELKASEVIC (née PERKOVIC), another veteran of the event who will be competing for Croatia, cannot be ruled out either.

In the men’s discus, we have some real big hitters all battling for the Olympic crown. MYKOLAS ALEKNA could be the out-and-out favourite at just 21 years old. Part of a throwing family dynasty that rivals some of the greatest sporting families, with world record-holders, European champions and various world medals. KRISTJAN CEH, world champion and newly crowned European champion who has just beaten ALEKNA for the title. MATTHEW DENNY, the Commonwealth champion and fourth place finisher in the Budapest World championships is looking in fine form. DANIEL STAHL, the reigning Olympic champion and two-time world champion. He will be back in Paris to defend his Olympic title against the rest of the world, which is looking like a tall order as of now as he is yet to break (70m), but his experience and pedigree in the event may hopefully see him through. ALEX ROSE, REGGIE JAGERS III and LUKAS WEILHAIDINGER are also worth watching as they may just come out and shock spectators across the globe.

Discus is one to watch! With its ancient origins and a future full of surprises, discus throw is an essential event that continues to shape the backbone of the modern Olympics and many other competitions across the globe. In a sense, it’s no wonder that the sport has been around for over 2700 years! Both men’s and women’s discus throwers have launched some of the farthest throws in modern day history and the limits of the event are being constantly pushed. With that being said, the discus is truly an event you cannot afford to miss!

DALEY DOCUMENTARY PAINTS REVEALING PORTRAIT OF OLYMPIC LEGEND  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.  Photograph taken by MARK SHEARMAN taken at the 1984 Olympics.

BBC programme about the iconic British decathlete is a must-watch for athletics fans young and old. The stylish and much-hyped Netflix series ‘Sprint’ has attracted much attention in recent weeks, but when it comes to track and field documentaries DALEY: Olympic Superstar is this summer’s quiet hit.

The life story of the two-time Olympic decathlon champion was tucked away on BBC2 this month but has enjoyed rave reviews from those who have seen it. Unlike the Netflix series, it is a rugged tale of a bona fide athletics legend which is long overdue being made. The documentary mixes beautiful archive footage with contemporary interviews with not only THOMPSON, who turns 66 this month, but CAITLYN JENNER (formerly BRUCE, the 1976 Olympic champion), SEB COE, STEVE CRAM, TESSA SANDERSON, DENISE LEWIS, LINFORD CHRISTIE, COLIN JACKSON, FRANK DICK, his early coach BOB MORTIMER, swimmer and ex-girlfriend SHARRON DAVIES and, maybe best of all, his giant adversary JURGEN HINGSEN. “I don’t think I would have trained as hard if I didn’t have him,” says Thompson on his big German rival. Since the programme aired, COE even admits he learned a few things in the documentary about THOMPSON despite being a close friend and regular training partner in the gym for half a century. THOMPSON talks openly in the documentary about his rogue of a father who was shot dead when he was a youngster. His mother, meanwhile, didn’t come to watch any of his athletics competitions until 1986. “Isn’t that strange?” he asks, in one of several moments of raw reflection. THOMPSON visits the working class Notting Hill area he grew up in and chats to a lifelong friend from his childhood. There are nostalgic scenes of him training and competing as a teenager – surviving on hand-outs and living in a council flat in his early years – and you get a sense of the kind of grit, determination and unwavering belief in himself that he possessed to become the world’s greatest all-round sportsman in the 1980s.

JENNER, for example, tells an amusing story about the 1976 Montreal Olympics when he won gold and THOMPSON finished 18th on his 18th birthday. “DALEY wouldn’t stop talking,” remembers JENNER. “I’m in the middle of trying to win the Games and he just kept asking me questions.”

JENNER adds: “After I won, some media guy asked me who would win next time and I said ‘his name is DALEY THOMPSON because he’s hungry and he wants to learn’.” Such was his athleticism, a recent poll in AW judged him Britain’s greatest ever Olympian. As well as his Olympic titles, of course, he won the world title in 1983, two European golds, three Commonwealth crowns and set world records to boot. THOMPSON was incredibly competitive and the ultimate alpha male in an athletics arena. This is perhaps best illustrated when he reveals that he didn’t want his friend COE to successfully defend his Olympic 1500m title in 1984 as it would detract slightly from his own achievement of winning decathlon gold in 1980 and 1984. No topics are off limits. He is asked about his outrageous t-shirt worn at the 1984 Olympics which asked if the world’s second greatest athlete was gay – a jibe blatantly aimed at CARL LEWIS. Similarly, the documentary tackles his controversial whistling on the podium in LA and his accidental swearing on the BBC sports personality show. Largely in each case, he comes across as a regretful figure who wishes some of the incidents hadn’t happened. He didn’t mean to offend anyone, he says, but at the same time doesn’t give the impression he’s lost much sleep over the years since they happened.

THOMPSON has a reputation for being prickly with media and there are plenty of horror stories in the sport. “At times he was obnoxious and seemed to have a chip on both shoulders,” says long-time Sun journalist COLIN HART. One of the mildest examples is that he would mischievously challenge journalists to list the 10 events of the decathlon, in order, before granting them an interview. While I wasn’t faced with that question, I’ve spoken to him a few times over the years and he’s always been pleasant. Indeed, when the wind is blowing in the right direction there are surely few athletes who are so charming. Maybe THOMPSON has mellowed over the years. “It took him to 65 to grow up,” says DAVIES, “but there you go.” He admits in the documentary that he wasn’t the best father to his children during their early years and regrets getting divorced. “It was probably a mistake,” he says, “as I was going through a period when I wasn’t too happy.” But there are also heart-warming clips of him accompanying his son, ELLIOT, to decathlon competitions, which include winning the British title in 2022. THOMPSON also reveals he discovered his mum had kept “a shrine” of athletics memorabilia despite barely watching him compete in person. “If people are going to remember me,” he says, “I’d like to think that I always gave my best and am the father of five wonderful children,” before adding with a grin: “And an incredible decathlete.”

There are some gaps in the programme. I would have liked to have seen footage of him winning the inaugural world title in Helsinki, for example. But I am splitting hairs as obviously not everything can be included in a 90-minute programme that is otherwise tightly edited. Fans of 1980s nostalgia, will enjoy seeing a cameo from Superstars plus the vintage computer game that bears his name. “There’s not a day since 1984 when someone doesn’t come up to me wanting to talk about the game,” he says. “I wish I’d had a pound for every person who’d used it.” THOMPSON’S injury struggles in the twilight of his career and subsequent dalliance with football are also covered. “I was having loads of fun,” THOMPSON says about football, “but it wasn’t ‘being the best in the world’ kind of fun.”

The most emotional moment is perhaps at near the end when he revisits the Coliseum in Los Angeles and meets HINGSEN. The inevitable trash talk ensues but it is good natured and tongue-in-cheek. THOMPSON reveals a new t-shirt too, which reads: “JURGEN, it’s not the winning but the taking part.” “I feel happy when I see him,” HINGSEN smiles, as the pair reminisce on their titanic battles of yesteryear. “He’s my better half. That’s my DALEY, that’s my friend.” When it comes to a verdict on an inspirational documentary about the world’s greatest decathlete, what score can I possibly offer than a perfect 10 out of 10?

MEET THE COACH: PATRICK SANG  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

GEORGE MALLETT talks to the mentor who has masterminded the careers of some of the most successful distance runners in history. Few coaches have ever guided quite so many Olympic champions as PATRICK SANG. For over 20 years, the 3000m steeplechase Olympic and world silver medallist has led the Global Sports Communication Camp in Kaptagat, western Kenya, writing ELIUD KIPCHOGE his first ever training plan and masterminding the successful comeback of FAITH KIPYEGON after the birth of her daughter. Even Uganda’s 5000m Olympic and 10,000m world champion JOSHUA CHEPTEGEI has spent time under his watch. A total of 25 athletes stay in SANG’S camp, looking after themselves as he drives in from nearby Eldoret to manage their day-to-day training. With some of his athletes undergoing possibly the most testing times of their careers, he sat down with AW to talk about their legacies. knowing full well that this summer’s Paris Olympics may define his own.

How would you describe yourself as an athlete? Maybe a self-made athlete. I discovered that I was able to run by accident in class competitions. I got a scholarship [to America] and then all the way until when I retired I was basically self-coached 80 per cent of the time.

Did this make you realise you might make a good coach for others? What else made you want to follow that path? That probably influenced my decision to help athletes. Towards the end of my career,  people joined my training and they just followed my programme. I was training for the 3000m steeplechase but people were following. I could also see that, besides being a coach, you need to be able to lead. The fact that people would follow my programme showed that I was also a leader of some sort.

How did you get better as a coach? To coach somebody else you have to be trained. You have to acquire the knowledge. After my running career I went for coaching training for long and middle distance, from the lowest level to the highest level. But when you train you use yourself and the way you used to do things as a case study. You can refer to what you used to do. That’s why you go to school and then you go for practical training. My practical training came before the actual learning, so it was easy to refer.

Can you explain your philosophy? My philosophy is that, to have a successful relationship between coach and athlete, you have to have total trust. An athlete that trusts you, even when you tell them to run something that is not normal, they can do it because they trust you. Many good athletes who are talented, you train them, they listen to so many voices, they achieve maybe 80 per cent instead of 100 per cent. The ones who give total trust to the relationship, they achieve 100 per cent.

Talking of those athletes, FAITH KIPYEGON said she’s never been so surprised as when she broke the world 5000m record last year with (14:05.20) in Paris. Were you? No because I am the one who designed the programme. She never even saw that the training plan had changed. I don’t remember her saying: “Why are we doing these things?” So that qualifies what I said before about the philosophy. Because if somebody trusts you and you have the knowledge of exactly what you are doing, you will never take them in the wrong direction. With FAITH, trying to move towards 5000m was there for 2023 but she couldn’t wait for 2023 to start the preparation. You start from the first phase of the training which is the build-up stage, so you broaden the base. She was doing longer runs than before.

We’ve seen you take her on 40km long runs before. I don’t know many 1500m athletes that run that distance in training Even WYCLIFFE KINYAMAL, second in the 800m at the Xiamen Diamond League in (1:43), runs 40km. It’s not the way the other marathoners run it but you run varied by your ability. The guy is huge but he runs 40km. His first competition – (1:43.66). That’s why I’m saying you have the knowledge, you understand the ability of the person and then you make a mixture [of training] because coaching is also an art. Whatever mixture you put, it should take you to the ultimate goal.

Why do you think other coaches aren’t doing very long runs for middle distance athletes? I don’t know. The only person that came close to the way I do things is the father of JAKOB INGEBRIGTSEN (GJERT). We were engaged in a philosophy discourse one time in Zurich, discussing how we approach different things. The way he answered in terms of approach and everything, it sounded like the way we do things.

What have you noticed about ELIUD KIPCHOGE’S mindset? He said the past few months have been challenging and he was affected mentally going into Tokyo (he has since revealed he didn’t sleep for three days in the build-up due to death threats on him and his family after the death of KELVIN KIPTUM). Have you noticed him recalibrate since then? Considering what happened, and what was said, anybody would be in that position but nobody is always at the bottom. Because if things push you in life to the bottom, you always find a natural way of coming back. I’m hoping, and I’m seeing, that he’s formed a natural way of coming back.

You have trained ELIUD for over 20 years now. Is it different training him these days? When you train a racehorse, they are worked together with jockeys and, when they see the jockey coming, they know it’s time to work. But some run away from the jockeys. In the case of ELIUD, he is the easiest person to train. ELIUD knows why he is training, he knows this is the time for this, this is the time for that. He knows why he is doing it. He used to do it for different reasons but I think those reasons have expanded. When you are young you want to run and represent your country. I don’t know any athlete that wants to be an athlete that does not dream one day of representing their country. When you move from that level and come to the world of commercials – the business world – you realise besides this vest, the national colours, there are opportunities, incentives out there. From there you go to another level, you see the sport, you can influence people. You see the way he is changing as he is becoming older. He is thinking about legacy. Without those incentives, then we will just stop our careers

He is going for his third Olympic gold in a row. If he were to achieve that, where would it rank in his achievements? To me, my prayers are that he wins. When he gets there and he wins, I think we have different ways of interpreting it. I remember the (1:59) challenge, if you look what happened in the curriculum in some schools, it had a lot of impact. If he gets there, to me what is more important is that we will see longevity in a different perspective. We will see different possibilities as people, people who love sport, even the scientists would want to know, is it the mind only or is it the body?

ELIUD says that his marathon training blocks don’t change and won’t change for the Paris marathon course, which is hillier than any of the major marathon courses. I’m not sure I believe that. In essence the overall concept of what you want to achieve in endurance, in speed endurance, in strength, remain almost the same because those are the fundamentals. I think that is what he is talking about. The fundamentals don’t change but the timings and when you accept certain fundamentals change because of the nature of the programme you are trying to achieve.

Can you tell us about your new assistant – former Olympic and world steeplechase champion BRIMIN KIPRUTO? Did you coach him? From high school and for his entire running career, from identification to retirement. He has developed an interest to go into coaching. We are looking at different opportunities. So far we sent him to Ghana to train in sports management and administration. It’s one step towards the right direction. I’m not young any more. We need people. Besides BRIMIN we have another world champion [2001 World Cross Country short race champion ENOCH KOECH. We also have Augustine Choge, who was Commonwealth 5000m champion. We are looking at training them to be good administrators and good coaches.

The iconic sports venue of Crystal Palace celebrates its 60th anniversary this week with an event for the public on Saturday (July 13) from 9am to 7.30pm which will include the opening of the refurbished track at 11am. It will feature exhibitions showcasing historic sporting moments to panel discussions exploring the architectural heritage. There are also live performances, interactive sports zones and a chance to try out a range of sports and activities and meet celebrity guests. In addition there is an England Athletics young athletes’ funetics activation zone plus live music, food and a screening of the women’s tennis final at Wimbledon.

After falling into disrepair in recent years, last year saw the promise of “once in a generation redevelopment” of the venue. There have been big fears that the centre would simply be demolished and as recently as November 2022 parts of the centre were closed due to fears over concrete pillars underneath floodlights. There have been a few false dawns too where promising plans have come to nothing.

The south London venue held the AAA Championships from 1971-1987 and many still regard it as the spiritual home of British athletics. In 2014 the stadium was threatened with demolition. Although in 2015 UK Athletics called for the retention of the facilities, mainly so that the large number of athletes based in the south London area would have a good indoor and outdoor training track. Ben Woods, the person given the task of now leading the current redevelopment of the historic south London sports arena, told AW last year: “The early works are about getting a bit of life and belief back down at Crystal Palace. I understand the cynicism but ultimately the proof will be in the pudding.”

A revitalised Crystal Palace will eventually provide the sport with an alternative home to the London Stadium as the centrepiece for the sport in the capital.

FEMKE BOL SMASHES HER OWN EUROPEAN 400M HURDLES RECORD  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

The Dutch athlete clocks (50.95) at La Chaux-de-Fonds, which is the third quickest time in history. FEMKE BOL has sent quite the statement to SYDNEY MCLAUGHLIN-LEVRONE after smashing her own European 400m hurdles record. The 24-year-old Dutch athlete ran a staggering (50.95) at La Chaux-de-Fonds on Sunday (July 14), winning by over 50m to the rest of the field. BOL hasn’t just lowered her European record of (51.65) – set at last year’s London Diamond League – but also recorded the third quickest time in history. BOL is set to return to London for the 2024 event this coming Saturday (July 20) too. Only MCLAUGHLIN-LEVRONE, with her respective world records of (50.65) and (50.68), has gone quicker in the 400m hurdles. To put BOL’S time into perspective, it would also qualify her for the Olympics in the 400m flat. With MCLAUGHLIN-LEVRONE focusing on the 400m hurdles at the Games, it sets up a battle between two athletics superstars in Paris.

BOL has had an amazing season so far. At the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow, she claimed two golds in the 400m and 4x400m and set a world record over two laps indoors with (49.17). Then, at the European Championships in Rome, BOL struck gold in the 400m hurdles and 4x400m relay. In the mixed 4x400m, she anchored the Dutch team to a bronze medal, having been given too much ground to make up on the anchor leg. It’s the perfect preparation for the Olympics, where she aims to get that coveted gold medal. At Tokyo 2020, BOL finished third on the podium behind MCLAUGHLIN-LEVRONE and DAILILAH MUHAMMAD. Bol has now changed her stride pattern from 15 to 14 strides between some of the hurdles. Her coach Laurent Meuwly told AW, back in December, that “it’s about a 12cm difference in stride length”.

He added: “Progressively we pushed her stride a bit more and changed to having a more cruising way of running the first 200m, with longer strides. “And then to change after seven hurdles to go to 15 – that was something completely different to what she has been used to. But, very quickly, she realised in training that this was the direction to go in.” “I think she’s also able to perform over 800m. She showed in Boston that she has this efficiency, and she’s pretty good in all the endurance sessions because of it. I can imagine [the 800m] might also be an option.”

The women’s 400m hurdles heats at the Olympics is scheduled for August 4, the semi-finals on August 6 and the final on August 8.

EXPLORING THE WORLD OF ORIENTEERING  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

We navigate the sport of orienteering as the city of Edinburgh stages the World Championships For many, the term “orienteering” might bring back images of school trips, perhaps scouting adventures and navigating a way through soggy and dreary conditions. The reality of it can be very different, though, and it’s a sport with strong links to athletics. Orienteering has helped with the development of athletes like MEGAN KEITH, who recently secured her Olympic selection for Paris in the 10,000m. The European under-23 cross-country champion started out in orienteering and became part of Scottish and British squads, even clinching gold at the Junior European Championships five years ago. KRIS JONES, a British international on the track, in cross country and mountain running, was also a silver medallist in the Sprint Relay Event at the 2022 World Orienteering Championships.

The latest edition of the event takes place in Edinburgh this week (July 11-16) and I decided to explore the sport by joining two of Britain’s top athletes, KIRSTIN MAXWELL and MAIRI EADES, in a session of “sprint orienteering” through the famous city streets of the Scottish capital. The aim of the sport is to navigate between checkpoints marked on a special orienteering map. There is no set route so the skill, and fun, comes from trying to find the best way to go, with the ultimate goal being to complete the course in the quickest time. As someone who is used to the convenience of using my phone for navigation, the idea of relying on a traditional map-and-compass approach felt daunting. However, once I got into the swing of things – and learned to hold a map the correct way – the thrill of navigating from one checkpoint to the next quickly got me moving. Instead of fixating on the distance remaining, the focus shifted to the challenge of each leg of the journey.

While I may have faced a brief detour and didn’t finish in first place, the experience left me eager to go again. The unpredictable nature of the race and not knowing the whereabouts of other competitors, really does keep the adrenaline pumping. “I love the challenge, it’s not just running, it’s an extension to that,” says MAXWELL. “You have no idea where you are going or what you are going to see until you pick up the map. As you run faster you have to make the decisions really quickly.”

MAXWELL is no stranger to the world of athletics, having come from a running background and maintaining her competitive edge to this day. Based in Edinburgh, the GB athlete regularly participates in road races and cross country for Corstorphine AAC. “At the top level you do have to be a good runner,” she says. “If you already run it is a great alternative because you can still be competitive but in a slightly different way. “I think even when I retire I will still be doing it, because absolutely anybody can take part, there is no age or speed requirement.” Switching to orienteering doesn’t drastically change an athlete’s training programme. “We train as normal runners, we do interval training, cross country, track – we do a bit of everything,” says EADES. “There is already a bit of navigation involved when it comes to cross country and hill running so it would be great to see those runners do some orienteering as well.

“We are trying to break the stereotype that people have of orienteering, trudging around with massive backpacks in the rain and wind, we want to show them it’s not like that in the real sport. The head-to-head knockout racing is exciting for everyone to watch, as well as to participate in.” Great Britain finished second in the medal table at the last Sprint WOC in Denmark two years ago, and now the nation will be looking to go one better. One of the nation’s best hopes will be MEGAN CARTER-DAVIES, who is the reigning sprint world champion and is expected to defend her title in Edinburgh. The urban environment will present a distinct challenge to the competitors, though, as they tackle the tight passageways, steep slopes and narrow stairways. “I think the fact that the sport takes place in an open field of play is going to be really exciting for people to watch,” says ANDY MITCHELMORE, event director of WOC 2024. “You are not in a stadium or on a golf course – people can stand and watch athletes running across their doorstep.

“Different athletes will be following different routes, then there’s the jeopardy of who has taken the quickest course and you don’t know that until they get to the finish. It’s never like a half marathon where you might see one athlete a minute ahead in front and you know they are going to win.” For orienteering to grow as a sport, it needs greater visibility in top class events. A distant past argument is that it is not a spectator sport, but modern technology now destroys that notion.
