THE SECOND RE-UNION AT THE SHAFTESBURY TAVERN – Phil Cunningham sent me the following;
Last year a group of us meet at the Wrestler’s Pub where the first known picture of Shaftesbury Harriers was taken. This year we thought we would have another get together in the Shaftesbury Tavern in Hornsey. We will be meeting at 7pm on Wednesday 4 December 2024. The Shaftesbury Tavern is located on the corner of Shaftesbury Road and Hornsey Road. It would be great to see some of you there!

The Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers Centenary Year Book states: And so it came about that in 1890 a few lads, most of whom would have been about 16 years of age, assembled at Jubilee Hall and decided to form a running club and called it Shaftesbury Harriers. Jubilee Hall was then newly built and used for dances, concerts and such-like social events, and was over what was then called a coffee tavern. It stood at the corner of Hornsey Road and Fairbridge Road, not far from Hornsey Road railway station, and about a mile from Hampstead Heath.
It seems probable that, like others of the many clubs being formed about that time, the title came from a road in the district. Possibly some lads lived in Shaftesbury Road close by: with its tall Victorian houses the road has not changed so much with the passing years. The Shaftesbury Tavern is still on the corner.

A photo of our get together last year from left to right, RAY POWELL (49 years with the club), MARTIN GREY (56 years), TONY SUNDERLAND (69 years), PHIL CUNNINGHAM (50 years), JOHN DRYDEN (52 years), DAVE BEDFORD (59 years), PHIL RICHARDSON (63 years), JOHN KELLY (a mere 44 years) and JULIAN GOATER (57 years). GERALD ALTERMAN (43 years) and JO NEWELL also attended but unfortunately needed to leave before the photo. Well over 500 years of club membership between them!

REG BLACK – I have just heard that REG is extremely ill, our thoughts are with REG and his family. PAUL SIMONS visited REG earlier this week, at the Queenscourt Hospice, Southport PR8 8RE.
REG joined Shaftesbury towards the end of the 1980s, along with 2 of 3 of his army friends. He was one of our top veteran runners, and competed on a regular basis. During the early 1990s I took over as Veteran team manager, and REG was so supportive in getting many of our veterans to turn out.

SBH CLUB RECORDS FOR MASTERS MEN – Currently there were no records for the Master Men, therefore I have carried out an exercise on the Power of 10, to correct this. The records identified are from 2005 to 24 October 2024, and will be updated to the SBH website in the coming weeks.

SHAFTESBURY BARNET HARRIERS SUBSCRIPTIONS – Our new Club year started on 1 October 2023. The current SBH annual subscription is £80 and the current England Athletics annual registration from 1 April 2024 is £19. The current total is £99 and should be paid NOW to; ACCOUNT NAME: SHAFTESBURY BARNET HARRIERS, BANK: HSBC, ACCOUNT NUMBER: 41308378, SORT CODE: 400426 – Please advise GEOFF MORPHITIS by email (geoffrey.morphitis@capeandd.com) when payment has been made.

RESULTS
Just to clarify, that the results I publish can be different to those that are shown on the Power of 10. The differences relate to seasons and personal best performances. For example in the recent EYAL results, an athlete in the 200m ran (24.1), and on his profile his season’s best was shown as (23.88) indoors. As the 200m indoors and outdoors are totally different type of events, I had shown the (24.1) as a season’s best.
The Power of 10 publishes separate UK rankings for indoor and outdoor performances.

TEENAGE RUNNER PAIGE QUINN USES MUSICAL TALENT TO FUND SPORTING DREAM  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

The 15-year-old impressed after victory in the English National Cross Country Championships but is also making a name for herself as a singer and songwriter. PAIGE QUINN is quickly emerging as a talent to watch this winter after her under-15 victory in the English National Cross Country Championships in September. The 15-year-old’s abilities aren’t confined to sport, though. In addition to her running, QUINN is a budding musician. She writes and performs her own songs, which she shares on Spotify, while also busking in her hometown of Torbay to help fund her fledgling athletics career. After a challenging three-month injury hiatus over the summer, QUINN made a triumphant return to competition, clocking an impressive (16:31) at the Mid Cheshire 5km in late August, a time that ranks her second on the UK all-time list for under-15 girls. A remarkable parkrun, with (16:48) at the Torbay Velopark event, has also earned her the title of fastest-ever under-15 girl in parkrun history. She now has her sights on the European Cross Country Championships in Antalya this December, where she will aim to make her mark in the U20 category.

How did you first get into athletics? I used to play a lot of football with my sister. She played for a team but I wasn’t old enough at the time, so I just went along to training sessions with her. I wasn’t very good, but I was a bit of a nuisance just running up and down the pitch. My dad noticed my energy levels and how I wouldn’t stop running so he introduced me to parkruns and I started doing them regularly. After that he searched for a local athletics club and signed me up to Torbay AC at nine years old.

How did it feel to win the National Cross Country Championships? I really wasn’t expecting it because I was injured for a lot of the track season this year with a knee injury. I missed out on a lot of competitions such as the School Games and I didn’t get much training in, either. I think the nationals being rescheduled worked in my favour because I wasn’t ready to win it last year. I don’t really get out well on races, but I just went out trying to stick with the front pack and to overtake if I could. I was shocked when I got first place as I’m not used to leading a race, so it felt amazing going into that last stretch.

Did you expect to run a 16:31 PB in the 5km this year? After my injury I didn’t really have much time to train so I was just racing for fitness. I did about three track races in the same week and a few 5km road races. I wasn’t really happy with my performance on them. But it was amazing when I got (16:31). I wasn’t really expecting that, but I think it helped that I was in a race with a lot of athletes.

The first kilometre was around (3:05) and I couldn’t slow down. Due to the quick runners behind me, I would have been stampeded on. I didn’t know about the time until my dad let me know after I finished. I was shocked because I beat my personal best by about 20 seconds.

What are your other interests outside of running? I go busking sometimes in the summer to fund the costs of travelling for races and kit. I’ve written a few songs with my dad, and I have a few on Spotify which were produced by my friend TOM WARD. It was a hobby I started a few years ago and then I got competitive with running and realised how expensive it is so I thought busking could be a good idea. I started to learn guitar from there, and I taught myself on YouTube.

What are your next steps? I would like to get selected this year for the European Cross Country Championships as an under-20. Obviously, it will be a challenge because I am only in the under-17 age group [in the trials in Liverpool on November 23] but that would be amazing. I would also love to do well in the British Cross Challenge. I’d love to get some personal bests in the 1500m and 3000m next year on the track, too, if I’m not injured.

What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far? Listen to your body. With all the injuries I’ve had, I think I was so young and eager to please and impress people that I just ran through the pain. If I had a slight niggle, I would make it worse by running through it. I should have listened to my body, but I know that now.

INDIA TO HOST 2025 WORLD PARA ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

New Delhi will welcome the world’s best para-athletes next year, as India holds the championships for the first time. The 2025 World Para Athletics Championships will take place in New Delhi. The Indian capital will welcome the world’s best para-athletes to the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, which was the host venue for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. This comes after the Paralympic Committee of India formalised an agreement with World Para Athletics to bring the event to the country.

According to The Times of India, the championships are set to cost between £40-50m, with the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium receiving significant upgrades, including the installation of a new synthetic track that meets international standards. There is no official date for the championships yet but it’s most likely to take place in November.

“This will be the biggest sporting event in India for para athletes,” a PCI official told The Times of India. “It will be huge for them. More than 1000 para athletes around the world will come here to showcase their talent. Last year, we hosted the Para Shooting World Cup in New Delhi and it was a huge success.” The first ever World Para Athletics Championships took place in 1994 in Germany. World Para Athletics also announced Dubai, Cali, Tunis and Olomouc as the first confirmed Grand Prix of the 2025 season. The United Arab Emirates will once again host the opening event of the Grand Prix calendar from February 10-13. The Colombian and Tunisian meets will take place on May 16-19 and June 16-18 respectively, before the Czech city of Olomouc will hold the first-ever women’s only Grand Prix from July 3-5.

CAN YOU HELP PLEASE I would welcome any contributions From Yourselves, any impending marriages, or additions to the family, any running or competing incidents, also past warm weather training/holidays (No Club 24 please). Currently the response has been excellent, but if you have anything that could make it into next week’s Newsletter – please email me.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.
