SHAFTESBURY TOP CLUB IN ENGLAND – What a day to remember at the National Cross Country Championships which took place in Wollaton Park, Nottingham on 23 February. The Under 17 Men’s team of JAMAL LEWIS, JAMIE DEE, ROBBIE LIGHTOWLER and, GREG COOKE became National Champions winning by 70 points, and now hold the cross country and road relay National titles.

There were Individual Silver Medals from RICHARD GOODMAN who has been outstanding on the country and finished just 8 seconds off the winner, JAMIE HARPER U13 in his third National (7th last year) was only 11 seconds behind. JAMIE along with THOMAS PATRICK, HENRY FULTON and FINN HARVEY won a well-deserved Under 13 team Bronze Medals. The Under 20 Men’s team of MICHAEL CALLEGARI, LIAM DEE, BEN ROCHFORD and MARK PEARCE also won the team Bronze Medals. Finally the Under 15 Boys finished in 6th position.

Well done to you all, and especially to the Boys/Men’s teams whose results in the 5 Championships cemented our position as the Top Club currently in England. BETH WINS BRONZE MEDAL BETH POTTER U23 won the Bronze Medal (28.24) in the Scottish National Cross Country Championships in Falkirk. She was only 15 seconds behind the winner Rhona Auckland of Banchory Stonehaven (28.09).

CONGRATULATIONS STUART SINGER – Stuart V50 completed his challenge of running 6 Marathons in 12 months. He started in April 2013 in BOSTON (3:35.51) then LONDON (3:38.40), BERLIN (3:26.33), CHICAGO (3:27.00) and NEW YORK (3:36.58). The final leg took place in TOKYO on 23 February and finished in his fastest time of the 6 (3:23.01).

ORLANDO EDWARDS STARTS 2014 WITH A BANG – Orlando won the 45th edition of the Carnethy Five Hill Race. Vicious, freezing winds, insanely-steep terrain and a whole lot of heather-bashing Orlando reflects on his outstanding victory at one of the biggest off-road events in the UK.

The Carnethy Five Hill Race is one of my favourites. It’s relatively short at six miles but with five steep summits (a total of 762m of ascent) and a number of leg-buckling descents to tackle, the race is definitely a brutal one. It’s also the first real big race of the season and always attracts a large, strong field. This year was no different with 500 runners hitting the startline.

Carnethy is the highest of the Pentland hills, a range just outside Edinburgh, Scotland. Once again this year, a traditional piper played the bagpipes as we tore away from the start and raced at speed across the first field. Conditions were good – that is if you don’t mind contending with a sub-zero chill factor wind, icy cold bogs, knee-high heather and snowdrifts!

Things didn’t start well. I tumbled in the first bog of the day and lost ground on my rivals. I picked myself up and worked hard to get back to the front group. As we hit the bottom of the first climb (Scald Law), Tom Owens, and then my inov-8 teammate Rob Jebb took turns in the lead.

Running into a ferocious wind, it felt like we were being blown back down the hill. That, combined with the knee-high heather and snowdrifts, made it a gruelling first ascent.

Once over the summit, I took huge leaps on the descent to try and land on the bits of terrain not covered in snow. Orlando winning time was (51.21), 2nd was Finlay Wild (51.41) and 3rd was Tom Owens (52.41). Orlando’s team Hunters Bog Trotters won the team prize (1,8,20,29).

MATTHEW LALLY U17 WINS GOLD MEDAL – Matthew won the Essex & Eastern Counties High Jump Championships at Lee Valley, jumping a personal best Indoors (1.96m) adding 2cm to his 2013 jump, and is ranked UK No.3 U17 in 2014.

ST ALBANS SCHOOL UNBEATEN SEASON GOES ON – St Albans School with four Shaftesbury athletes (Legs 2, 4, 5 & 6) in the 6 man team won the King Henry VIII School annual cross country relays on 5 February for the 11th time. With boys and girls from over 60 schools across England, the race has a strong legacy, boasting former competitors of the calibre of Sebastian Coe, Alistair & Jonathan Brownlee, and Richard Nerurkar.

In high winds the course as set up as best could b, having to tie the tape to objects and allow it to wave, banner-like, rather than spanning it between posts as usual! Record-breaking rainfall over the UK had not missed Coventry, and the woods section particularly had some impressively deep and wide puddles to ford.  However the course overall was less muddy than in 2013, and fears of a slow course seemed to have been misplaced. The rain continued to fall all morning, as schools from as far afield as Kent, North Yorkshire and even the flood–hit Somerset all made their journeys to the War Memorial Park, where the event is held. It was fortunate that the rain stopped just as the race began, allowing the spectators and waiting competitors to watch in greater comfort.

St Albans won in a time of 74.38 – Leg 1 DANIEL MYERS (12.53), Leg 2 MARK PEARCE U20 (11.53) 3rd fastest time of the race, Leg 3 HARRISON PYRKE (12.49), Leg 4 ROBBIE LIGHTOWLER U20 (12.04), Leg 5 ADAM THORPE U20 (12.35), Leg 6 JOE REDWOOD U20 (12.24). Team result 1st St Albans School 74.38, 2nd The Judd School 75.33, 3rd Shrewsbury School 76.10
