2021/2022 COHORT OF FUTURE ACADEMY PROGRAMME ATHLETES ANNOUNCED – The following was published on the Athletics Weekly website this week.
British Athletics have announced that 26 athletes will begin their journey on the Olympic or Paralympic Futures Academy Programme for the 2021/2022 season, supported by Nike. The FAP is essentially a pathway for junior athletes to eventually transition onto the British Athletics’ World Class Programme, where they would be able to receive National Lottery funding. By being on the FAP, British Athletics have identified that athlete as having the potential to win medals at future Olympic and Paralympic Games. Recent graduates of the system include Olympic 800m silver medallist KEELY HODGKINSON and Paralympic T20 1500m champion OWEN MILLER. The Olympic Futures programme – for which 19 athletes have been offered membership – is split into three levels: Futures Academy, Futures Transition and Relay. In total, 61 athletes are on the FAP for the 2021/2022 season.
Congratulations to the following Shaftesbury athletes – Olympic Futures Transition – CHARLIE DOBSON (Coach BENKE BLOMKVIST) and Olympic Futures Academy – HENRY MCLUCKIE (Coach GEOFF WATKIN)
MEL WATMAN REMEMBERED – Many thanks to ROSALIND ZEFFERTT, former athletics correspondent for the Jewish Chronicle, who sent in an obituary of MEL WATMAN written by her predecessor BRIAN SACKS and published in the JC last Friday.
I am sure you already know of MEL, who edited Athletics Weekly for many years and was a renowned sports journalist, known to all at the highest levels of UK athletics. He reported on every Olympics from Rome in 1960 right through to Tokyo this past summer. He edited the magazine from 1968 to 1984 but his contributions ranged from 1953 until close to the present day. Mel passed away in September.
The photograph shows MEL (centre) with SBH member RICHARD GOODMAN on the right and Barnet & District V80 vet ROGER BRUCK.
Incidentally, several of our members are past winners of the DANIEL SACKS Awards mentioned by BRIAN in the article: GILAD NACHSHEN, DINA SILVERMAN, JESSICA HURLEY, BINI BLOOM, EMMA TAYLOR, DAVID STONE, LIA RADUS, MAAYAN RADUS, SAM GREENSTEIN, JAYDEN KLEIN, JACK DAVIS-BLACK, PETER BAYVEL-ZAYATS and OR SEGAL.
PROFILE ON CATHERINE MURPHY – CATHERINE joined Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers in 1989 and won her first national titles in 1990, winning the AAA U15 60m and 200m indoors, 200m outdoors and the English Schools 200m (25.0). She also won the 1993 English Schools 200m (23.72w).
She defeated club-mate SIMMONE JACOBS to win the 1995 AAA Championships 200m title in 23.40 secs, which qualified her for the 4 × 100 m relay at the 1995 World Championships in Gothenburg. The relay team finished the preliminary round in ninth place; eighth place would have qualified them for the finals.
Catherine has a degree in law from Brunel University and also competed in the 1995 Universiade in Fukuoka, Japan.
She finished fourth in the 200m final at the 1996 and 2000 AAA Championships/Olympic trials.
In 2001, CATHERINE became the first woman in history to win the 200m/400m double in the same year at the AAA Indoor Championships winning in Welsh record times of 23.35 and 52.31. The 200m record still stands (as of 2018). CATHERINE decided to focus on the 400m for the World Indoor Championships in Lisbon, finishing fourth in her semi-final. She went on to be a member of the British quartet that finished fifth in the 4 × 400m relay at the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton. In the 400m she was third in her heat but did not advance to the semi-finals.
At the 2002 European Indoor Championships she finished in sixth place.
She set her 400m personal best (51.36) in the semi-final of the 2002 Commonwealth Games. She hoped to medal but finished sixth in the final.
CATHERINE improved her Welsh indoor 400m record to 51.74 secs in the semi-finals of the 2003 World Indoor Championships, a record that stood until SEREN BUNDY-DAVIES ran 51.72 in 2016. CATHERINE ran 51.99 for fourth in the final.
CATHERINE was named to compete for the relay team in July 2004 at the 2004 Olympic Games, she again finished fourth in the 4 × 400m relay, along with DONNA FRASER, CHRISTINE OHURUOGU and LEE MCCONNELL. The team advanced to the finals with a time of 3:26.99 in their heat. In the finals they ran 3:25.12, finishing fourth. In 2010, CRYSTAL COX, a member of the gold-medal US relay team, admitted to doping. In March 2010, the IAAF released a statement: “According to the IAAF Competition Rules in effect in 2004, the US relay team results will be disqualified accordingly.” The statement prompted the chairman of UK Athletics to send a letter to Great Britain’s relay team, congratulating them on their now bronze-medal finish. In the end, the IAAF stripped COX of her gold medal but did not reallocate any other medals, so CATHERINE’S team kept their fourth place finish.
In 2005, she won a bronze medal as part of the 4 × 400m relay at the European Indoor Championships.
CATHERINE competed in the 400m at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, making the semi-final. A month after the competition, CATHERINE
CATHERINE currently holds the following Club’s records – Under 17 60m indoors (7.68) set in 1992 – Under 20 200m indoors (24.4) set in 1993 and outdoors 200m (23.72) set in 1993 – Senior Women indoor 200m (23.35) set in 2001 and 400m (51.75) set in 2003.
CATHERINE has made a two-fold welcome return to SBH. Not only has her 10 year-old son BENJAMIN BAMISAIYE joined the Club but also, CATHERINE herself has joined the SBH Club Council where her knowledge and experience will be of great value.
NATIONAL ATHLETICS LEAGUE – END OF TERM REPORT – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
The new National Athletics League saw its first staging this summer, albeit not quite in the format that was intended. So how did it fare? It was to be the biggest shake-up in league athletics in more than 40 years but, due to the pandemic, the first season of the National Athletics League turned out to be an interim measure with a revised format. So how much can be read into the events of the first year? We asked some key figures in the league for their assessment so far of the new format.
The NAL replaced both the men’s British Athletics League and UK Women’s League, which had been set up in 1969 and 1975 respectively. However, the outbreak of Covid delayed its launch in 2020 and, as the country was gripped by the 2021 lockdown, the committee decided an improvised format was needed if it was to take place at all this summer. Having the same four or five geographically based teams compete against each over all four rounds and using performance points to have clubs “virtually” compete against each other was obviously far from ideal. However, the emphasis was on providing athletes with much-needed competition after the pandemic-induced pause. What did go ahead as planned was the uniting of the male and female athletes and this seems to have proved a great success. Shot putter AMELIA STRICKLER, who competed three times for eventual champions Thames Valley Harriers, said: “This year I actually really liked it as a combined team for sure. I think it makes the team atmosphere so much better. “Whereas, before, it was like we didn’t really care how the men did, now it’s like ‘Oh my gosh, we need them to do really well too’. It reminds me of being at uni and you have that team atmosphere, it’s really fun.” However, putting on the new competition has posed challenges. In order to limit travel and overnight stays which might have been prevented by restrictions, each of the four rounds required nine matches rather than four.
League chairman LEN STEERS said: “The delivery of the Covid competition format for the NAL has proved difficult. We can’t disguise that fact. Providing 36 competitions over the whole year has been a task in itself. “It’s only by means of the volunteers within the sport that it’s been possible so we have to say big thanks to those clubs who have taken on responsibilities to host fixtures, those individuals who have put themselves forward to be event managers, along with the officials who have turned up in quite significant numbers, particularly when as a sport this year, due to the pandemic, we condensed five months into three months so there have been major fixture clashes.” Indeed, finding enough officials amid a crowded calendar was a major feat, particularly as some were vulnerable in the face of Covid or shielding. The pandemic also meant some tracks were being used as testing or vaccinating centres, thus limiting the available venues. The provision of match-day results was also problematic with the temporary league structure. “We look forward to the return of the eight-team format and a return to position-based scoring,” said Steers. However, he particularly thanked England Athletics for their support – financial and otherwise. “Without the support of EA we wouldn’t be able to provide the 36 fixtures in three months,” he said.
TIM HUGHES, committee member and Bournemouth AC team manager, noted a tailing off in the athlete appearance level throughout the season, perhaps a sport-wide issue this year. “I would say my biggest negative and not just for this league – it’s all over the leagues in 2021 and not just our team – was the reduced participation this year,” he said. The introduction of promotion and relegation in 2022 will clearly have an effect in this regard. However, champions TVH had no problem filling all their team slots, successfully calling on top athletes such as STRICKLER, NICOLE KENDALL, ZOEY CLARK and the league’s male track athlete of the year, CHRIS MCALISTER. He said: “Hopefully people saw that they didn’t necessarily have to go chasing competitions abroad if they can get a good level of competition here.”
Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers Olympian SCOTT LINCOLN was another such elite athlete who competed for his club, his (20m) throw making him the league’s male field athlete of the year. Meanwhile, Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow’s hurdler JESSIE KNIGHT returned from Tokyo 2020 to claim the female track athlete award with her (54.81) at Eton. The provision of competition after the ravaged 2020 season was appreciated at all levels. GRAHAM HOWELL, team manager of National One winners Yate, said: “Most people were just glad there was something to do. Structurally it was organised quite well.”
However, next year should see the long-awaited arrival of the originally planned format. Three divisions – in the case of the premiership and championship each having 16 teams – will be contested. Eight clubs will meet each match on a round-robin basis in each of three rounds before two grand finales for both the premiership and championship at Bedford. As is traditional, scoring will also be based on positions rather than performance. Guests will be allowed, too, meaning appearances of athletes such as KEELY HODGKINSON, who guested at Nottingham (pictured above) after winning Olympic 800m silver, could become more commonplace. This will also offer a good opportunity for athletes to gain standards ahead of championships. The league this year may have been a shadow of its eventual self but the signs are promising.
