HOW THIS 77-YEAR-OLD WOMAN CONQUERED 602 MARATHONS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Exclusive interview with GINA LITTLE, who recently became the oldest person to run all six major marathons, to run one marathon is an achievement but try 602 of them. That is the astonishing amount that 77-year-old GINA LITTLE has completed and she isn’t stopping anytime soon. Inspired by the 1982 London Marathon – the second edition of the event – going past her house in Woolwich, she took up running at the age of 37 and completed her first ever race over 26.2 miles. After running the 2022 Chicago Marathon, LITTLE has now finished all of the six major marathons and is the oldest person to ever complete the feat. She first did London in 1983; New York in 1987; Berlin in 1988; Boston in 1996; Tokyo in 2010 and has now rounded it off with Chicago this year. The numbers behind the longevity are out of this world. No British woman has completed the London Marathon on more occasions (38), she has taken part in marathons in 46 countries and has a personal best over the distance of 3:26:21. Her 100th marathon took place in 1999, 500th in 2014 and 600th at the 2022 Berlin Marathon.

Over the last month, LITTLE took on Berlin, London and Chicago. Her times were (4:33), (4:53) and (4:36) – a sign of consistency and that she still has fire in the belly. Three marathons in nearly as many weeks was a challenge, even for someone who has completed so many. “Never in a million years would I have thought I could [do over 600 marathons],” she tells AW. “I’ve just got so much out of running. I’ve seen the world and I’ve met so many nice people over the years. I think this probably happens in most sports. It’s just been amazing. “I didn’t realise how crazy it was until it actually happened. You just keep plodding along but I now realise how amazing it actually is. I’ve got so much publicity! “I was a bit worried as I hadn’t done three [marathons] on the trot for a long while. The one I suffered the most was London, in the middle, and in Chicago I was up on my toes. The people at half-way in Chicago couldn’t believe how I was [doing]. “In Chicago the ground was awful and the road was bad. I tripped a few times. The time just went. I obviously looked at my watch but not to that extent. I get to 13 miles and I think ‘oh, I’m half-way now’ and I when I got to 17 miles I thought I’m in single figures now.”

LITTLE’S appetite for the longer distances is made easier by her frame. She is 5ft tall and weighs just over seven stone, making it easier to be light on her feet during races. The 77-year-old has been a member of Plumstead Runners for 30 years, nearly as old as its 35-year existence, and regularly runs with the club. When Little reached 600 marathons in Berlin last month, she received honorary lifetime membership for the race. Over a dozen members from the club went out to the German capital to mark the historic occasion and celebrated with a night of champagne. “I must be one of the longest serving members now,” Little says. “The people that were there before me aren’t there anymore. The club have been so good. “When I did my 500th marathon the club hired a bus. This year my 600th marathon should’ve been at Richmond [Runfest] and they hired a coach and we all had t-shirts. Unfortunately, because of The Queen’s death they cancelled the event.”

Over the decades at the club, LITTLE has been known for her marathon running. And not just one a week. “I sometimes did two marathons over a weekend,” she adds. “I remember going to Northern Ireland and we did six marathons in six days in six different counties. That was quite hard and it was with different people every time. “People at my running club are faster than me and I didn’t want to be dragged around so I just do my own thing. I just thought well, ‘if I could do 13 miles then I could get through the rest of it’. “I’m still doing good times and I’m not hurting so I’m thinking ‘why should I pack up?’ I’m just going to keep going. My doctors are amazed, not that I go there very often, and they know all about me.” Her mindset hasn’t wavered. Get to 13 miles and just continue on. The fact that LITTLE has done marathons on a regular basis has replaced the need for consistent training. She does half marathons as a warm-up, a taster for the bigger distance, if you like. During our interview, she reminiscences about two marathons that catch the eye in particular. One was in St Petersburg where LITTLE had to rush to the toilet, only to find out that she had to pay in roubles to use it. One slight problem is that marathon runners do not carry cash of course. So she had to ask a member of the public for money.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. The day started with our Under 11 Boys, in which BEN KASPAR started his season with an outstanding win, DENNYS PASCAL finished 3rd, with the remaining three JOSIAH ALDHAM, TAHA COCKERELL and PRINCE-MOSES JOHN finished 9th, 11th and 12th respectively. Which meant the team won with 156 points, with Victoria Park & Tower Hamlets some 31 points behind.

Next the Under 11 Girls race, the team was led home by SIENNA DARCY finishing 9th, 3rd 9 year-old, with the remaining three LUCIA WANG, ELFIE SHAW and GRACE ROONEY finished 13th, 19th and 23rd respectively. Which meant the team fully deserved their 2nd place with 104 points, behind Woodford Green & Essex Ladies with 110 points.

The Under 13 Boys, started the race with 7 runners, in which CALEB HILTON finished with an excellent 3rd place, EDDIE PASCAL finished 8th, JESSE ABRAHAMS 11th and LADDIE SHAW 15th, with the remaining three ZACK JOSEPHS, SAM DARCY and AARON YACOBI finished 24th, 31st and 47th respectively. The team won with 159 points, the same total as Woodford Green & Essex Ladies, as LADDIE finished 15th to WG&EL 16th position, we were awarded the win.

The Under 13 Girls race, we had a good turnout of 5 runners, led home by MEI HAYAKAWA finishing 9th, with the remaining four AMBER JACKSON, JUI HAYAKAWA, VERA DOUDKO and ELIZA LEIBOWITZ finishing 23rd, 24th, 32nd and 47th respectively.  The team finished in 4th place with 127 points, with Trent Park winning with 170 points. The team has the potential of moving up to the top three, over the coming fixtures.

The Under 15 Boys/Under 17 Men showed they meant business, with ARTHUR and EUAN PHILLIPS finishing 3rd and 7th in the Under 15 age-group and JARED MORRIS 9th in the Under 15 age-group. The remaining four were Under 17 DANIEL BANYARD, JAI DARYANANI, TOMMY NARVAEZ-WHITE and GUY FAWCETT finishing 31st, 37th, 38th and 39th respectively. The team finished in 3rd place with 243 points, with Woodford Green & Essex Ladies winning with 279 points. The team have the opportunity of making up ground over the coming fixtures, Herts Phoenix finished 2nd 9 points in front of us.

The Under 15 Girls/Under 17 Women has been one of our strongest age-groups over the past seasons, but last year the numbers running decreased dramatically. This year POSIE SHAW moved up as an Under 15, and her final season as an Under 13 she finished 2nd, 1st and 1st in the final 3 races, this time she finished 4th Under 15. ELIZABETH DA TERESA finished 39th and PHOEBE MUSIC 47th. The team finished in 10th place, and we need at least 3 more runners over the coming fixtures, to move us up the table.

The Senior Men had 10 runners toe the line, first home was MAX WINFIELD finishing 29th – 5th U20), followed by MARK COTTLE 113th and LUKE FLATLEY 145th (31.53) with FINN MACCARTHY finishing 148th – 17th U20.  The remaining 6 were mainly the Old Uns (sorry lads) TIM BUTLER V55 223rd, JOEL PHILLIPS V45 227th, PAUL MACCARTHY V55 229th, DAVID GREENSTEIN V55 235th, DANNY DIGWEED 260th and BARRY HAWS V50 283rd. The team, who were now in Division 2 finished in a respectable 5th place, so it is not beyond our capability of pulling back the deficit. So, it is action stations at the next fixture at Wormwood Scrubs on 12 November. The Veteran Men’s team finished in 6th place, but were not too many points of the 3rd place.

The Senior Women’s tales of woe carry on, first home was JO KENT V55 (2nd Claim) 39th – 2nd V55 running for Barnet, and ABI GREENE U20 finished in 87th place. The team finished in 9th place.

There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. SOUTHERN CLUBS TAKE SENIOR TITLES AT SUTTON PARK  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. This is a section taken from the article.
Autumnal sunshine and mild weather greeted the clubs from the three areas to the home of English road relay running on Saturday 8 October. The senior titles at these English Road Running Association (ERRA) Autumn Relays went to Aldershot (Men) and Tonbridge (Women) as the South of England also provided the fastest laps in both races.

Selection for the men’s event was again based on the first 25 clubs in each of the areas with the official South of England championship and the alternative Aldershot relays being awarded eight slots each, with the balance being decided on the following teams’ merits. In the event, all of the extra slots went to clubs from the non-official race. This meant that there were just six from the official Southern championship race and 22 from the alternative Rushmoor event taking the chance to race here.

A NEW EXPERIENCE  LESLIE ODAMTTEN-ADDY has been a member of Shaftesbury since 2006, aged 18. He has competed for the club from 60m up to 800m, plus a couple of Parkruns.
I have just received an email saying he had just competed a road race, thinking maybe a 5km, but no the “Berlin Marathon”. This is his story;

This was my first attempt at competing the marathon distance and the prestige of doing so in such a historic city and event certainly did not disappoint! I was fortunate to receive an entry place mid-August and overall preparations went well. Race Plan…enjoy and have fun (and if I’m lucky enough run a fast time).

The Race – 0 to 10km (39.19) The atmosphere at the start line was electric. The crowd and announcers were all cheering for ELUID KIPCHOGE to hopefully produce a special performance. I think we all fed off the positive energy and there was a sense of camaraderie amongst the runners; that perhaps we were going to be part of something special. The energy boost helped as I went through even 5k splits (19mins).
10 to 20km (1:21.02) Despite the quick pace I felt comfortable and worked my way through the field and all pace sections.
Half Way (1:25.56) Just another 21km to go.
Half Way to 30km (2:11.14) Reached a good target crossing 30km. On track for a sub 3hour finish.
30km to 40km (3:20.59) It was this point I realised something was wrong L . I had sharp pains through my quad muscle, and it became difficult to flex my knee. I tried to use the energy of the crowd and will power but alas the pain became so severe that I had to walk/jog the remaining marathon distance.
42km Finish (3:36.20) The aim was to try and finish in one piece. The sense of relief and elation was mixed but certainly happy to compete my first marathon.

Bittersweet but the experience was special, especially the adulations from the crowds and all the volunteers. I’m on the road to recovery…one ultrasound and MRI later…i have a treatment plan in place. See you at the start line soon.

THE BIRMINGHAM CREW  Currently we have athletes at either Birmingham or Loughborough University. Recently a social evening was held at Birmingham, with theme “Club Vests”. As you can see from the photograph, they certainly looked pretty sharp. From left to right JOSH WOODS, LILY HOLT, TRINITY O’CONNOR, CRAIG MONCUR and EVAN CAMPBELL.

LLOYD COWAN BURSARY OPEN FOR COACHES AND YOUNG ATLETES  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
Former SBH member LLOYD COWAN passed away on 11 January 2021, of Covid-19 at the relatively young age of 58. He unfortunately had underlying medical issues having recently suffered a stroke. LLOYD competed for us in the BAL in the mid-90’s. He set a club record for the 110m Hurdles with (13.75) in 1994 which is still 3rd on the SBH all-time list. He then moved up to 400m Hurdles and in 1995 ran (50.79) for 6th on the current SBH all-time list. LLOYD had his greatest success in coaching CHRISTINE OHURUOGU to Olympic Gold and countless other medals in International Championships.

Grants of up to £500 will be awarded to athletics coaches and to unfunded athletes with potential, aged between 16 and 23, for whom cost is a barrier to accessing developmental opportunities in athletics. The application window closes 23:59 on October 13. The selection process will take place the following week when the Grants Committee will meet to consider every submission. Decisions will be confirmed by the end of October. Sixty percent of UK-wide applicants received grants in the first edition of the award in 2021. European under-18 medallists TENDAI NYABADZA [1500m], REBECCA GRIEVE [Girls Medley Relay] and under-17 indoor 60mH British record-holder JAIDEN DEAN were among the first athlete recipients. GWENNAN LEWIS and ANITA RICHARDSON, who guides under-20 talent Success Eduan, were two of the coaches to receive awards. View the LLOYD COWAN Bursary guidance and application forms for athletes and coaches here.

The Lloyd Cowan Bursary was set up in memory of LLOYD COWAN MBE, who believed that no one with sporting potential should be held back by lack of support and opportunities. The Bursary awards grants of up to £500 once a year, both to qualified coaches and to unfunded athletes, aged 16-23, for whom cost is a barrier to accessing developmental opportunities in athletics.  LLOYD was an international athlete before hanging up his spikes and becoming one of the UK’s most successful coaches. He guided many leading British sprinters, including World, Olympic and Commonwealth 400m champion CHRISTINE OHURUOGU and European 110m hurdles champion ANDY TURNER. Tragically LLOYD died in January 2021, aged 58, after contracting COVID-19.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

BIG PLANS FOR MINI LONDON MARATHONS FUTURE  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph taken at the start by MARK SHEARMAN.

Young athletes on Saturday will receive £10 each for school equipment and maybe even a medal from ELIUD KIPCHOGE as organisers hope to build entries to a whopping 50,000 by 2030. For years, the Mini London Marathon has been one of the best-kept secrets in British sport. Taking place early in the morning on the main London Marathon race day, it is often overshadowed by the big event and receives minimal coverage in comparison to the elite athlete and charity-fundraising exploits of the runners tackling 26.2 miles. This could change this weekend, though, as the race switches to Saturday 1 October. It means not only will the youngsters enjoy the spotlight to themselves 24 hours before the ‘main marathon’ takes place but they will receive their medals from ELIUD KIPCHOGE, who will be in London this weekend as a Mini Marathon ambassador six days after breaking the world marathon record in Berlin. Around 7000 young runners are set to take part on Saturday. Coincidentally this is the same number of people who registered to run the first-ever London Marathon in 1981.

London Marathon race director HUGH BRASHER believes the main London Marathon can accommodate 50,000 runners in 2023 or 2024 and his ambitious goal is for the Mini London Marathon to feature the same number of entries in eight years’ time when London celebrates its 50th anniversary. Saturday’s races will feature the usual battle between nationwide regional teams and teams from London Boroughs but there will also be a mass participation element with distances ranging from one mile to 2.6km with races ending on The Mall. In addition, thousands more are completing a virtual Mini London Marathon at schools around the UK. BRASHER believes it is also the only running event in the world where every child is paid to participate, as each entrant will receive £10 paid to their school to spend on sports or computer equipment courtesy of the sponsor Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). If plans to increase participation numbers to 50,000 by 2030 come off, it means schools in the UK could benefit from £500,000. As part of its renewed deal with London Marathon, BBC says it will cover the event as well.

Train strikes on Saturday are threatening to spoil the fun but both Mini Marathoners and runners trying to get to London for Sunday’s main race. But BRASHER says most regional teams will travel to the venue by coach, whereas athletes representing London Boroughs are in the capital anyway and will be able to get the Tube or DLR.Ben Dijkstra (Mark Shearman)

Last year’s winners included JESS BAILEY and the Irish middle-distance prodigy NICK GRIGGS. But participants over the years read like a who’s who of British endurance sport with MO FARAH having raced in it several times, plus wheelchair racers DAVID WEIR and SHELLY WOODS, triathletes ALISTAIR and JONNY BROWNLEE, ALEX YEE and NON STANFORD, together with current track stars like LAURA MUIR, EILISH MCCOLGAN, KEELY HODGKINSON, JAKE WIGHTMAN and JOSH KERR. Even one of the England football Lionesses who is starting Sunday’s event, JILL SCOTT, is a former winner of the Mini London Marathon back in 2001. “We have incredible heritage in this event,” says BRASHER. “We now believe it is singularly the most important thing since my father and JOHN DISLEY started the event in 1981.”Mini London Marathon. BRASHER added: “Our children are in crisis, with shocking statistics showing falling activity levels, increasing childhood obesity and mental health issues. We all know how getting active can improve physical and mental health and London Marathon Events is working with a range of partners to inspire children across the UK to get more active.”

THE LIDDIARD TROPHY HISTORY  The following article featured on the Queen’s Park Harriers website. This years takes place on Saturday 5 November at Fryent Country Park in Kingsbury.
The Liddiard Trophy is a prestigious and historic cross country fixture hosted annually by Queen’s Park Harriers at Fryent Country Park in Kingsbury. Clubs from all over London compete for the famous prize which commemorates Mr E.J. Liddiard (pictured right), the longest-surviving founder member of the club. He was one of a group of pupils at St Jude’s Institute who decided to create a sports club involving athletics and football among other activities (The footballers, incidentally, would end up breaking away and merging with Christ Church Rangers to form the modern-day Queen’s Park Rangers). He was with the club up until his death in 1946. In his honour, the Hoops held the inaugural Liddiard Trophy meet in 1947. The race was won by Shaftesbury Harriers (later becoming Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers). This club which would go on to have a storied history with the event, winning it several times in the 1970s and 1980s, fielding teams littered with internationals. At its height, the meet attracted around 300 competitors.

The race With eight to score and three individuals allowed per team, the Liddiard is a team event which has arguably one of the most eye-catching prizes in UK athletics, a solid silver depiction of a runner, complete in casing. The trophy has been awarded to the winning team since the race’s inception, with the victors able to take the prize home for the year.

The people While victory is the goal for some, the race itself is a reminder of the selflessness of the running community.  Take Cecil Gittins, a man who joined Queen’s Park Harriers in the same year of Liddiard’s death, 1946. Up until his passing a few of years ago, he was still an active member of club, attending committee meetings and keeping the Hoops moving along. And if you plan to be around on race day, be sure to look out for Peter Hunt, another Liddiard contemporary, who helped to rescue Queen’s Park Harriers from folding essentially on his own in the early 1970s. Still a member, Peter comes down every year from his current home in South Wales to oversee the Liddiard to ensure its smooth running.

CHALLENGING PARISIAN OLYMPIC MARATHON ROUTE REVEALED  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
Don’t expect fast times on the Olympic course in the French capital, with over a thousand feet of elevation on 26.2 mile route. The marathon course for the Paris Olympics in 2024 has been revealed and it will be one of the toughest courses in recent memory. The 26.2 mile journey starts at Hotel de Ville and ends at Les Invalides, taking in sites such as the Eiffel Tower, The Louvre and Versailles. Athletes will be tested with the highest point of the course reaching 600ft at the 20.3km mark. The total elevation from start to finish is a staggering 1584ft. The course has been inspired by “la marche des femmes” (the Women’s March on Versailles), when in 1789 thousands of women walked from the Paris City Hall to Versailles to put pressure on King Louis XVI to establish constitutional rights for French citizens. Due to the march, he subsequently ratified the Universal Declaration of Rights of Man and of the Citizen, just months after the French Revolution. The men’s and women’s marathons will take place on August 10 and 11, 2024, the last two days of the next Olympics. It will be the first time that the women’s marathon is held on the final day of the Games.

“The athletes, the thousands of spectators and millions of television viewers will experience a special line-up of iconic sites, from France’s capital to Versailles, through the emblematic landscapes of Ile-de-France,” said Head of the Paris Organising Committee TONY ESTANGUET. “In this exceptional setting, the athletes will also take on a sporting challenge of unprecedented difficulty thanks to a tough course with significant climbs.” “Beyond a doubt, the Paris 2024 marathon will have something special about it,” said double Olympic marathon champion and world record-holder ELIUD KIPCHOGE. “To perform in such an impressive setting, in a place so charged with history and symbolism, will be a unique experience. I could not ask for a more perfect race for the Games.”

Over 40,000 members of the public will be given the opportunity to run the entire course, plus a 10km stretch, after the Games. “With its unprecedented course, the Paris 2024 Marathon represents great sporting challenge for the athletes, in a spectacular setting,” said former women’s world record-holder PAULA RADCLIFFE.
