NEW CLUB RECORD – Congratulations to HENRY DOVER U20 on his astonishing 3000m time at the BMC Grand Prix in Loughborough on 22 June. His time of (7:57.47) took 15.99 seconds off his 11 May time, which ranked UK No.2 U20 in 2024, and UK No.7 on the all-time list. The previous record was held by one of Shaftbury’s all-time athlete JULIAN GOATER, who ran (8:06.0) in Hamosand Sweden on 2 July 1972. To take 8.53 seconds off JULIAN’S time is awesome, and the future of Shaftesbury’s middle distance performances looks in good hands with HENRY.

NEW CLUB RECORD – Congratulations to RENEE REGIS U20 who ran a superb ran a seasons best (11.43 w-0.4) in the 100m Semi-Final at the UK Championships in Manchester on 29 June. RENEE missed making the Final by the closest of margins, in a photo finish with NIA WEDDERBURN-GOODISON. RENEE took .08 of a second off her own Club Record (11.51 w-0.2) set in Eton on 8 June 2024.
This puts RENEE in pole position to make the GB&NI team, for the World U20 Championships in Lima, Peru in August.

LONDON INTER CLUB CHALLENGE – Due to have taken place on Saturday 13 July, has been Cancelled. For the avoidance of doubt, the main reasons include: Issues surrounding photofinish, and the fixture clashes arising from our choice of date, resulting in a shortage of officials.

RESULTS
Just to clarify, that the results I publish can be different to those that are shown on the Power of 10. The differences relate to seasons and personal best performances. For example in the recent EYAL results, an athlete in the 200m ran (24.1), and on his profile his season’s best was shown as (23.88) indoors. As the 200m indoors and outdoors are totally different type of events, I had shown the (24.1) as a season’s best.
The Power of 10 publishes separate UK rankings for indoor and outdoor performances.

NICK PERCY IN THE FORM OF HIS LIFE – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph taken by MARK SHEARMAN.

KATY BARDEN speaks to a discus thrower who enjoyed a brilliant performance on America’s field of dreams recently. A beautiful photo captures the sunset over Millican Field in Ramona, Oklahoma. As the last rays of sun fade over the horizon, there is a striking image of a lone throws circle, its bright concrete contrasting against the vast, dark space that surrounds it. The emptiness is captivating.

By day, the venue casts a different spell. Its magic attracts the world’s best throwers. “What is it [about the place]?” NICK PERCY asked fellow thrower ALEX ROSE in 2023, intrigued by what he’d heard. “It has great conditions”, the Samoan replied, “but it’s just such an amazing atmosphere with everyone wanting everyone else to throw far”. Ramona is Throw Town (USA), a real-life field of dreams. “That’s why I wanted to go out there,” explains Scottish record-holder PERCY, who threw a lifetime best and European and Olympic qualifying standard of (67.73m) at the venue in April. “It’s a love project [from DON MILLICAN and coach CALEB SEAL. These guys purchased a plot of land in a rural area, built a lovely facility, then said: ‘Come and throw’.”

Glasgow-born, Isle of Wight-based PERCY, a five-time British champion and 2016 NCAA discus champion, made his Great Britain and Northern Ireland senior debut at the London 2017 World Championships. In 2022, he represented GB & NI at the World and European Championships and finished fifth for Scotland at the Commonwealth Games. That same year he threw (65m), his best at the time, before a back injury caused him to miss the majority of the winter. His form and fitness started to return through summer 2023 – he managed a season’s best of (64.73m) – but not soon enough to make it to the World Championships in Budapest. That experience, and the prospect of making his first Olympics, convinced him to go “all in” for 2024.

His (67.73m), the second-furthest throw of all time by a British athlete, came on his first day of competition at the Oklahoma Throws Series. Alongside the joy, however, came a typically mixed reception ranging from shock and surprise to downright indignation. Perhaps the context and a greater awareness of PERCY’S consistent efforts would have helped placate those naysayers. In fact, throughout a month of competition, the 29-year-old threw multiple times over (63.80m) and delivered four throws in excess of his previous best. “Everything sounds windier on the audio,” he laughs, responding to those who suggest his performance was purely down to favourable conditions.

PERCY’S fourth-best ever performance (65.37m) came in a memorable discus competition one week later as Lithuania’s MYKOLAS ALEKNA threw an incredible (74.35m) to break the world record at the Oklahoma Throws Series World Invitational. “I threw (65.37m) and came ninth,” he says, with almost disbelief. “It’s nuts to think that would make the final in a World Champs and in any normal competition you’d be battling for a medal. I think we had around 200 people in attendance that day. We were so happy for everyone to throw far and that’s the magic of that field, it’s such a positive environment. “I drove MYKOLAS s back to the airport the next day,” he adds. “I went from one of my best throws ever to being a taxi driver to the world record-holder. How humbling is that? There’s a lot you can learn from those guys, but sometimes you learn more not by asking questions, but by observing, by watching what they do, how they prepare, how they act, how they can handle these things.”

WORLD’S FIRST SMART TRACK UNDER DEVELOPMENT – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Sports technology company Feldspar is working on creating the ‘world’s first sensor-enabled running track’. The athletes of the (near) future are poised to benefit from a track that captures data from their footsteps using sensors. Feldspar, a UK-based sports technology company, say their work is well underway to create a smart running surface which will help athletes train by feeding them AI-driven real-time data in addition to giving fans the kind of insights and analytics that have never been available before. Unlike the data available in running watches, the tracking and motion sensors on the track mean the stats will be sourced from under the athletes’ feet. In combination with cameras to help capture information on stride, speed and other metrics, Feldspar believe this kind of biomechanical analysis will help athletes reduce injuries and train more effectively.

Feldspar claim: “This pioneering innovation represents the first major technological advancement in track and field running in nearly 60 years, laying the foundation for an unparalleled new immersive experience in live sports.” The company, which is backed by Hong Kong investors, plans to start building and testing its first prototype of the high-performance running track later this year before entering into full production in 2025. They add: “This technology has the potential to revolutionise the spectator experience at live sports events as well as to attract new enthusiasts who value innovative, visually captivating, and tech-driven premier sports entertainment.”

ALVINA CHEN, a former athlete who is founder and CEO of Feldspar, said: “While we have seen a high level of innovation in running shoes, apparel, and training methods in recent years,  it’s incredible that the modern synthetic running track itself has remained largely unchanged since the 1968 Summer Olympics. “There is a huge opportunity in revolutionising this sport. By digitising the running track Feldspar is not only providing new avenues for athletes’ development and pushing the boundaries of human performance but also moving athletics towards a new era of exhilarating, high-energy live international events, similar to what we see in other sports, like football and motorsports.”

She added: “Our ambition with our next generation running track is to set a new benchmark for athlete performance and fan engagement for future world competitions, including the Olympic Games and beyond.” Feldspar also suggest their early versions of the track are likely to be “modular and lightweight”, making them easy to transport and assemble. “We envisage locations prominent for hosting international sports events UAE, UK, or US,” they say. Of course the promotional images so far just show a sprint straight, too, but Feldspar say they have ambitions one day to see their product used on a 400m circuit. “However, our priority is to focus on building and testing the performance prototype first,” they say.

 SHAFTESBURY BARNET HARRIERS ON INSTAGRAM – Since the account was setup, there has been an amazing amount of Videos and Photographs contributed with many comments. There are 3 posts this week.

The first 2 photographs feature ALANNAH FASHANU and KRISHAWN AIKEN after receiving ther National Athletic League Athlete of the Year award for 2023,  they received their awards from GEOFF MORPHITIS.

The final photograph shows RENEE REGIS U20 in the recent UK Championships, in which she finished 3rd in the Senior Women’s 100 semi-final with a seasons best (11.43 w-0.4) taking .08 of a second off her heat time, and is ranked UK No.3 U20 in 2024, and a new club record. RENEE recorded the same time as the 2nd place athlete, and just failed to qualify for the final, following a review of the photo finsh picture.

CODES OF CONDUCT – SBH have now adopted the UK Athletics (UKA) and the Home Country Athletics Federations (HCAF) Codes of Conduct which set out national standards of conduct for all clubs, coaches, officials, volunteers and athletes in the sport.  The purpose of the codes are to clarify what behaviours are acceptable and unacceptable, the standards of practice expected and the basis for challenging and improving practice.  The Codes are similar to our previous Codes of Conduct which were part of the previous ClubMark scheme.  All club member and anyone undertaking a relevant role must agree to abide by the codes of conduct. The Codes of Conduct have now been put onto our Website, please read these to understand the commitments you are making by being a member of SBH.

ACCESS TO SBH CLUBHOUSE – The new Keyholders to the outside door are TY HOLDEN, CLYDE GORDON, NEVILLE THOMPSON, GREG THOMPSON, COLIN GODFREY and YAMILLE ALDAMA who all use the Clubhouse outside of normal stadium opening hours. GEOFF MORPHITIS and DAVE BEDFORD will also have a key. All other key fob holders can continue to gain access to the clubhouse via the (New) West Stand Entrance and the Trackside Door to the Clubhouse.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION – Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

SBH MIDWEEK POLE VAULT CLUB AT STONEX STADIUM – The current arrangements until further notice are that Pole Vault training is on Monday’s and Wednesday’s from 18.30pm to 21.00pm.
