BRITAIN WIN 50 EUROPEAN MASTER GOLDS IN TORUN, POLAND INCLUDING FIVE FOR CLAIRE ELMS – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Britain won a half century of gold and 165 medals at the championships which featured a full range of indoor events starting at the M35s and all the way up to the M95s plus winter throws and a cross- country and marathon.

The most successful UK athlete in terms of golds was W60 record-setter CLARE ELMS who was the only athlete in Torun to win the 800m, 1500m, 3000m and cross-country quadruple and had the Euro Masters had a 10km and half-marathon like the World Masters and not a marathon, then she probably would have attempted even more. The day after her 1500m win, she was competing for her club Kent AC in the area road relays in Milton Keynes.

Mother of four girls, NIA RUTTER, who has appeared in Gladiators in the past, won two golds and seven medals to be the most bemedalled Brit overall. In terms of records this time, the most successful Briton was HELEN GODSELL, who set a W70 world mark at 200m and an European record at 60m. IRIE HILL improved her own world mark in the W55 pole vault while M55 Darren Scott at 200m and W70 Caroline Powell at 400m, set European records.

The biggest name there was DWAIN CHAMBERS who won the M45 at a canter in his first masters championships and the former world indoor champion says he will be back for more. Given his past misdemeanour, some believe he shouldn’t be getting the attention, but his presence was welcomed by the athletes and his races were the best attended and it gave a buzz to an event that otherwise would have been largely ignored by the media.

Britain’s most successful event though was the hurdles with seven victories including four successive golds for the men.

The Poles had a few recent internationals competing and with home advantage and filling almost every event they won 102 golds and 250 medals though Germany got 261 medals and 94 golds. Spain were unusually the third most successful nation with 56 golds but Britain won 37 more medals than the Spaniards.

KOJO KYEREME WINS A GOLD AND SILVER IN TORUN, POLAND – KOJO sent me an update on his excellent performances in Torun. Firstly on the 20 March the M45 800m took place, with KOJO drawn in Heat 2 and finished 2nd (2:10.96i),the Final took place the next day and was a close race with RAMON GONZALEZ of Spain taking the Gold medal (2:01.87i) with KOJO taking the Silver medal (2:02.48i).

The M45 1500m heats took place on the 22 March with KOJO drawn in Heat 2 and finished 4th (SB 4:25.89i), the Final took place the next day, with KOJO looking refreshed, he ran an excellent race and took the Gold medal (SB 4:04.01i) taking 21.88 seconds off his H2 time, and is ranked UK No.1 V45 in 2024, getting revenge on GONZALEZ who finished 3rd (4:06.59i).

MOWA TO MAKE ITS MARK AT BANNISTER MILE EVENT – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph taken from the MOWA museum.

The Museum of World Athletics is creating a display of magnificent mile-related memorabilia in Oxford on May 6, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the first sub-four-minute mile will feature a number of vintage items thanks to the Museum of World Athletics (MOWA) and the global governing body’s Heritage department. There will be a display at Iffley Road in Oxford from Saturday May 4 to Monday May 6 and it will include…

In total the 17 athletes above include seven Olympic and five world 1500m champions and seven world mile record-breakers, the first man to go sub-3.30 for the 1500m, the first men to go sub-4 in the mile indoors and outdoors, the first woman inside five minutes, the current outdoor world record-holders for both the men’s and women’s miles, the women’s indoor 1500m record-holder, and four runners, each world indoor mile record-breakers, who have between them won 20 Wanamaker Mile titles. The Bannister Miles event on May 6 will see a mass community mile on the roads plus a series of BMC races on Monday afternoon. You can find out more here.

This follows the recent Museum of World Athletics event in Glasgow city centre earlier this month where, among other things, COE announced the awarding of a World Athletics Heritage Plaque in the posthumous category of ‘Legend’ to ‘The Flying Scotsman’ ERIC LIDDELL. The presentation of the plaque took place in front of an invited audience of 150 guests that included 1980 Olympic 100m champion ALLAN WELLS and 2000 Olympic heptathlon champion DENISE LEWIS, who earlier in the ceremony had made donations of historic clothing and shoes from their competition careers to the Museum of World Athletics.

MALAYSIA REJECTS CHANCE TO HOST 2026 COMMONWEALTH GAMES – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently. Photograph taken by MARK SHEARMAN.

The Asian country last hosted Games in 1998 and was offered £100m to host the 2026 edition. Malaysia has rejected the opportunity to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games, meaning that it could be cancelled for the first time since World War Two. The Malaysian government was offered £100m by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) but that was regarded as “insufficient” and the time frame was also too short. Malaysia’s sports ministry said the offer “would not cover the overall cost of hosting a large-scale sports event”. Malaysian government spokesperson FAHMI FADZIL added: “If we had a longer time, we would definitely do it, but because there’s such a short time, we definitely can’t do it. “When we assessed the viability of hosting the Games, the length of time needed and the cost was seen to be particularly prohibitive.”

The Australian state of Victoria was the initial host of the 2026 Games but pulled out last summer due to rising costs. Gold Coast, which hosted the Games back in 2018, then stepped in but they themselves withdrew last December, citing the same issues.

With five out of the past six editions having been held in either the UK or Australia, a change of scenery would’ve been a welcome sight for organisers, who will now just hope to keep the Games alive. That’s because the Canadian province of Alberta – the initial host for 2030 – also backed out last year, with 2030 being the 100th anniversary of the Games. It means the Commonwealth Games doesn’t have a host for either 2026 or 2030 and questions will now be asked if Birmingham 2022 will end up being the last ever edition. Over 5000 athletes from 72 nations competed at Birmingham 2022, almost all of which are former territories of the British Empire.

CODES OF CONDUCT – SBH have now adopted the UK Athletics (UKA) and the Home Country Athletics Federations (HCAF) Codes of Conduct which set out national standards of conduct for all clubs, coaches, officials, volunteers and athletes in the sport. The purpose of the codes are to clarify what behaviours are acceptable and unacceptable, the standards of practice expected and the basis for challenging and improving practice. The Codes are similar to our previous Codes of Conduct which were part of the previous ClubMark scheme. ACCESS TO SBH CLUBHOUSE – The new Keyholders to the outside door are TY HOLDEN, CLYDE GORDON, NEVILLE THOMPSON, GREG THOMPSON, COLIN GODFREY and YAMILLE ALDAMA who all use the Clubhouse outside of normal stadium opening hours. GEOFF MORPHITIS and DAVE BEDFORD will also have a key. All other key fob holders can continue to gain access to the clubhouse via the (New) West Stand Entrance and the Trackside Door to the Clubhouse.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION – Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

SBH MIDWEEK JUMPS CLUB AT STONEX STADIUM – The current arrangements until further notice are that Pole Vault training is on Monday’s and Wednesday’s from 18.30pm to 21.00pm. High Jump training is on Wednesday’s from 18.45pm to 21.00pm.

NEW INDOOR CLUB RECORD – Congratulations to ROSALIND ZEFFERTT who at the Middlesex Championships at Lee Valley, broke 2 and equalled 1 of her own Women’s 60-64 club records.
There were 2 records on 16 March – 200m (35.20i) previous record was (35.80i) at Lee Valley on 5 March, Pole Vault (2.40mi) which equalled her height at Lee Valley on 5 March. The final record was on 17 March in the 60m (9.95i) previous record was (9.96i) at Lee Valley on 21 January.

HERTFORDSHIRE AND MIDDLESEX INDOOR CHAMPIONPIONSHIPS – Took place last Saturday and Sunday at Lee Valley, which was Lee Valley awash with black and white vests on both days. Our numbers competing must have been close to our best championships to date, with many of our recent new members were competing for the first time.
The results were outstanding, with 6 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze Medal in the Hertfordshire Championships, and with 10 Gold, 10 Silver and 7 Bronze Medal in the Middlesex Championships.

LONDON INTER CLUB CHALLENGE THROWSFEST WEEK 1 – Takes place on Saturday 30 March at the StoneX Stadium, Greenlands Lane, Hendon (Satnav NW4 1RL).
Entry fee is £12 per event for all age-groups, which includes 6 throws. SBH Members qualify for a 50% discount.
Events are Discus, Shot, Hammer & Javelin.

NORTH WEST LONDON LEAGUE – The final fixture of the season took place at Brent Valley Park on 2 March.
Brian is in the process of completing the analysis of all athletes who have taken part in this season along with team league final positions.

NEWHAM SUMMER OUTDOOR MEETINGS – Will take place on Sunday, these are the 2024 dates – 26 May, 23 June, 12 July (which is a Friday!), 18 August and 8 or 9 September.
Takes place at the London Marathon Community Track, Marshgate Lane, London (Satnav E20 8ST)

WATFORD OPEN MEETINGS – Currently take place on Wednesday evenings, these are the 2024 dates – 3 April, 17 April, 1 May, 15 May, 29 May, 12 June, 26 June, 10 July, 24 July, 7 August, 21 August and 4 September.

HENRY DOVER – Congratulations to HENRY who has selected for the GB&NI Under 20 Men’s team, for the World Cross Country Championships in Belgrade, Serbia on 20 March.
In last December’s European Cross Country Championships in Brussels, HENRY finished in 6th place in the Under 20 race, and the GB&NI team won the Silver Medal, 2 points behind Ireland.

RESULTS
NORTH WEST LONDON LEAGUE – The final fixture of the season took place at Brent Valley Park on 2 March.
The fixture, hosted by Ealing Eagles Running Club had the athletes running through some challenging mud and pools of water as a result of the deluge of rain that fell early on Saturday morning on to ground already very wet. The Eagles rose to the challenge and with some last minute changes to the course the runners were skirted around the deepest of the ponds that had formed. This was a first ever cross country event in the park and I think it was enjoyed by all.
Many thanks to Brian Fowler and his team in organising the 59th season of the NWLL.

Brian is in the process of completing the analysis of all athletes who have taken part in this season along with team league final positions.

There were top 5 finishes from Under 11 Boys DENNYS PASCAL 1st, WILLIAM STOCKDALE 2nd and ARI RUBENSTEIN 5th, Under 11 Girls GRACE ROONEY 2nd and SIENNA DARCY 5th, Under 17 Men AIDEN MACAVOY 3rd.

OXFORD CELEBRATES 70TH ANNIVERSARY OF BANNISTERS SUB-FOUR WITH FESTIVAL OF MILING – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

May 6 will see a community mass mile in Oxford city centre together with BMC races at Iffley Road and much more. On May 6 in 1954, a 25-year-old medical student called ROGER BANNISTER created arguably the most iconic moment in the history of athletics. Racing at Iffley Road athletics track in Oxford and helped by training partners and pacemakers CHRIS CHATAWAY and CHRIS BRASHER, he collapsed over the finish line hoping to have made history. After a tense wait the announcer said: “The result of the one mile… time… three…” The rest of the words were drowned out by the cheers of the watching crowd as Bannister became the first man to break four minutes. It had beautiful synchrony with four laps of one minute. It was also considered impossible by many. But BANNISTER ran (3:59.4) to enter athletics immortality. Over the years there have been several memorable celebrations of the anniversary. Sadly BANNISTER himself died in 2018, though, so he will not be here for the 70th anniversary, which takes place in less than two months’ time on Monday May 6.

There were tentative plans last year to stage a celebratory event in Loughborough, but the East Midlands university got wind of the considerable efforts by Oxford University and the British Milers’ Club to stage an event in Oxford, so they stepped aside and, now, Oxford has announced its exciting plans. Oxford University Athletic Club (OUAC) and the University of Oxford, supported by Oxfordshire County Council, will host a celebration of the life and legacy of BANNISTER with a community mass mile through the centre of the city and an international track meeting. Starting at 9am, waves of runners in the community mile will leave St Aldate’s in the centre of the city before running down Oxford’s High Street before finishing on Iffley Road, where they will collect their finisher’s medal on the track itself.

The community mile is open to participants of all ages and abilities with World Athletics sponsoring waves for local schoolchildren as part of the governing body’s Global Kids’ Athletics Day, while thousands of people from Oxford and beyond are invited to join in a common celebration of community, sport, and physical activity. With entries limited, participants are encouraged to sign up and secure a place in this historic event. Tickets are available here.

Later that day, athletes from across the country will compete in a series of track races organised by OUAC and the BMC, supported by England Athletics. The races will include heats for athletes aged nine and over, as well as para-athletes and competitive club runners from around 2.30pm to 6pm.

Finally – and precisely 70 years after BANNISTER set off – the meet will conclude with men’s and women’s elite miles, where a new generation of athletes will test their limits under the watchful eye of past mile world record holders. Tickets available here.

Spectators are welcome at Iffley Road Track throughout the day, with food and drink stalls, a pop-up World Athletics museum, plus health and fitness groups. In the late afternoon, there will also be a presentation of World Athletics Heritage Plaques in recognition of Bannister’s achievement and the contribution of OUAC – which is 164 years old – to the development of athletics. Tickets will be available free-of-charge, with advance registration recommended here.

These celebrations build on a series of university initiatives designed to open its sports facilities to the wider community, particularly local schoolchildren. Last autumn, pupils from Greyfriars School spent one day per week participating in sport and attending engaging academic talks. An expanded scheme will offer a similar programme to more East Oxford schools this summer. Also this summer, work will begin on a state-of-the-art renovation of Iffley Road Track following a substantial investment by the University. University of Oxford’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor IRENE TRACEY, said: “I grew up with a love of sport and remain a keen runner, committed to the transformative benefits of sport. Breaking the four-minute mile barrier has endured as a defining achievement in sporting history. The Bannister Miles will be a fitting way to mark this legacy, achieved at the University 70 years ago, and the Bannister Community Mile through the streets of Oxford will be a fitting way to celebrate together with our community ROGER’S landmark achievement.”

THURSTAN BANNISTER, Sir ROGER’S younger son, said: “After retiring from competitive athletics, my father continually encouraged elite athletes and amateur runners of all ages, partly in his role as the first chairman of the Sports Council (now Sport England). The track and community miles will be exciting to watch, and I am sure many runners will find them so inspiring, they will shatter their PRs and other records.”

WHY THE BOARDLESS LONG JUMP IDEA HAS STRUGGLED TO TAKE OFF – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Latest on World Athletics’ controversial rule change proposals, plus the parkrun stats squabble, ultra runners in the Dragons’ Den and why Jakob Ingebrigtsen’s rivalry with Josh Kerr is tame compared to the 1980s.

One of the most interesting events at the World Indoor Championships did not take place in the Emirates Arena but a couple of miles away instead at a Coaches’ Club get-together on St Vincent Street in Glasgow city centre. Superbly organised by former British athletics coaching supremo FRANK DICK and supported by World Athletics, the final afternoon included a presentation on the controversial long jump proposals. JAKOB LARSEN and FLORIAN WEBER took to the stage to explain the background to the ideas followed by an interview with JON RIDGEON, the World Athletics chief executive who inadvertently broke the news about plans for a “boardless long jump” during a podcast earlier this year.

Listening to World Athletics’ side of the story in more detail, it was impossible not to have sympathy for them. The idea has been lambasted but is in a very early testing phase and has to clear several hurdles before it will be introduced at major international events in 2026 at the earliest. It’s one of four long jump innovations that World Athletics is looking at. Also, there is no guarantee it will even be introduced. In other words, it’s not the fait accompli that many assume it is. RIDGEON said World Athletics had a duty to look at potential changes because data tells them that certain events are struggling to maintain their appeal in an increasingly competitive sporting world. Current long jump rules, he added, were invented well over a century ago when there was no television or social media, not to mention the kind of hi-tech equipment that has the ability to revolutionise the sport if we make smart use of it. Of course the ideas aren’t particularly new. According to myth and legend, JESSE OWENS jumped further than nine metres in the 1930s when the need to hit a take-off board was removed. In addition, there is a chapter devoted to “the boardless long and triple jump” in the brilliant 1993 book The Future of Track & Field by masters athlete and Stanford professor ALPHONSE JUILLAND.

Following current world No.1 Miltos Tentoglou’s widely publicised criticism of the ideas, though, in addition to four-time Olympic long jump champion CARL LEWIS’S fierce comments on social media, there were some voices of discontent at the Coaches’ Club event itself. Coaching giants YANNICK TREGARO and CHARLES VAN COMMENEE asked some challenging questions, although DICK defended World Athletics’ efforts by encouraging his fellow coaches to have an open mind and not to kill an idea “when it’s a baby”.

TREGARO and VAN COMMENEE were not the only coaches in the room, but it was a relatively sparsely attended event. To be fair, additional viewers were able to tune into the conference via Zoom and the final session of the World Indoor Championships was set to begin around an hour after the long jump presentation. Still, it’s a shame LARSEN, WEBER and RIDGEON had such a small audience. Herein lies a problem. On one hand World Athletics claims it is keen to undergo a rigorous ‘consultation’ process with transparent communication of their ideas to change the sport. Yet on the flipside, RIDGEON admits his podcast comments on the new rules slipped out and that the wider athletics community accidentally heard about the ideas “too soon”. What’s more, LARSEN, WEBER and RIDGEON clearly put a lot of time and effort into preaching to a limited number of people at this Coaches’ Club event. So it’s a shame the event was not more widely available on YouTube, for example. As a curious spectator and long-time AW writer attending the event, I was also discouraged from reporting on any of the information shown on the presentation slides and my request for a copy of the video recording of the session was politely rejected. “The session was to inform/exchange with coaches onsite only,” I was told, “with the recording for internal use”. All of which is a pity as I would have enjoyed writing a more detailed article on these interesting and much-talked about proposals.

INNES FITZGERALD IN WORLD CROSS U-TURN – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

European under-20 champion makes dramatic decision to travel to Belgrade for global champs on March 30 as she joins ABBIE DONNELLY, JESS WARNER-JUDD and WILL BARNICOAT in GB team.

When INNES FITZGERALD won the under-20 women’s race at the Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships and World Trials in Nottingham last Saturday, she had little intention of racing at the World Cross Country Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, on March 30. But after weighing up the travel options she has now decided make the long journey, probably via a number of trains, from her home in Devon in south-west England to the Balkans of south-east Europe.

“In the lead-up to the Inter-Counties, Innes did not think she would be doing the World Cross,” her coach GAVIN PAVEY told AW. “But she’s since decided the travel is do-able.” It means the 17-year-old distance runner will take on the might of east Africa after winning the European title in style in Brussels in December. She finished fourth in the Euro Cross in Turin 15 months ago but that was after a gruelling journey to Italy on the Eurostar and trains where she had little sleep. FITZGERALD’S eco-friendly stance on travel is well-publicised and she turned down a GB vest for the World Cross Country Championships in Australia last year because she could not justify to herself doing a long-haul flight.

OLYMPIC GAMES 2024 – Take place in Paris from the 26 July until the 11 August. The Athletics take place from the 1 August until the 11 August.

NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS CANCELLED – This was the message we received from JOHN TEMPERTON of the English Cross Country Association last Friday 23 February.

The ECCA very much regret to announce that despite every effort possible being made, we are unable to hold the National Championships at Weston Park on Saturday. Thursday saw torrential rain for many hours, and much of the Park including parking areas are underwater. Falling on already saturated ground, this made conditions impossible for parking. We have spent the last 24 hours exploring every possible alternative, but we have not been able to solve the parking issues.
We will now explore all possible options, to hold our Championships at a suitable future date. We sincerely apologise for all the logistical and financial problems that this will cause to Clubs and individuals. Further announcements will be made as soon as we can do so with any certainty.

NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS TO BE RE-SCHEDULED – The following was posted on the ECCA website on Monday 26 February.

Following many meetings with various interests, The ECCA is now able to update you on the future plans for the 2024 National Championships. We have rescheduled the 2024 Championships at Weston Park during September (the exact date will be issued within a week from now). We recognise the importance of holding an annual Championships so have taken the decision to break with tradition and use a September date.
Details will be published as soon as possible, but we will be using age groups as per the 2023/2024 cross country season. So existing age groups will be used in September.

SBH 2023-2024 CROSS COUNTRY POINTS CHAMPIONSHIPS – Following the above re-scheduling of the National XC Championships, we have taken the decision that the final points totals will be based on the 10 February Metropolitan League results.

The Under 11 Boys and Girls final winners were published in the 15 February SBH Weekly Newsletter.

The Under 13 to Veteran Men and Women results are now based on the best 5 out of 6 results. Just to explain that some athletes have only completed 4 races. Therefore based on the National entries, the age-groups Under 13 to Under 20 winners as shown on the 10 February tables could not have been caught or overtaken. The only age-group that is not the case is the Under 17 Men, but as ADAM O’GORMAN was entered for the National, it would have been his 5th counting race, in which he would have ended up as the winner.

NORTH WEST LONDON LEAGUE – The fifth fixture of five takes place this Saturday 2 March at Brent Country Park, Hanwell, West London (SatNav W7 3BP).
You may wish to Google Hanwell Zoo for an overview of the area and the location of the park. The approach roads in the Greenford area are mostly within the London 20 mph zone so beware of being zapped by cameras.
The course will be on paths within Brent Valley Park, close to Hanwell Zoo.
The first races will be at 12 noon and at the conclusion of the final event the season awards will be presented.

2024 TRACK AND FIELD FIXTURES – The 2024 Summer Fixture Card is almost complete, and will be issued in 2-3 week’s time.
The season will be hectic from April to July, as this year sees the Olympic Games taking part in Paris, France from 26 July to 11 August, with the athletics starting on 1 August until 11 August.

NEXT GENERATION TRY OUT KIDS’ ATHLETICS AHEAD OF WORLD INDOORS – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

On the eve of the major championships in Glasgow, the global governing body’s young athlete initiative takes place in the city. With only a week to go until the start of the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow, local school children have been given a unique opportunity to take part in a fun festival of athletics. For some it meant getting their first taste of the No.1 Olympic sport, too. Kids’ Athletics is a free and exciting programme created by World Athletics to get children and young people across the world moving. The programme uses the power of athletics to inspire children and young people, wherever they are, to be more active, develop their skills and confidence, and to connect with the sport for life. The Kids’ Athletics day took place at Haghill Primary School, only a stone’s throw away from Glasgow’s Emirates Arena where world champions will be crowned. The day offered local children the chance to immerse themselves in the sport, participating in a series of adapted athletics events to develop core skills, including the standing long jump, speed bounds, seated ball throw and group relay challenges.

The pupils were given a score card to record their own efforts, the focus being on the individual and their only competition is with themselves. Bringing together 190 children aged 8-10, six local schools (Haghill Primary School, Alexandra Parade Primary School, Golfhill Primary School, Carntyne Primary School, Barmulloch Primary School, St Denise Primary School) are involved in the programme, with the aim of creating pathways into the sport through collaboration with local community driven initiatives. One such local initiative is the Dennistoun Community Sports Club (DCSH), which works in association with Glasgow Life and sportscotland to support the community and increase engagement in sport and physical activity. Already involved with renowned local athletics club – Shettleston Harriers, the DACSH aims to offer a pathway to young individuals into sport and it is hoped this event will help to uncover some of Scotland’s new athletics stars, following in the footsteps of local icons LAURA MUIR, JEMMA REEKIE and JOSH KERR.

Former Scottish track and field star and event ambassador, EILIDH DOYLE, said: “Athletics has such a varied range of running, jumping and throwing events, as well as being the core skills of so many other sports, it really does offer something for everyone. It is great seeing all these youngsters getting the opportunity to have a go today and more importantly being connected with people and places where they can continue to develop their interest in the sport. “Athletics is about having fun and it has been great to see all the smiley faces here today, cheered on by the event mascot Scottee, who was having his own warm-up for the championships!”

PAAVO NURMI’S MEDALS RETURNING TO PARIS – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently

Five golds won by “The Flying Finn” in 1924 to form part of new exhibition in French capital. The last time the summer Olympics were staged in Paris, back in 1924, PAAVO NURMI was one of the standout performers. As he created history by winning no fewer than five gold medals in a single Games, he was dubbed as “The Flying Finn”, “The Phantom Finn” or “The Finnish Running Marvel”. Now, 100 years on from his incredible feats of athleticism, NURMI’S medals are returning to the French capital for the first time since he was awarded them for winning the 1500m, 5000m, the 3000m team event and two cross-country events in a remarkable four-day spell.

In the 1920s, the Finn was known across the world for his middle and long distance running abilities, filling arenas wherever he went. Paris 1924 established his enduring legend, with his five victories remaining the most athletics gold medals ever won by one athlete at a single Games.

Nurmi’s medals will go on display in the museum of the Monnaie de Paris on the left bank of the Seine and form part of a larger exhibition of Olympic medals. “D’or, d’argent, de bronze. Une histoire de la médaille Olympique”, organised by the museum of the French mint to mark the Olympic Games of Paris 2024, offers a fascinating exploration of the history of the Olympic medal, highlighting its evolution through the editions of the modern Olympic Games. The exhibition opens to the public from March 27 and will run until September 22. “World Athletics is delighted that the family of PAAVO NURMI, the PAAVO NURMI Games, the City of Turku and the museum of the Monnaie de Paris have partnered with our own Museum of World Athletics to return one of the most famous sets of Olympic medals to the French capital for the first time since they were won there a century ago,” said World Athletics President SEB COE. “During the year of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, we are celebrating the outstanding achievements of The Flying Finn PAAVO NURMI who in 1924 won a still unsurpassed haul of five Olympic Athletics gold medals in a single edition of the Games. “As famous as the Hollywood stars of his day, lauded by US presidents, NURMI was the first truly global sports star.
