Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers Weekly Newsletter Thursday 4 December 2014

Happy Birthday this week to Andre Beswick, Linda Fogg, John Kelly, Samuel Morris, Nonso Okolo, Nick Percy, Ross Sambrook, Nick Smith, Daniel Watts, Glen Watts

GEORGE HARRISON MBE – On the 26 November George received his MBE at Buckingham Palace from Prince William. George told me he was wearing his ‘Muckle Flugga’ tie (which is a small rocky island north of Unst in the Shetland Islands) which has an athlete on it. Prince William knew of this and commented on it, George then explained the history. The year is 1977 and Maureen Smith of Highgate Harriers was chatting with George regarding 16 athletes from the Shetland Islands who were bringing a baton from Unst to Buckingham Palace to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s Silver Jubilee. George and Maureen then organised that the runners came via Watford, and that they would then proceed to Buckingham Palace. It took them 16 days to reach Watford, the Mayor of Watford saw them off and the baton was received by Lord Mountbatten at Buckingham Palace. SBH members old and current also took part and included David Lightowler and brother Phillip, Mark Seabrook, Paul Gurr and George’s son Colin. Photograph attached of George with his MBE, also the MBE Medal.
