WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2017 KIT CARRIERSKATIE ALCOCK who managed our very successful London 2012 team, has volunteered to run our kit carrier team at London 2017. The IAAF World Championships and World Para Athletics Championships only happen every two years and for them both to be held in London after the UK hosting both the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games is not only history-making but exciting for the sport and for those who live, study and work in London.

England Athletics will be working alongside the Local Organising Committee (London 2017 Ltd) for both Championships, to recruit teams of Kit Carriers. This offers the opportunity for approximately 180 young people to experience being part of the Championships and for some to get a taste of volunteering for the first time. Teams will have the opportunity to volunteer for either one or both Championships. The role of Kit Carrier is invaluable for ensuring that athletes can feel safe in the knowledge that their belongings will be looked after, allowing them to concentrate on the task of being competitive and trust that they will be able to access their belongings after they have competed.

Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers have been invited to apply to bring a team of 16-18yrs olds, who will carry out the role of Kit Carriers for all competing athletes. Each team will require 10 young athletes’ and 2 supervisors. Please find more information in relation to this opportunity by clicking here http://www.londonathletics.org/kit-carriers-2017

If you’re interested in volunteering as part of the SBH team, please email KATIE ALCOCK at katie_alcock87@hotmail.co.uk now to let her know your availability as she will be managing the application process. Timelines: Deadline for applications – 5 February 2017 – 12 Midnight, Outcome: April 2017, Completion of team member profile – End of May 2017, Induction including ‘run through’ of duties – June/July 2017 – Good luck!

JUNIOR PARKRUN – Saracens Sport Foundation are looking for a group of adult volunteers that can help create the first ever junior parkrun in Barnet. We need dedicated people who would like to give a couple of hours of their time on a Sunday morning every week to set up and deliver the junior parkrun event. By being part of this project you will be helping to encourage the next generation to take part in regular running. We’re looking for volunteers who will be advocates for the event, who can help promote this great regular 2km running programme (participants to be aged 4-14 years) within their local communities in Barnet.
Event organiser – Joining a partnership of staff and volunteers delivering this new programme, you’ll be the event organisers on the ground on a weekly basis.
Event volunteers – Meeting youngsters and families in the morning before the event, helping marshal the course (2km) and helping people get their times at the end.
Admin volunteers – We also need 1-2 volunteers that would be happy to spend an additional hour a week uploading the results of the weekly run to the parkrun system.

If you’re interested in getting involved, please contact Emily Neilan emilyneilan@saracens.net

NORTH WEST LONDON LEAGUE – Information on the fourth fixture of five which takes place on Saturday 18 February at Hampstead Heath Extension.
The race courses are all within an area known as Hampstead Heath Extension, off Hampstead Way.   This area has not previously been used for cross country running although it is not far distant from the much loved and often used Parliament Hill Fields. The courses devised by London Heathside within the Extension area should work well for young athlete events being closely confined and spectator friendly. The slight drawback is that there is no car parking within the parkland area and some of the nearby roads have restricted parking. Car sharing or better still use of public transport is advised.   (Golders Green Underground Station is about half mile). To assist you in getting to the park area the postcode for SatNav users is (NW11 7DP)
The first race will start at 12 noon (Under 11 Girls) – programme will then follow the usual pattern. There are changing rooms with toilets are available.
The attached map of the area that shows the location of the Extension which is on the top left on the map, link to map
Note: You do not have to be pre-entered, just turn up and run. Will any of our Female athletes please see TONY SMITH who will give you a race number
