On behalf of the Club and Myself, we thank him for his outstanding contribution he has made over the many years. Proposals – There were no proposals submitted for consideration at the AGM.

Update on Proposals for Development of Allianz ParkPrior to this DAVE BEDFORD gave a moving eulogy on the passing of KEITH MOYSE. KEITH was the team manager responsible for Shaftesbury successes in the Young Athletes League and Finals, as well as for the teams for the European Junior Clubs Cup. In the Young Athletes League we narrowly missed reaching the final in 1977, but in 1978 we did so, to finish fourth of the eight clubs. We have been in the final every year since then, a record no other club can equal. In 1979 and 1980 we were runners-up to Birchfield Harriers. Then in 1981 we achieved the first of our successes, to be repeated in 83, 84, 85, 87 and 88 – six times in all. In 1989 we were second to Blackheath Harriers, losing by 424 points to 430 after a tremendous meeting.
The European Junior Clubs Cup is a major international competition in which Shaftesbury have competed regularly since 1982. In that year we were invited to represent Great Britain on the basis of our success in the Young Athletes Final.
The competition is for Juniors, each country entering its top Junior club, and in the case of some countries this may be the national team. Between twelve and sixteen countries have been represented.
The meeting was held in Liege, Belgium for a number of years, where it all started. At our first appearance in 1982, we were second to Birchfield Harriers, who were there as holders of the title. In 1984 we were again second. In 1985 Shaftesbury we were winners, beating the national team of Greece into second place.
In 1986 it was the turn of Britain to stage the meeting, and Shaftesbury organised it at Copthall. It was put on fully up to international standards, with all the national anthems and flags of the competing countries. The reception that followed was at Wembley Stadium. On this occasion Switzerland were the winners, West Germany second and Shaftesbury third.
In 1987 the venue was Amsterdam, where Shaftesbury were fifth. In 1988 it was held at Krefeld, West Germany, with Shaftesbury second. And in 1989 it was hosted by Aix-Les-Bains, in France, and after a splendid match Shaftesbury were beaten by just four points by the Hungarian national team. In 1990 Shaftesbury hosted the meeting which was held at Barnet Copthall Stadium.
A moment of silence was held, and DAVID is attending his funeral on the Isle of Wight.
DAVID then gave an update on the proposed development of Allianz Park – Currently Saracens have a legal commitment to provide SBH and Barnet Schools access to the track and facilities from the beginning of May to end of August/September, to allow the hosting various track & field fixtures. From October to April (Winter rugby mode) we have access to the track (albeit limited at times) for training nights.
In 2020 the rugby season has been extended to the end of June, meaning the period for promoting our track and field meetings is limited to just July and August.
This year various meetings have taken place between SBH, Saracens and the London Borough of Barnet. The main objective was how the Saracens commitment to athletics for 2021 was going to be met. The plan is to provide a new stadium consisting of a 8-lane track, seating for 1,000, floodlights, Shaftesbury clubhouse and associated facilities such as catering and storage. This will be located in the field on the left hand side of Greenlands Lane as you enter Copthall from the Great North Way entrance. To achieve this timetable, the proposals which have been agreed by Barnet Council, will have to be agreed by the Mayor of London and the GLA by the end of 2019.

Following the meeting was the presentation of the awards for the 2018-2019 road and cross country season, and the 2019 track and field.
This being my last AGM as President, it was so enjoyable to meet and present the trophies to all the winners. And to meet in person all those athletes, coaches etc,to which I write about in the SBH weekly newsletter. I would like to thank FIONA GROOM for the work done in organising the return, the ordering and engraving the existing and new trophies, also KENNY GROOM for taking the photographs which will be available soon.
The presentation finished at 9.40pm.
Finally, a hat was left behind on a seat, please contact GEOFF MORPHITIS.

ALAN WELLER President

SPARTA TROPHY  It was in July 1950 when Denmark’s leading club, Sparta A.C. of Copenhagen, came to London as our guests. In a match at Parliament Hill we won both the Senior and Junior matches by a narrow margin, and we entertained some splendid sportsman. We were presented with what was soon to be called the SPARTA TROPHY, the trophy has recently undergone minor repairs, and as you can see the photograph shows what an outstanding trophy it is.

A replica of the two Norseman on top of a column in the Town Hall Square in Copenhagen. Each is blowing a lure, a great curved trumpet. Whether they are calling their kinsman to battle, or blowing a victory salute, doesn’t matter: for us they are sounding a fanfare as a tribute to our “Athlete of the Year” to whom the trophy is awarded annually.
The visit was returned in August 1951 when a party of forty from Shaftesbury went to Denmark. Sparta A.C. turned out in force and beat us in the country’s national stadium, though our Juniors were successful. There was also a match with the Attila Club of Nykobing on the island of Falster.
A few years later friendships were renewed, for in 1956 a party of Juniors and Youths travelled to Denmark to meet Sparta again, and there was also a match against Ben Hur (no chariots were used), another Copenhagen club. There were plenty of sightseeing, including a visit to Carlsberg brewery and a trip to Sweden.
There was a return visit the following year with a match at Maccabi Stadium, Hendon, and some forty Danes being welcomed into the homes of our members.
On a subsequent IAAF trip DAVE BEDFORD contacted Sparta AC and told them that we still valued the trophy they presented us. Their clubhouse is still part of same stadium.
During the time the trophy was in DAVE’S possession as the winner, it was damaged and repairs were carried out, sometime later we added the presentation case.

The Sparta Trophy is presented to the Male Athlete of the Year, these are the recipients since 1950 SBH Male Athlete Of The Year 1950 – 2019

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

After discussion with some of the athletes and team managers, and we decided we did not want to ask athletes to choose between representing their clubs or school and their county. We will still be entering teams in the National Intercounties competition on 7 March 2020.

NATIONAL LEAGUE IS TAKING SHAPEThe following article was published recently in Athletics Weekly.
Sunday 3 November will be a red-letter day for the Men’s British Athletics League and the UK Women’s League.
That date will see the biggest shake-up in national league athletics in the UK for half a century as the two leagues will hold simultaneous winding-up annual general meetings at a Birmingham hotel.
The meetings will see the end of the men’s BAL, founded in 1969, and the UKWAL, which was founded several years later.
If things go to plan the clubs will come together to create a new National Athletics League for combined men’s and women’s teams.
There are proposals that the current eight-team divisions will be replaced by 16 and 12-teamdivisions with fixtures on a round-robin basis.
Last season there were 36 clubs in the BAL and 32 in the UKWAL but not all clubs had teams in both and the new league will accommodate all 40 clubs that were in both leagues at the end of the 2019 season.
All current British Athletics League and UK Women’s Athletics League clubs will be guaranteed a place in the new National League. Of the 40 clubs making up the new league, 27 had teams in both the BAL and UKWAL and 13 teams had in one of the leagues.
There will be relegation from the national league for two years and the current rule which require clubs to field athletes in half the events will be waived for the same period. It will also have three divisions with four matches per season.
DEAN HARMAN, chairman of BAL, has told his clubs “We know for some clubs these proposals represent welcome progress while for others there will be concerns. However, the intention is to facilitate a transition for clubs without a team in the UKWAL or BAL.”
Both Kent AC and Newquay & Par, who finished runners-up and sixth respectively, in division two in 2018, withdrew from the BAL at the beginning of this year following the decision to stage joint meetings with UKWAL.

ALEXANDER STADIUM, BIRMINGHAM REDEVELOPMENTThe following article was published recently in Athletics Weekly.
Alexander Stadium Redevelopment for the 2022 Commonwealth Games are set to begin in the Spring. The £70m scheme will see capacity increase from 12,700 to 18,000 with more than 30,000 during the Games due to temporary seating.

Race Headquarters – Adjacent to the building by the playground at the north end of the north car park, close to the Start/Finish, refreshments will be available in this area. Registration will be adjacent to the Start/Finish.
Changing Facilities – There are changing rooms on the south side of the park, by the Sailing Centre.
Toilets are available in the building by the playground. Extra toilets will be provided nearby.
There are also toilets located at the Sailing Centre on the south side of the Park.
Course Location – North Side Stanborough Park – The Fixture Information and the course maps have been issued on the basis that we are able to use the field adjacent to the playground for an assembly area and for the finishing funnel. There is however the possibility that works will be starting in this field prior to 9 November. I have therefore drawn up some maps with an alternative position for the finishing funnel and appropriate adjustments to the course. These arrangements are less satisfactory than the ones I have issued so, as there is still no sign of the works starting, I am gambling on the hope that the field will still be clear on 9 November.
Course Description – Start and Finish in grassed field, remainder undulating parkland course suitable for spikes.
Public Transport – Welwyn Garden City Station (Main Line) 1.25 miles.
Directions From Major Roads – Leave the A1(M) at Junction 4, (after the Hatfield Tunnel). At the roundabout take the second exit to A414/A6129. At the next roundabout take the first exit A6129. At the bottom of the dual carriageway take the second exit out of the roundabout. The entrance to the car park on the north side is on your left after around 100m. The entrance to the car park on the south side is more or less opposite but you cannot gain access from the left side of the carriageway.
As early arrivers will undoubtedly fill the car park on the north side, you may be advised to go straight to the one on the south side.
Parking – There is a fairly large car park on the north side of the Park, adjacent to the course.
There is a very large car park on the south side of the Park, 5 minutes walk to the course.
These car parks operate by automatic number plate recognition. You must pay or you may incur a fine. Unfortunately we have not been able to negotiate a reduced rate this year, a list of the charges are published adjacent to this. It is a good idea to share cars and share costs. If you choose to park on the local roads, please park considerately and avoid causing any annoyance to residents.
YOU ARE ADVISED TO ALLOW SUFFICIENT TIME TO PARK AND PAY
There is a footpath under the road bridge, providing traffic-free access between the south side and the north side of the Park.
Access to both of these car parks is only permitted from the adjacent side of the carriageway. If you cannot find a space on the north side, to get to the south side you must drive to the roundabout at the top of the hill and return on the other side of the carriageway
YOU MUST OBEY THE TRAFFIC SIGNS
