LLOYD COWAN BURSARY OPEN FOR COACHES AND YOUNG ATLETES  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
Former SBH member LLOYD COWAN passed away on 11 January 2021, of Covid-19 at the relatively young age of 58. He unfortunately had underlying medical issues having recently suffered a stroke. LLOYD competed for us in the BAL in the mid-90’s. He set a club record for the 110m Hurdles with (13.75) in 1994 which is still 3rd on the SBH all-time list. He then moved up to 400m Hurdles and in 1995 ran (50.79) for 6th on the current SBH all-time list. LLOYD had his greatest success in coaching CHRISTINE OHURUOGU to Olympic Gold and countless other medals in International Championships.

Grants of up to £500 will be awarded to athletics coaches and to unfunded athletes with potential, aged between 16 and 23, for whom cost is a barrier to accessing developmental opportunities in athletics. The application window closes 23:59 on October 13. The selection process will take place the following week when the Grants Committee will meet to consider every submission. Decisions will be confirmed by the end of October. Sixty percent of UK-wide applicants received grants in the first edition of the award in 2021. European under-18 medallists TENDAI NYABADZA [1500m], REBECCA GRIEVE [Girls Medley Relay] and under-17 indoor 60mH British record-holder JAIDEN DEAN were among the first athlete recipients. GWENNAN LEWIS and ANITA RICHARDSON, who guides under-20 talent Success Eduan, were two of the coaches to receive awards. View the LLOYD COWAN Bursary guidance and application forms for athletes and coaches here.

The Lloyd Cowan Bursary was set up in memory of LLOYD COWAN MBE, who believed that no one with sporting potential should be held back by lack of support and opportunities. The Bursary awards grants of up to £500 once a year, both to qualified coaches and to unfunded athletes, aged 16-23, for whom cost is a barrier to accessing developmental opportunities in athletics.  LLOYD was an international athlete before hanging up his spikes and becoming one of the UK’s most successful coaches. He guided many leading British sprinters, including World, Olympic and Commonwealth 400m champion CHRISTINE OHURUOGU and European 110m hurdles champion ANDY TURNER. Tragically LLOYD died in January 2021, aged 58, after contracting COVID-19.

ELIUD KIPCHOGE SMASHES WORLD MARATHON RECORD IN BERLIN  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
After running first half at sub-2hr pace, the Kenyan slows in latter stages but still takes half a minute off his global mark with (2:01:09) as TIGIST ASSEFA of Ethiopia scores women’s win in (2:15:37). In the days leading up to the 2022 BMW Berlin Marathon the rumours from the Rift Valley were that ELIUD KIPCHOGE was in fantastic shape. The 37-year-old Kenyan is not known for hyperbole either so when he arrived in Germany and quietly predicted that he was looking for a “good race” it was an ominous sign that something special was about to happen. During a mesmeric display of distance running on Sunday 25 September, KIPCHOGE delivered on his promise and delighted the thousands of spectators lining the route as he took half a minute off his world record of (2:01:39) with (2:01:09). Amazingly, he scorched through halfway in (59:51) too. But he had to wave auf weidersehen to any hopes of breaking two hours on this World Marathon Majors course as he had to complete most of the second half of the race alone. Despite the vicious early pace he avoided hitting The Wall, however, and held on to not only smash his world record but he scored a fourth victory in Berlin, equalling the achievement of HAILE GEBRSELASSIE. “We went too fast,” he said, admitting that his original plan was to go through halfway in (60:40). Several thousand miles away and talking on Kenyan television, his coach PATRICK SANG agreed as he described the pace as “unfortunate … it was too fast for them”. Still, he cemented his status as the world’s greatest ever marathon runner with a world record that was achieved the hard way – with splits of (59:51) and (61:18). A half-marathon of (59:51) would have been a world record for that distance alone as recently as 1993. And at the INEOS 1:59 Challenge in Vienna three years ago he managed to maintain that pace for 26.2 miles but on that occasion he was helped by a phalanx of pacemakers for almost the entire distance.

Setting off in near perfect conditions on Sunday morning in Berlin, KIPCHOGE cruised through 10km in (28:23). At this stage KIPCHOGE had company as well from GUYE ADOLA and ANDAMLAK BELIHU of Ethiopia and they went through their 12th kilometre in a sizzling (2:47) – which is (1:59:26) pace. Going through 15km in (42:33), he was amazingly two seconds quicker than his (1:59:41) run from Vienna. ADOLA began to drop off the lead group just before halfway, though, and eventually dropped out. BELIHU, however, survived until just after halfway and held on to clock (2:06:40) in fourth place, although he was overtaken in the second half of the race by MARK KORIR of Kenya, who ran (2:05:58) for second, plus TADU ABATE of Ethiopia, who ran (2:06:28) in third. The first non-African home was KENYA SONOTA of Japan in (2:07:14).

Apart from the INEOS event in Vienna, the fastest half-marathon in a marathon before Berlin 2022 was (61:00) in London in 2018. So KIPCHOGE was now operating at a much faster pace than any runner in history in a standard marathon. Unlike Vienna he did not have any help with pacers either. Passing 30km in (85:40), it was now apparent the sub-two-hour run was slipping away but he was still more than a minute inside world record pace. Not surprisingly his speed began to fluctuate and after gradually slowing he ran his slowest kilometre of the race with (3:02) in the 38th kilometre before an even slower (3:11) in the 40th kilometre. He was still well on course to break the (2:01:39) that he ran in Berlin in 2018, though, and he rallied to finish in style. “No limitations,” he said, “after 38km I knew I would be capable of breaking the world record. Circumstances were great, and so was the organisation of the event. I’m really happy with today and impressed by the fans and their support.”

WORLD MARATHON RECORD PHOTOGRAPH  My thanks to DAVE BEDFORD, who appears to have a front row seat for the race. He pointed out that the pacemakers were wearing the SBH black and white vests.

CAN YOU HELP PLEASEI would welcome any contributions From Yourselves, any impending marriages, or additions to the family, any running or competing incidents, also past warm weather training/holidays (No Club 24 please). Currently the response has been excellent, but if you have anything that could make it into next week’s Newsletter – please email me.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

START FITNESS METROPOLITAN LEAGUE RACE NUMBERS – I have been asked to remind you that your race number must be kept by yourselves, and is to be used for all 5 fixtures.

TAMAREE TRAIL RUN – I recently received an update on APRIL HILL, from her grandfather JOHN. APRIL is currently taking a gap year from possibly joining Plymouth University. She is on a student working visa and staying with my son (her uncle) in Corlette, adjacent to Port Stephens, New South Wales.  She is working, partying, surfing and running (not sure about the order!!!).
It has been quite wet there, but I don’t think the trail was flooded when she ran.  She had her SBH vest on but it was difficult to see as she was wearing safety equipment, a requirement for the race. She has told me that it was exciting and will be entering more trail runs (entries are expensive compared with UK). I’ll keep you posted.

APRIL joined the club in November 2019 from Ipswich, her home county of Suffolk. Unfortunately, the hiatus of Covid wiped out a much of 2020 and 2021. In 2020 APRIL won the Under 17 Suffolk X/C Championships and was 31st in the English X/C Championships, 2021 saw her moving up to the Under 20 age-group, and her races were limited until the English X/C Relay Championships in November, in which the team finished 14th. Her final race of 2022, before venturing off to Australia, was the Southern Women’s Road Relay in March, running for the Senior Women’s team they finished in 12th place with 2 other Under 20’s in the team.

Like the previous event the recent rain has impacted some of the trails within Tomaree National Park, which is within the Port Stephens District, New South Wales and the race started in Fingal Bay. On part of the TRA12.5k course there are some short sections of fire trail which have water across them, and one of the steep fire trail climbs has also been bypassed onto the adjacent fire trail to avoid the deep water. This means that in these sections your feet will get wetAPRIL finished 2nd in a time of (1:09.19) and was 1st Female. Apologies but I could enlarge the photograph.

Port Stephens, New South Wales is around 160km North of Sydney. Port Stephens is an easy 2.5 hours drive from Sydney, with its beautiful beaches, stunning sand dunes, coastal walks, national parks, pristine waters.

MULLER ENDS SPONSORSHIP WITH UK ATHLETICS  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
Commercial partnership between dairy products company and UKA draws to a close after seven years. UK Athletics is looking for a new title sponsor for its major events after Müller decided not to renew its sponsorship deal with the governing body. The company, which produces yogurts and desserts, have supported the British Athletics event series since 2016 as title sponsors to events such as Diamond League fixtures in the UK and the annual indoor grand prix in Birmingham. In 2020 Müller extended its support through to 2022 but has decided not to renew into 2023 which means the governing body will be searching for a main sponsor, whereas the eye-catching television adverts featuring athletes like LAURA MUIR, HANNAH COCKCROFT and KATARINA JOHNSON-THOMPSON promoting Müller products will end.

JACK BUCKNER, the new chief executive of UKA, said: “We’d like to thank Müller for their support of our events over the years and the commitment they showed to athletics. They have shown great enthusiasm and have creatively engaged with all parts of the sport through supporting our events and we wish them well. “For what was originally a commitment made to last the summer of 2016, the fact that it grew to an eventual seven year collaboration shows the value the sport brings to partners. “We will of course be seeking new partners for our events and the wider sport knowing that athletics continues to offer a strong return on investment. We are excited for our event series in 2023 with a return to the London Stadium already announced and will be announcing our other fixtures soon.” UK Athletics has a good history of securing major sponsors but they all naturally run their course and finish at some stage. In the run-up to London 2012 the sport signed insurance company Aviva (also known as Norwich Union and CGU) in what was, at the time, the biggest sponsorship deal in British sport outside football. But along with other sponsors like McCain, Aviva ended their support after the 2012 Games. Other supporters of the sport in recent years include Sainsbury’s and, more recently, Spar.

UPCOMING ROAD RELAYSThere has been a change this season, the Southern Road Relays take place on Saturday 24 September at Crystal Palace. Earlier this year many of the clubs that compete, aired their views on the problems of getting to Crystal Palace. Following consultations with the SEAA and ERRA, it was agreed there will be a second fixture, which will take place on Saturday 24 September at Aldershot.
The National Road Relays take place on Saturday 8 October at Sutton Park, in which there is a qualification required for Senior Men’s teams. Following a meeting of the ERRA General Committee last week, they published that the qualification process for this year’s men’s 6 stage road relays to be held at Sutton Park on Saturday 8 October.
The first 8 ‘A’ teams will be invited to the National from both races at Crystal Palace and Aldershot. Teams filling the next 10 places at each race will then be considered by the Secretary and Championship Secretary of the ERRA Committee to determine which other teams will be invited which will also include ‘B’ teams.

UPCOMING CROSS COUNTRY SEASONIt is just 4 weeks until the first fixture takes place, which is the Start Fitness Metropolitan League at Claybury on Saturday 15 October.
There are 5 fixtures throughout the winter, with the final fixture on 11 February at Trent Park. There are 8 races on the day, which are for Under 11 (over 9) up to Veteran Men and Women. You do not have to be pre-entered, just turn up and run. Could I ask you to contact your respective Team Manager if you intend running this season, as prior to the 1st race we have to give a list of SBH athletes to the Metropolitan League organisers, following this they allocate a specific race number to all SBH runners. All athletes should keep and re-use their number in all 5 races.
Start times will be published in the SBH Weekly Newsletter, once they are confirmed.

WORLD INDOORS IN NANJING POSTPONED TO 2025  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

The World Indoor Championships in Nanjing have been postponed for a third time because of the Covid-19 pandemic and will now take place in 2025, 40 years after the inaugural edition in Paris.

The championships were scheduled to take place in 2020 but were pushed back to 2021 and then 2023. They will now occur five years after the initial date. It means the next edition of the World Indoors will be in Glasgow on March 1-3, 2024.

The reason why Nanjing will host the event a year later is because bidding has already commenced for the 2026 edition of the championships. “We’re disappointed that we have had to postpone this event again due to circumstances beyond our control, but we have done so to give certainty to athletes and Member Federations preparing for the 2023 competition season,” World Athletics President SEBASTIAN COE said. “Unfortunately, the timeframe will prevent us from relocating the 2023 event, but the indoor championships will return in 2024 in Glasgow.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2023  Takes place in Budapest, Hungary from 19-27 August 2023.
The qualification period is 31 July 2022 to 30 July 2023, excluding the Marathon and Walks. These are the qualification standards required.
