THE THIRD RE-UNION AT THE SHAFTESBURY TAVERN – Following last years succesful meet up, therefore this year their will be another get together in the Shaftesbury Tavern in Hornsey. We will be meeting at 7pm on Monday 1 December 2025. The Shaftesbury Tavern is located on the corner of Shaftesbury Road and Hornsey Road. It would be great to see some of you there! there will be a few drinks, good Thai (and other food) and most importantly good company and conversation!

The Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers Centenary Year Book states: And so it came about that in 1890 a few lads, most of whom would have been about 16 years of age, assembled at Jubilee Hall and decided to form a running club and called it Shaftesbury Harriers. Jubilee Hall was then newly built and used for dances, concerts and such-like social events, and was over what was then called a coffee tavern. It stood at the corner of Hornsey Road and Fairbridge Road, not far from Hornsey Road railway station, and about a mile from Hampstead Heath.
It seems probable that, like others of the many clubs being formed about that time, the title came from a road in the district. Possibly some lads lived in Shaftesbury Road close by: with its tall Victorian houses the road has not changed so much with the passing years. The Shaftesbury Tavern is still on the corner.

TCS LONDON MARATHON 2025 CLUB ENTRIESThe club should be allocated 2 places for next years London Marathon on 26 April. These places are for active club members that were unsuccessful in the ballot.  Places will be allocated based on issues such as length of membership, participation for the club in recent years etc. To apply for one of these Club places you will need to send proof of application/rejection to our Club Secretary, Phil Cunningham by email to billylow@ntlworld.com by Monday 29 September 2025 at which time a decision will be made by the Club Officers.

ENGLAND ATHLETICS AGE-GROUP CHANGES 2026 – England Athletics is changing its age groups for young athletes from U13, U15, U17, and U20 to U12, U14, U16, U18, and U20, effective from 1 April 2026. This shift aims to improve athlete progression and development by creating a more cohesive structure within the sport. The new categories are based on the athlete’s age at the start of the competition year, ensuring fair competition and proper categorization.

What the Changes Mean
New Age Categories: The new age groups for young athletes will be U12, U14, U16, U18, and U20.
Effective Date: These changes will be fully implemented starting from April 1, 2026.
Purpose: The goal is to support athletes’ progression by aligning age groups more closely with their developmental stages.
Flexibility for Pilots: Competition providers have the option to pilot the new age groups and technical rules during the 2025-2026 indoor season if they wish.
Existing Categories: This change affects young athletes under UK Athletics rules and will affect the U13, U15, U17, and U20 age categories currently in place.

How to Prepare
Understanding Age Groups:
Athletes, coaches, and parents should familiarize themselves with the new age groups to ensure proper participation.
Checking Key Dates:
Athletes’ age is determined by their age on a specific date within the competition year, so it’s essential to understand how this applies to the new categories.

ENGLAND ATHLETICS THROWS COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER Just received the August issue from NICK RIDGEON of England Athletics – England Athletics Throws Community Newsletter August 2025

UPCOMING FIXTURES – Are now shown as 2 sections – The first section covers the fixtures that SBH compete in and other major fixtures – The second section covers the Open Meeting fixtures, that you have to enter yourselves.

EMMA GOUGE who is the Stadium Athletics and SBH Co-Ordinator had advised me that any athletes coming outside the usual Tuesday and Thursday that they can tap and go with the sum up machine in West reception or scan the QR code, which they will find on the pedestrian gate on entry. We would remind you that athletes should not come through the clubhuse without paying the entry fee. This gets picked up, not only by other athletes that pay, and find it very frustrating and unfair, but also by Saracens security system which can result in a fine, and a ban from using the facility.

SHAFTESBURY BARNET HARRIERS SUBSCRIPTIONS – Our new Club year started on 1 October 2024. The current SBH annual subscription is £85 (following the 2024 SBH AGM) and the current England Athletics annual registration from 1 April 2025 is £20. The current total is £105 and you will be advised via the SBH Membermojo system, when your subscription and EA fees are due for payment

RESULTS
Just to clarify, that the results I publish can be different to those that are shown on the Power of 10. The differences relate to seasons and personal best performances. For example in the recent EYAL results, an athlete in the 200m ran (24.1), and on his profile his season’s best was shown as (23.88) indoors. As the 200m indoors and outdoors are totally different type of events, I had shown the (24.1) as a season’s best. Regarding Master athletes any personal best performances relate to their current age-groups, as Club Records for Masters age-groups are in 5 year periods.

A LAP WITH EMILY NEWNHAM  The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.
We talk to the newly-crowned European under-23 champion who is having to become accustomed to keeping top-class company. It’s hard to say which moment was more surreal for EMILY NEWNHAM – winning a European under-23 gold medal or sitting in a call room alongside FEMKE BOL. Both belong to a whirlwind 12 months that have catapulted the 21-year-old from an emerging prospect to one of Britain’s top 400m hurdlers.

Her triumph at the European Under-23 Championships in Bergen last month delivered it all – a 400m hurdles personal best and championships record of (54.08), as well as a second gold medal as part of the victorious 4x400m relay team. “I don’t think I’ll properly process it until the season’s over,” NEWNHAM says, reflecting on the win. “It still doesn’t feel real. As athletes, we’re always thinking of the next thing.”

Over the past year, she has not only stood on the European Indoor podium in both the mixed and women’s 4x400m relays, but also shared warm-up tracks and call rooms with some of the sport’s biggest names – including reigning world champion BOL. “It’s just insane,” she says. “In call rooms I’ll be sitting next to her and I’m like: ‘Oh my gosh it’s FEMKE BOL’ but I have to tell myself to focus because I am about to race her. You watch athletes like her for years and I think that’s why I can’t comprehend where I am now. I still wonder how I got to this point.”

The gold medal in Bergen was the product of two years of quiet rebuilding, after a painful near-miss at the European U20 championships in 2023 taught her more than any win ever could. Missing out on a medal by just 0.001 seconds lit a fire that hasn’t gone out since. “The anger and the sadness stays with you so much more than the triumph of winning,” she says. “I learned back then that I wasn’t ready mentally. Everyone around me knew I was physically capable of getting a medal but I didn’t have the mental headspace to go out there and achieve it.”

To prepare for her 2024 campaign, NEWNHAM took a different approach. She worked not just on her stride patterns or conditioning, but her mindset – even bringing in a sports psychologist to help her tackle nerves and expectations. Her gold medal race, ironically, wasn’t the cleanest in terms of execution. “It didn’t go to plan at all,” she says. “The gun went and everything that my coach told me to do… I did the complete opposite. I raced it rather than ran it. There are two different ways you can do a hurdle event – focusing on your stride pattern and sticking to the plan or sprinting it and hoping for the best. “I didn’t even look at the clock when I crossed the line. Everyone thought my scream was because I saw the time – I had no idea what I’d run.”

NEWNHAM’S European weekend didn’t end with the hurdles. The next morning, she was back in her spikes for the 4x400m relay. “I got back from anti-doping and the medal ceremony at 10:30pm, I couldn’t sleep until 1am, and was up again at 6:30am,” she says. Still, the relay team delivered – a run that represented redemption after their disqualification at the U20s two years previously. At the time of writing, Newnham was preparing for the British Championships and aiming to make sure of her World Championships place in Tokyo. The plan after the Birmingham is to reset, refocus, and fine-tune – all with the goal of reaching the biggest stage of all. “I feel like I haven’t trained in forever,” she says. “So I’ll go into a training block, race another 400m somewhere and I’d like to do a 200m since I haven’t done one since the indoor season. Hopefully everything goes well.”

If you could choose one person to train/compete with, past or present, who would it be and why?
Definitely FEMKE BOL, I don’t know how she does it. She sent me a message on Instagram after my race in Bergen and I couldn’t believe it. Hopefully I’ll get the opportunity to speak to her in person one day and not just over Instagram.

COMMONWEALTH GAMES 2026  This is an insight published on the BBC website about the July 2026 games, which takes place in Glasgow.

The 2022 Games in Birmingham was widely considered a roaring success, providing a post-Covid buzz to the city, the country and the competing Commonwealth nations. However, it came at a price. Costing £800m, it was the most expensive sports event hosted in the UK since the 2012 Olympics. Reform of the Games – making it more cost-effective, sustainable and future-proof – was already an intense discussion point.

In July 2023 the Australian state of Victoria pulled out of hosting the 2026 event, eventually finalising its withdrawal in August 2023. With the State Premier DANIEL ANDREWS concluded it was “all cost and no benefit” and plunged the future of the Commonwealth Games into serious doubt. After a period of the the City of Glasgow offered to host the games. The Scottish city hosted the Games in 2014 but it will have a very different, streamlined look when it returns there in two years’ time, with only 10 sports to be played out over four venues at an estimated cost of about £140m. “The Games had got out of hand – it was too big and trying to be a ‘mini Olympics’,” Commonwealth Games Federation chief executive KATIE SADLEIR told BBC Sport. Earlier, SADLEIR said: “We want to create a sustainable model that can go around the Commonwealth because the Commonwealth members love the Commonwealth Games and we want to take it there as well.”

The opening ceremony takes place on Thursday 23 July 2026 with the closing ceremony on Sunday 2 August 2026.

REQUEST FROM TEAM MANAGERS – We are asking that you reply to team managers when they contact you? It’s very difficult to select a team if the athletes don’t reply especially when we can see that they have read the text. Even if they are unavailable the team managers need to know!

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.
