BRITISH DISCUS TALENT HAS A GREAT FUTURE  The following article was published in Athletics Weekly recently.
GREGORY THOMPSON is looking forward to making his mark at the British Championships and IAAF World Championships in Doha after jumping to No.4 on the UK all-time rankings for the discus.

The Shaftesbury Barnet athlete is studying for a double degree in kinesiology and philosophy at Maryland University in the US but despite his busy academic schedule threw a Doha qualifying mark (65.56m) at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia last month and is hoping for further improvements this summer.
The UK record (68.24m) was set in 2012 by LAWRENCE OKOYE and during the same year GREGORY won the English Schools gold in Gateshead throwing in trainers.
Talent runs in the family, as he is the son of NEVILLE THOMPSON – a former GB international. NEVILLE threw (55.68m) at Crystal Palace in 1993 and GREGORY beat that mark at the same venue soon after his 20th birthday.
“With my dad being an international from the moment I could walk was, like, lets grab a disc and have some fun with it,” he remembers. “I have vivid memories when I was young of trying to pick up a 2kg discus after he’d thrown it and trying to throw it back to him but he told me to take my time and not hurt myself. When I grew up he was always the archetype and what I wanted to live up to.”
Initially GREGORY played rugby, football, badminton and he loves snooker too. He has a brother in the Arsenal football squad as well, but his heart is in athletics.
Formally coached by his father, GREGORY is now guided by TRAVIS COLEMAN at Maryland University. Unusually, he is left-footed and but throws with his right arm.
“My dad always threw with his right arm from the moment he got me a small makeshift discus as a kid I tried to put it in my right hand,” he explains.
He also plays badminton and throws a javelin with his right hand but throws darts and a basketball with his left. “When it comes the finer motor or precision skills or writing, I use my left,” he says.
GREGORY stands 6ft tall but is not that large for an elite discus thrower. So, he utilises his speed in the circle and athleticism to get the most out of himself. “When I threw 65m recently, the athlete who was second, ROJA STONA of Jamaica, is about 6ft 6-7in tall and completely dwarfed me.”
As he reaches the end of his fourth year at Maryland University, too, he juggles training with studies. All eyes will be on GREGORY to see if he can build on his big early season throw. As someone who won a medal in a UK maths competition seven years ago, he will have no problem calculating how many more metres he needs to leapfrog up the rankings.
In addition to OKOYE, the only Brits to have thrown further are BRETT MORSE and PERISS WILKINS – although the latter is discredited figure after allegations of using a light discus at competitions in addition to a doping ban.
“I knew something was in the tank this year and something was brewing,” he says on his big recent throw. “I threw a PB in training before the Penn Relays and I thought that if I got everything right I could throw 65 metres. “I’ve felt my potential has been around 65 metres for a year or so but it hasn’t happened until this year due to a myriad of physical and mental factors.”
GREGORY, who turned 25 recently, has previous international experience as he finished 10th in the 2013 European Juniors. But he is aiming to seal his selection for Doha at the summer’s Muller British Championships – a competition where he finished runners-up to MORSE twelve months ago – and would love to compete at the Diamond Leagues in the UK and World University Games in Italy.
“I’m looking forward to being a small fish in a big pond and rising to the challenges.”

HERTFORDSHIRE UNDER 13 GIRLS INTER-COUNTIES  I received the following message from MEGAN BREEN who is the Hertfordshire U13 Girls Track and Field Team Manager.
It is coming up to the time of year where I start looking at results on the Power of 10 in the lead up to me selecting the Hertfordshire girls U13 team for the Inter-Counties Championships that is being held on Saturday 27th July 2019. Previously – I have had some very disappointed girls – for when I have selected them they are unable to compete due to family holidays already being booked. I thought this year I’d email key clubs so potential athletes can be advised of the date in advance.

I know that it is still early in the season, however, if you feel that you have any athletes who may be in contention for selection for these championships please can the athlete’s parents be made aware of the date as it falls in the school holidays. To clarify, contention for selection entails: Born in Hertfordshire OR Lives in Hertfordshire, an athlete in the top 2 in the county for their event

A WARNING REGARDING OPEN MEETINGS 2019 – I spoke to 2 of the organisers of open meetings, regarding whether there was a closing date for their meeting, especially as now entries are online only. Their response was when a meeting opens on the online system, there could be a 100m event that takes place between 19.00pm to 19.45pm, they would have ascertained that between these times there will be 8 races. Once the 64 entries for those 8 races have been filled, the event is therefore closed. Therefore, there could be a chance that an event could be closed 1 Week or 2 weeks before the meeting date. Therefore, please beware of this.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November last year “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.
