SHAFTESBURY BARNET HARRIERS ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 30 NOVEMBER 2021 – Was held last Tuesday 30 November in the East Stand 100 Club at the StoneX Stadium. Presented by Club Chainman JOHN KELLY, General Secretary PHILIP CUNNINGHAM, Treasurer GEOFF MORPHITIS and Clerk DAVE BRADLEY.
On behalf of myself ALAN WELLER, it was so good to meet many of our athletes, coaches etc, who have featured in this year’s SBH Weekly Newsletter’s, especially after last year when the AGM was held on zoom.

The meeting was opened by Club Chairman JOHN KELLY, who welcomed the many attendees, which included our athletes, coaches and parents. JOHN also read out and asked for any apologies of absence.
The first item on the Agenda was – Minutes of the 30 September 2021 AGM, in which there were no comments on these.
Item 3 – Matters arising, in which there were none.
Item 4 – Annual Report for the year ended 30 September 2021, in which Club Secretary PHILIP CUNNINGHAM gave a brief insight into the report.
This year has been a testing year, especially with all the Covid-19 regulations. But credit must be given to the various track and field leagues, the National Athletic League, Eastern Young Athletes League and the Middlesex Young Athletes League all took place, and were supported by our athletes and officials. Shaftesbury also promoted the four London Inter Club Challenge fixtures, in which our organisation skills were tested to the full, each fixture was supported by our officials and many SBH athletes, and overall they were an outstanding success. Finally, it was the year of the Olympics and Para-Olympics in Tokyo, and the club had 6 athletes competing.
The annual report was then proposed by GERALD ALTERMAN and seconded by JEREMY DEMPSEY
Item 5 – Accounts and the Treasurers report for the year ended 30 September 2021, in which Club Treasurer GEOFF MORPHITIS gave a roundup of the accounts, and overall it shows the club has a healthy bank balance at the end of September 2021. Appreciation was given to CLYDE GORDON who produced and verified the accounts.
The accounts were then proposed by JOHN KELLY and seconded by ALAN WELLER
Item 6 – Election of Officers, in which Club Chairman JOHN KELLY put forward the list, and highlighted that we now have a full complement of 8 council members. One item brought up was the new role within the club – Social Media, GEOFF MORPHITIS emphasised that the current social media, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc within the club requires revamping. DANIEL REES who is a current 400m Hurdler with the club, has taken on this role.
Item 7 – Election of Vice-Presidents, in which the list was accepted en-bloc.
Item 8 – Election of Life-Members, JOHN KELLY stated that there is a proposal from the Executive for the election of NEELAM KADERBHOY as life-member. GEOFF MORPHITIS outlined NEELAM’S time with Shaftesbury. NEELAM joined Shaftesbury 37 years ago, and was an accomplished track runner, and eventually found her niche on the road. In the past years NEELAM has turned to coaching and had a squad of our Young Athletes, also took on the role of team manager of our Middlesex Young Athletes League team. Most of you are aware that this time last year NEELAM was diagnosed with cancer, but as we all know NEELAM is a fighter and 12 months on she has shown considerable improvement, and currently in a home in Watford. NEELAM is regularly in contact with many of you on WhatsApp, and regularly receives visits from her friends at the club. NEELAM was duly elected as a life-member
There being no other business, the AGM closed at 8.10pm.

SHAFTESBURY BARNET HARRIERS BEST PERFORMANCE TRACK AND FIELD AWARDS 2021 – Took place on Tuesday 30 November at the Stonex Stadium, East Stand 100 Club, following the Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers Annual General Meeting. There were no Cross Country Awards for the 2020/21 season due to Covid-19.
The presentation of awards was introduced by GEOFF MORPHITIS who ran through the 2021 highlights of each winner, Club President GEOFF WILLIAMS presented the award to each winner, and JEREMY SOTHCOTT took the photographs.

START FITNESS METROPOLITAN LEAGUE – The third fixture of five took place last Saturday 4 December at the Hillingdon Sports Centre, Uxbridge.
The day started with our Under 11s, in which BEN KASPAR finished 5th and JASMYN PERRING finishing 17th. The Boys team who were 2nd at Welwyn, finished in 3rd place, and overall the have moved up from 4th to 3rd place, the Girls who were 7th at Welwyn slipped to 12th place. Following on was the Under 13 Boys, with a team of 6 runners, dominated the race, yet again winning the race, and now hold a 35 point lead overall over Woodford Green and Essex Ladies, EUAN PHILLIPS, PRINCE VICTORUS JOHN and ARTHUR PHILLIPS,finished 3rd, 4th and 10th respectively. Under 13 Girls race, POSIE SHAW in her 13th consecutive race, after finishing 4th and 2nd in the first two fixtures, finished in 1st place, the team with ERIN GIBLIN and NYAH CAMPBELL-CAINE improved their overall position from 6th to 3rd place. The Under 15 Boys/Under 17 Men had ABDIRAHIM HAMUD U17 running his first race of the season, and what a race, he was given 1st place over the Welwyn winner with both of them given the same time, the team with MAX WINFIELD and SPIKE BLAKE finishing 5th and 7th respectively. dominated the race winning by some25 points, and hold a lead overall of 104 points. The Under 15 Girls/Under 17 Women were still struggling with numbers, MYA MAIRS-INGRAM and ASHA HORBACKI finishing 34th and 39th respectively, with the team slipping from 10th to 12th overall. The Senior Men had 13 runners, with ASHWIN FOWKES-GAJAN U20 finishing in 47th place to secure the Under 20 Club Championship, DANIEL NICHOLLS won the Senior Men’s 5 Mile Club Championship and ROBERT RIGBY V60 won the Masters Men’s 40+ Club Championship, the team improved their 12th place overall, moving up to 11th place, also our Veterans team who had 8 runners, moved up from 6th to 5th place overall. Finally, the Senior Women team struggled with numbers again, with CHARLENE JACOBS-CONRADIE V40 finishing in 14th place, the team who finished 5th at Welwyn, slipped one place to 6th place overall.
The next fixture is on 15 January at Wormwood Scrubs, so put it in your diary now.

NORTH WEST LONDON LEAGUE – The third fixture of five took place at Trent Park on 27 November.
BRIAN FOWLER had fractured right arm at Trent Park which left his right arm encased in a heavy lump of plaster, thus one finger typing with left hand has taken a long time and has been carried out in gentle stages. Regarding the results, we are still awaiting the overall team positions after 3 fixtures.

Another excellent day for Shaftesbury, starting with the Under 11 Boys with BEN KASPAR winning the race and XANDER REESE finishing 2nd, the team packed well to win the team race by 12 points. The Under 11 Girls with VERA DOUDKO and JASMYN PERRIN finishing 15th and 18th respectively, with the team finishing in 3rd place. The Under 13 Boys team made it 3 wins out of 3 for the season, we had 4 finishers in the first 13, EUAN PHILLIPS, PRINCE VICTORUS JOHN, KEEYAN SHAH and ARTHUR PHILLIPS finished 1st, 2nd, 8th and 13th respectively. The Under 13 Girls had NYAH CAMPBELL-CAINE and ERIN GIBLIN who finished 5th and 6th respectively, which gave them a 2nd place in the team result. In the Under 15 Boys and Girls races, TOMMY NARVAEZ-WHITE finished 16th, SAMUEL BORDOLEY 24th and PHOEBE MUSIC 24th.

Car parking spaces is limited and we had considerable problems with too many cars when we were last there in 2019. If you can share cars please, also do not park on the areas marked out for the course.

SURF’S UP FOR ENGLISH SCHOOLS RUNNERS – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Newquay proves a blustery venue for the 40th ESAA Cross Country Cup as leading schools from around the nation battle for honours. Strong north-westerly winds hitting the coast of Newquay in Cornwall might have been great news for local surfers hoping to catch some monster waves. But for teenage athletes at the English Schools Cross Country Cup at the town’s Tretherras School it simply meant another challenge on a course that was already wickedly undulating and very greasy underfoot due to recent wet weather. The 40th edition of this event was visiting Newquay for the third time in 12 years and competitors weren’t quite as lucky as the last occasion, in 2014, when unseasonably warm weather saw school teachers and spectators wearing t-shirts and shorts. This time there was a real chill in the air, boggy ground and gusty winds. Perfect cross-country conditions, many would agree. Overnight winds played havoc with the course infrastructure as well with organisers waking on race day (Dec 4) to find markers and tape had blown over. Some teams were unable to make the trip either due to Covid. Others endured a mammoth journey from places like Cumbria and the North East of England – a journey they were keen to make after the pandemic led to the cancellation of last winter’s event. The event is the little sister of the English Schools Championships – which takes place this winter at Hop Farm in Kent in March – and it is mainly focused on school teams element.

The first race of the day – the inter girls event – was won by Guildford High School but the individual victory went to ZOE GILBODY of Thomas Telford School. GILBODY beat JESS BAILEY to the English Schools title in a dip finish in Liverpool just days before the first national lockdown in March 2020 and here she finished eight seconds ahead of MAISEY BELLWOOD and KATIE PYE before collapsing to her knees in exhaustion. “The wind really took it out of me,” she said.

REBECCA FLAHERTY led Bradford Grammar School to gold in the senior girls race as her team-mates AMELIE LANE (5th), EMILY GIBBINS (6th) and CARLA BARENNES (28th) ran strongly behind to continue the school’s fine tradition of endurance sport. Impressively, former Bradford students include triathletes ALISTAIR and JONNY BROWNLEE. “I did lots of sports to begin with,” said FLAHERTY. “Then my older brother began running harder in year seven and I just copied him. I ran in the English Schools fell running event this year but my downhill running wasn’t quite up to scratch. I really enjoyed it here though as it has a good mix of ground. It’s hilly but it’s not ‘fell running hills’. If there were no hills it’d be a very congested race too.” Like many athletes in Newquay, it was FLAHERTY’S first trip to Cornwall too. “We’re driving straight home now and will get back about 1am. After this I’ll sleep well!”

Inter boys winner HENRY SHEFFIELD was in a hurry to get back home as he had another cross-country race the following day in Gloucestershire. He won gold for Marling School of Stroud as Dr Challoner’s took the team prize. “I’m so tired I can hardly talk,” said SHEFFIELD, who was battered mid-race by a short and unwelcome hail storm. “It was such a hard race. I took the lead on a downhill which felt natural and tried to push it from there. “ He added: “It’s a great course – one of the favourites that I’ve done. It was only 5km but felt like 10km. When the hail was coming into my face I felt like stopping but I carried on. I’m so happy to get the win.”

Senior races were taking place at the English Schools Cross Country Cup for the first time since the event began in 1981 and SAM HODGSON took the boys title for Reading Blue Coat School ahead of ROWAN MIELL-INGRAM as third-placed MATTHEW DUBERY led Judd School of Kent to team victory. A competitive race saw four runners still in contention on the final lap but HODGSON made a decisive break with about half a mile to go. “I wasn’t really expecting to be up there so when it came to the last lap I thought ‘hey I can maybe win this’,” he said. “I put in a little dig to test them out on the last lap and I felt their legs weren’t as strong as mine and when we went on to the steeper section I thought ‘let’s go for it’. I felt that was the way I’d win as I haven’t got a sprint on me.”

TILLY ROBINSON took the junior girls title for Guildford High School with Sevenoaks School winning the team honours. Into the closing stages she still had a lot of work to do but finished strongly to win by a couple of seconds. “It’s my biggest win yet,” she said.

JAKE MEYBURGH was also smiling after winning junior boys gold for St George’s College Weybridge, while The Coopers Company & Coborn from Upminster won the team title. “It was so windy and hilly so I knew I’d have to try hard into the wind,” said MEYBURGH. Unlike lots of athletes he didn’t have to jump in a mini-bus to start the long drive home either. “We’re staying here tomorrow to go for a walk on the beaches!” he said.
