NORTH LONDON CHAMPIONSHIPS AND NORTH WEST LONDON LEAGUE – We have just received the start times for the 23 November fixture, please see upcoming fixtures. 

LONDON CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS – Take place this Saturday at Parliament Hill, Hampstead, nearest station I Gospel Oak, Start times 13.15pm Junior/Senior Women, 14.00pm Junior/Senior Men. Note: You will have to be pre-entered by your Team Manager Simon Keene. 

LONDON YOUTH GAMES – Take place before the London Cross Championships in which we will have many runners representing their Boroughs. 

ALLAN SMITH RECEIVES SCOTTISH AWARDS – ALLAN received two prestigious sporting accolades at the Commonwealth Games Scotland dinner held in Glasgow on Saturday 9 November. Firstly, he received a Scottish Sports Aid Merit Award for 2013 due to his outstanding results and performances during the year.

Note: the committee only presents five awards annually to the most meritorious individuals from 40 sports supported by this charity. All original nominations must come via the respective national sporting bodies.

Lastly, he was presented with the main award of the Junior Sportsperson of the Year. Previous athletics recipients of this award have included Sandra Whittaker, Tom McKean and Ian Mackie who all went onto the World Championships and Olympics. Photograph attached of Allan with his awards.

UKA FUTURES PROGRAMME ATHLETES FOR 2013/2014The Futures Programme which underpins the World Class Performance Programme (WCPP) was created five years ago to provide more targeted support for young athletes and their coaches. It focuses on the athletes who UK Athletics believes demonstrate the potential to ultimately achieve future success at the IAAF World Championships or Olympic Games, have the potential to be selected to the WCPP within two years and are typically in the 17- 20 age range, but with flexibility towards athletes who are deemed an exceptional case for support.

Three of SBH talented Juniors have been added to the programme, congratulations to SABRINA BAKARE (JANE DIXON), KYLE LANGFORD (GEORGE HARRISON) and NICK PERCY (JOHN HILLIER).

SHAFTESBURY BARNET HARRIERS AND NORTH LONDON NETWORK, INDOOR TRAINING AT ALLIANZ PARK – The Network have agreed to promote a 10 week training camp at Allianz Park to improve the skills and knowledge of Network coaches and their athletes in Pole Vault, High Jump, Triple Jump and Long Jump. The camp will run from WEDNESDAY 16 OCTOBER to WEDNESDAY 18 DECEMBER inclusive. Following feedback from the athletes and coaches after the first 3 weeks of the scheme, we have decided to modify the arrangements as follows.

The weekly session will start at 19.00 and end at 21.00 (warm up starts at 18.30). The cost to athletes to attend per session will be £3 per head for young athletes (U20) and students and £5 per head for seniors to include entry into the facilities.

LEE MCCONNELL HAD A BABY BOY Congratulations to Lee and Craig who last week had a son, Ethan. Lee hopes to return to training as soon as possible in an effort to make the Commonwealth Games team for Scotland.

ACTIVE TRAINING WORLD METROPOLITAN LEAGUE (CROSS COUNTRY) MATCH 2Took place last Saturday 9 November at Fairlands Valley Park, Stevenage. We had rain on and off, with the temperature hovering around 7 Celsius. The course was soft throughout.

The overall results from all our teams were excellent, with Team wins from our Under 13 Girls, Under 13 Boys and Senior Women. Also the Under 15/17 Women finished 3rd, Senior Men finished 5th and the Under 15/17 Men finished 6th.

There were Individual wins from JAMIE HARPER U13 and RACHEL FELTON Senior Women, remaining top ten finishes came from GERRY O’BRIEN U13 4th, NATHAN FERNANDES U13 7th, MIA GROOM U13 4th, SCARLETT KENT U13 7th, NATALIE CONNOR U17 3rd, LIANNE LANGFORD U15 4th, GLEN WATTS Senior Men 3rd, LIAM DEE U20 10th and MELISSA COURTNEY U23 6th.

In the Men’s Junior Cash Prizes it was a clean sweep for us, LIAM DEE was awarded £55 for first place, PHILLIP CROUT picked up second place £30 and BEN ROCHFORD received £15 for third place. ELEANOR HUNT was awarded £15 for finishing third Junior Woman.

The Men’s Senior Cash Prize League is led by Shaun Dixon of Highgate Harriers with 793 points, GLEN WATTS is in 2nd place with 792 points. ORLANDO EDWARDS V35 is in 12th place with 748 points and BEN ROCHFORD U20 is in 19th place with 732 points. RICHARD GOODMAN who missed this race has 400 points, and needs to run the final 3 races to have the opportunity of finishing in the top ten.

The Women’s Senior Cash Prize League is led by RACHEL FELTON who now has 299 points, MARGARET COOPER V45 is in 14th place with 256 points and LUCY SHORT is in 22nd place with 227 points.

In the HOWARD WILLIAMS TROPHY we have improved our position in both categories. The Senior Trophy (Men & Women) is led by Highgate Harriers with 39 points (2 wins), 2nd Serpentine 39 points (1 win), 3rd Woodford Green with Essex Ladies 36 points (0 wins) and we have moved up to 4th with 33 points (1 win). The Junior Trophy (U13, U15 & U17 Men & Women) we have now taken up the top spot with 57 points (3 wins), equal 2nd are Herts Phoenix and Thames Valley Harriers with 54 points (1 Win).

CROSS COUNTRY POINTS TABLES – Please note that this year the North of the Thames have not included an Under 15 Boys and Girls race. As this fixture was one of the six races that counted towards the point’s championship, Tony Smith and I agreed that the three races for the Under 15 Boys and Girls before the Southern Championships will be the first three North West London League races.

MEN AND WOMEN’S BEST PERFORMANCE AWARDS FOR 2013 Following the recent SBH Council Meeting the awards for 2013 were agreed. Congratulations to the many winners, and as always the initial short list took many weeks to finalize. Athlete of the Year went to MARILYN OKORO and SEB RODGER, the best performance track awards, plus the Boys 2012/2013 cross country trophies will be given out at the AGM on Thursday 28 November at Allianz Park. Both lists are attached.

CALLING ALL UNDER 13 AND 15 HERTFORDSHIRE ATHLETES – Hertfordshire will be entering teams in the Regional Sportshall Championships on the 2 February 2014, which are taking place at the Hertfordshire Sports Village, Hertfordshire University.  These are U13 and U15 teams (age groups like cross country – as athletes were in the summer). Please note this is an Indoor event.

The trials for the Hertfordshire Sportshall Team will take place at the Gosling Sportshall on the following dates, Sunday 8 December 1.30pm to 3.30pm, and Sunday 15 December 11.00am to 1.00pm.

Those selected will be expected to attend the team practice on Saturday 25 January 1.30pm to 3.30pm, this is also the day of the Southern Cross Country Championships.

Please can you circulate this information to all interested athletes and coaches so that Hertfordshire have the strongest teams possible in each age group. It would be nice to reach the national final in April.

Thursday 28 November – Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers Annual General Meeting – Being held in the Restaurant at Allianz Park, Greenlands Lane, Hendon NW4 1RL The meeting starts at 19.30pm followed at 20.00pm with the presentation of 2012/2013 Cross Country and 2013 Track and Field awards.

Saturday 7 December – Fraternity/Sorority Cups – Being held in Trent Park, Cockfosters Road, Middlesex EN4 0PS. The start is close to the car park which is accessible from the western gate of Trent Park, found on the left-side before reaching Cockfosters underground station (Piccadilly line). The race starts at 2.30pm for Junior, Senor and Veteran Men/Women. Numbers will be given out close to the start area. Note: You do not have to be pre-entered, just turn up and run. 

Saturday 7 December – North West London League Match 3 – Being held in Trent Park, Cockfosters Road, Middlesex EN4 0PS. Start times Southern Masters 11.00am Men 50 and over (10km), 11.43am Women 40 plus, 50 plus, 60 plus and Men 70 plus (6km), 2.10pm Men 40 plus (10km). Note: You will have to be pre-entered by your respective Team Manager. Start times Inter Counties 11.04am U13 Girls (3km), 11.20am U13 Boys (3km), 11.40am U15 Girls (4km), 12.25pm U15 Boys (4km), 12.50pm U17 Men (5km), 1.15pm U17 Women (5km) and U20 Women (6km), 1.40pm U23 and Senior Women (6km). Note: You will have to be pre-entered by your respective County Team Manager. 

Saturday 21 December – Active Training World Metropolitan League Match 3 – Alexandra Palace which is accessible by road from junction of Park Road, Priory Road and Muswell Hill (western end). Getting there: W3 bus runs through Palace grounds. W7 runs past western end. BR to Alexandra Palace on Kings Cross line, or Piccadilly Line to Wood Green, then W3. Parking: Paddock Car Park from western end – park adjoins start area. Directions by road: A406 North Circular – exit at B550 Colney Hatch Lane, then onwards to Muswell Hill. The course itself: Again pretty flat! Start and Finish on a grass field, the rest is undulating, with a very steep climb/descent in parkland. You will definitely need spikes!

Start times 1.15pm U13 Boys (3km), 1.20pm U13 Girls (3km), not before 1.35pm U17 Men and U15 Boys (4km), not before 1.40pm U17 Women and U15 Girls (4km), not before 1.55pm U20, Senior and Veteran Women (6km), not before 2.35pm U20, Senior and Veteran Men (8km). Thursday 26 December – Boxing Day Bonanza – Takes place at Allianz Park and Starts at 11.00am. £1 entry fee, there will be prizes, raffle and refreshments, and why not come in fancy dress, and in Ray Powell’s case come as normal.
