COACHING MASTER CLASS – ALAN LAUNDER AND TOM MCNAB – WEDNESDAY 13 AUGUST 2014 – 19.00 TO 21.30 – ALLIANZ PARK – INDOOR AREA

We had 19 attending the master class, 11 coaches, 2 teachers, 5 athletes and Geoff Morphitis. Clubs represented were, SBH, LH, E&H, Bromley, Harrow and Watford. Tom McNab was his normal self for those of you that know him.

Alan Launder was unique both as regards his knowledge, his presentation skills and the practical session which was enjoyed by all. His success rate in Australia, to where he emigrated after his prodigious teaching career at Dr Challenors, was legendary. Our thanks to Saracens who provided the facility free of charge

However, it is with great regret that I also have to advise you that ALAN died of a heart attack 2 weeks ago whilst driving up the A1 to visit relatives in Wisbech. A real loss.

SHAFTESBURY MEN WIN UK YOUTH DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE NATIONAL FINAL A really good day for SBH at this 8 hour National YDL Final with loads of SB’s and PB’s. The team picked up 22 Gold medals which was the best performance by any club on the day. Even though the team had a convincing win in the Men’s team competition, our loss of key athletes in the Women’s team due to injury could not be covered with specialists, even though everyone worked very hard to cover the gaps. Particular congratulations to OJIE EDOBURUN for setting a new League record in the U20 100m in 10.53 and for his clear victory in the U20 200m and to KYLE LANGFORD for not only his two “A” string wins in the 1500m and 400m but for a fantastic 46.9 relay split which brought the 4 x 400m U20 team to victory with the fastest club time in the UK in 2014. The Club will therefore be representing GB&NI in the European Champion Clubs Cup for Junior’s in 2015.

EUROPEAN JUNIOR CLUBS CUP The European Champion Clubs Cup for Juniors is an inter-club competition organised by the European Athletics Association on a country by country basis. The competition involves the champion teams, on a separate basis as between men and women, organised as 3 divisions of 8. The GB&NI representatives, are selected following the Youth Development League final, so that the 2013 men’s and women’s winners compete in the 2014 European event. At the 2014 event, SBH for the men and Windsor, Slough, Eton and Hounslow for the women, are in the top division with relegation for the bottom 2 countries and promotion for the top 2 from each division. This year, the top division meeting is being held in Castellon, near Valencia, Spain on Saturday 20 September.

The SBH team fly out on the Friday and return on the Sunday. It is a very high quality meeting with many European and World Junior representatives competing. SBH have been the only GB club to ever win either title when they won men’s title in 2012. For many of our Junior members this is the first experience of international competition. The club pay the bulk of the cost, although each athlete does make a contribution to the weekend. It’s a great team bonding exercise and has formed the basis of our senior success in recent years.
