THE AGYEPONG DYNASTY – Many of you may not be aware of the influence they had on the club, starting in the 1980s. FRANCIS who as a Triple Jumper is still No.2 on the clubs all-time list (17.18), JACQUI his younger sister still holds the club record for 60m Hurdles (8.01) and 100m Hurdles (12.90), ANDREW is the youngest of the family and was our No.1 Triple Jumper as a junior. Then there is MARY BERKELEY (who is the wife of Francis) who was an International Long Jumper won a Silver Medal in the 1986 Commonwealth games. In 2015, MICAH is the son of Andrew and has recently joined Shaftesbury, as a 13 year old, and is currently training with the sprints squad under the guidance of Coach Bob Gayler.

FRANCIS first competed as an Under 20 Triple Jumper in 1984, his first major championship as a senior was in 1987 when he finished third in the AAA Championships (16.41m). In 1992 he qualified for the Barcelona Olympics finishing twelfth in a personal best (16.55m), and finished 8th in the European Indoor Championships (16.36m). 1993 was his first World Championships and just missed out in the qualifying round (16.46m), 1994 finished 13th in the European Indoor Championships (16.27m). 1995 was a special year firstly finished 7th in the World Indoor Championships (16.74m) and 14th in the World Outdoor Championships (16.58m), and in the London Grand Prix he achieved his current personal best (17.18m) which is still No.2 on Shaftesbury’s all-time list. His form of 1985 carried forward to 1996, where at the European Indoor Championships in Stockholm he won a well-deserved Silver Medal (16.93m) only 4cm behind the winner Maris Bruziks of Latvia. Following this he gained selection to his second Olympic Games in Atlanta, USA finishing 13th (16.71m). 1997 finished 13th in the World Championships (16.83m) and 1998 8th in the European Indoor Championships (16.57m).

JACQUI was equally successful, joining us as an U20 Hurdler running mainly indoors until 1987 when she finished third in the 100m Hurdles at the AAA Championships in a personal best (13.17).

1994 was a year of solid achievements, beginning with victory in the European Cup final at Birmingham. She then lowered her personal best in the 100m hurdles to 12.93, before taking seventh place in the European Championships, a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games behind Australia’s irrepressible Commonwealth record holder, Michelle Freeman and, finally, third place in the World Cup at Crystal Palace.

At 25, the athlete who has seemed the natural successor to Sally Gunnell in the sprint hurdles seems on the brink of breaking through to the very highest level. The British 60 metres hurdles record was one of her targets for the 1995 season, but to improve it in her first competition, with a time of 8.05sec, came as a surprise to her. She also produced her current personal best in the 100m Hurdles (12.90). Her Major honours included – Indoors (60m Hurdles) at the World Championships 1993 7th in the semi-final (8.67), 1995 5th in the final (8.01), Outdoors (100m Hurdles) at the World Championships 1993 4th in the semi-final (13.03), 1995 7th in the semi-final (13.14), Olympic Games 1992 4th in the heats (13.25) and 1996 6th in the heats (13.24).

ANDREW in 1989 as an Under 20 year old jumped his personal best (15.21m), which ranked him UK No.3 U20 in 1989, and that season competed in the British Athletic League alongside Francis, whilst Jacqui competed for us in the UK Women’s Athletic League.

MARY in 1984 which was her final year as a junior finished sixth in the UK Championships (windy 6.22m), her progression as a senior was awesome, and in 1986 won a Silver Medal at the Edinburgh Commonwealth Games (6.40m). Moving on to 1989 she finished 6th in the European Indoor Championships (6.33m), and in June of 89 she jumped her personal best (6.63m), also a windy (6.65m). 1990 she finished 7th (6.33m) in the Commonwealth Games in Auckland, and 14th in the European Championships (6.27m).

ANDREW, FRANCIS and MARY were all coached by Shaftesbury’s FRANK ATTOH who joined the club in 1973, he too was a very accomplished Triple Jumper winning the Silver Medal in the 1975 AAA U20 Championships (15.25m). As a senior he won the Bronze Medal in the 1978 and 1980 AAA Championships setting his personal best (15.98m) in the 1980 AAAs, which puts him at No.6 on Shaftesbury’s all-time list. His final honour was second place in the 1980 UK Championships with a windy (16.00m). In recent times Frank has coached the following Shaftesbury jumpers Yamile Aldama, Larry Achike, Jade Attoh, Dan Bramble, Nathan Fox, Dean Oamen, Nonso Okolo, Daniel Lewis and Darnte Wilson.

This is an article that appeared in a recent edition of the London Evening Standard, featuring Francis’s latest adventure as head chef at Christopher’s in Covent Garden.
