VICTORIA PARK SPORTS MEDICINE METROPOLITAN LEAGUE – The fifth fixture of five took place at Trent Park on 10 February. In which the curtain fell down on a truly outstanding season for the club.

Many thanks to our Team Managers and helpers, plus the many Parents who have brought their sons or daughters to the 5 corners of London. Finally, our athletes who again showed what outstanding talent we have throughout the age-groups from the Under 11s to Veterans. Another factor is since the first fixture on 14 October we have had a large influx of new members, whose ability and team spirit has had a big influence on the team results.

Summary of the season’s results;
Howard Williams Trophy Juniors – This is the aggregate team totals for the Under 11, 13 and 15/17 Men and Women. Last season we surrendered the title to Wood Green and Essex Ladies, but this season we turned the tables on them. We ended up with 105 points to their 102 points, with 11 team wins to their 5 team wins.
Howard Williams Trophy Juniors – This is the aggregate team totals for the Senior Men and Women. Last season we finished in 13th place, with London Heathside winning the trophy with 44 points. This season we slipped down to 19th place, with London Heathside retaining the trophy with 46 points.
Under 11 Boys – Last season we took the title with 835 points to Victoria Park & Tower Hamlets 701 points. This Season the team retained their title with 760 points to Victoria Park & Tower Hamlets 683 points.
Under 11 Girls – Last season we finished in 2nd place, 29 points behind Woodford Green & Essex Ladies This Season the team after strong start in the first 2 fixtures, finishing in 2nd place, 117 points behind Woodford Green & Essex Ladies.
Under 13 Boys – Last season we took the title with 704 points to Woodford Green & Essex Ladies 690 points. This Season the team started the season slowly and never recovered, finishing in 4th place with 628 points to Ealing, Southall & Middlesex 811 points.
Under 13 Girls – Last season we finished in 6th place with 375 points, to Trent Park’s 548 points. This Season the team have been more consistent, finishing in 3rd place with 431 points, behind St Mary’s Richmond 609 points.
Under 15 Boys & Under 17 Men – Last season we took the title with 1173 points to Woodford Green & Essex Ladies 1149 points. This Season the team bolstered with a few Under 13s from last season, and were very consistent throughout the season. They won the title with 1640 points to Woodford Green & Essex Ladies 1540 points.
Under 15 Girls & Under 17 Women – Last season the team after a poor start, never recovered and finished 9th with 358 points to Woodford Green & Essex Ladies 821 points. This Season the team had good turnouts in 3 of the fixtures, enabling them to finished in 5th place with 410 points to London Heathside’s 719 points.
Under 20, Senior & Veteran Men – Last season we gained promotion from Division 2 by finishing 2nd with 4941 points to Trent Park’s 5420 points, winning 2 of the 5 fixtures. This Season the numbers have been disappointing, albeit the scoring 12 have included some 60% of our Veteran runners. We finished the season in 12th place, and relegation to Division 2.
Last season our Veteran Men finished 5th in Division 2. This season they have been a revelation, finishing 2nd in the first 3 fixtures and winning in the 4th at Welwyn Garden City. The team finished 2nd, gaining promotion to Division 1.
Under 20, Senior & Veteran Women – Last season the team avoided relegation by finishing in 10th place. This Season we again have struggled from the 1st fixture, finishing in 12th place, and relegation to Division 3.

NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS VENUE – The venue for this season’s English National Cross Country Championships returns to the Midland’s and another new one has been chosen with the event taking place this time at Weston Park, near Telford along the A5 to Cannock. With the entrance via Shrewsbury Gate on that road and is scheduled for Saturday 24th February.

The address of the venue is Weston under Lizard, which is a small village nearby. In appearance it is very much an estate village because of Weston Park the family seat of the Earls of Bradford. The lizard bit coming from the proximity of Lizard Hill. The element ‘Weston’ deriving from the Old English, west-tun meaning ‘west farmstead.’

Situated minutes from major motorways and with easy access to mainline train stations, Weston’s location and road network can deal with all sorts of capacity. There is over a 1000 acres of Capability Brown parkland at Weston and this will be a good test for those taking part in the 2024 event with undulating parkland and quality grass.

This will be 136th time a Senior Men’s Championship will be staged since the first in 1876 while the latest ones are the Under 13 and Under 15 Boys first stage in 2003. Once again, the traditional distances will be raced with Senior Men running 12K and the Senior Women 8K. and the finish is adjacent to the wonderfully named Temple of Diana.

NORTH WEST LONDON LEAGUE – The fifth fixture of five takes place on Saturday 2 March at Brent Country Park, Hanwell, West London (SatNav W7 3BP).
The course will be on paths within Brent Valley Park, close to Hanwell Zoo.
The first races will be at 12 noon and at the conclusion of the final event the season awards will be presented.

PARKRUN DITCHES COURSE AND AGE-CATEGORY RECORDS – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Recreational running organisation undergoes data cull amid accusations of sex discrimination, Parkrun has removed course and age-category records from its website and in future will only publish basic results from events. Also disappearing are parkrun ‘world records‘ in addition to statistics for most wins or for getting under a particular time as the organisation seeks to make its data less performance-oriented. However, the move comes at a time when parkrun is being criticised for allowing entrants to self-identify their gender, with event organisers being accused of “sex discrimination”.

A report in the Telegraph claims parkrun has taken this “drastic action after rejecting calls for it to stop allowing entrants to self-identify their gender”. However, parkrun has always prided itself on its non-competitive element and describes its events as recreational running or walking with courses roughly 5km in distance and often not accurately measured. A document which has appeared on social media from parkrun says: “We know that our websites are an important source of information for all parkrunners, especially for those who are new and yet to take part. Our insight tells us that some of the content we share and how we present it can be off-putting or create opportunities for misunderstanding (e.g. parkrun is not a race but we list most things like most first finishes).“So in the coming days we will no longer publish data such as attendance records, course records, fastest finishers, most first finishes, and age graded or category records. The results pages for every event, your personalised results email and your individual profile pages will remain unchanged.”

Several female parkrun course records have been broken by transgender women, though, leading to the accusations that female runners are being discriminated against. Parkrun has refused to ask transgender runners to record their sex at birth, arguing that their events are primarily about inclusion rather than competitive performance. A parkrun statement published in the Telegraph said the changes had followed a review over several months by a global working group to consider “how we can present data in a way that is not off-putting and doesn’t imply that parkrun is a race”. This review showed a “disconnect” between parkrun performance data and their mission of providing as many people as possible with the opportunity to participate.

Parkrun added: “We’ll continue to take steps to ensure that everyone is able to enjoy parkrun for what it is: a free community event and an opportunity to be active, social and outside in a non-competitive, inclusive and welcoming environment.”In addition, parkrun claim they were considering changes since before the Covid pandemic in 2020, regardless of the campaign around gender self-identification. However, the campaign group Fair Play For Women said: “Parkrun have been letting men hold female course records. Women complained saying it was unfair. Rather than resolve the issue Parkrun has removed everyone’s records from its website.”

KELVIN KIPTUM, MARATHON WORLD RECORD-HOLDER, DIES AGED 24 – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

Athletics world stunned by the news on Sunday that the Kenyan athlete and coach GERVAIS HAKIZIMANA died in a road accident. SEB COE, president of World Athletics, led the tributes to marathon world record-holder KELVIN KIPTUM and his coach GERVAIS HAKIZIMANA after the Kenyan media reported they had died in a car crash. “We are shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the devastating loss of KELVIN KIPTUM and his coach, GERVAIS HAKIZIMANA,” said COE. “On behalf of all World Athletics we send our deepest condolences to their families, friends, team-mates and the Kenyan nation.

“It was only earlier this week in Chicago, the place where KELVIN set his extraordinary marathon world record, that I was able to officially ratify his historic time. An incredible athlete leaving an incredible legacy, we will miss him dearly.” KIPTUM, who was 24, along with Rwanda‘s HAKIZIMANA, 37, were in a car accident in the Kaptagat area at 11pm local time on Sunday (Feb 11). According to the Standard newspaper, KIPTUM, who was a father of two children, was driving a Toyota Premio when he lost control of the vehicle. KIPTUM and HAKIZIMANA died at the scene while a third passenger, SHARON CHEPKEMOI, 32, survived and was taken to the hospital.

He set a world record of 2:00:35 in Chicago last October. It was just his third marathon, after running a world record for a debut of (2:01:53) in Valencia in December 2022 and a London Marathon course record of (2:01:25) in April 2023. On April 14 in Rotterdam, he was aiming to become the first man to break the two-hour barrier in an official race. Indeed, little over a week ago he was revealed by smart watch brand Amazfit as their new ambassador, although he did not make the event where the announcement was made in Paris due to travel problems. The athletics world was also looking forward to him taking on former world record-holder ELIUD KIPCHOGE, among others, at the Paris Olympics this year. KIPTUM’S death comes 13 years after another great Kenyan marathon runner, SAMMY WANJIRU, also died aged 24 following a fall from roof. WANJIRU won the 2008 Olympic title plus marathon titles in Chicago and London.

The World Marathon Majors said on Sunday: “The entire Abbott World Marathon Majors family is devastated by the news that our men’s series champion and world record-holder KELVIN KIPTUM and his coach GERVAIS HAKIZIMANA have passed away. All of our thoughts are with their family and friends at this time.” The London Marathon posted on social media: “We are shocked and deeply saddened to hear the terrible news of the death of marathon world record-holder KELVIN KIPTUM and his coach, GERVAIS HAKIZIMANA. The thoughts of everyone at the TCS London Marathon are with KELVIN’S and GERVAIS’ family and friends.” Kenya’s minister for sports ABABU NAMWAMBA said on social media: “Devastatingly sickening!! Kenya has lost a special gem. Lost for words.”

BBC TO COVER UK ATHLETICS MAJOR EVENTS IN 2024 – The following article was published on the Athletics Weekly website recently.

New deal will see the broadcaster showing live coverage from this weekend’s UK Indoor Champs in Birmingham. This weekend’s Microplus UK Indoor Championships will be shown live on the BBC after the broadcaster struck a deal to show UK Athletics major events in 2024. BBC will also show the UK Championships and Olympic trials on June 29-30 plus the London Diamond League at the Olympic Stadium on July 20 on BBC One, BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app.

UKA CEO JACK BUCKNER said: “We are thrilled to confirm BBC Sport as our broadcast partner for our 2024 major events series. It’s a huge year ahead for our sport and we are looking forward to working with the team at BBC Sport to bring our big events into people’s homes. The BBC Sport digital and TV audiences give us a great platform and allow the British public to really follow the action in the build up to the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

STONEX STADIUM MEMBERSHIP – To use the StoneX Stadium facilities for training, SBH members are required to pay a fee. You can register as a member (which is free) which then entitles you to a discount. This is the link to the form to apply for membership – StoneX Membership (1) as of 30 October 2023

JAMIE BATH MEMBERS MASSAGE SERVICE – Since joining SBH he has been working closely with TY HOLDEN in his quest for Athlete and Athletics Development. To help support the club members he has (with the club’s support) set up a Members Massage Service available on club nights at a small charge of £15 (as compared to outside masseurs who charge £60) to simply cover materials and insurance.

CODES OF CONDUCT – SBH have now adopted the UK Athletics (UKA) and the Home Country Athletics Federations (HCAF) Codes of Conduct which set out national standards of conduct for all clubs, coaches, officials, volunteers and athletes in the sport.  The purpose of the codes are to clarify what behaviours are acceptable and unacceptable, the standards of practice expected and the basis for challenging and improving practice.  The Codes are similar to our previous Codes of Conduct which were part of the previous ClubMark scheme.  All club member and anyone undertaking a relevant role must agree to abide by the codes of conduct. The Codes of Conduct have now been put onto our Website, please read these to understand the commitments you are making by being a member of SBH.

ACCESS TO SBH CLUBHOUSE – The new Keyholders to the outside door are TY HOLDEN, CLYDE GORDON, NEVILLE THOMPSON, GREG THOMPSON, COLIN GODFREY and YAMILLE ALDAMA who all use the Clubhouse outside of normal stadium opening hours. GEOFF MORPHITIS and DAVE BEDFORD will also have a key. All other key fob holders can continue to gain access to the clubhouse via the (New) West Stand Entrance and the Trackside Door to the Clubhouse.

PHOTOGRAPH’S – From time to time we have photographs of our members taken at meetings or presentations which we would like to use both on the website or incorporated within our report to our local newspaper. Can you please let me know if you do NOT want your photograph to be published. Also, I would appreciate if you could send me any photographs, which I can then publish on the website and newsletter.

CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF SHAFTESBURY INFORMATION – Currently I notify members (by email) using “MailChimp”. The reason I changed, was in November 2017 “Gmail” put a limit of 100 addresses that users could send to in a 24-hour period, and currently I send to approximately 850 members each issue.

On seeking technical advice “MailChimp” was recommended as the best way for SBH to go forward. There is one thing you should be aware off is that when you receive an email from me, the footer at the bottom has 4 options, of which one is “Unsubscribe Me From List”. Could I ask you not to select this as if you do you will be automatically removed from my distribution list.

SBH MIDWEEK JUMPS CLUB AT STONEX STADIUM – The current arrangements until further notice are that Pole Vault training is on Monday’s and Wednesday’s from 18.30pm to 21.00pm. High Jump training is on Wednesday’s from 18.45pm to 21.00pm.

SBH FAST FORWARD SCHOOL ATHLETICS CLUB – ‘Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers now run the school athletics club on Tuesday and Thursday at 4.30pm and which progresses to a more advanced club at 5.45 as a segue into the club. This is for ages 5 years -10 years of age.
