ACTIVE TRAINING WORLD METROPOLITAN LEAGUE – The first of five fixtures took place on Saturday 11 October at Claybury, Essex. It was a very pleasant day around 16 degrees following some early showers. This was a day to remember as JOHN KELLY celebrated his run by becoming the third member of the “100 Club”. His first race was on 16 December 1978 at Woodford, on the day JOHN was first Shaftesbury man home in 48th place (27.00), other notable finishers Gerry Elmore 70th (27.47), Crosby Walker 126th (29.35), Ken Tollady 137th (30.06) and Russell Devitt 169th (31.39). PHILIP CUNNINGHAM has now completed 96 races, and is still on target to reach the 100 races mark on 7 February 2015. Photographs attached of Ray and John not long after finishing the race, also the Senior Men’s Squad with head supporter Norman Fox holding the banner and John’s son Ben who ran in the Under 13 race.

This was the first time that an Under 11 race for Boys and Girls was held, which proved to be very successful with 44 runners taking part, of which 10 of those came from, Shaftesbury. There were Top 5 place runs from the following Young Athletes – FINN HARVEY won the Under 13 Boys, LIA RADUS and SCARLETT KENT were 2nd`and 4th respectively in the Under 13 Girls and JOSH EDWARDS was 3rd in the Under 15 Boys.

In the Senior Woman’s race RACHEL FELTON had an impressive win, in the previous 2 seasons she has competed in 8 races, winning 6 and 2nd in the other 2. Our Team’s performed well on the day with the Under 13 Girls winning by a big margin, the Under 13 Boys finished in 5th place and only having 3 runners (4 to score) that made the difference of finishing amongst the leading teams. The Under 15/17 Women finished in 6th place but not too far behind the 3rd place team, the Under 15/17 Men finished in 10th place.

The Senior Women finished in a splendid 4th place, and with only having 5 scoring runners (6 to score) they were only 25 points behind Serpentine, Simon tells me two of the girls were taken ill and could not run. The Senior Men also finished in 4th place which is a good start to the season, in the next race in Stevenage we need another 4-5 guys who are capable of finishing in the first 50 to make an impact.
